I've had mine about four months and love it. I'm an event photographer and have never used it for video but have found that after about a thousand frames in any one session, I don't get the warning light but it does start to freeze up and becomes useless until I shut it down and let it rest for 15 or 20 minutes. Not great when it happens, for instance, at the end of a wedding reception as the couple start to make their grand exit.
You shoot H+? I’ve had a few freeze in H+ when bursting, but a restart always solves that. Have you tried that? I can’t imagine the stress to have the camera freeze during a wedding
@@persvanstrom No, sir. At weddings I shoot single frame only. I've tried all the standard quick reboots including cycling the on/off switch, popping the battery, replacing the battery even though the 'current' battery has a fairly full charge and even popping the lens. Nothing works except letting it sit for a while and, I assume, cool off.
I managed to overheat mine by just waking up the back of the screen to check AF. When I shoot events, which is about 3-5000 photos in a few hours, I never use screen, just viewfinder and never have overheats. Not sure it helps, but that screen can generate a lot of heat is my experience.
In a stationary setting (studio) a slow speed (quiet) fan blowing on it also give you no time limit. I accidentally forgot it on overnite and in the morning I was surprised it was still on! Nice video, thumbs up 👍

I wished you had spoken a bit about the cons of using this method to avoid overheating. One thing I can think of is you can’t check or monitor autofocus as it won’t show the autofocus face detection or eye detection indicators in Atomos. I would like to know what other cons like that are a part of this strategy if one were to use it like this to avoid overheating in 4k60.
yeah, not using the camera screen can be a problem. I even speak about this in an upcoming video, where I was worried about AF, so kept turning on screen to check and ended up with an overheat. On the otherhand, turning on peaking on my Ninja and I can always tell if I have focus on the right place. I'm just so use to checking camera screen I sometimes forget to use the external monitor. As to speaking about pros and cons, I will try to do that more in future videos and I did so in my just recent posted video. Hope you liked that part better :)
Very dramatic video. Good choices of music to support that drama. When you were counting down the solutions on your fingers, I wanted to see graphics on the screen listing them. To summarize: use dummy battery, remove both memory cards, turn off screen, and fold out screen. Your last two solutions are problematic however. With the Ninja V attached, you can use the R6 screen to change F and ISO in response to external conditions. But I saw that you were presenting the screen on the Ninja, and using the wheel to change camera settings, which is not the F and ISO, so this is confusing (at lest to me). I have the R6ii and the Ninja V. Even at 4K-24P I'm lucky to get 9 minutes before the ninja shuts down.
@@persvanstrom god yes! I'm trying to get my Ninja V to work with it. At the most I've recorded 9 plus minutes before the Ninja says there's a problem with the connection, and shuts down. Any input would be MUCH appreciated.
I’m using an atomos cable that set me back $75. The ninja v is going to a 2TB Atom SSD. M with you, the bottleneck is the hdmi D connector on the camera.
Nicely done, man! Thanks for the video :D Just a suggestion - your video made me wanna check out the items you were using. You should add them as affiliate links in the description so you can make some extra side money!

