Raptor HanselJolteon dude I don't know. 1. He jumps of the wall super early and reads the bounce perfectly to barely get it around the corner, if his teammate stayed on the wall it would have been a lost 50/50 most likely so really smart and good thinking to beat him. 2. This is what I was explaining to a couple of guys last night, using a strategy I call cycled rotation, while utilizing the zones you just mentioned. A lot of people seem blind to these ideas and I try to recreate my teammates with every random player I come across, since most seem oblivious to these strategies. I'm glad to finally see this laid out in detail good stuff.
I really like the way you split the field into zones. That is really helpful when getting into diamond ranks or higher. Thank you for that SunlessKhan. No one has ever conveyed rocket league the way you do and I really like because it shows the hidden side of rocket league which is sort of like a strategy game
He is not saying that you suck, but it is very normal to see platinum and gold players make these simple mistakes- everyone will pass through these ranks at one point, it is nothing to be embarrassed about. Even champs make such simple mistakes.
Hey man, just wanna say thanks. I've always been a casual rocket league player, like, after work and stuff just for fun. But i achieved gold 3 div4 and it was starting to piss me off that i couldnt be able to pass that. I watched your video yesterday and decided to put the concepts in practice today. I was at gold 3 div 2 and EASYLY arrived to platinum 1. I mean, i know that this dont represent shit for high ranks players, but i got surprise how the concepts in this video REALLY WORKS. I played about 10 or 11 games in a row and didnt lose a single one! At the beggining i was like "nah... That must be a coincidence". Turns out it wasnt. Anyway... Your video absolutely was a turning point in my game, thank you.
This should apply to everyone. Even if youre a higher rank like champion-grand. Im around that level and this still pointed out some stuff that i never really was fully aware of. Thanks for the video khan, very helpful ^-^
I think awareness should be number one, it kinda covers everything. While it may be vague, being aware of what your teammate is doing is probably the best bet. If he’s off fighting in the corner, you shouldn’t be in there with him - you should be anticipating an enemy clear or a possible pass. Great video, I hope this reaches a wide audience.
I see rocket league as just a “game” so I don’t try too hard but I still love to watch videos like this to where eventually my teammate and I can ace aerial passes and a bit more difficult ground shots.
Worth mentioning if you're following your teammate on the attack, if he loses the ball you're very vulnerable to a long shot from their defense to go sailing over your head, you have to be hyper aware of whether he still 'has' the ball or if he's 'lost' it - you have to anticipate when he's going to lose it and get your ass back to goal or interupt their counter to buy time quicksmart
I'm mid-diamond, and my mindset in regards to rotations is that - while myself, and other players around my skill level know some pretty advanced mechanics (dribbles, flicks, ceiling shots, hook shots, flip-resets, air-dribbles, Kuxir's, etc) if you properly rotate, you don't need to even utilize this Swiss-Army knife of mechanics. The two issues that I face are when it's my turn to rotate in, being unsure of myself as to how long I should stay in the play. I'm constantly asking myself "Do I stay in until my boost is depleted?", "Do I stay in until there's no play left?", "Do I just ball-chase for a set amount of time, then rotate out?" My other issues is with my team-mates rotations. I typically like to leave them enough space to pull off whatever play they're trying to achieve, while putting myself in a position to receive a pass, but more often than not, my team-mates rotate out to grab a full-boost, then rotate back in right on my ass, giving me the feeling of being rushed, then when my rushed play gets shot down, they typically score because my team-mate is too close to me, and together we're covering less of the field because of this. I hate to make this seem like it's my team-mates fault, as I'm equally responsible for the direction of the game as every other player in the game, but I honestly have no idea how to adapt to that kind of playstyle. The only solution I could think of is to play extremely passive, and play to them rather than with them. If that makes sense.
