Nothing like a big ole helping of scientific method. Thanks CC Rider...this will be useful to countless Radders!

this may be useful too - ua-cam.com/video/R5nsSIlhnms/v-deo.html
@@catspaw3815 I don't know man, I bet those Radrovers are persnickety performers at best, and probably no fun at all. I'd rather sit home and pack sand, myself. Looks like if you sneezed the thing would fall apart. ;-) Have you got it yet?
I've been watching you for awhile, you give me hope! I'm disabled (poor). Ive been saving for 18 months, I have 1700.00 now. I only can afford rad rover. I have no tools and I'm not mechanically inclined, I was a cook before becoming disabled. Lol but I'm heavy, so I need upgrade, I'm going to but the new controller, with new screen, and show someone your videos and pay them to install it for me. I'm also buying the duel parallel battery connecter from Bolton, then save up and buy a 48v 20ah and run it parallel with the stock rad battery, then on long rides I'll have a battery approximately 48v 36ah! I know I'll need it because I'm out of shape, weak legs, diabetic, blood pressure bad, etc. So the throttle will be my best friend for awhile. Hopefully I can add some peddling when I get Healthier, I was 280 I'm now down to 257 from walking my dog. Your videos are great and a true source of ebike knowledge.
Jesus dude.
I'm 350 lbs and the Rad Rover 5 works fine for me just stock.
When saving SSI, don't accumulate funds within the bank or they may assume you don't need it and take it back... just so you know.
Get the step thru dude it's awesome. Pedal assist 3 lower gear u don't even feel like ur pedaling. Bike does all the work.
CitizenCycle, you have created one of the most informative, accurate, and relevant ebike videos available anywhere. Super job!
Far to kind! Flattery will get you everywhere my friend 😁
@@CitizenCycle925 the 35 amp controller you have on your website can be paired with a bafang 750w kit right? at that point doesnt have to do with rad anymore?
@@darkfocust2467 That is the way I understand it but I am not an expert.
I'm going for the controller and the motor.. Excellent research and very good work!! Not bad for a "regular guy on the YOU-TUBE"!!
Much appreciated!
@@CitizenCycle925 what if your on a trip and it starts down pouring should you pull over and cover it and wait? Is there a way to waterproof and ebike? From what I've seen they are water resistant which is pretty scary if the motor burns up and it cost so much. I think I'm going to wax mine. I guess it couldn't hurt my grandfather always waxed is Studebaker and it lasted forever
@@LetArtsLive I carry a zip lock bag to cover the controller screen but I've ridden through rain without issues.
@@LetArtsLive my Rad bike regularly gets a soaking, just don't submerge the electrics and make sure to let the bike dry out completely the next day.
@@CitizenCycle925 what your settings for ? also did you make a video showing your settings?
Excellent! I have watched the entire process, you have done a journeyman job. I don't have a rad bike but watching you has given me more confidence in modding my bike. I look forward to seeing more. 👍👏👏👏👏
awesome! good luck on the mods!
FINALLY!!! Someone who knows how to make a good comparison video. This answers every question I have except one (steep grade climb). After watching this you saved me lots of $$$. I think I’ll just go with the controller upgrade for now. If that doesn’t give me what I need for the steep grades I have where I live then I’ll try the motor. Don’t see a need for the others (unless I need more range later). Thanks for doing this and please keep ‘em coming.
Only one way to improve this video is to eat buttered popcorn while watching.
Hahaha nice!
Hey could you post your settings on your controller upgrade? I have a mini, 52v battery and 35 amp bolton controller that will not run.
@@gerardlewis3098 you might have to post that question in the main comments. He may not see this since it's under mine.
Brilliant video & commentary again.. you always tell it as it is & always make me feel good about whatever you have done to your bike.
As someone who has just taken the plunge with a RadRhino (EU Rover), I'm very happy to see that upgrades are definitely a thing. Thanks for all your videos, they are very informative.
This is a well-done video. Well planned and well executed. And for me, very useful. I'll start with replacing the controller instead of going whole hog with the motor. Many thanks for having done this for us.
My name is Dante Pastrano, a Krav Maga instructor and a IPMBA (International Police Mountain Bike Association) certified Security Cyclist. I own a 2018 Rad Rover. I enjoy watching your videos because of your unbiased and honest opinions and comments. I have some accessories installed for patrolling purpose. I did upgrade the brakes to hydraulic, with a Zurich set with 4piston caliper and a thicker 180 mm rotors.