I will start making a video about that asap. I prefer CLOG3 and I got a video about how to expose for that. When it comes to AF vs Manual, what AF etc, I think the standard settings get's you really far. Did you have anything specific or specific scenario in mind?
Liked and subscribed. I have a Canon R6Mk1 and I'm glad to see that it's viable for video. It sometimes feels like 99% of videos about Canon R videography focus on the R5/R5c/R6Mk2.
Awesome, thank you! I think the R6m1 will go down as one of the best cameras, like R, that still is viable. Yes, it can overheat, but it wasn't intended to shoot continuous for over 30min as it has a hard stop. I love my R6 and took over 100.000 photos last year, so it's a workhorse. Even for video :) Got any specific topic or problem you would ike me to cover in a future video?
@@persvanstrom I’m working my way through your playlist, so my suggestions may be topics you’ve already covered. - what recording formats can the ninja 5 do on the R6? Are those codecs easier to edit/grade than the .mp4/IPB standard from internal recording? - for UHD/24-25fps, what recording media (cards for internal/ssd for external) do you recommend? - if you do not set an accurate white balance, how much latitude do you have when your shooting 4:2:2 20 bit or externally recording.
nice test! I have to say though, i did everything you said, and weirdly it's even worst... the camera stops even quicker than with a battery , both cards in, etc... I'll search for other streaming solutions, and resell every accessories i bought Thanks for your effort, cheers man
@@persvanstrom yep 1.8.4 i can have 35min with a battery and 2 memory cards, just the creen flipped. And with the dully battery and card slot empty, and screen flipped, it's a little less than 25min Oo
Now.... what about using a Battery Grip and switching maybe from The Live View to the EVF? Leaving the Live view Screen off maybe during an Interview video recording?
Super interesting. I almost need to get a battery grip to test this (don't own one as I mostly go AC or V-mount) @CanonEurope care to lend us a battery grip for this? 😅
@@persvanstrom I'm almost done saving for my R6... by the way I heard alot about the Codec H.265.... any update regarding this? Or which best suggestion around it? As this Camera will be my main rig for Video I don't do alot of 60pfs so I don't think overheat will be a pblm for me
I had no problem on either PC or Mac with H.265. I have more problems with Prores tbh, mostly as the files are HUGE! It's more a matter what NLE you will be using and your plattform (Mac or PC). The camera does what the camera does, so to speak. What will you be using for operating system and NLE?
I remember reading 2 years ago people complaining their PC couldn't even display the Video thumbnail... some couldn't import the Footage nor even play log footage using common players like VLC.. etc
A cheap Amazon battery from Fotga geni.us/uxNElU (affiliate link if you want to help my channel) or the AtomX Battery Eliminator (but out of stuck since ages)
Canon knew these were overheating during the development stages. Back to the Product/Service Management stage! I'm a fan of Canon, but this is unacceptable. #Recall
I use Atomos Ninja V, it's almost industry "standard" for creators and independent filmers when it comes to recorders. I has removable SSD's, making it easy to record longer sessions. I bought mine used for 400$ with SSD, dock and cables, so can make a bargin on them. Atomos also has Atomos Cloud Connect, where you can push proxies directly to cloud for faster edit or customer collaboration.
Great question. I see a video coming 😊 but to answer. Yes, ProRes helps, but custom white balance and proper exposure is key. That and DaVinci and a great mentor @filmpro
@@persvanstrom anything! From short movies, commercials, music videos. Recently, even weddings, and I was going nuts because I couldn't film for more than 1h with short clips. Maybe the buffer writing being stressed is another issue if recording internally.
Oh, cool, you are killing. Yeah, the buffer issue might be it, but I keep getting overheats (even with my 5h+ setup) if I turn on the camera lcd. So I think it's a combination of everything and it's just the combo of everything that can push it far into hours mark...
I got 2xC70 for video, never regretted it and never looked back tbh. I'm also on the waiting list for the R5M2 (yup it's coming). I wish I got my hands on a R6m2 just for a week to do a few videos, but still waiting on Canon to get back to me on that one.
When Screen goes off after 1min and i click any button or zoom the lens, the screen goes on again and i notice a freezing frame in my NinjaV+. Do you experience the same problem?
Really great video, this is probably my 5th studying it to understand what you did lol! I'm curious though ..before I didn't know how to remove the R6 display info. from my ninja V while recording with the R6 screen turned off but once i figured that out, i was good to go !
Any chance you could share the full name of the external recorder that you used? So only one SD card, screen folded out and darkened after a minute if I am correct? And attaching an external recorder? Thanks for the content! Helpful
I noticed that you lowered the iso to 400 and changed the aperture to F4.0 on the final test that worked out. Did that have something to do with it? was there a reason you did that?
Great video! I have the r6 and external monitor (not ninja). Will it help to use a dummy battery, turn off the camera screen, use one card and add ulanZi fan to shoot in 4k? Will it work? My goal is 2 hours, with pressing record every 30m.
Nice editing, lighting, and music. How did you get past the 30 minute internal recording limit when not using an external recorder? It seems like the overheating is mostly caused by the processing of writing all that data to the memory cards.
I am a little confused, since in my R6 there is a limit to 29,59min when recording. How did you echieve 5 hours? I record to 29,59 and there is now overheating but record stop because of the limit reached.
Sorry if I confused you, that was not my intention :) The hard limit of 30min with internal recording is not possible to bypass. I got 5h as I recorded externally onto the Ninja V. The 30min internal limit is an old tax problem that is gone on newer models. I hope this makes it more clear, otherwise just ask away and I will try my best to help you.