On a real note sunless, thank you so much for this video. Its so easy to understand but covers a lot of pretty depthful concepts, I actually watched this when I was about silver 2 or 3, and im a plat now just grinding out the mechanics to get myself higher. I can honestly say this video played a LEADING ROLE in my ability to get WINS and playing with my team, knowing when someone has a better hit or a play set up. I kinda feel like this took me from feeling like I was the backbone of my team by sweating, ballchasing, and trying to score awesome goals to actually BEING the backbone of my team from always being in a position to defend and counterattack, being there for passes or if I can tell my teammate has messed up. Now... to figure out how to not get scored on when I'm upfield from MY play, on my recovery, and get hit with the painful open net. Someday (; thank you sunless!
I'm being serious dude. The rocket league community has a fetish with high level players, and don't recognize accomplishments like getting out of gold enough. A majority of the player base is well below you now :)

Quality video my dude. Just saying, the reason I hit subscribe was because the timing and the music of the dab at 5:45. Not sure if it was intentional or not, but it was the reason :)
I dont agree to the example at 3:50 because when you push there and dont score you and your teammate are in the same area with none of you having boost. Easy goal for the opponents imo Still very nice video:)
You can do pretty much anything except high ariel's with 20-30 boost and could have easily hit the ball to a corner to buy time for him and his teammate to collect boost and reposition. So pushing there is the more correct choice here at higher level plays. (chances are lower level players will just hit it straight to the goal without doing anything like dribbles, flicks, fakes, etc.) Do not underestimate the 12 boost pads in the middles when u r not near a 100 boost pad
There are many different ways of positioning, this is just the stay safe and the basics of positioning. You can be risky at times and you can not rotate if you have a HUGE amount of pressure where the opponent has no boost. There is a lot of ways to be creative with positioning.
I 100 percent agree, pushing with no boost here is the wrong call. The opponent has full boost and a bouncing ball close to him and just has to get by you any way to be left with an empty net. If you fall back for boost you will be in a perfect shadowing position with full boost and it will take a great move on net to score. Challenging is a terrible idea, against even a decent opponent you will get a touch only half the time because of how many options they have, and could still get dunked for an easy goal anyways.
I’m new to rocket leauge, only been playing for a couple months. But I grew up playing hockey my whole life and positioning and spacing is a lot alike in rocket league and hockey, I’ve been trying to play that way sense bronze 1. Always thought I had an edge because of my positioning until about silver 1 or 2 when I realized a lot of other players play that way in the higher ranks. I’m now gold 1 and I owe a lot of it to positioning and spacing I learned playing hockey! Great video!
I’m glad you mentioned positioning, because like you said in the intro: I am definitely always in the wrong place at the wrong time… When my friend is about to set me up on on the other side of the field getting boost…
me my friend same way , he fix few issues but his old habit come back to start bumping me instead of waiting for past leaving the field open if something go wrong. there were times we could have beat are winning streak of 9.
To give some more advice here's what's it's like from a hockey point of view: If you deny your opponent opportunities then they are much less effective in what they're trying to do, contest them, make them work for their space and chances. Yes that's like the pressure he mentioned in the vid. Another one is always be in front of the play, you can't make any good plays if you're behind it. That is very crucial. Also follow through with your shot or ball touch if it won't result in you getting behind the play. That one is tougher to figure out but it pays off, you never know what will happen
You explain this so effortlessly a 7 year old understands you. Dad heard u b4. Beau watches u frequently. This explains exactly what is happening to us. Thank u
This speaks to me like not much else has about this game. I'm Plat 2, and lost count of the number of times I've been told I'm lucky when I beat someone. Especially in 1v1. No, I can't do all those fancy things. So I make up for it with being able to read what the other person is doing and block them, then counter once they've over-committed. But of course, since I'm not hitting crazy half-field aerials and jumping off walls, it's just luck to the people that have no concept of positioning. ;)
I have no technical skills and went from Gold I to Platinum II in 3v3 thanks to the rotation explained in episode 9. Many people are still blindly chasing the ball at this level. Air Dribbling looks nice but is very predictable. I always expect my opponent to lift the ball at the last moment and try to block that. Feels much easier to block than direct shots where you have no time to react.
Positioning is actually the first thing I got decent at in Rocket League. I didn't have the technical ability to keep up with my friends after just getting the game, so I learned how to to be in just the right spot for an easy clear.
