  • This video is a thorough highly edited explanation of back post rotations. I go in depth of what they are, how they work, why they work, why other methods may not work, and examples of them working in actual high level competitive games.

The UNSTOPPABLE Form Of Rotating In Rocket League:
Back post rotations are thought by many to be the best form of defensive rotations in Rocket League. Even at the highest level of play in RLCS, a version of back post rotations is followed. Back post rotations in Rocket League are easy to learn but hard to master. However, you can start learning them at ANY rank any already see your skill and rank improve. When I started rotating at the back post, I went of 4 ranks in 1 season compared to just 1 rank in my previous season of Rocket League. The main misconception of defensive rotations in Rocket League is that defending in the middle of the goal or at the front post is the best spot to defend. That is 100% untrue. In real soccer, for a goalie, the best place to defend is at the front post. However, unlike in real soccer, Rocket League cars have boost and they don't have designated positions like a shooter and a goal keeper. This is why rotating in Rocket League is essential to having good team chemistry. There have been Rocket League videos made in the past about back post rotations but they haven't done the best about explaining every aspect of why, how, where, etc. in my opinion. In this video, I tried to use my editing skills to make it as clear as possible what back post rotations are, why they are important, what makes them useful, and why other forms of rotating may not work in Rocket League. The thing about back post rotations is that they are strictly meant to be for defense but they can be so useful that sometimes you can easily turn it into a free goal if you do them right. The best way to do this in my opinion is to have someone wait slightly up field for a pass. Sometimes it can be hard to get a clear on defense on your own in Rocket League so having someone there slightly up field to pass to can be extremely useful for relieving pressure and starting a counter attack. Multiple times a session, I'm able to get a few goals using back post rotations and having someone slightly up field to pass to on a redirect clear. It can catch the defense way off guard and be a really good transition on to offense in Rocket League. As you reach a higher and higher level of play in Rocket League, you may start to realize that normal back post rotations don't always work. This is largely because plays at that level happen so fast that you need to cut corners and realize when that's okay on defense in Rocket League. The pros in RLCS are extremely good at this and it's the main reason why people struggle to go from high level grand champ game play to pro game play. But overall, back post rotations in Rocket League are extremely useful for getting you out of the ranks of gold, platinum, diamond, and even champion if you learn to master them.

Yo. I’m 1820 GC and this is great to help lower rank players. You should also in another video show the effects of a near post rotation when ur teammate is on the back post. This causes team bumps, loss of boost management, double diving, and also clearing it across the center of gol, which can lead to the opposition scoring. This will give players an even better perspective on why back post rotations is critical. Excellent job on describing back post rotations to help players.

I appreciate your videos man. I'm in my 30's, I work full time and have a family. I don't want to be gc2. I don't have time to practice crazy dribbles and flip resets but thoroughly enjoy this game. Your videos have helped me rank up using minimal mechanics while just enjoying the small fraction of time I have to put into the game.

I'm a 1750 to 1800 player in 3s, (thats mid-highish GC for you lower ranked players) and I found this incredibly helpful lol. Obviously I know about backpost rotation and I know making yourself available for a pass on defence is important but I didn't realise the two were connected and this really helped me in the 5 games I played after watching this. Timing is very important and its very easy to accidentally creep forward out of the backpost position if it looks like you have an opportunity to push up soon and you arent expressly thinking about it, its the same with making yourself available for a pass out of defence.

With the new free play stuff, I've come up with a little game. Every 5 seconds, you press the Defend Shot button. Best if you press on 0, and count out loud 1,2,3,4,5, 0. Your goal is to save as many as possible, grabbing what boost you can, and keeping back post so you can react to the shot. Also tests your clears/recoveries, since if you don't get good ones, you're left saving a close and difficult shot. Obviously turn off unlmtd boost.

Wayton Pilkin, The way I've thought about defensive back post rotations is rotate to the back post just to show you're in position to play in goal and your mate can move out. IF the play is still moving fast and you need to make a save from the back post, then you're there, ready to make the save. But when play isn't moving so fast and I have some time to think and see the play getting set up, I move myself up to the near post, all the way back in the goal sometimes on the back curve of the goal, siting parallel to, or just a little bit away from the goal wall. This gives enough time and space to be able stop any crosses that are coming in against the wall that you can see coming in, while the opponent can't see you in goal because they can't see through the goal walls like you can from inside the goal (playing in goal, nearside against the goal wall, but all the way back in the goal is advice I got from a coach years ago before there were transparent goal walls, and it has just stuck with me). it also gives enough space and time to make the farside saves too with the extra "road" given by the floor that's actually inside the goal. It also sets you up to be able to clear the ball the opposite direction from where the opponent is shooting, where as if you're making the save from the far you're going to end up hitting it right back in the direction they were shooting in from and they have a chance of keeping the ball. Does that seem to make sense, or do you think it's best to just stay far side post on the goal line? Lol, I don't even know if I'm explaining this well without any kind of visual aid. But this has been my defensive backside/nearside conundrum for a good while now. Any advice/input?

