How cold is it? I recently talked to a ford salesman about a Lightning. He tested it in some of our cold Canadian winter weather. He wanted to test the range in our -40C winter weather. Truck was parked and charged in the dealership garage over night. That morning he made it 20 miles and turned around. Almost didn’t make it back to the dealership on the charge. That that was pretty interesting. I know they have a place, but I find it amazing how true winter weather destroys the range.
Chemistry in the battery electrolytes degrade VERY rapidly at -40C. @proletariat9467 Just like diesel and gasoline. G2 or Type 2 Diesel starts to crystalize it's wax at low temp, where Type 1 won't, but neither are freeze proof and -40C is very rapidly approaching not just fuel freezing, but other fluids and parts as well. Material strength of various other parts of your truck will brittle. May not be a city slicker, and you may can go a LOT farther then an EV, but there are limits to lots of things and -40 Celsius is a point most anything won't tolerate.

While I normally don't dare question truckers given that, as a hatchback person, we clearly live in different universes. I do think "real world" needs to be put into perspective. A 2021 Axios study on F150 drivers found that 7% of people use their truck to tow regularly, 29% sometimes, and 63% never tow anything. Other most frequent use cases: 87% use it to shop for errands, 50% for commuting and 70% for pleasure driving. Granted, I live in a city, but pickups are extraordinarily common here. The issue with the trucks here(and across the US according to the above stat) is that they are a fashion statement rather than a utility. Their main purpose is just as a flex on other pickup drivers. In those cases, an EV truck checks their boxes while fixing the issue of commuting with 14mpg while not actually taking advantage of the reason the engine takes 14mpg. For those who use Pickups as a utility, y'all clearly are gonna stick to your truck for at least 12+ years (as you clearly actually use them) and by 2036, I am sure ev tech will evolve enough to become worthy of being a utility to those who do actually drive 500 miles a day towing 14,000 pounds.

Lot of things to make sound, but they could have insulated better for sure. The VFD’s and inherent inverters will create the most sound to create the three phase back EMF for the induction motors. When you have multiple motors, like the dual motors in the rear, you are also using them to replicate the function of a differential so your back EMF’s will have a clashing acoustic signature due to difference in frequency of supplies. In the tri-motor it’s probably even more pronounced because I think the front motor is a PMAC rather than an induction motor, so its back EMF is a different shape entirely. Then on top of that you’ve got various pumps, road noise, wind resistance, high and low order harmonics, etc etc. Could get a fancy microphone and a spectrum analyzer to find the noise culprits.
The TLDR I’m making here is that it likely is the motors making the most significant noise, but that the perceived amplitude of that noise is not going to have a super strict linear relationship to the applied acceleration

To the 2 trying to use fossil fuel burning for electricity as some 'gotcha' comment, it isn't the same. To produce the same energy and use it, a gas automobile has a peak efficiency between 25 and 35%. A gas turbine electric plant is up to 60%. An electric vehicle is about 80% efficient. Truck was parked and charged in the dealership garage over night. That morning he made it 20 miles and turned around. Almost didn’t make it back to the dealership on the charge. That that was pretty interesting. I know they have a place, but I find it amazing how true winter weather destroys the range.

@JG-MV How do you think electricity is produced in most of the states? By burning fossil fuels.
Yeah, you forgot you tank electricity from a coal, gas or burning trees powered powerplant@JG-MV
@@intoodeep001 You do realize power plants burn that same fossil fuel far more efficiently than any ICE car even considering the inefficiency of transferring through the grid and into an EV?
@@OrbitalWedge
They don't realize this, nor will they believe you.
So a gas turbine plant charging an EV is still more efficient and thus less polluting than your average econobox car. And that's me ignoring the ever growing footprint of green energy sources hooking into our grids.
Good honest review, although the "freezing weather" part is somewhat exaggerated. (32 F at beginning to 34 F at end). How about a test when it's -10 or -20 F, normal winter temperatures in Montana, North Dakota and up on the Canadian prairies?
@proletariat9467 There were reports out of Alberta when it was -40 that the EVs were shutting down while driving, claiming it was too cold.
The range anxiety was oozing out from you 😂
Why, he passed like 6 Superchargers during the test. He ran it as low as he wanted and in true TFL fashion created the worst possible scenario. Which is fine but suckers take exceptions as the rule which I thought was a Liberal way of looking at things. Guess both sides are suckers depending on the narrative.
@@wdbldr67can you explain to me how range testing an EV is a liberal thing ?
I appreciate you adding the metric conversion on screen. Saves me a Google search
but 60mph is not 69kph, its more like 97

Yes you like your Rivian. . . but what are you going to do when they close their doors ? We have a 2020 Tesla Model 3, dual motor, high performance that is driven for work about 72 miles per day. We are in cold country, western South Dakota/ According to the vehicle's computer at 46,000 miles the overall average power consumption was 0.249 kilowatts per mile (0259 watts) This includes heating during winter operation. We pay an average of 12.54 cents per kilowatt, so the cost has been 3,12 cents per mile. Most of the driving is highways.
You should also see what the tri-motor can do in this situation if you get the chance
Range would be worse
I would like to see it too, as it could have more range due to the additional motor making it work less overall. Great video btw!
@@joeypittsteelers963 that is not how physics work. More motors = more weight, and more losses. Unless it gets a bigger battery pack you will gain nothing and rather lose a bit of range
Currently very hard to get the Tri-motor since it seems the only customer vehicles that are in that spec are the delivery event vehicles.
Everything they are shipping right now are the Dual-motor foundation series.
Might be too loud to record
You can open the Energy Graph on the bottom of the screen in the app selection
Exactly. He keeps complaining about the rated range at the top left but that doesn’t ever adjust to driving conditions. The estimated range in the energy app does. Same in all Teslas. Disappointing that he didn’t know that.
"That's not going anywhere" never gets old haha
One of the best videos I’ve watched in a long time
You are having far too much fun driving that truck. 😁
The whole time you are building suspense about it running out of power I was thinking "you can tow it with the other truck on the back!"
That’s a good idea always bring extra trucks with you just in case.
Driving a truck shouldn't be fun??? I have serious fun driving my Gladiator and RAM Warlock. Driving SHOULD be fun no matter what you are driving.
@@DanBlackRacing ikr especially in school zones
What truck did he drive? I saw him driving some ugly, cheap looking electric vehicle that someone designed in high school drafting class!