Good stuff! Thank you. Question: for the tests with the ninjaV, did you remove the “stand by lower resolution” setting from the R6? Autofocus was on? Did you try the 5 hour setup with autofocus and a moving subject, or interview? Thank you!
No, stationary test, I filmed that phone clock for 5h. Not the most fun 5h 😂 but I’m intrigued by your smart questions and would like to test it. Have you tested?
Hey man! Great video. Do you think newer firmwares have since solved these issues? Also if recording on 4k 60fps (no log), is overheating still a major issue?
I appreciate all your diligence but if we have to do all that just to get the camera to not overheat it doesn't seem worth it. I've been eyeballing the s5ii and sadly I might be saying good bye to canon 😞
I get your feeling, but it's not that bad when you summarize it. I often shoot interviews for a few hours. Then I still need an external power source, my choice V-mount. Something you would need on any camera. When doing video work an external monitor (or recorder) is often very handy due to all the extra information it can give you. Memory cards or not, are more or less a choice, but with a 1tb SSD recording I would pref over SD cards anyhow. With the external monitor, no need to use the camera monitor and we are all set :)
@@persvanstrom I shoot mostly weddings so unless it's a Catholic ceremony most of them are only about 15 minutes so I should be ok. Buts it's pretty hot in Texas in the summer so I avoid 4k during those months
I can only imagine how hot it can be. I noticed on a recent shoot, where I shot interviews for 11h straight (yup long day). Even if I had everything set up as I described my R6 overheated a few times. I realised it was when I was worried about focus and I kept turning on the camera screen. Not sure that info will help, but I would avoid using the back screen as much as possible. I think you could get another 10min from that. Then 30min in 4K is still the limit as that is when recording stops, but I don't see why it shouldn't manage that.
Given the results of this video, it would be interesting to see exactly what rig you would build for hand held shooting. Maybe some links to the rig’s gear as well! @@persvanstrom that is exciting! I look forward to the new videos. Honestly, at this point, I need to really practice more with my new R6. I aspire to have a small but professional production company like yours. It’s something my wife and I are hoping to do in the near future. I hope to learn more from you.
The only thing I would do differently if I started today was just that - ABS - Always be Shooting. No, no FB group, I'm super small still, but help spread the word and who knows 😇 but I do have a video in the making (next up) that's titled "Canon R6 for video". Stay tuned for that :) and I love the idea of working with your wife. I wish I could do that...it would be my dream.
I’m a photographer that takes photos of dance events and can sometimes take 20,000+ shots in 13 hours. Do you think doing this same thing will prevent mine from over heating?
A really cheap solution would be using 'semiconductor cooling systems' , they use peltier effect to cool the camera's back .... and can be found on aliexpress for 30-40 Dollars... I used it with my A6700 and I was able to record video over 1hour in 4k120 (in temp =30+ C !!!) and it never overheated in 4k60 on warmer days. these cooling systems are really good and dont take up too much space, I hope more people find out about these cooling systems, they are silimar to the new Ulanzi cooling fans but they are 100X times better because they work on cooling rather than just heat dissipation . They only need a small powerbank as they are externally powered)
The purpose of the video was to maximize recording times, not to make a video that is real scenario. Tbh I could put it on a gimbal with a Vmount and get the same result, but a 5h gimbal shoot would def. Be an oversight 😎😅 I do than you for your feedback 👍🙏
Basically yeah, but I don’t like to recommend any new purchases. Do you need more than 30min? I had my R6 with this setup overheating by turning (waking up) on camera monitor while filming. Nothing is bulletproof unfortunately