I really like this video because it gives a lot of useful information and with very nice editing that helps a lot. My only slight problem with it is that both video examples of good rotations in-game are the advanced version with passing play
I was looking for something like this to show my gold/plat friends who are getting into the game and still learning it, and reaaaally don't want them to start thinking it's okay to ignore this for the sake of passing right now 😅

im gc and this is something i kind of forgot about because its become muscle memory for me at this point, this video was very interesting, im surprised no one has made this video yet, its such a basic rotation at higher levels i just assumed everyone knew about it. Thank you for making this video because im not sure anyone would have.

This is still very helpful for a gc player. We all miss or go out of rotation. It’s always good for a refresher. And to the lower ranks just keep grinding. Great video nonetheless

  • @iliya1933
    @iliya1933 5 років тому

One thing that might be important to emphasize is that you should only really stay with your nose pointed up the field, ready for a pass from a teammate who rotated in behind you, if you have checked that they have a clear opportunity. I have a teammate who often says "cheating" and stays upfield a little when an opponent is basically 50/50'ing my clear, and especially if the third teammate hasn't yet rotated back, that can give up goals.
Additionally, there are definitely a number of situations where you don't just want to sit at back post either until a teammate rotates behind you or your opponents take a shot. For example, if an opponent is taking the ball around your corner (and you don't have a teammate in front of you challenging), you're going to want to meet them instead of just letting them put the ball in front of your net. Or, if your opponents are making a quick infield pass near your net, likely from the corner, you don't want to be all the way at the back post, because a shot in the front half by an opponent who can shoot well will get there far more quickly than you can, and you can just cover more area against a strong, close quarters shot if you're in the middle of the net as opposed to being on one side of it.
Now obviously you could look at those examples and say, "Yeah, but then those are just times when you have to leave the post to make a save or stop a pass or whatever," but I think some of the confusion about back post rotations is that people often hear this advice and think they're being told that the back post is always where they have to be (unless a teammate has rotated behind them). But besides shots coming from 1/3 of the field away that are relatively easy to block from anywhere, like in the footage you used at 4:45, or unless a teammate is rotating in behind them, people then don't know when they should otherwise be leaving the back post. And then there's things like your footage at 1:50, which kind of contradicts the whole thing you showed at 4:11 about being able to cover the entire net in about 1.5 seconds with a small amount of boost. And I only say that because how much time do you spend at back post with a teammate actually sitting at the near post? Most of the time, they've already headed out or up the wall to challenge the ball, and if you rotate back post while your teammates are out of position and trying to come back while your opponents are passing and/or shooting, sitting right at back post can be trouble.
And with the footage at 2:50, it's actually kind of funny because, while it looks to me like his teammates mostly messed up there, if Cuddles had just done a back post rotation after getting the corner boost instead of making a beeline for the ball that you were clearly getting to first, he might have been able to save it, making that the problem over his boost grab. In that situation, how often is he going to head out of his net with one pad of boost and some opponents on the attack while his teammates are kind of mucking around with their rotation instead of just trying to block an incoming shot anyway? In this example, it at least looked to me like he had time to grab boost and be back in time and with momentum to save a shot at the near post. Although I will say, as he was heading for the boost, my gut reaction was to first check where the opponent was in relation to the orange teammates and the ball, because if the opponent was hitting that off the backboard, then net rotation was definitely the way to go. But this guy took his ball cam off for like an entire second straight and I can't really tell what was happening on the other side of the field.
I didn't write this just to nitpick the video; I'm only trying to show where I think some still existing sources of confusion on back post rotation are, and I just think that providing more examples of when exactly to be where, in all sorts of situations, can help people visualize things more easily. And in being as thorough and seemingly "nitpicky" as this, I wanted to provide context for my thoughts instead of just making my post wasn't just another single-sentence contrarian statement that doesn't actually help anything.

  • @evanc1427

Here’s a scenario I wonder about: when the other team has possession in your corner, I see a lot of pros opt to defend from inside the goal on the near post side net, then shadow any far post shot. This seems like the best way to defend because defending from the back post here leaves the near post wide open.