Me and my friend got from silver 2 to gold 1 after watching this video in about 8 games. Guess how many games we have lost? ONE! The win-rate went from about 40% to 90%. Thanks a lot matey.
Best rocket league vid to date from anyone. Screw the fancy hits and freestyling, if everyone watched this there'd be less rage, better games and people would end up in their actual ranks (I would go down for sure, carried everywhere).
Am champ1 with 1300hrs in 2s and, i can say this is the best VIDEO TUTORIAL for rocket league on youtube. I was stuck in plat1,2 for 3,4 months, meanwhile i was improving my aidribbles, dribbles and other stuffs...Now i cant even do more than 3 touches in airdribble, but i can win 6 games in a row and beat GC with good rotation and understanding position
I've seen a lot of these explanations before, and tried to implement them, but your video is probably the best I've seen at putting it all together in a concise way. I'll be showing this to my 2's buddies for sure. Now if you could also make a video about 3v3 rotations, that'd be pretty great. 3v3 rotations can be trickier.
This is a fantastic video and does a great job on highlighting (for me in particular) an area of Rocket League I’ve been looking for some guidance for. Big thanks SunlessKhan & All Star IV! Looking forward to implementing this into my gameplay.
In my basketball playing days, most players wanted to showboat, be the hotshot who made the amazing play against their opponent. Many of them were better than me in 1v1, but I knew positioning, passing, and moving without the ball so well that they didn't stand a chance against me on team play. I think this concept translates to rocket league, too.
I like to think of rotating like a bowl of cereal. The cereal is all the skill you've learned and the milk is the rotating. Eating the milk and cereal is winning the games.
The damn reaper dab is so bad! Great video tho, I’m in that limbo going back and forth between diamond 1 and platinum 3, and this video may just be what I need to get into diamond permanently. Thanks a ton for the helpful and comedic video! Subbed

Case the Ace Maybe we should team up xD
I’m new to rocket leauge, only been playing for a couple months. But I grew up playing hockey my whole life and positioning and spacing is a lot alike in rocket league and hockey, I’ve been trying to play that way sense bronze 1. Always thought I had an edge because of my positioning until about silver 1 or 2 when I realized a lot of other players play that way in the higher ranks. I’m now gold 1 and I owe a lot of it to positioning and spacing I learned playing hockey! Great video!
3:19 2vs1. 3:59 ? hard fail. "what a save!"
5:43 that music sync with the reaper dabbing is on point XD
It would be nice if they add a map (like the one in fifa, pes), maybe that could help on positioning or even improving the game play
That would be a really nice option!
Haven't found a video that is as clear as this. It'll make it easier to explain to my friends why they suck at Rotating for sure!
@SunlessKhan
whats the name of the track @ 6:27 ?
Stylish indie electronic Bass on audiojungle
@@jonas7758 you are the goat
I’m glad you mentioned positioning, because like you said in the intro: I am definitely always in the wrong place at the wrong time… When my friend is about to set me up on on the other side of the field getting boost…
Me and my fella are pretty good at rotation, we dont even talk anymore we have ours roles fixed. but we lack mechanical skills :(
me my friend same way , he fix few issues but his old habit come back to start bumping me instead of waiting for past leaving the field open if something go wrong. there were times we could have beat are winning streak of 9.
To give some more advice here's what's it's like from a hockey point of view:
If you deny your opponent opportunities then they are much less effective in what they're trying to do, contest them, make them work for their space and chances.
I LITERALLY MADE THE SAME MOTION AS THE DUDE IN THE BEGINNING, SAME PROBS YO
You explain this so effortlessly a 7 year old understands you. Dad heard u b4. Beau watches u frequently. This explains exactly what is happening to us. Thank u
Plz show this to the 9 year old I just played with
This speaks to me like not much else has about this game. I'm Plat 2, and lost count of the number of times I've been told I'm lucky when I beat someone. Especially in 1v1.
