Austrian keeper was diabolical, as were most of his team-mates. England had the same amount of chances against Poland as they did against Austria, the difference was that they came up against an inspired goalkeeper and a more determined defence a few weeks later.

Sir Alf Ramsey the England supremo had arranged that friendly international fixture with Austria on 26 September 1973 at Wembley as the final warm up for the all-important World Cup qualifier against Poland at the same venue on 17 October.
Sir Alf had wanted a settled England line up that would face the Poles and that meant no room for England skipper who was relegated to the substitute bench.Norman Hunter took over Moore's position and Martin Peters England captaincy.
That night England ran riot to score seven goals to nil against a hapless Austrian team with goals from Mick Channon(2),Allan Clarke(2),Chivers,Currie and Bell.
It was eight years ago at Wembley that Austria scored a shock 3-2 win over England and forced Ramsey then to rethink on his England side and that of Jimmy Greaves in the 1966 World Cup finals.
Though it was a crushing victory for England it did them no good a few weeks later when Poland ended the 1966 World champions hopes of playing in the 1974 World Cup finals in West Germany by drawing 1-1 at Wembley.

That was one heck of a strike force England had there. No wonder it ended 7-0 in the home team's favour!

Of course, you're right, everyone knows that... What I meant (and should've been more specific about) is that every time, after eliminating us you never really achieved anything in the finals :) To us, beating England in 1973 was the beginning of an amazing road in West Germany a year later. Cheers.

2.48 the most clear cut penalty I've ever seen!. The ref must have been asleep or he felt sorry for Austria.

I was at this Game but got stuck in traffic and missed the first goal . Great team effort against a poor Austrian side .

Well, my abiding memory of Norman Hunter is of him kicking people's kneecaps off, but on this evidence he could pass a ball as well.

England WERE very strong then .Extreemly unlucky not to progress to the finals in 74.2 weeks after this game they pulverized the Poles only to draw and be eliminated.

The Polish national team played a very poor match at Wembley with England. They never played so defensively after that. We had a lot of luck. It is true, however, that England was very strong then. Your team has a chance for the world championship in West Germany

Very good teams are winning very bad matches. Its was very bad performance for Poland. Every VERY GOOD team has it. It is sport, it is normal. Poland proved in the next ten years they was big team. In this time,.where was team of England ?!!!??? I remember team from Scotland, NI in world cup when proud England didn't played. Why????? In seventhieh only only only famous ENGLISH player in Eastern Europe who everybody knew was Kevin Keegan. Stars were from Scotland, Wales, RiO or NI ( Norman Whiteshide) were level above these players like Shilton, Clarke, Hunter or Chivers.Very Very Poor team lost.Probably the worst in Englang history

A meaningless victory against a poor side gave false optimism for the next game against Poland and we know what happened there.

You are right. England played a friendly game against Italy after being eliminated by Poland. That game against Italy should have been scheduled before the game against Poland. You improve your game playing against tough opponents, not soft ones.

No qualification 1962 to 1980. 1966 hosts, 1970 holders. Got to Spain in 1982.

It was a warm up game, after which English papers screamed; "Poland, we're waiting for you!"
Then, English fans 'welcomed' our players with chants 'animals!'
I know, you guys beat us so many times afterwards, but NEVER achieved what we did in 74.

PrZemek44 It doesn't matter how many we've beaten you since. Whenever we play Poland, the country remembers 1973 and starts to panic!!!

Wcale niewykluczone, że Anglicy załatwili sobie wtedy ten wynik, żeby mieć straszaka. Przecież to widać, że ci Austriacy stoją zamiast grać.

Loads of respect for Poland here. They were the Olympic champions and finished third in Germany. A quality outfit.
I think they were the seeded team in Group F in Mexico in 1986. So I was obviously shitting myself knowing we had to beat them then. Turned out ok in the end- but this England team had been world champions 7 years previously and only expected to top a three team group. Well played Poland- got the win in Katowice and held out for the draw at Wembley

That was a very good Poland side. The game v Poland at Wembley was between them being Olympic champions in 72, and 3rd place in The World Cup in 74. There was no being lucky for Poland.
