    I grew up flying with my father. He owned two different Mooney an E model being the last. Out of Wichita he flew a 5 state area for business. Good times. 😊

      Thanks Daniel. The number of GA airports far exceed the number of commercial airports. The same is true for many states, not just Colorado. Small planes really unlock a lot of possibilities.

    Flown around Longmont lots coming out of KBJC and RMFS. Good little airport. Heard a RMFS plane out there in pattern with ya! Have to admit, a Mooney is a very tempting aircraft to purchase.

      rrz464, I'm not surprised, we get a lot of student traffic from Metro in the pattern at Longmont. I've been very happy with the Mooney. It's fast, efficient, and has a wide operating envelope. Hop on board, you won't regret it.

    Great video, loved the high quality that make reading your instruments possible. I didn't see you adjust the prop speed. Was it full forward the entire flight? Thanks for posting.

      Paul Dirschka great question. I pulled the prop back to 2,500 rpm once I reached 15,500 ft. The figures I’m referencing were all at 2.5k rpm.

    I’m based in denver. Good to see that this plane does well in the mountains. I’m very tall (6’8”). How’s the legroom and headroom?

      The legroom is surprisingly good. I'm 6' 3" and fit quite comfortably. The seats are low on the floor and you sit with your feet way out in front - think sports car configuration. I typically fly around with the seat on the 2nd to last notch in the track. Headroom will be a little tighter, but as you can see from my videos, I have a few inches to spare above my head.

    Videos are great! I have serial number 2720, same year and model. I like the paint scheme too. What brand is your autopilot?

      Thanks Daniel Ruff. Your Mooney came off the line just a couple months before mine. The autopilot is a S-tec System 50. It’s a good little x-country AP but struggles in turbulence (it’s rate based). The dream would be to upgrade to a GFC 500 once approved.

    Great videos and so interesting, especially because I live on the Front Range and am learning quite a bit about flying here. Thanks for the videos! Now I seriously need to pace myself and not runout of videos. Great content, thank you so much for sharing! Is that a CO detector on your far right panel? Those C5 and your Garmin 650 really give you all you need (except speed breaks and de-icing). ;o) Really fun to see these flights! (And I watch a bunch of aviation channels). I'm planning to finish my Private certificate in the spring and so now all the tidbits are way more impactful. Tail winds!

      Thank you Benoit Cordoba. Yep, that's a cheap battery-operated CO detector on my panel. I'd rather rely on something with an alarm than be expected to notice a dot changing color while suffering from carbon monoxide poisoning.       Bruce Smith it does, although I rarely use it. I find there’s enough of a greenhouse effect in the low-wing Mooney to keep the cabin pretty comfortable.

    So you went full rich for takeoff? We had acceleration problems on a high DA day in west TX; 172 didn't want to go. Your Mooney seemed fine though. A nice ride through the mountains. Thanks for taking us along.

      I did. Mooneys are tightly cowled aircraft and the early models have a tendency to run hot. If I don’t need the added performance, I prefer to pour a little extra fuel in the engine on takeoff. The exception is on the ground - I lean until the engine sputters to prevent plug fowling. Telluride has a nice long runway so I didn’t need to get off the ground right away. In the case of your 172, you have a fixed-pitch propeller so leaning for max RPM is very important. A constant speed propeller gives the Mooney a little more flexibility.

      Nice work. The engine can only make 21 or 22 inches of MP up there. You can’t hurt the motor by properly leaning it out when it’s at such a low power setting. Before takeoff off run that thing up until its 75-100 rich of peak so your at best power. If you want to make yourself feel better add another 25 degrees to that. But full rich is not a great idea
      We just lost a United pilot and his wife taking off from there. He could have improperly managed his mixture setting on his naturally aspirated V35 Bonanza.

    Great video-
    I’m new to the whole flying bug.
    Question: I’m not afraid of heights but you wouldn’t catch me being the first one in line to Rock Climb a Mountain either.
    I know when I stand close to the edge of a large drop off I feel uneasy.
    In flight sims or UA-cam videos you don’t actually feel the turbulence or actually the feeling of being suspended up at 1,500 or 5,000ft it higher.
    So do GA pilots ever get that uneasy feeling while flying & if so does it tend to go away the more Times one flies?
    I’m not talking about doing barrel rolls or any acrobatics etc.