I couldn’t be happier, not only for the performance improvement, but the knowledge I gained by doing it myself. But again, this is about you being a good source of inspiration. By the way, I am waiting for the controller upgrade i ordered through Bolton Bikes and just recently ordered the 750watts motor from ElectroBikesWorld. I will ordered the 52v battery as well. Like you, I don’t like the idea of installing a battery using Velcro or any straps. Thanks again for all your hard work, I truly appreciate you!!
yes!! awesome comment :) glad i could inspire a little. that is one goal of my channel, inspire others in some way. thank you for the kind words :) I am really thinking about doing the brake upgrade. i didn't want hydraulic because i like the simplicity of cable brakes; however, my brakes feel very underpowered and they are not smooth, rotors are bent. i think you will be happy with your upgrades, i know i am pleased with mine, it is like a totally different bike now. Soon no criminals will be able to escape you !! :)
CitizenCycle Actually, I am a civilian, not a law enforcement person, however I teach Krav Maga (Israelis self defense ) to cops and I’m a co-developer of Krav Maga on Bicycle. Hence, an IPMBA member and guest instructor. I co-own Krav Maga Minneapolis, LLC. KravMagaMpls.com. We are parr of the IKMF family. International Krav Maga Federation based in Israel. We are actually working on adapting the program to the eBikes. About upgrading to hydraulics, I research UA-cams videos and selected the Zurich but the Tektro would have been a good choice too. I have not prior experience whatsoever with any type of bikes brakes, but I was getting tired of adjusting the mechanical brakes from factory. At one point I replaced then with another mechanical brakes and wasted my time and money. I learned how to install and bleed the HD brakes; They are awesome. I will send you some pictures of my bike if you’d like to see it.
@@dantepastrano3028 does the brake upgrade retain the motor cutoff cables?
CitizenCycle Excellent question! I was seconds away from disaster when all of the sudden the light bulb click on. The factory cutoff cable of the RadRover is standard; I used the ones from the RadRover to replace the one that came with the Zurich. I ordered the Zurich with the wrong connector, so I was about to cut the connector from the RadRover original Tektro, luckily I realized that the cutoff portion that attach the lever is a magnet an it was exactly the same size as the new one. So I just swapped them. Believe me, you will only regret not having done it before! The Difference is amazing and not having to adjust them that often, is priceless to me.
really enjoy the way you explain things....very down to earth...and so easy to follow...thanks.
Great video! Very informative, thanks for sharing. I've done the Controller upgrade, purchased the new motor and will not be upgrading the battery. Your tests here just solidified that decision. Once again, thanks for all your videos... they are great!
Glad it helped
Thanks for sharing all your video's. I know it must take a lt of time and efforts to not only figure out what to show, but also all the time it takes to video, and then edit everything to get the video to come out good! I have the Radrover E-bike, and I simply LOVE riding it! Mine is totally stock!
Yes, it certainly takes a lot of time but I enjoy doing it 🙂
nice piece of information and testing. it's appreciated and i realize that you've spent a lot of time so we can learn about what you've done, thanks much!!
Just trying to add some useful information to the UA-cam world 🙂
So Mr. CitizenCycle, I have the same exact bike in So Ca. I don't mean a similar Rad Rover, I mean I have taken you advise and replicated your bike over here. I am so glad to have found your videos, it was the most comprehensive and informative. Thank you for all the referrals from where to by and what you paid. All the vendors have worked out well and couldn't be happier. So if you find yourself roving in So Cal, and see your same bike, trust me it is a result of your awesome videos. Thanks again!
haha, well thank you for the kind words. i'm glad the videos were helpful and that the upgrades worked out for you. i have more upgrades coming to the rad :)
Most informative video online on this topic. Thanks so much for being so clear and detail oriented.
Wow, I’ve watched several of your videos man, outstanding.
Just completed a year on my bike, full time, this weekend, now looking for a electric bike, you’ve helped make a confusing decision a tad easier!
Cheers from Canada brother!
Glad you found the content helpful!!!
Great video. Thx! Your testing analogy was perfect. After you recover from the battery finance hit, yes on the brakes.
thanks Roger! brakes seems like a smart next step
This video is awesome! So helpful. Really really appreciate all the time and effort you put into this.
