Like anybody alive and listening to rock 'n roll in 1983 I heard "In a Big Country" on the radio and at parties a lot. Somehow, and to my regret, I am just now discovering how good a band this was. If only someone had sat me down in '83 and made me listen to the entirety of The Crossing. Alas, no such luck then and I've spent 40 years missing out on enjoying the band. Why they weren't bigger and on everyone's lips then, I cannot fathom. They measure up to the best of that era without breaking a sweat. But luck has arrived and I am finally out of the woods when it comes to Big Country. I managed it only this week by taking a chance on the BBC's collection of their live in-studio and on-stage recordings of the band. Phenomenal collection. Find it. It is, also, just in the last few days that I learned Stuart had died in 2001. So, as I celebrate the find, I grieve the loss. Lord, life is a trip. So, what to do, but to be inspired by the tunes to what greatness I may still have in me and stay alive while I am alive. RIP, Stuart. You will not be forgotten.
Saw this on German tv ,35 years ago , They were so impressive ,never seen or heard anything like them . Went to the recordstore and bought The Crossing. Still one of my all-time favorite band ! Stay Alive
I remember an interview in a German musicans magazine back then that had photos from this gig in it; Cool to be able to watch it now, 38 years later! 😀
You prolly dont give a shit but if you guys are bored like me during the covid times then you can watch all the new series on InstaFlixxer. Have been watching with my brother these days :)
My brother bought me the cassette of The Crossing for my Christmas present when it came out. He told me it was for my niece who was 3 years younger than me and asked me to wrap it for her as her Christmas present. I was SO psyched to find out that it was actually mine!
The music of Stuart Adamson and his band "Big Country" has shaped me and my musical preferences forever. I hope that his "Partners in Crime", Bruce Watson, Tony Butler, Mark Brzezicki and all the "new" band members and their music will be remembered for a long time! May you rest in peace Stuart!
Until just over a year ago I had no time or use for UA-cam. Then I discovered footage of Big Country and now I spend countless hours watching the band and catching up on what I’ve been missing. Massive thanks to all those who continue to post Big Country footage.
I remember having their album "Living in a Big Country" on a cassette and listening to it over and over one w/e while tripping on shrooms with some friends..lol..We did a whole Oz of some righteous fungus..lol
Absolutely brilliant performance. A true testament of how great they already were from their first album and tour in 83. Followed up by a UK #1 album Steeltown, then The Seer with a huge hit Look Away, it is still a mistery to me why they never became a big arena / stadium act like U2 or Simple Minds in those days. They had it all. And they had Stuart. Miss the man... like a garden in the forest that the world will never see.
First time I saw BC was on this tour the month before in Glasgow, I even got to shake Stuart's hand as they went offstage, he looked me in the eye, smiled, and gave me a little nod, it meant the world to the 17 year old me.
I know this has been available to watch for at least the past 5 years, but I'm so, so grateful that it is available, because oh my GOD is it GLORIOUS, especially in such beautiful quality! I just discovered Big Country in 2023 ("discovered" as in: beyond only "In a Big Country"), and since first watching this only a few months ago, I now put it on when I'm bored or need something on in the background only to inevitably be pulled in by this sensational performance...which is to say that I've happily watched this in its entirety several times now, and I will continue to watch it more as long as it remains available on UA-cam! 🤞🏻I don't even like the songs "Angle Park" or "Balcony," but damn if I don't like this version of "Angle Park" at least because it's performed so earnestly! I think this band is so excellent at converting non-believers - as in, if you think you don't like their music, listen again...and then you won't stop wanting to listen to them! 🤣That's been my experience, at least! The performance in this of "In a Big Country" is my favorite ever (I LOVE getting to hear Tony's harmonies so clearly!!) and "Porrohman" is stunning.💖Anyway, sorry for writing a novel, but thank you so much for sharing this. I and my mental health are so grateful to you, @BC1000Stars. This is probably one of my all-time favorite live shows (to watch in retrospect; especially for me, as I'm in my 20s) by any band to watch, and I am more than happy to rewatch. :')
Hi Lily, thank you so much for such a beautifully written comment. I'm thrilled you're a newly converted fan and are already appreciating some of the subtleties and nuances of their live performances. Your visible and unbridled enthusiasm has made my day. Stay Alive! 😃
This brings me back to 1983 when I first discovered Big Country which instantly became my favorite band! Totally original, unique sound, that has not ever been replicated and when I think of Scotland, I think of Big Country.
Fantastic, i saw this on TV in October 1983 when i was in the Army in Nürnberg near München. 2/270 Transport Batalion. At that Point i was a huge Big Country Fan to this Day. Saw the Band many Times live...first in 1986 Rockpalast. Still have the Ticket. Thanks for that.
Thanx for the upload it brings back memories from 1983 of Top Of The Pops, Live at Sefton Park then i caught them at the Reading Festival - won the crowd over easily.... Great live act and the Crossing is an 80's classic
Astounding quality! I have been watching the old footage in the past few weeks over and over again, as I so love this performance; especially the transition of Balcony into Lost Patrol. I wished for it - if only - to be in colour. And now this.... Give Olaf a big kiss from me for making this happen! And to you for sharing this with us!
Bel concerto, io c'ero mi ricordo che dovevano esserci i Depeche Mode che all'ultimo momento annullarono il concerto e loro gli sostituirono e così ho conosciuto i Big Country
Thank you so much for curating and sharing this footage, and for all your content. For those of us that never had the chance to see them live this is such a privilege, especially hearing The Storm, gives me shivers like lightning is about to strike. Just getting to hear the bits and pieces of commentary as well, I love hearing Stuart's speaking voice, when his accent really comes through. The wee fragments that start to bring all the stories together. It's very grounding to hear Scottish people on UA-cam, somehow, while we're all in isolation and not getting to talk to each other as much. If anyone reading this feels isolated, no matter what year you read this in, you're not alone. Stay Alive.
Fantastic band, The Crossing is essential listening, subsequent albums were equally as good and probably more successful, but The Crossing has a certain mystery, magic.
Subsequent albums never came close to The Crossing. Steeltown really hurt their momentum. I remember when it came out, expecting the same energy level and it left me and my mates flat. I appreciate it now but it still doesn't excel or excite like The Seer and Buffalo Hunters.
Thank you Andy! It’s always nice when one of your gems pops up on my UA-cam feed. Yes, Big Country really are that good! A joy to listen to and a joy to watch live. ❤️ Stuart, you are so missed! 😢 And to think this band lost the Best New Artist Grammy to Culture Club! 😬😒🙄
Thanks for posting all of the shows. It sure is a treat for a guy who is just now rediscovering Big Country. Used to listen to them back in the day but never got to see them live living in the US. Personally, Big Country is one of those bands who are so much better live than on a sterilized album. So much of their emotion is stripped away in the recording process.
@@BC1000Stars I just can’t get over it… talent from top to bottom! Normally I’d see the dancing and running around stage as a manufactured gimmick to entertain the crowd. It’s plain to see that’s not the case. They are truly “feeling the moment”. So cool to see!