      Michael, good question. When I first started flying, I would occasionally get “butterflies” in my stomach. It's something that does go away with time and experience. The first time you stall an airplane (required during your PPL training) it's pretty unnerving. Now, I don’t think twice about it. In fact, I think it’s kind of fun. Like most things in life, the more you know, the more you understand, the less you fear.

    Great video. Thanks for sharing. I just bought a Mooney M20C and I’m debating upgrading my panel with 2xG5s, 650, 375 and AP or just rip the whole panel out and go all glass. Any thoughts, advice or opinions on your panel and would you do anything different if you did it again?

      Jeff, congrats on the new (to you) Mooney. I toyed with lots of options before arriving at the G5's and 650. I seriously considered a G3x but as you'll find, panel space is a premium in a M20C. I like the redundancy of the dual G5 AHRS plus it allowed me to keep a number of my legacy instruments as backups. I already had fuel flow and EFS. If you don't have either of those, that might sway you towards a G3x. Be careful though, its easy to spend more on avionics than your plane is worth.

    Great video I just noticed when you departed telluride you pushed the mixture full rich do you not lean on the Departure just curious I fly a piper Comanche and at 10,000 feet prior to departure I lean my engine for maximum horsepower I think you said it’s normally aspirated not turbo charged

      Great question Curtis and one a couple others have asked as well... In this case, I intentionally went full rich. My Mooney runs hot at slow speeds and high-power settings. The runway is long at Telluride and terrain falls away from you. In this instance I opted for a cool engine, rather than max power.

      Hey Daserdynski, sorry, that’s not a video I’m going to make. I don’t fly east of the Mountain Village in Telluride for good reason. That tragic, tragic accident serves as a prime example of why mountain flying training is so important. As far as I’m concerned there’s only one way in, and one way out of Telluride airport - the CONES VOR.

    When you are training for your mountain rating do they always provide oxygen?

      I personally haven't experienced oxygen being provided. Truth be told, much of the mountain flying curriculum focuses on flying below 12,500 feet - through mountain passes, avoiding downdrafts, engine leaning, etc. As you begin exploring high altitude flying, I encourage you to do it intentionally, incrementally, and with a pulse oximeter.

      It's a 4 seat aircraft. Flying with 2-3 people is comfortable. Any more than that it gets a bit tight.

      rmhanseniii, you can survive at 15,500 feet without oxygen. In Colorado we regularly hike to 14k feet without oxygen. In fact, people have even climbed Everest without oxygen (over 29k feet). For flying though, we have regulations imposed by the FAA. They require pilots to be on oxygen above certain altitudes.

      Man and a Mooney Wow, it was alarming to see oxygen tubes on the pilot without some type of medical reason. Living in New Jersey that type of altitude is completely foreign to me... you could summit Everest without oxygen but it doesn’t happen that often

      Well you're right. But definitely lean it as you have EDM 700 engine monitor. I fly M20J and i lean so the EGT shows at sea level roughly about 1300 and you see a max RPM increase. You need all the power to leave the runway! There is a lot of article you'll fine on MooneySpace.com about proper leaning on a Mooney!

      Guys, I appreciate the comments about leaning. I really do. That said, in my airplane, on this day, I made the conscious decision to go full-rich. I know how to lean properly. I live at an altitude higher than some of you guys cruise. 99% of my take-offs are “high altitude” takeoffs. The problem is, my C runs hot. I’m working to resolve these issues. For now, I keep the mixture rich and it helps to cool things down. You’ll see, as soon as I took off and built some airspeed I started leaning. If I had done this on the takeoff roll my CHT’s would have been 500 degrees.

      You're the PIC so what ever works for you..... i had a similar problems with my M20J. After intensive research, I installed Tempest Iridium Fine Wire Spark Plug and i got to tell you, YES its way more expensive but it will get rid of your problems and the engine will run alot smother, cooler and more power. And all your EGT, CHT will be similar and evenly!