Wow this is crazy! Can this be done with an R8 as well? also, I can't really afford an atmos 5 in my build, but I can probably also do this with my phone using a recording wifi app right?
The Canon EOS R8 has a maximum video recording time of 2 hours for it's typical long recording format (no-one records 2h in 120fps). That makes the R8 a different camera than R6 that has 30min as a hard limit built into the camera. From an heat management the R8 is better from start so anything around 1h mark is just hit record and sort it internally. I wouldn't recommend sending anything but hd over wifi and pref not that either. You own an R8?
After 30 years in this business, you shouldn't need to buy another expensive recording device to use what the camera itself claims to offer. I think it's time for a class action law suit? Is there one? They have thme for lying auto makers all day long etc. Been using all canon pro gear for these past 30 years. I even have the atomos accessories. But when I want to run lite, fast and just use a Ronin RS3 hand held. The camera should simply record. At the very least for more than 20-30 min and that's not even contestant recording. I'm over it. Canon you owe me for 2 Canon EOS R6's. I Got all your new EF glass NOT CHEAP. And it's all worthless for video that you sold us on!
You're aware that now car manufacturers force a subscription on you to retain (remote) mobile device functionality? Its not a new thing.. I'm not saying I agree nor support their model.
Not sure I understand or follow. If you need a flash you need to buy a flash, as that is an accessory that is optional. External recording isn't something that is needed, but that is an accessory that many video users prefer. It's an optional accessory, not something that is required to use the camera. The 30min recording limit is not a Canon issue, it's an old EU tax rule that divided video / broadcast from photo camera, but that's removed. That's also why new cameras comes without 30min limit
I was not actually. Wow, I would never buy anything like that. I just researched it. Not sure that will stick. Especially in this economy. The greed is catching up to people. I'm sure there are some that can get around it (love those guys). I don't do car payments or debt if possible. That's just me. I also don't ever buy a new car off the lot. It's the biggest waste of money many know of. One of the wealthiest men I know has been driving the same old, but nicely kept beamer for like 15 years now. He bought it used for 17k. I drove past his restaurant the other day and saw the car outside. He's still driving it. He's a page right out of The Millionaire Next Door. @@schimor
@@VertaSkull The overheating I do agree on, but tbh, I never get overheats sub 20min and as the camera is only rated for 29.59, I don't really see the problem. But I do know others get overheats all the time, so yes. If the camera isn't drivable, it's faulty :D B

There is a huge difference between 1.6 and 1.8, but still not enough without external recording and all the other fixes I added. @@DatHirschi I managed to overheat my Ninja after 22min in an interview session after doing this video. Was very surprised, but when I went over it afterwards I realized I was worried about keeping focus, so I kept poking the screen, waking it up. I think that made a huge difference, so maybe try to keep monitor off as much as possible?
Sorry. It seems that it is not the combination of the individual recipes that made it. This would be mysterious. It appears to be the fact that you removed the second sd card in the last test. So it would probably be the internal coding to H265 that generates heat.
I tried with both cards and only one, but it was only with all the combinations I managed to get 5h. If you have other data I would love to hear it, always great if we creators can help each other 😉
If your record on an external device (i.e Atomos Ninja V) in clean HDMI, it disables internal recording, no matter if you have 1, 2 or none SD cards in. So no internal (H265) coding is performed, explaining IMO why it does not heat.@@persvanstrom
that is correct, last one was only external. Now with new firmware, I might make another, follow-up video if people would be interested. Just to ensure we got all facts and scenarios covered. One thing I didn't test was two different memory cards V60 vs V90, to check if that makes a difference.
TBH, yes it sounds sketchy, but it worked for me. Try one at a time and see if you get a different outcome? Not here to sketch anyone, just trying to help out the community.
@@wah0wah I answered in a different video but ran into several overheats with Ninja, due to me touching monitor on the R6 checking focus. So my own feeling is that the screen covering the back is a big reason for overheats. No matter, Ninja is required for 30+ min recording as the R6 is locked for longer recordings unfortunately.
if we do not fix it with overheating, we will do not invest in canon again...yep ............................. no, it is overheating becasue CANON EF aadapter for RF with lense from EF... second wrong codecs, and.... something we do not know
You shot in CanonLog3 for the final video (Your 5+ hours of recording). I watched this video, made the decision to get the Canon R6, the Ninja V, dummy battery...same setup right. CanonLog3 same result i.e. As long as I wanted AND as long as the display was off. Shooting in standard...30min. This camera is junk. You changed the parameters (settings) of the test on purpose and didn't mention it. I regret the purchase. But, I did learn a valuable lesson...don't listen to salesman on UA-cam. It's just a commercial. Some guys are just untrustworthy. But, don't take it personally, Same goes for guitar pedals, guitars, plates, dishes, rain coats, jackets, bags, shoes, computers, hard drives, games, fans, humidifiers, curtains, tires, cars, phones, trackpads, external hard drives, etc. I could go on forever. But, maybe you'll get a sponsor soon...you know...the goal
I pay my own gear, so not sure about the commercial reference, but if you only get 30min, then you are still recording internally. The camera is locked to 30min, no matter what. Only way to bypass 30min hard recording limit, that isn't related to overheat, but just a hard block on most cameras, then you need to record externally. My problem with external recording and the reason for the video was that even if I recorded externally, I still got overheats. That should be gone with my suggested solution. If you hit record on the camera, it will be internal + external. If you hit record on Ninja, it will be only external and no 30min hard limit. Check this and if still not working, poke me and we can sort it together as I'm not hear to sell shit, I'm here, trying my best to share my experiences learned by countless of hundred of hours shooting, with the hope that it will help someone else.

