My first game at Wembley, I was about 10. Fantastic night. That kit was way beyond its time compared to that NI kit.

Northern Ireland would go on to lose 4-0 to France in Paris, scrape a 1-1 draw at home to Scotland and then get lose emphatically 3-0 to Wales in Wrexham (meaning that they finished bottom of the Home International Championship). But despite these results, they went onto to have a brilliant World Cup in Spain - the highlight of which was beating the host nation in Valencia.

I was at this match. There were some Northern Ireland fans below and to the right of us at the start of the game. They tried to taunt the England fans: "You only sing when you're winning". The fact was we hadn't had time to stop before we went one up. :-)

I remember reading in a local tabloid on what Cyrille Regis said : "My favorite players are skillful players : Glenn Hoddle and Laurie Cunningham". Here we see Regis and Hoddle play together. I just can imagine Hoddle and Cunningham ever played together which never happened.

Potentiality we would have ripped the world apart in the late 70s, with Steve coppell and cunningham on the wings bryan robson with hoddle in midfield was a no brainer but robbo and cunningham played for west brom so never featured. And by 82 cunningham was struggling with injuries,

@@philh8288 Yep, im a huge fan of the England team that Greenwood started to develop in the late 1970's the 1982 squad was full of gems..but Greenwood fell under the influence of Done Howe and was unlucky with injuries with Brooking and keegan, i accept the point about Coppell/Cunningham on the wings..strange the latter never made the cut for the 1982 team in Spain..Not playing Hoddle in the knockout stages was incomprehensible..

Went into this Tournament in fine form after just about qualifying for them. Had a great 82 world cup, unbeaten in 5 games and conceding only 1 goal. The biggest mistake was bringing on an unfit Keegan and Brooking vs Spain which we had to win.

Of course. Another underused player. As was the incomparable Hoddle. It's as if eng managers couldn't deal with players more talented than them. Had to be "one of the lads!" The worst had to be Revie but it's v close. Taylor?

He didn't score as many as he should've but Wilkins tended to score on big occasions - internationals, the FA Cup Final...
Some of Hoddle's passing was fantastic, like finding Keegan to set up Cyrille Regis for his header. Francis also had a fine game. Why didn't we do better in Spain??! Yeah, Keegan was injured, but it wasn't just about him.

    • @charliepeebles

+KitCurranRadioShow Greenwoods negative tactics and obsession with work rate were the reasons England didn't do better in Spain. Yes, they were solid and hard to beat but they just weren't creative or adventurous enough to go out and beat good international teams.

He is the 1st British player who played for Real Madrid. He is also one of very few Real Madrid players who got standing ovation at Camp Nou from Barcelona supporters.
I wonder why he didn't get enough caps for England; maybe he was injured many times during those years.
