    This Sky programme was from back in 1997 ... They showed the old ITV highlights of this game and the 1977 Wembley World Cup qualifier between the two teams (when England won 2-0, but missed out on qualifying) ... It was shown as part of the build-up to that year's WC Qualifiers between England and Italy for France 98

    I'm Brazilian, I was 10 years old and I watched the games of this Bicentennial commemorative tournament live on TV. Despite Brazil having a team made up of excellent players, such as Rivelino, Zico, Falcão, Roberto Dinamite, Búfalo Gil... the team did not perform well. In the debut they had difficulties against England, Keegan came free twice and shot hard, our goalkeeper Leão made excellent saves, and at the end of the game Roberto Dinamite scored the winning goal. We beat Cosmos, that is, the US team with Pelé and Chinaglia and in the last game the team finally played good football and beat Italy, by the same score as in the 1970 World Cup final. Unfortunately, just as England won 3-2 and then lost to Italy to qualify for the Argentine Cup, later, in 1982, Brazil's super team lost the Cup to Italy, in a game with absurd failures by the Brazilian defense, by 3-2.

    Jimmy Rimmer did not look at fault for the goals. It must have been a blow to be be taken off at half-time. Interesting to see that Joe Corrigan did play 9 times for England, even up to 1982.

    I remember this game as an 11 year old, no live t.v. then ... just recorde highlights on I.T.V. it was a friendly tournament in the U.S.A. with Brazil, Italy, England and an Unofficial Team America side with ex internationals playing in the N.A.S.L. representing the U.S.A. What was frustrating was this; yes it was a good win against the Italians, yet in approximately six months later on in a World Cup Qualifier (In Rome) we were well beaten by them ... 2-0 if I remember rightly.

      The U.S. team had a "ringer" from each of the other countries: From the New York Cosmos, Pele and Giorgio Chinaglia -- the man who made the NASL big, and the man whose greed ended up killing it, setting U.S. soccer back a generation. And from the San Antonio Thunder, Bobby Moore. Having those guys on Team USA didn't do much good.

    • @UncleMikeNJ
      @UncleMikeNJ 8 років тому

      Your fact is wrong. The vast majority of the English-speaking world -- America, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and the English-speakers of India -- call it "soccer." The Italians call it "calcio," which doesn't translate into "foot" or "ball" in any way.
      Second of all, if England didn't lose the right to tell America what to call it with the Treaty of Paris in 1783, or the Treaty of Ghent in 1814, they sure lost it with the Hand of Clod in 2010. Right now, America plays the sport better than England does... and we are lousy at it, mainly because Jurgen Klinsmann is a moron.

      UncleMikeNJ, I read your last comment some days back and I was going to reply straight away with a long qualified response ... and then I thought 'Oh Don't Bother' in these passing days your ignorance has eaten into my International Football Stance, therefore I have react to you floored comment, I will try to be succinct; You talk of 'the English speaking World' Right I will give you The Facts on the Country's you mentioned and more. Lets look at North Americat , the USA = your national footballing body is called U.S.Soccer and Canada has a similer name as well ... However your regional/continental Footballing Governing body is called CONCACAF ... Lets see what that stands for; the Confederation Of North, Central American and Caribbean Association FOOTBALL ... that's FACTUAL. Lets look at Australia National Footballing Body its called FOOTBALL Federation Australia, and New Zealand's National footballing body is called New Zealand Football ... and there regional/continental Footballing Body is called Asian FOOTBALL Confederation ... that's FACTUAL. Lets look at the South African and the name of there national Footballing Body, its called the South African FOOTBALL Association and there regional/continental footballing body is called C.A.F. meaning the Confederation of African FOOTBALL, that's FACTUAL. What about England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland ... they all have 'FOOTBALL Association' as our national governing body ... and our regional/continental football governing body is called U.E.F.A. = meaning the United European FOOTBALL Associations ... You mentioned Italy ... there National FOOTBALL governing body is called Italian FOOTBALL Federation, they come under U.E.F.A. too ... that's FACTUAL ... Our World FOOTBALL Governing body is called F.I.F.A. Lets see what it stands for .. the Federation of International FOOTBALL Associations ... that's FACTUAL.
      You talk of treaties in the historical past, those leaders of England were just the typical English Upper Class Snobs who used that Outdated word of 'soccer' as a shortening of Association FOOTBALL and raggah instead of Rugby .... the game that emerged from football, I assume you know that grid iron stemmed from Rugby
      The only 'Hand Of God' I can remember was the nineteen eighty six FIFA World Cup, and Maradonna handling the ball into England's Goal and getting away with it
      In regard to the U.S. Women's Football Team, you have been streets ahead for some 20 years .. thats FACTUAL.
      To end, The World Name, for the World Game ... is FOOTBALL ... FACT.

