    I've only had the R8 for a while, so far it hasn't overheated, but I record short videos, anyway as the manual said that the back of the sensor (and the screen) could burn... @@Josh_Sattin not all usb-c (or USB-a) provide the same electrical power. Some usb ports can transfer high-speed data, but are limited in the power supply offered, so probably this is the case: the usb connexion was sufficient for video transfer and control, but had not enough power. For instance on a new MacBook Pro the different usb-c thunderbolt connexions provide power and high-speed data transfers, but I run into problems when connecting devices that require power on external usb ports, for instance on the studio display, as they have low power supply.

I assume the camera was idle - if so, how did you get around the 30min idle timeout the camera has? I've been trying to get my R8 to just stay on past 30mins when idle since I don't need it to record while livestreaming and so far NOTHING has worked (all power settings are disabled, I have a dummy powered battery AND USB-C AC adapter plugged into the camera as well).

    Babyback Maniac put a small portable fan in front of the camera blowing the air to the lens and battery compartment. SD card I believe is warmer than the battery. I have just used Ecamm with HDMI out and inside the Studio no overheating problems. I do notice that Canon does turn off the lcd screen with no activity which doesn't bother me. I've had my R8 for 5 days. The image quality is gorgeous but mine overheats all the time recording video at 4k/60, in doors in an air-conditioned studio, using the 24-105 F4.0 lens. The camera is on a tripod and out of the sunlight.
      I record off the HDMI port too so I'm not actually recording to the internal card. I can get about 20-25m before the temperature icon starts blinking.
      Super frustrating and even thought I love the focusing and image quality, I'm probably going to return it. I record guitar-instructional videos and use a mic so I'm not sure I can use a cooling fan because my mic would pick it up...
      I was previously using the canon M50 and never once had any type of temperature issues.
      Maybe it's time to see what Nikon and Sony are up to? (I know sacrilegious in this forum but i'm pretty disgusted that canon would release this camera with this type of issue)

    Hi have you tested in crop mode and see will that help with overheating, since that one is not supersampled so should be less taxing on the processor and that means less heat. Great video Josh - Thanks! Just a thought... if you purchased the aftermarket (and very inexpensive) battery grip for the R8 (same as the one for RP - yes it fits), you would: A/ Double the battery runtime and B/ potentially draw away some of the heat from the batteries being further away from inside the camera sensor/body? I realise it then makes the camera less compact - but may well be worth it.

I am invested in both the Canon and Sony ecosystem just like you so lenses are not a problem. It was between the R8, A7C and the FX30. I tested both the A7C and the FX30 and they both do fine with continuous recording at 4k 24p with one battery and no overheating. In fact the A7C records for 3 hours before the battery runs out. This test of yours completely rules out the R8 for me. Maybe I will add the R7 to the list along with the A7C and the FX30. I noticed when removing a battery after some use that it was warm. It seems to me that the battery can be a significant source of heat as it discharges . . . and your USB-C powered camera test results suggest the same. Testing with a dummy battery would be instructive (and I might do so), as would testing when powering the R8 with a battery grip, as the batteries in that case would not be in the body of the camera per se.

    I've been doing my research as best I could on the R8, R6, R6mII, and R5 as I'll finally be taking the leap to mirrorless after shooting on a DSLR for 11 years now.
    Price is a factor, as the R8 is the cheapest, but the other mirrorless cameras aren't priced too badly on the used market either.
    I'm still a photographer at heart, but I'm getting into videography as well, so if I did plan on a long recording session, would I be able to record externally with something like a Ninja V and not have to worry about overheating whatsoever?

    • @Josh_Sattin
      @Josh_Sattin  Рік тому

      Usually using a Ninja V and recording externally will eliminate the overheating in these Canon cameras, but I haven't tested it. Also keep in mind that if you don't have the H.265 codec in your Ninja then you will be recording in Prores and those files are significantly larger.

    I received my r8 last week, and the good news is that the camera does not heat up even without doing anything. I remember that the r6/r5 when they came out was heating up without recording when we set to 4k60…so when recording we had less time left before overheating. With the r8 I was able to do several hours of 4k60 filming sequences of 1-2mn each time, but just 20-25mn in continuous recording (the camera overheats quickly when it is still in our hands).
    So For my use (run and gun, wedding, low budget music video etc) I am not afraid to use 4k60 professionally, because I never film long sequences in 60fps…

    I had the problem on the R10 that when it started to overheat, aparently it stopped recording, however the video I was recording didn´t save, does this have the same problem? Like if the camera turns off or if it stops recording because of overheatting will the video save?

    Most weddings, communions, parties are on location outdoors in the summer, in the middle of the heat of the day.
    You have no other choice this is the important moment that this camera must work without any problems!
    Then indoor shots where the sun shines on the camera are not a real benchmark!
    the only good solution is a fan that blows away the hot air!
    How can firmware solve a heat problem?
    It can only ensure that the protection against overheating is off.
    If the printed circuit board gets too hot in the camera, it must be cooled down with a fan, just like in a computer (see how many fans there are on a modern graphics card).
    In the other case, it will switch itself off if a too high temperature has been exceeded.
    If you now disable this protection or adjust the value via a software update instead of 80 degrees to 120 degrees, it will continue to work longer, but at what price?
    Therefore, using an external battery, external memory, opening all covers and screen is a small solution against a construction error!

    Lot of community testing out there these R8 cameras have really really wonky software hard coded to detect change in temp NOT the actual temp. That said take a cold camera from inside AC to outdoors and you cant even shoot 5 mins 4k60 BUT leave it outside for 15 mins and you can shoot over 30 every time. Canon pulled yet another scummy move on the cameras to intentionally cripple them, as always. This can be repeated every single time.

  • @shieldaigbencher
    @shieldaigbencher 8 місяців тому +1

    This is rubbish. The R8 bases it's overheating warnings on a temperature difference. So if you put in a fridge and then take it out it will show overheating as soon as you take it out and start filming. Equally if you take it out an ice cold aircon hotel to a hot environment it will show overheating. just let it acclimatise for a few minutes and it will be fine. It's not an overheating problem, it is a teperature difference problem. Also, the new firmware upgrade solves this anyway.

    I think overheating tests are pretty ridiculous. How many people will watch a 30 minute clip shot in 60fps? I've seen tests where cameras could shoot an hour/two hour long clip. But, why? When would you ever need to shoot for a straight hour? Or longer?
