This is the most important skill in Rocket League. If you master this technique you can save any shot. My whole play style is based off shadowing. You explained everything perfectly SunlessKhan. I always try to explain it to people when they ask, but from now on I’m going to just show them this video because it recaps everything that needs to be said about shadowing.
Really good video Khan! I'm champ 3 and even I learned a bit - A few things I would like to add though: Shadowing in 2s with your teammates behind you can sometimes be a good decision, especially if they're just recovering. It's an excellent tool to slow down your challenge so that your teammate is ready to receive the ball if something goes wrong. If you do decide to challenge right away (as you suggest in this video) and you don't win, your opponents will have a lot of time to recover ball possession leaving your teammate in a 1v2 which is not ideal. If you instead shadow and challenge when you know that even if you lose your teammate will be in a position to get the ball, things will go better much more often.
You can also slow down the attack with shadow defense giving your teammate(s) the opportunity to take the challenge while you're ready to block the possible shot. If you're not the 3rd man that is. Much easier if you're in comms though. Trying that when solo queuing can be.... difficult 😅
This skill is simple to learn and fairly easy to apply yet so effective. Makes a huge difference in defense. Arguably one of the most important things to know.
Agreed. No one seems to have any patience when it comes to defending and go all out on that panic attack missing the ball completely and leaving the goal defenseless Mexijuan. Do you mean 'mean' rather than many?
i never knew this had a name , i have been doing it unconciusly ever since i entered gold ranks (in 1v1s) so far this is the best WYSARL i have ever seen and the skech was awesome props daddykhan 2020edit: lol people answering old comments is always amusing, proprs to khan for making something that its still relevant 2yrs later, sadly ive quitted RL... i salute you people still hanging there!
Frankly I think this was an excellent tutorial about a skill that is widely ignored at lower ranks, even in doubles where it is exceptionally helpful. Well done again Sunless!
thank you. i am currently diamond and i never really thought about looking into shadowing that much, i just sorta do it. but now i know exactly when and how
Samsie. Never realized I did it either. Too many times though the attacker gets a flick over you. From this video I learned why, and that’s because the gap between both players is too small. Great stuff Khan 😀
These are straight facts, I play soccer irl for my school and shadow defense (pressure, cover, balance) is essential. Applies almost exactly the same in RL. Get it down pat and within 50 hours, you can get up 1-3 tiers in your rank. Once again, Gr8 video Khan!
Grand champ and my shadow defence is great in 2s and 3s, but in 1v1 i never think to be on the same half as the other player, or drive towards my front post, and as a result i really struggle against half decent dribblers. Great video! Will take these small details into account!
Do more training before you play it really helps. Try to hit insane shots, even if you don't make them just practicing them will develop your skills. I hit diamond at about 4 days played in my first season. Not saying I'm good, but that is what helped me get out of toxic platinum lolol.
Also known as Jockeying in Soccer, but Shadow Defense sounds more epic! And any word with jock in it reminds me of high school gym locker rooms and Icy Hot. :|
This is by far the most useful Rocket League tutorial out there. So many players don't do this enough and it makes defending a million times easier. Nicely done SunlessKhan!
So ive watched many of your vids.. but never subscribed for some reason. But my good man. The intro to this was amazing. Deffinetly subbing now. (Reminded me odf old machinima days like 2004-2006 stuff)
Great video! Sent it to multiple friends! A few things I feel like were left out as far as benefits to shadowing go. One huge benefit to shadowing is that it is keeping your momentum up, not allowing yourself to be caught in a situation where you are flat footed, that one may be somewhat obvious, though I feel like it important to note as far as a general rule of thumb goes. Second thing I feel like you should be aware of while shadowing, learn to use markers on the ground to know you cars relation to both the wall and your own goal, since your camera will 99% of the time be looking behind you. Learn to guide yourself using the mini boost pads, having this presence of mind is an easy way to rack up 30-50 spare boost for counter attacking in case you lose out on your corner boost after your first defending touch from shadowing. It is also a good way to not take yourself out of the play going for those tasty boost canisters. Great video!
