    If you're wondering why I'm holding a Cigar it's because I went to a BlackBerry event here in Toronto for its release. They were rolling fresh cigars on site with the blackberry keyone logo. Plus, there were tons of people wearing suits, i felt it just went with the whole theme! So what do you guys think of the BlackBerry KEYOne??

    • @opiniaodousuario

      I thought you were crazy about cigars only. I would never imagine that they handed out some cigars during the launch event. Good job on the review tho!

      I believe it will be a PERFECT device for any "average" person like me because of it's practical and useful functions and amazing battery life.

      I just subscribed because this is very comprehensive about the phones idiosyncrasies. I noticed you said you personally are not one of the people this phone would suit but otherwise I'd love to see you do a comparison of typing a short passage of text on your daily driver phone's software keyboard and then showing the same on the KeyOne but you probably haven't done enough typing yet to get really accustomed to the keyOne.
      I really hope "Blackberry" (complicated!) make a killing here as I could see heaps of cool variations on this idea and refinements to bezels,screen type,overall size etc.
      cheers

    The Blackberry Keyone is now my daily driver (coming from S7 edge). I'm no business man or CEO, but this phone is definitely a go for people who wants a TREMENDOUS battery life and daily tasks around social medias and communication. The screen is not as sharp as the S7 edge, but it's still a good one (I'd say as much as an iphone). It's not meant to do heavy gaming so if you don't care about it, it's your phone! I personnally didn't see any lag for day to day task like switching apps, social medias, email etc. It happens only when you install and uninstall many apps. Just need a reboot after and the phone comes back to buttery smooth. The scrolling in pages is very smooth compared to the galaxy s7 where you can see some frame drop occasionally. The camera is not as good in low light, but outdoor shots are barely different (it all comes down to preference where the s7 tend to be more satured as we all know).

      Same here, it took a while to get it where i live...but it´s now my daily device. And i had my galaxy s8+ befor i got it, but love the keyboard and shortcuts..:)
      And battery life is sweet, i never play games on phone so for me it´s like a very solid device.

      how is watching video with the black bars?^^

  •  7 років тому +18

    Sorry, may be you did not liked the form factor, but for lots of us, was perfect, and build quality was second to none, Blackberry Passport SE was the best phone BB ever built.

    • @MatthewMoniz
      @MatthewMoniz  7 років тому +10

      +Sebastián Demaría the reason I say the bold is because that's the last solid blackberry I've used. I've never used the passport.

      The SE really was the absolute peak of blackberry. its such a shame they got shot in the foot with that long android app blacklist. i want a passport 2 with android. and i will pay through the nose for it. the keyone, just doesnt compare honestly.

    Great job on the review. Thanks for not trashing it because it's not a media first device like a Galaxy S8! It's probably gonna be my next phone in a few months. BlackBerry's security on android, the keyboard, and the battery life are my reasons why! I'll still have an iPhone as a secondary device but I can't wait to make this my primary!!!

    I will be switching to KeyONE from an iPhone7 for a few good reasons. I'm not a business man but I am a lead technician who a lot of times has to fill out files on the go and send them off...that full screen not being taken up by popping in and out virtual keyboard will be great! My iPhone 7 can't make it half a day without needing a charge or two, i don't have time to charge in the middle of the day, I need that battery life. Just the look of the KeyONE is amazing, it turns heads.

      Vladimir McBride I'm changing to a Blackberry Keyone from my iPhone 6s later this year. I switched from a Z30 running Blackberry 10 OS about 2 years ago and I miss the practicality and battery life as you mentioned. I only changed as I couldn't get some productivity apps from Blackberry World but now they use Android I won't have that issue.

    Dope stuff Matt! I was thinking a lot about this phone and I have jumped to the conclusion that I feel Microsoft would of benefited more from purchasing Blackberry more so than any other company. Since Blackberry aims at productivity, aesthetics, and ease of use it would of been a great addition to the Surface lineup.

