How do I avoid digging nails, large iron or other large objects. 4. Why would I use all metal mode? 5. Do I use high or low iron bias and why? If your question is not answered, please leave me a comment and I may use it in my next video.
    I hope this Minelab Vanquish tutorial helps!
    Thank you so much for watching!

    Having just bought myself a vanquish 540, I'm watching some videos to get an idea of what it's capable of and how to understand the features it has - this video was by far the easiest to understand and covered all the questions I had. Thanks for creating this

      Oh and I should have mentioned in my video but forgot. If you’re in high trash and it’s falsifying too much, just decrease the sensitivity slightly and the signals will start to disappear. True signals will jump out at you a lot more. ☺️👍

      @@RelicDirtyhands well it's not about struggling but sharing knowledge through experience. Many UA-camrs just upload videos of digging the ground or talking basic stuff about a machine. In your video, you actually teach something. Something, you can't read from the manual.

    • @papaiatis
      @papaiatis 2 роки тому

      @@RelicDirtyhands but speaking of struggling :D Last time I was getting IDs of a wide spectrum for aluminum (between 12 and 34). Any idea why is that? Was it perhaps because of the size of the relic?

    • @RelicDirtyhands
      @RelicDirtyhands  2 роки тому

      @@papaiatis you got it! Size, shape, composition and placement in the ground play a role. The smaller the foil the lower the number. An odd chunky shaped foil will jump in multiple numbers. In most cases a stable ID will mean it’s composed of mostly one metal like a copper, silver, brass, lead, and gold. Also the round, flat placed circular items also give a more stable ID compared to A non circular shape. It’s how the eddy currents moves in the metal object. This and a lot more information is sent back to the machine and gives you an ID number. There is an acceptation of this rule, as someone learns this machine I tell them focus on the more stable ID’s at first. For example something that only jumps 2 to 3 numbers like 22,23,24,22,24 As you start understanding it’s language then you can move onto the more iffy tones.. you see when a coin is on edge it will read as a high,mid,high,mid tone. If you are in a high trash area it can start to be overwhelming, to quiet it down and hear clearer signals just drop down your sensitivity. This will also help reduce the amplification of false signals.. it will sound a lot more stable!. Using all metal really helps to make a choice to dig or not. As an example it can help discriminate a bottle cap. The shape is similar to a coin but the steel used can be heard. Having the iron on you can hear the iron grunt following the tone. This helps telling you it’s not the nicest signal and something is off.. the machine really talks to you but can take over a 100 hours to learn.
      A lot of the gold rings we dug don’t jump much in the lower numbers but a nice round ball of foil may sound similar. We all dig garbage especially as we learn the machine.. as an advanced digger, I dig a lot of target tones and numbers.. this is how you start recognizing it’s language. Once that learning curve is passed it’s all fun! The last thing I want to do is overwhelm you with information but if you understand how it works, it’s so much easier to understand what it’s telling you. When Minelab released this machine as a beginner machine I found it completely underrated. Simple enough to learn but powerful and accurate enough for the more advanced user.. incredible machine! By the way, what model of the Vanquish are you using?

    This is great advice for any model detector, I use a Garrett AT Pro and this applies just as much for my machine. Also if you’re searching in an area that you always go back to digging everything repeatable will get the junk out of the ground and make it easier to hunt in the future, mixed metals in the ground turns the ground into a battery of sorts and will affect your signals, so Dig it all is the best advice for beginners or experts.

    Thank you for this video. We just bought our 9 yr old daughter the Vanquish 340 for Christmas. As this is all of our first time with this hobby we decided at 9 the 340 would suit her needs and if she is really into it and takes the time and care metal detecting needs to get good at it we will upgrade possibly next year. For a child who isn't 10 yet 200 dollars was quite the investment, so we didn't want to go all in with a 500+ setup just yet haha!
    It makes some of the things you said not relate completely to our unit, but the overall advice is still very helpful. Wanted to leave a comment and like to help with engagement, thank you!

    • @RelicDirtyhands
      @RelicDirtyhands  2 роки тому

      Thank you so much, out of all the beginner units to choose from you purchased a great unit. We have kids and the Vanquish is perfect for them. For kids I’d recommend practicing in the sand first. Some kids find digging in the grass difficult and can get discouraged easily. We would often open the plugs for them. Unsure if you purchased a hand held pinpointing tool. It finds the target inside the hole. If not a good technique is to dig, sweep the coil over the hole. Once you dig out the target you take a handful of dirt and swing it over the coil until you find it. Items in the ground are dirty and difficult to see sometimes. We metal detected with one detector and took turns with the kids. It gave us years of quality time together. If she metal detect in parks make sure to learn how to make a proper hole without damaging the grass, all garbage found should always be disposed of in the garbage and not left around. There is a code of ethics to protect the hobby being band in parks.. try to leave no trace behind ☺️. If you have any questions leave me a comment and I can help you get through the learning curve. It can be a really exciting hobby. Merry Christmas to you and your family.

