It’s been a while… here’s why: I purchased a new prop for the Mooney. She’s finally back in the air after a 4 month hiatus. I’ll plan to detail how I arrived at this new STC, the options I weighed, and the performance benefits I gained (if any) so keep an eye out for that.     I'm a pilot living in Longmont, but waaaay out of currency and proficiency. It's great to see your trips up into the mountains from LMO. I'm curious about your gear indication lights. The right main was showing red on your approach into Aspen. Is that an abnormality? Also, what a relief that the forced landing was successful for the other pilot!

      Keen eye. That’s actually an Appareo Stratus (ADSB receiver), not a gear indicator. As you fly lower in the mountains you’ll struggle to receive ADSB-in signals - as indicated by those changing lights.

    I lived at the east end of the Marble strip forty years ago. The owner of the strip at that time flew a Mooney in and camped at the group of trees next to the river. Great place....except for tourist in summer and snow in winter. LOL

    Ah, my favorite airplane - an early Mooney with manual gear. Back in the day I flew one coast to coast several times, all over East of the Mississippi and even to the Caribbean a few times.

    I fly 4 all the time. But I want to do a back seat setup so I can hold 3 people and 3 sets of golf clubs! So have the ability to lay one or both back seats down

    Question. What does wilderness have to do with where you can or can't fly? Seems like I see planes flying above wilderness all the time.

      Pilots are requested (although not required) to maintain 2,000 ft. separation from Wilderness Areas. As I'm flying below the mountain tops in this video, I'm clearly not 2000 ft. above. Hence the reason I aimed to stay over the road.

    What irks a Canadian pilot transiting down there are radio calls that don't use the airport name that is on the charts. In this case I'd be calling up Vance Brand; and I'm hearing pilots talking about Longmont and since I don't see Longmont airport on the VFR charts I'm thinking it is a common frequency also used in a completely different location, hence I don't have to worry about them. Recently flew into Hudson Valley Reg'al, KPOU, Poughkeepsie, NY... listening on the radio for any of those names. But the controller comes up identifying himself as Dutchess County. JEEZ. What gives down there, guys??

    This is what GA needs! Your common sense facts based approach is refreshing. No hyperbole no over focusing on one thing as if it’s the end all be all of any issue. You’re doing GA a huge service with your common sense approach and calm demeanor. All your videos are great!       a ceramic detail can profit you a G or 2, i work as one for martin avaition, its just a small learning process and building clinentel thats takea while, best to work as one and learn from the inside out first

    Thanks for the video. Can you provide the waypoints used in your flight plan. I can’t make this work at 12,500 MSL. What am I missing.

      The route is approximately "KLMO FOOOT RLG LINDZ KASE". If you have access to ForeFlight, turn off all your other map layers and turn on the "Hazard Advisor". Other than crossing the Divide at FOOOT, you could fly the whole thing at 9,500 ft.

    If I ever buy my own plane a Mooney is it. Values are certainly going to go up in the future because the company is out of business and they are very desirable AC for GA pilots.

      A stall is a stall. That's the primary reason we multiply VsO by 1.3 - for a safety net. If it's gusty, add a little more buffer. Far too many pilots believe that stalls occurs at a specific speed. It's all about load factor. You can quickly recover a stalling wing by unloading it - although I'd never encourage anyone to try that close to the ground.

    Well done. I have owned three Mooney's over the years and used them a lot up and down the West Coast. Now have the K model with intercooler. Such a great IFR platform but never focused in on a landing technique. Found myself always fast attempting to avoid those "shear stalls".     In all honesty it is the compound or polish that mostly determines how gritty the polishing is , so using the same compound with different polisher or pad really makes no difference. That’s why there’s cutting compound, polish , and fishing polish just like sand paper, because that’s what polishing is basically, sanding of micro layers of either, pollutants , ceramic coating , clear coatings or paint. Hes doing a 3 step polish with only 2 grits of polish.

      @schnabel69 I never said Mooneys were Cessnas. If anything, I highlighted the major differences between the two. I've owned my Mooney for 7 years and have 1000 hours in it. Does that make me an expert? Probably not, but I never claimed to be. I put out this video to help others who in my experience fly approaches way to fast.