    A very experimental England line-up. Only Mick Channon and Trevor Brooking had over 10 caps. Poor Jimmy Rimmer never played for England again. The young inexperienced England team had Dave Clement (3 caps), Phil Neal (2), Phil Thompson (6), Tommy Doyle (4), Tony Towers (3) and Joe Royle (4 caps). Whilst Joe Corrigan, Ray Wilkins, Mick Mills and Gordon Hill all made their three lions debuts.

    In the mid 1970s, I watched a game that was advertised as the US national team against the Argentine national team, played at a place called the Metropolitan Oval, a dirt field in Queens, NY. I can't find a record of this game, so it was probably just two club teams.
    The Metropolitan Oval is still there, now with artificial turf.

    what I couldn't understand even to this day the squad of England players we had back then and some of the footy they played was second to none, and after I left England we still didn't make the 78' World Cup, for me Mike Channon was one of our best players unfortunate not to grace the big tournament with his ability.....

    • @gunternetzer9621
      @gunternetzer9621 3 роки тому

      Mike was a favourite of mine but I think he suffered for England after Southampton were relegated and he was playing second division football. Looking back on it dispassionately, the worst thing that happened to England really was winning the World Cup as it made people think England were better than they were and any progress in skill in the league stopped and power and pace took over. The so called 'flair' generation of the '70s - Bowles, Hudson, Marsh, Worthington etc, weren't really up to it at the highest international level and they weren't as professional off the pitch as their European counterparts - too much birding/boozing/betting. Ramsay knew this and Revie realised it shortly after he was made manager and secretly confided it to people at the time as we now know. His fault was not finding a settled team and keeping it and Ramsay was too negative. Better management would have got more from the players as Joe Mercer showed in his short time in charge. Ramsay should have been sacked in 1972 after the debacle of the European Championship and Ron Greenwood installed then - the future would have been much brighter. And no, I don't think Brian Clough was the answer.

      @@gunternetzer9621 You make some good points - especially the booze culture of the English players in the 1970s. However, don't agree that winning the World Cup made people think England were better than they were. From 66 to 70, we were, unquestionably, one of the greatest sides in the World. It's true that afterwards we declIned and you're rIght that Revie's mistake was not finding a settled side - but he was also very unlucky that two of his main players (Colin Bell and Gerry Francis sustained long term injuries, in 1975 and 1976). Also only one team qualified from the group stages - and again England unlucky to be with Poland (Olympic champions, and who would ultimately finished third in 1974 World Cup), and then Italy for 1978.

    • @paullinford4510
      @paullinford4510 Рік тому +2

      @@Inglese001 Some good points there. Yes Revie was very unlucky with injuries (I would add Kevin Beattie to your list) and that undoubtedly made it harder to find a settled side. Southampton being relegated certainly didn't help as Channon was a key member of the team up until that point. I don't think Worthington or Bowles were ever truly international class, but Hudson was a world-class talent and should have been nurtured by Ramsay from an early stage.