I was using a hand digger tool slightly wider than common ones. I cut a small plug about three inches deep and immediately saw a very large rusty nail. But I checked the hole with my pinpointer and an American quarter was right where the detector indicated at just over two inches deep.
    It was after mid August in Louisiana and nearly 100 degrees with a swarm of mosquitoes after me so I couldn`t detect very long but I found 24 modern coins, a few large lead fishing weights, and a nice rare (only 500 sold) commemorative Schrade pocket knife in good condition. My yard is loaded with many decades of metals so it will be the perfect place to learn a lot about this machine in the future.
    I know one thing for sure....you HAVE to use a handheld pinpointer with it because it can detect very tiny bits of copper, gold, brass, and even small lead pellets. But pinpointing the exact spot to dig down to the inch with my 340 coil is very easy without the pinpoint function of the more expensive versions. But then locating something like a tiny speck of brass or a pellet of lead in the plug without a pinpointer is maddening. The Vanquish hits hard on surprisingly TINY bits of metal and takes some getting used to. Even the "raise the coil" trick can fool you into passing up a near surface coin because it can hit nickels at 13 inches and dimes at 11+ inches.

    Hello Relic Dirtyhands and thank you for this great channel and video, it is very informative!! My Vanquish 440 was delivered yesterday which I bought to hopefully find our property stakes (we live in a small city) and do some local coin hunting. Yesterday I took it out briefly to see how it worked, I was able to pick up the recently installed stake on our neighbors land and even found a pull tab and another piece of trash. Today I went back out and it seemed to be giving me all kinds of random signals at different strengths. I have tried all the different modes including all metal, rebooting it at different heights off the ground with no difference. Also I turn my sensitivity all the way up and then lower it until it is quiet. But when I start to sweep the coil it gets chatty again. Yes I am new to detectors, my brother had a real nice Garret or White years ago, but I haven't owned one myself. I have been practicing in my yard for now. I've read the manual and watched tons of videos on here, is it just me not being used to the detector (would wearing my headphones help me recognize the tones better), our soil or maybe the detector itself? Any advice or help you may have would be greatly appreciated. I know practice makes perfect but thought maybe you may see something I am doing wrong. Thanks again for your help and a great channel!!!

      When you say it seemed to give you random signals, was this when your swinging or when the detector is not moving?

    • @RelicDirtyhands
      @RelicDirtyhands  2 роки тому

      I don’t think it’s soil conditions, multi IQ is stable in most ground. Since you are close to houses it could be EMI electromagnetic interference. I have some sites I have to lower my sensitivity a lot. You can tell because it happens when you don’t even move the coil. All sorts of random tones and signals appear. If you power it off then back on, it will do an automatic noise cancel. Reduce sensitivity until it’s no longer chatty. Another thing that can cause this is a loose connector. Just make sure the coil cord is well connected. Last thing I can think of is the cable dangling too close to the coil. Make sure you twist it around the shaft so it does hang over the coil. Don’t twist it so much that there is too much tension when you move the coil up and down but just enough that it doesn’t interfere with your coil. I hope some of this helps ☺️👍

    My 440 discriminates numbers 25-30 on coin mode that turn out to be a large iron nails even after 360 scan over it. Do you think mine is faulty? Also my depth level can show it being lower than 10inch even if sitting on top of ground… the ground I’m on seems to have heavy metal soil as the pin pointer and handheld pointer I have goes off in all directions in the soil

    • @RelicDirtyhands
      @RelicDirtyhands  2 роки тому +2

      Depending on the position of nails some may still sound pretty solid. Reducing your sensitivity can help this. Some items for example thin foil can trick detectors when in comes to the depth gauge. When a get a weaker signal that jumps to 2-4” in depth, I usually run my pinpointer on the surface first. The depth gauge is an approximate but it’s often accurate.

    • @RelicDirtyhands

    Although I love my Simplex, I have always been impressed with the Vanquish 540 and recently bought one. I watched your videos on this detector that you posted about a year ago (they are awesome!). I am curious what settings you and Eric most frequently used and with high or low iron bias? I mostly search for relics but am most excited when I find an old large cent or a silver. There are a lot of square nails at most of the sites I detect. Thanks for your really great videos! Rick

