The gold platting paste is purple/redish because that's the color of gold nanoparticles. The red stained glass in some old churches comes from very fine grounded gold powder infused in the glass. They used to ground that up by hand to nanoparticles, which is pretty cool and insane when you think about it.
It's even cooler now knowing this. Thanks!
@@DouglasJMark You're welcome.
Side note:
The reason for the purple color of the paste in the video is because the nanoparticles are over 100 nanometers in diameter, the church stained glass I've seen had a very deep red color because the particles were below 30 nm in size. Crazy what they could achieve hundreds of years ago. I always wonder how they've come to this discovery, because you need to grind that gold for weeks to achieve this size.
@@Atom224 Wow. It's fascinating. I'll admire my church's stained glass windows even more tomorrow. BTW, do you have a favourite website or UA-cam or other resource? I'd love to learn more please/thanks!
I thought this is just a chemical reaction, but nanoparticles interactions are much much larger than chemical reactions, which happens at atomic scale. Using nanoparticles can make electro plating a lot more uniform than just chemical electroplating.
These are not gold nanoparticles, this is galvanically coated and is a salt in the solution which has this color

Fun fact: the gold DeLorean was sold for 85k ($323,441.50 in todays dollars) but only two were officially created with a partnership with American Express to promote their gold card. They are both currently in a museum. It sounds like three others were plated after manufacturing as well for a total of 5. 💛😊💛

@@dannydaw59 Christmas 1980
I bet those are plated more evenly than this CT. Amazing how inconsistent the finish is on the CT panels. DeLorean did it better in the 80's.
@@dannydaw59 The cost isn't the gold, it is the process. It would be interesting to get the numbers on the surface area of the truck and the thickness of the application to calculate the actual value of gold added here.

FR. And as far as compact wallets go it's not even that great. I have a secrid wallet that was given to me for Christmas, and while it's still insanely expensive and I wouldn't recommend sending so much money on a wallet, it at least gives me much easier access to my cards and in my opinion is way more convenient. My brother actually stopped using his ridge wallet because it was so difficult and damaged some of his cards when pulling them out.
Yeah. I also much prefer my customade wallet out of 100% buffalo leather with an unique laser imprint design and my name Tag.

I feel as though the reason the foundation logo sticks out is because the gold layer is so thin that it just makes a transparent gold layer, which is why it allows the foundation logo to shine through and unique parts of the stainless steel stick out through the coating

Just when you thought enough content had been milked from the Cybertruck
I was thinking the same thing
The one useful thing I got from this video is Cybertruck is made of magnetic "stainless steel". That's one of the ways to test stainless steel actually. If it's attracted to magnet well then there's not much nickel and chromium in steel, it won't be very resistive to corrosion.
I got a ridge keyholder for £3 at a charity shop, brand new. That's about all I'd pay for a ridge product lol.
I have a 24k gold plating brush setup, I normally plate silver rings and jewelry with it. The key to it working well is having it clean and polished. If it's dirty at all it doesn't work and if it's not polished it keeps the same texture exactly like what is happening here. It's cool to see this done on a large scale like this.
“Paint damage” takes on a whole new meaning 😂
It'll be stolen before first accident.
even though I think the cybertruck is a hideous hunk of crap and gold is my least favorite color in the world, I found this video very enjoyable to watch.

I'm a bit surprised they don't have the entire truck inside of a bin or on top of a thick plastic sheet or something to recover all the liquids possible because any of that solution that doesn't plate under the truck but flows off of the truck is still very high concentration gold that can be recovered.
Looks like they are catching the runoff in bins, but I wouldn't be surprised if they have some mechanism to collect anything that misses those. Reminds me of the gold smithing places that dust the shop every so often and get an extra couple grand back lol.

i have a few additions and corrections to the video.
The "Electro Cleaner", an electrolytic degreasing process, creates hydrogen gas on the steel which virtually blasts off dirt particles.
You have explained the Gold Strike well
with the gold paste or the electrolyte you don't have pure gold in it, you have a salt probably potassium dicyanoaurate(I) (K[Au(CN)2]) in it, which gives the ions for the deposition.
Yes, it is electroplating, but in this case it is pin electroplating or tampon electroplating.
The gold layer has the same surface structure because the layer is so extremely thin, the layer is maximum 5µm thick (0.0002 inches)
The metal does not have to be wet, it would also work dry if you use a liquid electrolyte and not a paste.
The minerals in the water can be deposited during the process, which could result in a blotchy layer.
Layers are measured in the industry (also in the USA) in micrometres, for example a human hair is about 80 micrometres thick, the gold layer is about 0.5 micrometres thick.
To the question of how it works
Due to the salt, dicyanoaurate ions are present in the solution, which turn into gold and cyanide at the cathode. the gold then remains on the surface and the cyanide remains in the solution.
A little reminder on the subject of ions
an ion is an atom or molecule that is missing or has too many electrons, which gives it a charge. it gets the missing electrons back at the cathode
I hope as a professional galvaniser I was able to help you a little.