No, I can't do all those fancy things. So I make up for it with being able to read what the other person is doing and block them, then counter once they've over-committed. But of course, since I'm not hitting crazy half-field aerials and jumping off walls, it's just luck to the people that have no concept of positioning. ;)
1:40 until the actual tutorial starts btw
I have no technical skills and went from Gold I to Platinum II in 3v3 thanks to the rotation explained in episode 9. Many people are still blindly chasing the ball at this level. Air Dribbling looks nice but is very predictable. I always expect my opponent to lift the ball at the last moment and try to block that. Feels much easier to block than direct shots where you have no time to react.
Plz notice me senpai
Great video Khan. All of these techniques sound so good to use but balancing the ball in free play sounds even more useful. Nothin personnel, kid 😎
Ik it's not intentional but since you got champ this feels much more like a talking down to lol
Its more informational than his earlier videos but with the same tone of voice
Haha well I lost it, gained it back, and lost it again about 3x since that video haha. Idk what I am but it's not champ ;)
+SunlessKhan LOL
I dont know how to get out of diamond 3.
im just stuck.
have you seen how many people play this game poorly? some people need talking down to
Positioning is actually the first thing I got decent at in Rocket League. I didn't have the technical ability to keep up with my friends after just getting the game, so I learned how to to be in just the right spot for an easy clear.
Playing smart can take you a long way
2024 anyone?
Me and my friend got from silver 2 to gold 1 after watching this video in about 8 games. Guess how many games we have lost? ONE! The win-rate went from about 40% to 90%.
Thanks a lot matey.
Just started watching a lot of tips on youtube, love your sarcasm in your vids. Fun to watch
Since watching this, gone up a whole league and a bit, GOOD STUFF
How do you only have 32k subs. You deserve atleast 320k damn man the world of rocket league needs to see your videos!!!!
Great video. I LOLd when you said “Jesus Christ” at the dabbing reaper
Best rocket league vid to date from anyone. Screw the fancy hits and freestyling, if everyone watched this there'd be less rage, better games and people would end up in their actual ranks (I would go down for sure, carried everywhere).
This should be MANDATORY for all 2s players to watch.
thanks for this one! my friend doesn't play well with others, so he prefers 2v2. most tutorials and tips are for 3s. :)
Great video! Even with is comedic sense you still are able to get the important stuff out.
I love this series I share to my friends as a passive aggressive way of saying git gud and it working like a charm😂
Great video, Keep these videos up, I'm loving them man.
0:30 yeah i love kickfliping in rocket league it looks soo cool man
Not sure if you tried this or not, but I loved those three music syncs at 5:40!
I really really really needed this video. I've been stuck in play 3 for what seems like a month
Remembering the sunless era. What a god.
This is a fantastic video and does a great job on highlighting (for me in particular) an area of Rocket League I’ve been looking for some guidance for. Big thanks SunlessKhan & All Star IV! Looking forward to implementing this into my gameplay.
Glad it was helpful!
Great vid! Very helpful and entertaining as well. You are super underrated, u should have millions of subs
Genius video editing and production.
Thx for the help, with these tips and tricks I will now become a Rocket League Champion!
Wow, this is immensely helpful! Gonna try to utilize these during recording tonight with my brother!
Isn't there a 3v3 rotation/strategy vid? Not much of a doubles guy but still worth a watch. Might come in handy later on
This vid got me from plat 2 to d1 div 4 in 2s
I like to think of rotating like a bowl of cereal. The cereal is all the skill you've learned and the milk is the rotating. Eating the milk and cereal is winning the games.
Those last few words hit me hard. I was literally flying around like a flappy bird while listening to the recap lol
Bro I’m just seeing this video 7 years later it’s crazy to think how much the game has changed
That was one of the best education videos I've watched for rocket league. Thank you so much for this
Thank you. You're content is always greatly appreciated.
Don't forget to follow Sunless Khan on Twitch!
The damn reaper dab is so bad! Great video tho, I’m in that limbo going back and forth between diamond 1 and platinum 3, and this video may just be what I need to get into diamond permanently. Thanks a ton for the helpful and comedic video! Subbed
