  • The Eleiko Öppen Collars are an open-ended barbell collar designed to hold massive poundage. But, will they hold up?
    ✅ Eleiko Öppen Collars - www.garagegymreviews.com/go/e...
    I'll admit it, I love barbell collars. In my attempt to give the recommendation to you guys on the best barbell collars, I've bought and tested all of them. Today, is a review on a product I've been wanting to do for some time...the Eleiko Öppen Collars.
    Eleiko has taken design inspiration from their Öppen Deadlift Bar and made a pair of barbell collars that don't need to be slid on from the side, but rather the top. Sounds like a simple change, but over the course of hundreds of workouts, it can make a difference.
    We put the Eleiko Barbell Collars through the paces, compare them to other like the Rogue USA Olympic Collars and do a COOP Collar Test that may surprise you.

    While I love the functionality of these I dropped mine once and a chunk of the rubber around the front lip of the collars broke off. No big deal they still work but at $90 I figured Eleiko would stand by their product…. I emailed their customer service and told me that the incident qualified as “negligent use”. While I still like the collars I wont be purchasing anything from eleiko in the future. Unfortunately they don’t have nearly the same pride in customer service as Rogue or Kabuki as I have heard of people having issues getting warranties serviced.. Hope this helps if anyone is interested in these.

      Dropping and tossing collars is an everyday thing. If the collar can't handle that it has no place in a serious gym.

      @@richards6431 I never toss or drop any equipment unless they were meant to be. If that’s your thing then these aren’t meant for you. 6:17 has been my experience, after purchasing a month or so ago. If Coop struggles, imagine us mortals.
    The torque angle applied for install/removal makes it a little more difficult and one handed operation impossible most of the time. I saw another review where someone was claiming they could install and remove with one hand easily, but that has not been the case for me. Installation with one hand isn't impossible, but removal is unless you're pulling really fast with excessive force.
    For me personally, these are more difficult to use.

    Coop, another great video! Love your sense of humor too! They look like they are a little tough to open and close. In the time you have been using them, have they softened a little bit? I got a pair of these and LOVE them. Not having to slid collars is a game changer. Theyre also my first magnetic collars. So nice to stick on your rack. If youre not strong i wouldnt recommend them. My non lifting girlfriend for example would have a hard time unlocking them and i could see how that might be frustrating to someone without strong man hands. But they prevent me from getting frustrated sliding a regular collar on and off. I think its much nicer. Using your pointer and middle finger together to flip it open is the way to go. You kinda learn to twist it to the right angle so you can flip it easily. I love them.

    One great thing about this design is you can accidentally put more weight on the bar and forget to take the collar off, then just move it to the outside! For this reason alone I use a pair of 3 dollar Home Depot table squeeze clamps for my bar and have never had an issue. Although I must say, the most "intense" work they get is from deadlifts, but even then they never slide. Definitely would fail the Coop Collar Test however lmao

    I got mine a month or so ago and I really love them. I think for the average joe they are the perfect collar. They cling to the rack when not in use, they are easy to put on and remove, and they hold firm in every day use. Based on this video, MAYBE I would be worried if I was pushing 300+ on shoulder press, but they have stood up well to 400+ lb deadlift drops, and hold up extremely well for just every day lifting. I was curious about how it'd do on Coop's barbell test and even though it didn't do great, the design makes up for it. That test was the reason I got the Rogue collars but after getting them, I realized that test isn't everything. The Rogue collars are a pain to open and close and requires two hands. I was hoping the Oppen collar would be possible to open with one hand, but it seems to be of similar difficulty requiring two hands. One handed open and close is the next frontier for collars.

    • @GarageGymReviews

    Coop. Great review. I have suggestion for another collar test. Load the bar with as many fat bumpers as you can, leaving about 1-1.5 inches of sleeve for the collar, put the collar on so that only half or so of the collar is actually on the bar. Do some deadlifts and see if the collar stays on. I've done it with the rogue Al collars and it works well, not so much with those cheapo plastic ones that everyone sells. I wonder how the Eleiko's would do? I think a lot of other home gym people may do a similar thing if they have a lot of those fat bumpers and are trying to up their dl.

