I so enjoyed this podcast! I've been a runner for 20 years. As I approach 60 yrs. I been having issues with osteoarthritis in the knees the past few years. This past year running has taken a back seat. Strength training and zone 2 training has been my main focus. I've noticed a huge difference in just a years time.

This is brilliant. Love the simple philosophy that is broken down, using our body to live our potential in connection with ourselves and nature, and that poem really hit home. Thanks both Chris and Rich.

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you, for going over zone 2 training in depth! I have been doing the 80/20 rule with my runs since March & I love it! For the first time ever I am running injury free & my races are slowly getting faster! It is such a mental game for me. Thank you for diving into the reasons why the zone 2 training & slow "easy days" are so important!

Rich, one of the podcasts episodes that I enjoyed even a bit more than the others. Very appealing to me and a great essay from Chris about "Meaning". Please do publish it somewhere on your page of RRP 377 or over here so I can read it again in the future or point someone to it when I'm having difficulty trying to explain what Ultra endurance / triathlon /athleticism means to me and why I'm so passionate about it. Thanks for a great one!

Absolutely agree with Chris on this stuff. I MUST get outside and push myself on a regular basis: No gym, or indoor-trainer can replace getting out on the open road, or mountain track, for me! I too believe that it's part of us! We are part of nature! Too many, sadly, feel separate from nature: It's somewhere they 'go'. Until more realise that we, as a species, are part of everything; the world/ environment/ peoples' health, will continue to decline.... Great Podcast, Rich. Your book 'Finding Ultra' which I first read several years back, put me on the road to a plant-based lifestyle. After a few 'false starts' I'm finally there and feel awesome! Thanks :-)

Something as counter-intuitive as "going slower to get faster" needs a very clear explanation for how it actually works physiologically to convince most people.
I still can't get definitive answers regarding how to maximize the size of the heart and stroke volume, which are the most powerful aerobic adaptations.
What heart rate zone and duration of workout makes the heart the largest and able to pump the most blood?
60-70% max HR,, 70-80% or Threshold? And for how long?

I really enjoy your talks Mr. Roll, you always have very insightful questions and excellent guests!
With regard to this talk, I am trying to get more clarification on the zone 2 calibration (as it is the first time I have heard about it):
So its a 5 mile repeat run with 1 minute rest in between each mile at 90-95% effort. Record HR and Pace during each rest and then average them up at the end. Now at this point when we get the average of HR (and pace, as a point of reference for later runs), how do we determine the zones and gray areas based on these averages? Say I had a 195 HR average for each mile? Chris Hauth mentioned something about 30 to 40 beats below threshold (average) for zone 2? Is there a way to estimate the lower portion (as well as the upper and lower gray zones) of zone 2?

Hey guys I am not a long endurance runner swimmer or cyclist but I love going running in nature or mountain biking in nature, there is something addictive, challenging, connecting with inner self and within, just love the feeling of being one with the trees the birds with the flower of life I suppose. I only run one hour lunchtime during the week and a couple of hours once at the weekend but it gives me the buzz. Mountain biking when you re going up that hill that you could not before, getting stung by horse flies, reaping your skin on brambles, sweat running in your eyes and stinging, I think this could be a part of endurance although I am nowhere at your levels guys. Anyway love your vids, I have been on a mainly raw plant based diet for 1.5 years, growing loads in the garden, check it out www.sens-en-eveil.fr go to vegetable garden. Keep cool thank you for your vids the more I watch the more I feel like going out there challenging the 5 senses within the elements. Love and light. Patricia from South West France.

He is talking about lower compared to what it normally is at your perceived effort level. Where your HR is not getting up to where it should be for your effort.
It is especially noticeable during HIIT, where you are busting your ass and you cannot reach your HR target (that you normally have no problem hitting) no matter what. I take a day or 2 off when that happens.