    I'm in love with this device. Finally, I have a SMART physical keyboard phone and I mean it when I type SMART. For the past two years I was using the BlackBerry Passport, I loved it but the main problem was the operating system (few apps are available for it) and the new design for the keyboard (you are not familiar with it even if you are expert in blackberry Keyboards). Nowadays with the Keyone, I'm more than fine with the Android "Stock" system and the traditional classic blackberry's keyboard. Yeah I still use my iPhone 7 Plus only for snapchat and youtube, but the Keyone is more than enough for the rest. However, I sent my BlackBerry Keyone to be gold-plated to give it more luster lol. I just enjoy it.

  • @mwr1589
    @mwr1589 7 років тому +4

    I think it can probably be great for social media as well. Maybe not for video but as someone who owns a tablet, this wouldn't be my main device for media consumption. With good cameras, you can easily use this for snapchat or instagram and this would be killer for twitter as you can see so much on screen while typing.

    • @ibexking69
      @ibexking69 7 років тому

      Matt Reiman that's my thing. I have a tablet, and unless I'm at lunch I don't use my phone for media.

    • @mwr1589
      @mwr1589 7 років тому +1

      chillin santa yeah that's the same reason why I'm getting one. I have a tablet that is better for media but I rarely use it cause my phone is big and always on me. with this i can be more productive when I need to be portable and use my tablet like you said. I don't consider social media the same as media consumption.

    Hate to disagree with you but I did not purchase this thing out of emotion or nostalgia. Sure, nostalgia is a perk, but after having owned tons of phones with different operating systems, I got it for:
    - The keyboard: yeah, so I like hardware keyboards better. I can type without looking, and I'm more accurate. Also: the passing mention that the keyboard shortcuts are getting really don't do that time-saving convenience any justice. It's awesome.
    - BlackBerry security. Kinda goes without saying in this insecure world...
    - Battery life: I can't stress this enough. Finally living without battery anxiety truly has been refreshing.
    I'm not a gamer and don't need an entertainment device in my pocket. Having said that I've got over 130 apps installed and this phone handles everything I throw at it with aplomb. People should start re-thinking why they're buying these things in the first place... do you need a well-built communication tool that can do fun on the side and last all day? ... Or an entertainment device that's okay at communications and dead by dinner? ... I'll take the former.

  • @Sbomb16

    I always like it when companies like BlackBerry and other smaller companies try new ways to show off their unique hardware. I tried the Priv when it first came out, which turned out to be a complete dud. The battery life was at around an hour of screen up-time MAX, and it even had some dead pixels on arrival. I did, however, love the keyboard on the Priv, despite its flaws. I then switched to the Galaxy Note 5, which I still own to this day. I'm curious to see how well this device does, and seeing how it's almost been 2 years since the Note 5 came out, I may just have to try the KeyOne out for a test drive.

    excellent review matthew!but another phone got excited now:the htc u 11!i feel that this phone could be top 5 easily,and could be the phone of the year even if samsung didnt put his note 8 out yet,but htc is back.Im waiting for your review on it,and i'd like to know the improvement about blinkfeed and the presentation of the weather(hourly) of the the u 11 cause because of the themes color and size reading the weather on the m7 was a better experience to me than the m8.keep up the good work man.

I used to be the phone for work guy, loved the hub and how easy it was to 'get shit done', but I find like many, I am actually starting to enjoy the 'entertainment' aspect of what the phones are capable of. I think you're misrepesenting BlackBerry. 'They need to speed things up'? Theres barely any lag, it keeps up with an s8 at app launching and My keyone has 52 hotkey shortcuts assigned that perform tasks 2-3 steps within apps after only a single touch. in other words it's 2-3 times faster than any other non BlackBerry device on the market.You don't like a convenience key that can instantly jump to your most common app or task from any app. the only compromise with the keyone is screen size.
    If used right: it can perform a users most repetitive tasks in less than half as many taps/gestures as other devices.