    • @RelicDirtyhands
      @RelicDirtyhands  2 роки тому +2

      Usually Eric used Jewelry mode in high trash and relic mode for quieter areas on the farm field. A low iron bias is the preferred setting but there might be some areas that it might feel overwhelming and even a reduced sensitivity may not help. In extreme iron if it drives you crazy using the default of low iron bias being “off” can make a difference on stabilizing it. Play and try out the different settings and see if it feels and reacts better for the site conditions you are working. Coin mode, great for cherry picking coins in moderate trash but may not be well suited for relics. Jewelry mode recovers the fastest. Great for high trash situations but it doesn’t get as deep as relic mode. Jewelry mode will pick up targets of different sizes like relic mode. Relic mode is the deepest but doesn’t recover as fast. In high trash it could skip over good targets close to a trash target. It’s all about balance with the site conditions and finds. We can change our settings a few times on the same site ☺️

    You have provided SUPER information and help to my son and I. If you get an iffy scratchy signal with fluctuating IDs, and probe the ground with a 12 inch screwdriver,,, will the detector in turn more accurately identify the iffy scratchy sounding target? I'm thinking that "breaking" the ground , even with a small hole, but deep enough would help it penetrate the ground better and sharpen the signal.. What are your thoughts. I like those coils you tested, too bad they can't work on my Vanquish.

    • @RelicDirtyhands
      @RelicDirtyhands  Рік тому

      No, it may not help much. The reason being, those iffy scratchy sounding targets is because of the position of the item or if it’s partially mask by other targets in close proximity. If it’s there, not there, there again. This is a good sign of targets too close together and can’t recover fast enough. A repeatable jumpy target is more like a coin slightly tilted or an item of mix metals. When in high trash it’s best to dig the iffy scratchy signals, when you make a plug, you disturb the position or other targets close. After I make a plug, I swing the detector over my plug, then the hole. Usually if there is a good target, it should clean up. Poking a screw driver in the ground may scratch or damage a target, you risk pushing it down further, maybe even past the detectors depth. The frequencies are great at getting down into even mineralized soils. ☺️👍 Hope this helps!

If we use that instead of the V10, will it go deeper and the even bigger question: Will the IDs be improved as well? I ask because we're working a field with very little trash that's littered with Wheat pennies. Don't really need the Target Separation of Coin Mode, so will RELIC Mode help as well with Target IDs if the 440 doesn't have to worry about target ID'ing? Big difference compared to old school detecting. Again, You've been a GIANT help. Minelab's own site does not address the V12.

      You’re welcome, I’m happy to hear. The V12 will hit deeper than the 10 and should help the quality of sound on deeper targets. Relic mode would be the mode I would run by the sounds of the location. It’s the deepest mode. Great for low trash, it has a slower recovery speed giving you more depth and a more accurate target ID. In areas you hear more trash, using a mode with a slow recovery could be counterproductive, you see when targets are close together, it won’t recover fast enough, the target beside it could become choppy. In area’s of high trash, jewelry mode has a fast recovery speed. Here is a video explaining different shapes and sizes of coils. The coils are not the ones from the vanquish but the way they work is the same. It can help give you a good base of information ☺️👍 Coiltek Coils For The Minelab Equinox Metal Detector

    A friend has lost her platinum wedding ring in a small local park.
    What sort of tones and numbers would I be looking for?

    • @RelicDirtyhands
      @RelicDirtyhands  2 роки тому

      It really depends on the size and thickness, the one we found was a mens wedding band, it rang in around 14. I would suggest reducing your sensitivity to focus on surface finds, only if it was lost recently. 👍. The tone should be a loud, repeatable if it was recently lost. It can jump a number or two but it’s a good hit like the vanquish does on coins. It hits sharp and good but as a mid tone.

    Hi again, LAST question :) Does increasing the sensitivity (regardless of mode), increase Target ID?

    • @RelicDirtyhands
      @RelicDirtyhands  Рік тому

      Sensitivity is an amplifier, or helps amplify week faint targets. Target ID’s should be the same, with the exemption of targets at maximum depth. When targets are really deep, the target ID is not as accurate. Example a small cent, max depth depending on soil conditions is 10” on a coin that size, usually it rings up as a 20/21. When it’s max depth, the target ID might go lower to 15. At this time I will increase my sensitivity to try to hear the target better. Using a detector always on a chatty high sensitivity is not good. Why using a stable sensitivity is best.

    Hi ! I just ordered vanquish 540 with a 12" coil. Can anyone give me pros and cons on this detector? Most hunting will be done in shallow salt water in Florida. All answers appreciated.

    • @RelicDirtyhands
      @RelicDirtyhands  2 роки тому +1

      Pro, it’s multi frequency and handles salt really well.
      Con, its not waterproof so one slip and it’s soaked.
      Pro, it can find the smallest gold.
      Pro it’s simple to use and will be a lot of fun. ☺️
      It’s a great detector and I’m sure you will enjoy.