Very useful. Controller already ordered. Love your videos.
Outstanding!!! Excellent well done. Was really looking forward to your thoughts
thanks for the kind words Keith! hope it was helpful
Great videos , awesome info . Thank you for all of it . My question is I’m more looking for power and range not so much higher top speed. I’m wondering if the controller upgrade and battery upgrade would do it .. not so stoked about pulling off the back tire , ripping out the stock motor and fitting the new Motor back in and making that backend work ..
I have the control on my rad rover and next month new motor. Thanks for the videos grate job.
You are such a positive for the E bike world! Thank you!
Trying to put some useful info out there!
Thanks so much. My bike is supposed to arrive in. July. Can’t wait.
Awesome thumbnail and awesome video!! I ordered the controller and the motor. Just counting down the days before it arrives on my doorstep! I'll probably buy an extra 48v battery and mount it on the rear rack for longer range. Thank you for the tutorials and the performance updates!
I just finished my motor upgrade. Pro tip: order a new freewheel instead of trying to swap the stock one to the new motor. Removing the freewheel from the old motor is almost impossible because they torque it down to insane tightness at the factory. This is the one I ordered: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00JVK7OPO
yes, not having to remove the old freewheel was a huge plus!
finally, a comment on the thumbnail!!!! thank you! i was going for a hilariously unrefined look, i was laughing as i uploaded hahaha :) good luck with your upgrades.
Here I am no expert either, bambuzled by all the tech info which actually prevents me from buying one of these bikes. There you are an ordinary Joe soap sharing your experience and your on the bike knowledge, wow I am impressed, you picked a great interest a great hobby? I am delighted you shared this, love what you have done with the bike, many many happy miles of cycling ahead for you, Cheers Dude👍
Time to upgrade to dual motor. You have all the parts. Thanks for the awesome videos
I didn't see this comment...I asked as well.
Thank you for all those excellents informations, I’ll definitely go with the new controller.
Thanx
Simply the best e-bike upgrade video in the whole UA-cam
Great informative video my man. Keep on keeping on. 👍
Excellent review!! I got a 2020 rad mini step thru and i love it! The upgrade contoller is on my list! Thanks for your videos.
we have a 2020 Rad mini stepthru as well, my lady rides that one, cool looking bike. i may upgrade controller for her as well.
That was very uplifting for me because I'm just in the stage of trying to figure out what to upgrade on my 20in fat tire bike.
Thanks for the video. Was waiting for it. I thought you would've got 40 with the battery upgrade. Acceleration to me is more important. Good job. Love watching your stuff.
Wow! The controller upgrade alone seems awesome!
It is, great bang for your buck!
Great job! I learned a lot and you present it all very well.
Love your vids dude. Subscribed. I ordered my Rover yesterday but it's on back order. Can't wait to get it. Thanks for for the vids and helping me to make my decision.✌
Thanks Charles! Glad you are enjoying my videos. Hopefully you don't have to wait a crazy long time to get your bike.
Awesome Bruh... Just got my RAD bike this month... will upgrade it step by step.
Great Video! Very enjoyable to watch. I agree next step is dual motor/dual battery 😄. You pretty much have all the parts required too.
glad you enjoyed the video! we will see whats next, probably brakes is the smart thing.
Thank you for your videos! Looking forward to a brake upgrade one..
Great video. Thanks! I'm considering my first e-bike and the Rad Rover 5 looks like a good starting point. I will ride it stock at first, but look to get the 35 amp controller for sure. That seems like the #1 upgrade.
I want to first thank you for all the work you put in to do this! That also goes for the work you put in to make the videos too. I can't imagine how much work that is. Great results! Good news; My Radrover is coming on Tuesday (07/21/20)! I'm super excited!.