    Why do you want the ear jack port on the bottom? Really dumb when you put it back in your pocket it's stuck under the phone - very awkward. I much prefer that port on the top of the phone.

    • @Mirko9351
      @Mirko9351 7 років тому

      You can simply put the phone upside down in the pocket. Having it on the bottom helps when you want to actually use the phone while listening to music, the port and the cable don't stick out like pull-out antennae on phones from the 90s.

    • @MrAndrew1953
      @MrAndrew1953 7 років тому

      No having the ear jack port on the top of the phone makes much more sense to me. Absolutely no question about it.

    I think in contrast to others you are one of the few person who really get the whole concept of that device! Others compare it to the Galaxy 8 or so and say: "It can't keep up. Processor too slow. Screen not for multimedia bla, bla." - this device is purely meant to communicate in the most secure way Android can be over multimedia and to last out as longs as possible over latest graphics.

      Mirrorless!
      What did you have before going to Sony? are you going to invest in lenses or just use it to shoot video? I have a D7200 APS-C... If I go Full-Frame with Nikon my lenses will be compatible, but if I go mirrorless I'll have to re-invest
      p.s. I'd like to get an unlocked KeyOne direct from BlackBerry... but unlike their previous phones you can't pre-order one from their shopblackberry site. I don't want the one from Rogers.

      Man ! You're talking about two different worlds, really.
      1st : iphone is for " extremely busy " people, since the OS doesn't have any freedom or flexibility, but gets job done + better performing apps.
      2nd : Note 8 and Pixel 2 are for android lovers who use multimedia on their phones & don't care about tablets (though Note series have creative features & time-saving benefits).
      3rd : Blackberry phones in general, including this, are productivity devices mainly ; acting as a real phone, as a secretary (manage dates, reminding tasks, collecting all your business & personal affairs) + an efficient documents editor & a secure communication line.
      Now, which kind of phones you need more ?
      Sorry for bothering you, I just tried to help 😊

    Wireless charging makes the phone get too warm when charging. Much prefer lightning as on my 6S Plus or the KeyOne, Sony Xperia XZ.

    It's a real shame that in comparison to the bold it falls completely short on every single spectrum. From the clunky laggy embarrassing processor that despite what so many people tend to say on these videos absolutely does overheat therefore not using a newer processor doesn't make any sense at all. Pricing this at 550$ is mind boggling when really you are only paying for the look of the phone. It can hardly handle every day tasks with more then a few social media apps opened at once before it starts crashing. They very easily could have put out a top end flagship phone with this design (with a few tweaks I'll go over in a bit) and using updated internals and actually putting some thought into what should be inside a smart phone in 2017 and it would have been a home run. The hardware is absolutely beautiful. The convenience key is just that.. extremely convenient and allows for an array of things to be launched with it. The capacitive keys are yet again another thing on this phone poorly thought out. When using the keyboard to swipe through the interface or social media, you will constantly find yourself accidentally hitting those and going home or back and it's beyond frustrating. You get an entire keyboard with all these shortcuts but can't program the space bar to take you home? 🤔 going from any phone with a home button/finger print reader.. you will find that you will hit the space bar over and over to try and go home only for it to do absolutely nothing; now this could obviously be addressed with an update but really shouldn't need to be when this is touted as a phone for convenience and ability to get things done quicker and something as simple as that is not present. I had extremely high hopes for this phone and really expected a much better device then what this delivers. Over priced and extremely underwhelming. Consumer to consumer.. don't waste your money.

    My Keyone started off great(I've had it for 14 months) and now it has connectivity issues, doesn't load certain apps, websites, Wi-Fi works only sometimes. This is after I did a reset because it had even worse issues, thinking it would help. It didn't. This is a known issue between BlackBerry and Sprint, and neither have released a fix for it. So I'm stuck with a phone that only works when it wants.
    Do not buy these phones!

    Wireless charging is stupid. You can't use you're phone. Play games, watch videos, you can't move it while it's charging. I'd rather have it plug in.