    One more question what coil size would be best for parks,beaches,fields etc

    • @RelicDirtyhands
      @RelicDirtyhands  Рік тому +1

      Small coils have better separation between targets. So high trash, small coil. Which usually covers parks. Here our beaches are pretty hard hit and quiet. I need more depth and coverage than separation, therefore the larger coil is what’s needed. High trash, small coil. Less trash large coil. Small coils have high separation but less depth and is also more sensitive to smaller targets. Larger the coil is the deeper it goes but less sensitive to smaller targets and can struggle in high trash. ☺️👍 hope this helps

    Are Coin and Jewelry basically the same in terms of depth and separation?

    • @RelicDirtyhands
      @RelicDirtyhands  3 роки тому +1

      Great question, there are differences between both modes in regards to depth and separation capabilities. Coin has the highest target separation but less depth than jewelry, Jewelry will have a little more depth than coin mode but has less separation. Relic has the most depth but the least separation. ☺️👍

    Hey i got a question, i want to get a 540 really bad i currently have a bounty hunter and find lots of trashy barbwire. What setting do you think would be the best in a field that has some cool iron things but tons of barbwire? (Im also kind of new to metal detecting)

    • @RelicDirtyhands
      @RelicDirtyhands  2 роки тому +2

      The vanquish has a relic mode, this helps find objects of different sizes. It goes deep, iron relics have a larger surface and ring up higher on the target ID range. I don’t know the bounty hunter but sometimes a slightly reduced sensitivity can help minimize false signals on wires, nail tips and spikes. Hope this helps ☺️👍

    Great video BTW, I've owned about 10 detectors in the last 20 years and am no expert, I get in and out of the hobby and sell the machine, OK so I stumbled upon this vanquish 540 pro about 2 mos ago after being w/o a detector for the past 3 years and I still don't get that little horseshoe, with all my past machines iron always makes a grunt..I get it, what I don't get is I can turn on the horseshoe in any mode, don't know why, if I want to hear Iron I search in AM
    I tried AM with and w/o the horseshoe showing and can't tell the difference, maybe I'm getting senile in my old age, can someone explain why I need this feature, I did adjust the iron volume upgrade as the machine already came with the latest upgrade, sorry for the long post and I love your way of explaining things! Thanks

      No worries! I love answering questions on the Vanquish. Horse shoe on is All metal, you’ll notice it’s a discrimination short cut button. Pressing it you should hear and see all ferrous target ID’s from -9 to 0 and non ferrous from 1-40. Horse shoe off you will no longer hear or see the iron signals. It’s really a choice of preference if you like to hear iron or not. Personally I prefer hearing all the target ID’s including iron. It allows me to hear if the target consists of iron or not. The iron volume upgrade will allow you to adjust how loud you hear your iron. Did you change it or leave it at it’s default? Each mode is different, depth, sensitivity and recovery speed, with the preset modes you have a choice for all metal in each one. Example coin mode vs jewelry. Coin mode is great for coin size items but jewelry will find the smaller finer jewelry. Relic mode is the deepest and it will find the largest range of target sizes.. with each preset mode you have an all metal option that doesn’t change the presets except for discrimination. I hope this helps.

      @@RelicDirtyhands Thanks for the reply, So basically if I'm in say coin mode for example and I turn on the nail showing on the screen I should hear the iron grunt w/o going in the AM mode?

    • @RelicDirtyhands
      @RelicDirtyhands  3 роки тому

      @@johnspooner4128 horse shoe is all metal.. in coin mode, you will see some segments notched out. Pressing the horse will show all segments will be black. The nail on the screen means you are running a low iron bias. On the 540 you have low and high. The default is usually nail off which means high.. Mix metals can be really confusing to a detector. Iron bias tells the machine the likelihood it’s iron, high iron bias will classify more targets in the ferrous region. A low iron bias is the more natural response, you may dig more garbage but you will also be able to get those good targets in those situations. High iron bias is easier when starting with this machine.. but if you’ve been metal detecting the same sites for years., low iron bias may squeak a few more out. Iron bias will not let you hear the iron.. What is your iron volume set to? To hear iron all your segments on the top of your lcd screen needs to be black and iron audio need to be loud enough fir you to hear it.

      @@RelicDirtyhands In AM yes of course I hear all metals and a nice grunt over iron, when in say coin mode not AM I don't hear iron, when I hold the horseshoe button down till the nail appears I still don't hear iron. Seems to me if I want to hear iron I need to be in AM otherwise that nail on the screen doesn't do much, Still confused?

      @@johnspooner4128 ahaha! A short press of the horse shoe will put you in AM a longer press will bring you to iron bias! So a quick 1 second press for AM and a longer 3-5 second press to enter into iron bias 👍

      The more you dig the more you will hear the differences, many say it takes a good 100 hours to learn a new machine. Take some items that you would like to find and test them out.
