  • In this video we race a Mercury 35/25 Four Stroke Outboard Jet against a Tohatsu 30/22 outboard jet. The results may surprise you! We used two Solar 420's for the test.

The best jet motor for a 420 size inflatable is really the lightest motor that runs a medium size pump. Great video Rob, and the tech chart mid video shows both motors are running small pumps.

I’ve never been able to find one of those two stroke Tohatsu engines.

    Great video.
Can you provide a better idea of just how much more fuel the two stroke burns over the four ?

Same reason extreme enduro dirt bikes are 99% 2 stroke: Holeshot and weight.

Where can you still buy tohatsu two strokes? Cool test BTW

Mercury says that fourstroke is 25hp at the pump but there wasn’t a 35hp model in that engine series. So they either fudged the actual power out put or did something to the tuning of the engine to get 5hp more out of it. My guess is it’s actually just a 30hp power head and closer to 21hp. They have done the same thing with the new 25hp four stroke as well it’s a 30hp Tohatsu power head. Cant beat two stroke performance! Awesome test Rob! 🤟🏻

Tohatsu is who builds the 30hp and lower 4 strokes for mercury since 2004
The 25/30hp mercury/tohatsu motors are same blocks but different cam/ECU/throttle body that make the 30hp. Also the 25hp maxes out at 6000 rpm where the 30hp will go up 6250rpm.
The jet 25hp mercury is a 30hp top end but pumping loss gives 25hp.
Tohatsu will be faster but when I ran 25hp motors back to back the 4 stroke used 25 percent less fuel for same run.

Hp loss from power head to pump output is roughly 30% which brings a 30hp power head to 21hp all outboard jets are now rated at the pump output So for Mercury to say it’s 25hp at the pump they have either upped the 30hp power head to 35hp somehow for that to be true or they are just saying it’s 25 out the pump when it’s actually close to 20-21hp is my point

@@bcbrando7678 I would lean on the 21hp rating at pump.
The 4hp you are paying for but not getting prob won't be noticable at that level. If you do want to see a bump in speed. Run it again without cover so engine breathes fresh clean air. I've done this a few times in various motors and noticed an extra 50-100rpm increase

Every time you put a REAL outboard against a fourstroke, the real outboard wins :)