    I was able to snag a pair of these a few months ago and I love them. To me the primary benefit is to be able to leave the collar on in between sets to grab more plates, then it’s a quick up and over kinda swap to clamp on the added plate whereas before you had to remove the collar, grab your plate, slide the collar back on. not sure if that makes me lazy or more efficient lol.
    Not a lot of time saved and I didn’t need that feature but something I’ve grown to really like.

    My only cons to these are the fact they’re such a pain to take off with one hand. They’re *supposed* to be one-handed operation, but if you have smaller hands, it ain’t happening. That being said, I was blessed with clown limbs and it’s still a pain
    I love them, they cut setup time in half, though I was using springs beforehand. Super recommend!

    I think I'll keep my good ol' finger biters, er, Rogue cerakote aluminum. Seems like these would have similar issues with one hand use and trying to not get smacked by the cam. I don't mind having to slide them on the end, I don't think it's tooo game changing to improve the efficiency in a minimal way.

    😂 I think you could have an open face plastic collar. Just change the design, kinda like those locking latches on tool boxes. Actually, now that I think about it, you can do that with every collar. Oh, I almost forgot about Snap Clips. Those collars that are like those snap bracelets

    LOl- I just have to ask -I wonder how busy are you guys in your everyday lives that the time it takes to undo the standard collar needs to be shaved ? Really ? By the way what is that clicking/ grinding sound as you lift the barbell overhead at the 7:09 mark ? IS that microphone static or your shoulders ? That was more disturbing than the collar fail as you pounded up and down on the plates . I bought the Eleiko Oppen Deadlift bar because of your review -just got it a few weeks ago and love it . Thanks ! (that should take some heat off you from Eleiko for this review : )

    Great review as always! Ok, so I just ordered a pair because they seem cool. Don't judge LOL. I already have a lot of Rogue collars and they are really great. Most of my stuff, excepting my Nuobells (which I bought after watching your review!) is Rogue and I love the brand but I thought it might be fun to add these for variety. I like the fact that these will bring a standard 20 kg bar up to just over 45 pounds, so 225 is really 225 and 315 is really 315.

      The Fedex truck just rolled up with them as I started my bench day! Packaging is really nice, shows the attention to detail of a high end item. They are so cool! Worth the $100 just for the nice click when you open them after a set. Magnetic feature is strangely addictive once you start using magnetic collars. Like a heated steering wheel in a car, something you don't think about but something you would miss once you have it. Yes, they are a bit tight to open but come on guys...are you complaining really that something is too tight? LOL Happy new year all and to all a good lift.

    • @GarageGymReviews
      @GarageGymReviews  2 роки тому +2

      I would guess with much surety that the force exerted on a collar is quite a bit more with a 45 LB plate when dropped from overhead than 315 LB deadlifted.

    • @rodrigoalonso9196
      @rodrigoalonso9196 2 роки тому

      @@GarageGymReviews But its the multiple reps that usually makes a difference. Unless you're maxing out, you're going to be doing multiple reps, weather that be dropping it from overhead or from deadlift position. Just frustrating that by the end of the last rep, the weights are distributed differently.
      Also using KG and 3 plates (140KG with Bar) vs 1 Plate (60KG with Bar)
      F=MA
      F=140KG * 9.8 (acceleration due to gravity) * 1 (assuming lifting 1 meter for deadlift)
      F=1,372 for 3 Plates
      F=60KG *9.8 - 2.13 (assuming dropping from a height of 7.5 feet or 2.13m)
      F=1,252.44
      So if my shitty math is correct, the force from doing the force of dropping a deadlift with 3 plates > dropping overhead with one plate
      (although the direct impact to the collar is different than force applied to ground and depends on angle bar is dropped)
