Just found your channel great content and your comments are straight forward and on point. I am purchasing a new Tohatsu 50 hp tiller for my 17 fiberglass skiff. It’s just a simple skiff for coastal fishing island hopping crabbing camping and setting nets. But will serve my purpose well. Thank you for your insight. I plan to do a progress video as I put my project together.
Thanks for making this video. I have a 1448 grizzly with pods, i have the same issue with the tohatsu 25hp just not being enough but concerned about going to the 40.
You know you and I have the same boat. What I noticed with my 25hp was that if I kept my counter weight in the center of the boat close to my feet it worked better than putting the weight in the front of the boat. Keep it as close to you as you can and push the weight forward slowly until it stops hopping. I got 27 with mine on a good day. I really like how that Tohatsu is pushing that boat bro.
I’ll try some weight further back as you suggested. Also thanks! I do 20+ mile trips a good amount and this makes me feel a bit better about out running storms and what not
awsome video !!!! im looking at the 50hp tohatsu 4 stroke for my 14ft bayliner.... this really helped me out big time.... im going back n forth on this motor and the suzuki 50hp 4 stroke..
Glad I could help, a 50 Suzuki is certainly an excellent motor. I would take into consideration if you personally intend to do the maintenance or if you’ll be taking it to a dealer. Lind story short if doing it yourself it’ll be easier to find and obtain service parts for Suzuki vs. tohatsu. That said, I do have a list of the tohatsu service parts as well as how to perform it in a other video. Best of luck on your decision!
@@BuckcreekTV thanks for the quick reply!!!! the only reason im more on the suzuki side is im moving home to miami beach fl. and a dealer is down the street from the house 🤣im looking for a lighter motor and from looking suzuki is one of the lighter motors.... thanks for that input!!! i will take into consideration ✌✌✌

I have the same boat,put a 50 merc 4 stroke with a cmc kick plate,very happy with it,I consistently run 36-38 and I’m 350lbs!!!Nice set up,now I need a plotter/fish finder
Overall I am very happy other than finding maintenance parts which was a nightmare as mentioned. There are some things I prefer on the 25 Mercury I had, and some things I prefer on this tohatsu. All in all I’m still relatively happy with the Tohatsu.
Great vid. I just picked up a '23 Merc 40 on an older mint 16ft Sea Nymph thats just under 500lbs dry weight, was wondering if it was going to be too heavy/too much for this boat. Looks like your 1548 sits just fine, and I assumed with a 16p SS prop I can get mine to 40mph too. Right now its got a 4 blade and guy said it only does 28mph....lol Im guessing its a 12 or 13 but will be great to have as spare or 3 people fishing.
Absolutely certainly doesn't help to have an extra prop. It should be fine on that. 16-footer I'm not too familiar with seeing nips. I believe they are fiberglass correct? The weight on the Mercury's are certainly a lot heavier than the hotsus but for that size boat it should be okay
Do you have a video of how you mounted transducer for fish finder and GPS? I have a 16ft triton with float pods on each side like yours and just unfamiliar with where to mount a transducer when i do purchase it. Thanks for the help!
Nice job on your videos. I have your boat and wanted to do the same upgrade. What I found is while yes a 23 inch transom usually requires a 25 inch outboard these sportsman hulls have an angled transom. The proper fit is a 20 inch. Your challenge is weight distribution with that 4 stroke and the short boat. I bet if you had a 40 Etec 2 stroke you would have far less of an issue. The 2 stroke is lighter. Anyway enjoy your post.
Glad you enjoyed it and well worth the upgrade. It really didn’t add much weight to the back of the boat I think it’s only 10-15 pounds difference really between the ultra long shaft and 40 tohatsu still well worth the upgrade
@@BuckcreekTV what’s the difference between the Merc 25 and the 40 Tohatsu. I bet when you run it with trolling motor on that will help. The farther forward/center should help a bunch. Be interesting to see if you can hit 40 mph.
I tried running with that ice chest as far forward as I could get it and it was close to being over 100 pounds and I still have porpoising problems but with the 25 merc on a good day with little to no gear I can get up to 26-27 miles an hour. Even with the porpoising problems and the additional weight of the ice chest I hit 36mph without being able to trim out with a small load I’ve topped 38mph thus far

@BuckcreekTV yeah I have a 1654 thinking about a 60 tohatsu but I would definitely have to work the transom there is no brace and the transom is just Hollow between the front and back. Might want to look into it don't want to welds to crack over time.

I’m looking at this boat for fishing and duck hunting, is it a good boat? I’ve heard people say put more money in and get a havoc or something else but none of them own this boat and would like a honest opinion.
I think it is, havocs and excels will get you there faster but overall I’m content with mine. I took it to the swamp today, bumped into trees shot a pig and got out safely with few concerns
I think that’s from the hydrofoil. I’m going to try and take the hydrofoil off and see what difference that makes but you definitely have to have the engine trim down where you get porpoising regardless you can’t trim it out hardly at all
Honestly, that 25 is pushing you around pretty well. 40 on that thing. You are going to be cruising. It's not something I would personally do, but also not my boat. I'd imagine you'd be getting close to 40 out of it