@@persvanstrom OK. Let's say I do not want to shoot in CLog3. I want to point and shoot, record to the Ninja V in 4k60fps. The camera is set the same. Not Clog3 but a standard profile in camera. Dummy battery, screen open. I get sometimes 30min sometimes less. But, when I change to Clog3 in camera, rec709 monitoring, I get 5+ hours. That is all I am saying. I can never duplicate the 5 hrs in a standard camera profile, native monitoring. Eco off. Maybe, their is a setting i'm missing that you have set that's probably simple, but the frustration is across the board on this camera. For me, even with the external monitoring, it is not worth it. I don't blame you for my purchase, and I really do appreciate the videos (doesn't seem like it I know) but when I've tried for the last 8 months to duplicate your results, I can not. So, I bought the camera and the external monitor and external battery and all the external rig to make this a point and shoot camera without having to use clog3, I should be able to and get the 5+hrs. My point is, without CLOG3...you will not get 5+hrs. That is the whole point. Nothing else. I know you are in CLOG3. Some people don't like to use CLog anything, just a standard profile.
I appreciate the friendly and nice feedback. I'm just a beginner still searching for my place on UA-cam, so always nice to know and hear what amazing people like you, think of the content I make.
This camera is a toy. For 2100 USD basic version but I spent 3500 USD with basic cards, batteries, grip, and basic lens...waiting for Canon's feedback, if it will be negative....well, I will not invest in canon never, ever, again...THIS CAMERA IS NOT FOR 4K filming....
I feel you, even if I don't agree :) I think expectations are important and an R6 or R5 is a hybrid mirrorless camera and with that, expectations should be it is a photography masterpiece that also can film. It's not a cinema camera that can film for a full day, multiple codecs and no problems. For 2100 USD I personally believe it's a steal. With that said, I'm not saying you are wrong, just that different people will have different perspectives, and you are 100% right from your perspective as I am from mine. Most negative comments I read about the R6 and equal cameras are the lack of long use of 4K recording in 60fps. With a legal stop of 29min, we should not expect anything but burst video video usages imho. If the need is mostly video I would recommend a cinema camera or even two cameras. Still I feel with anyone dissapointed and I think it's entitled, but also hard. I don't expect my regular car to be able to do heavy off-road, but I would be dissapointed if I can't park it on grass. If that makes sense.

Any guidance on what the best settings are for auto focus for video?
I will start making a video about that asap. I prefer CLOG3 and I got a video about how to expose for that. When it comes to AF vs Manual, what AF etc, I think the standard settings get's you really far. Did you have anything specific or specific scenario in mind?
@@persvanstrom for wedding and event scenarios.
It’s a regular Amazon dummy. Alvin Cables I think
8:37 What do you recommend to do the recording externally? Can we simply use our iphones? I wasn't familiar with the product you used.

I didn’t Just pressed record again. Sorry if that wasn’t clear and thx for the nice comment 🙏❤️ Only way to truly go 30min+ is external recording

Did you tried recording in 4k crop mode with speed booster 0,70x ?
I always use EF/RF adapter, so no.

Intresting, thx for sharing
A giant oversight of this video is thinking most videographers would have an r6 on a tripod, instead of a gimbal
The purpose of the video was to maximize recording times, not to make a video that is real scenario. Tbh I could put it on a gimbal with a Vmount and get the same result, but a 5h gimbal shoot would def. Be an oversight 😎😅 I do than you for your feedback 👍🙏

@@persvanstrom No I don‘t own an R8, but am really considering buying one! Do you think its worth buying an r8 over an r6?
@@schimor

@@persvanstrom No, You changed it from standard to CLog3 in your video (watch it if you don't believe sand run the test again) I have and got your 5 hrs. I know how to record externally. Plus, I said some youtubers. If that offends you, that's your problem. Your results of 5hr+ is a result of external recording and putting the R6 in CLog3. That's it. You stand by what you said, that's fine, but you are either mislead, made a mistake, or ill informed. I'd like to believe you made a mistake but, you double down and pimp the same video again. Maybe you should watch it again.
They are all shot in CLOG3, it's only the Ninja V that show the output on the dispaly. The ISO800 on the internal recording might tell you that. I'm not sure why you are so angry and unfriendly but I'm not your enemy. I will say it again, if you feel you need help, just let me know.