The quality of the videos raise exponentially! Always entertaining, and as a champ 1, I learn things easier the way they are put on the video, make me see how ACTUALLY do it and not I think I have to do it.
I can't believe what an immediate difference this has made in my game... I was on my umpteenth 1v1 loss in a row and I just said "why am i bad" in chat out of frustration. my opponent said "look up shadow defense"... thank you to that guy (whoever/wherever you are) and thank you SunlessKhan!
The funny thing is that since I started playing Rocket League I subconsciously always defended like this. It's only now that you've made a video about it that I can see clearly the advantages.
I never understood before how far to space myself, but that makes a lot of sense- dont give them room to cut the ball infield or across but also stay far enough away to contest a shot or flick
All of the things your learning in this video and the rest of the series are things that will come naturally as you progress in rank, so definitely worth checking this out
Great video. The beginning had me cracking up and there is some actual good content in here. Not that I doubted you man....Either way well done, video was put together very well with great examples.
Another great video by the Mighty Khan! I'll be sure to plug this on a future podcast when we talk about RL, which, inevitably, will probably happen more than once! Thank you for such a simple tip to refine the game! Keep the content coming!
You're really entertaining with your videostyle. I really enjoyed watching the intro and the explanation! It's really creative and well done! Thanks alot 😊
Great Video Sunless. Great explanation of how to achieve this defense method with practical examples using video clips and even humor to go with it! Awesome! Thank you
So many people don’t understand this concept and it’s defense 101 in soccer. You don’t charge a player down in defense and stab at them. You let them slowly gain ground, getting closer and closer until they screw up or you see a chance to challenge safely (preferably when your teammates have gotten behind you)
I'm glad you made this video. I already knew how to do this and didn't even know it was a thing, but I'm happy you are letting others know of it, because I'm tired of teammates freaking out when I don't challenge right away like an angry toddler.
Coming from a Champion 3, “Shadowing” is used to force the player to make a play. For example they’re dribbling so you’d boost up to them but then turn away quickly so they’d flick the ball. JHZER mentions it in one of his 1v1 videos. In this video I saw it more as correct defence positioning. Great video though! Keep up the good work
As a DB in football i naturally do shadow defense in 1s, my problem is finding the right time to attack. I often get it flipped over me or i fail to prevent the cut. This video def helps
I played rugby and American football in highschool and I find it interesting how similar this is to open field coverage, or “man” coverage. When your in a 1v1 situation you have to adapt your defence strategy
I kinda picked up this thing while playing RL, maybe by observing other do it, didn't knew it was a thing with a name, its good to see it from you, keep it up!
dude you're the most original rocket league youtuber. im really glad you decided to take "Why You Suck At RL" series from ironic to educative. keep it up
This helps sooo much! Just before I saw this video I was playing some 1s. And I already did shadow defense unintentionally. It's just the best way to save the ball, because usually ur opponent is waiting for you to challenge him early so he can outplay you easily.
The thing with fast aerials is that if you aren’t aiming for a ball, it doesn’t seem that much faster. But then you do it in a game to hit a ball and you are like, “Damn, that’s fast”
really really really great video. super amazing!! imo shadowing and the exact advice in this video is the difference between plat 2-diamond 3. plat 2 and below can certainly do this, but hardly ever think of it. D2 and above people start to perfect it going into champ+
I had no idea there was a name for this defense style... I've been doing this for over 1000hrs (nearly at 2000 total, KB/M). It felt like I was watching my own replays in this video, minus the 100% gracefulness ofcourse. I get trashtalked for playing like this even though it works. Great video, Khan!
Just tried the training pack. Gotta say it was a bit of a let down, even though the last three (18, 19, 20) were obviously there to ensure you let a few goals through.... lol
intro reminded me of Red v Blue. Good stuff! great info on the vid too. I've done this in my own games, but never noticed how being on the correct half makes a difference.
Not gonna lie as soon as i started shadowing on my 1s game ive been having a 8 win streak and counting. This really does help in the low ranks as the opponent will keep making mistakes, Thank you.
