Skiing in Aspen - Longmont (KLMO) to Aspen (KASE) in a Mooney

  • In this video, I share one of my favorite things about owning an airplane: skiing day trips! My brother (Schuyler) joins us on this flight to/from Aspen. En route I share some basic mountain flying knowledge with him and even grant an opportunity to fly the Mooney. A day trip to Aspen by car would take a grueling 8 hours (under the best of circumstances). The Mooney shortens this trip to just 50 minutes each way. Enjoy!

    Enjoyed the video. Thank you. Have a couple of questions if you don’t mind. I saw the 2 Garmin G5’s but didn’t see the primary AH, etc. How that?. Also how come you didn’t cross the hold short line 15/33 before calling up ground. Not sure if regs are different in the US but in Canada we cross thus vacating the runway environment and then make the call to ground. Thanks again.

    • @ManandaMooney
      @ManandaMooney  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Flyboy, you’re right, I should have cleared the runway... The reason I didn’t is because that intersection at A4 is a notoriously busy spot. It sits right between the non-movement area and the restricted area of the terminal. It took me all of 2 secs to call ground and make sure I was cleared into Atlantic. Regarding your other question about the G5’s… They’re certified to be used as my primary Attitude and HSI in the Mooney. I still have a primary Airspeed and Altimeter.

    Recently discovered your channel and subscribed. Fantastic content. Love your knowledge of the Colorado mountains, the names of the peaks and towns. Question on this video, at the end: it appeared you stopped and called ground before crossing the hold short bars, didn’t “dash across” and were thus not clear of the runway. Maybe? Or was something else going on. Keep up the great content. I’m based in Texas but a friend and I just secured a hangar in Alamosa (he has mountain property not far from La Veta pass) and plan to fly there often in our turbo retract 182.

    • @ManandaMooney
      @ManandaMooney  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks Troy, glad you’re enjoying the videos. Re: the hold-short bars you’re right, I failed to “dash across”. I already turned off the runway when tower asked me to “turn right when able”. In an effort to relay that quickly and concisely I said “clear at A4” …probably should have said “CLEARING at A4”. One thing to note about that intersection: it’s contiguous to the non-movement area and the commercial traffic restricted area. It took me all of 3 seconds to check in with ground and clarify where they wanted me to go. Thanks for watching and hopefully making me a better pilot.

    I wanna know how you fit your skis and boards in your Mooney and if it's possible to fit 4 setups and 4 people. I've only tried with 4 snowboards in a 182 but needed to take the bindings off. Also! I fly out of KBJC!

    • @ManandaMooney
      @ManandaMooney  3 роки тому

      Cameron, There's no way I'd be able to fit 4 people and 4 sets of skis in the Mooney. I rarely fly in the mountains with more than one passenger. My plane just doesn't have the performance figures to comfortably support it. For loading, I put the tips into the "hat rack" area, and the tails sit right against front seat backs. I throw a ratchet strap around them to prevent ski's/poles from becoming projectiles.

    I think another video detailing your departure procedure from KASE would be valuable to the GA community. So many people get in trouble flying out of there and there have been a number of fatal accidents over the years from folks in non-turbo piston singles like yours flying into canyons on the departure that they don't have the climb performance to get out of.

    • @ManandaMooney
      @ManandaMooney  2 роки тому

      I've thought about making a video like that for a while. I'll see if I can bump it up in my queue. My recommendation is to ALWAYS depart "down valley" from ASE. That's following the Roaring Fork valley NW towards Carbondale and Glenwood Springs. ATC is very familiar with that request and often expects it from pistons.

      Sure N M, It was basically Longmont (KLMO), Boulder (KBDU), Kremmling VOR (RLG), Red Table VOR (DBL), direct to Aspen (KASE). However, just before we get to the Red Table VOR Aspen approach cleared me to fly south (heading 180) then direct to the town of Aspen (SE direction). I flew the backside of Red Mountain and into the town of Aspen from the East. From there, a simple right turn has you lined up for RW33. Enjoy!

    • @ManandaMooney
      @ManandaMooney  2 роки тому

      Good question David. As far as ATC is concerned, I have an "M20P". There are two primary designations for Mooney's in the system - M20P (naturally aspirated), and M20T (turbo). The reason for this difference is performance - namely climb and cruise. Examples of M20Ps are the A,B,C,D,E,F,J,R. Examples of M20Ts are the K,M,Acclaim, or any of the aforementioned variants with an aftermarket turbo.

      @@ManandaMooney Thanks for your reply but I give an example of an airplane I was following one day in FlightAware . In FlightAware I put his N number and it was showing a M20P instead of a M20C but when I see his registration it shows a M20C .

      @@DavidGonzalez-ry6zz Yes, that's exactly what I was saying. FlightAware (or ATC) will refer to the M20-A,B,C,D,E,F,J,R as an "M20P". Registration will be the actual model, tracking/filing will be either a "P" or "T".

      Michael, as far as ATC is concerned, all the Mooney models (A, B, C, D, E, K, J…) can be distilled into two categories. 1) M20P “papa” naturally aspirated Mooney , or 2) M20T “ tango” turbo Mooney.

    Does your gear really go up that quickly, or was the video sped up? Dumb question from a fixed gear Cirrus pilot. Great videos sir!

    • @ManandaMooney
      @ManandaMooney  3 роки тому

      Sclera, that was real-time - the gear actually goes up that fast. I have a “Johnson Bar” Mooney which is a completely manual system. The landing gear operation loosely resembles a handbrake in a car. The gear moves as fast as the operator’s arms. While it may look like showing off, it behooves a Mooney pilot to get the gear up ASAP after takeoff because it becomes harder to operate as airspeed increases. If something goes wrong, and you need to abort a takeoff, it only takes about a half second to get the gear back down again.