Some day people will realise how good B.C. were.
I hope so. These guys were incredible

Wow! Great start with 'Angle Park'! And I've never heard 'Balcony' before! 😮
What a version of Balcony. Enjoy that they spotlighted Tony so much in this concert and his bass playing! Truly the best.
Yeah! I think this is the best live Balcony performance we have.
Incredible band
I bought the first album back when it was the only one. The songs 3-8 are all from that album. Oh what a trip.
World class perfomance from a world class band
That Yammy! 😍😍😍
Stuart was the Scottish Jimi Hendrix. I still miss him. Thanks for the excellent concert footage
Excellent I miss Stuart and Tony.should have been massive
I saw them in the Brangwyn Hall Swansea on this tour, they were excellent....Smokey Robinson's Tracks of my Tears as an encore❤
Balcony was such an under-used gem of a song!
Blowing the doors off Harvest Home- incredible Tony Butler

Goose bumps watching this. How good were they here. RIP Stuart
Mark's kit sounds awesome, his bass drum work on In a Big country is mega, really good sound/mix
Tremendous tv and sound coverage..top performance by a frontman genius…. He could sing and play very difficult guitar.. with Watson backing him
Not long after they blew Reading festival away - arm in arm with guys from Fife pouring Blue smirnoff down our necks. Brilliant band
What a pure sound. Musical giants.
Never seen this...great sound...

This is the first time I’ve seen footage of this concert, fantastic, really enjoyed watching thanks for posting.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Brilliant footage. Seeing and hearing The Storm followed by Porrohman is fantastic. 2019 and they still sound timeless.
I recall wanting to buy that shirt The Big Man is wearing when I was younger. AP sounds almost exactly like the album version. What a band!
I just love this version of chance thank you, a class band and such a sad loss of a fine person and musician