planning on converting my old bike into an awd mongoose monstah! its an old bike ive had since i was younger (maybe around 5 yrs old) im 18 now. rlly coo vid n highly detailed which was perfect. subbed
Did the controller upgrade on my 2017 radrover and agree it's worth it. I do 30+ mile rides in lots of big hills. They claim 20 miles at 20 mph on the flat. Cannot confirm cuz never seen what 20 miles of flat looks like. I've done roundtrip from Norway to Bethel Maine (49 miles) on one battery. Was doing battery anxiety cuz the BBQs bars and strip clubs have I would normally charge up on my travels have been closed. Bought 2nd battery for last hills to my house cuz Tommy doesn't push 80 lbs up hill. Wish I'd known about the 52V 17.5 ah battery cuz rad stock (2017) is 11.5 amp hours. I could problably do 60-70 mi with that rig. Trying to burn up my stock motor so I'll have to upgrade to the bigger 750 watt motor. Perfect rig for those of us who used to be pushing 65 are but are now pulling. Very useful series of videos for the radrivers of the world. Kyle at Bolton better be making a bunch of controllers cuz I think the demand will be going up. Also should stock up on those motors. I'll be adding the hydraulic brakes next. I finally replaced my pads after 1400 miles and was pleased to see that having brakes that stopped you is nice.
thanks for the comment Tom! you are really pushing that bike!! certainly much harder than i am, i just cruise around town most of the time and its all flat. i like your charging locations hahaha! :)
Thanks for your time and very honest opinions!!
Great videos man. I've been watching them all and trying to determine which bike I want to purchase. Good content.
thank you for the kind words! Best of luck in your purchase there are so many to pick from!
Tks for sharing your experience!
Hey well done. I got mine a couple of weeks ago. I already put on 200 miles. Great info.
awesome! enjoy!
Great comparison video, I have the 2019 rover and I'm waiting on the controller upgrade from Bolton. Been waiting over 2 months now but like you said...so gonna be worth it...maybe ill do the motor and battery upgrade as well...digging the same battery look..i prefer that as well over the triangle battery. Keep the vids coming!!!
did you get it, how s the difference uphill ?
Excellent stuff! My controller order is in, motor will be next. Thanks CC!
Right on!
The controller alone creates the most substantial gains.
It seems to me the best cost to power increase ratio is to only upgrade the controller. The hill climb power was significantly increased just by upgrading the controller. It was increased adding the motor and battery too, but not by a lot. If you want better top end speed then the new motor and battery is a must but for me, hill climb power is more desirable than top speed as 24mph is plenty fast enough for me and anything above that really isn't much fun on a an ebike. Love the vids, you just found a new subscriber!
You have a really great energy on screen :)
well thank you very much :) appreciate that comment!
This has been so very informative and I thank you for taking the time to do the upgrades and for taking us along for the ride :) - I think if I do the upgrading, I'll go the same route you did, with the controller first, and then the motor. I feel pretty sure that I will go ahead and get the upgraded battery as well, because I have a thing about range, and wanting to get as much as possible. At the moment, with all stock parts, I'm looking at approximately a 40 mile range (I've only done 21 miles and gotten the stock battery down to about 50%), but know that with more top speed and torque, the battery won't last nearly as long. Still 'breaking in' the Bikeroo seat, and can only get about 12 miles before my butt goes numb :-P
good luck with future mods. i havent tested range yet, honestly, range tests are my least favorite thing to do haha, i don't really care about range, i am only riding 5-15 miles at a time. maybe look at suspension seat posts...numerous people have told me they are great, i may add one.
Brilliant video. Love it. Thanks for the upload.
Great video! You're honest and very helpful!
Great detailed quality video. Thanks for answering lots of questions.
Glad it was helpful!
Best UA-camr on the internet....solid video.
Haha that's a bold claim!
This weekend, I installed the same Bolton controller in my 2019 RadRover. Much better acceleration as expected, but it tops out at 25MPH and I can feel and see the watts being tapered as that speed threshold is hit. Much like the stock controller did. I see your controller continues to delivers higher watts even past 25 MPH. I'm going to try mirroring your settings to see what that does. It feels like it should be able to go faster. Thanks for the great videos!
Did it work?
@@marcobarone8848 With the stock Rad motor, my new controller still seems to limit power above 26MPH or so. But it gets me to that speed much quicker, and goes up hills much better.
I believe his is a 2018 rad rover so it might be that his stock motor is slightly different than a 2019 rad rover. I have the same 2019 model and ran into the same problem after controller upgrade. You can feel the bike being limited somewhere once you hit around 25 MPH. From what I understand the 2019 models have a limiter built into the motor itself so unless you switch the stock motor out you will continue to artificially limited.
It's kind of lame but whatever. I only really notice it on downhills where I can feel the motor ramping down hard when I hit 25 very quickly thanks to the decline. I'll have to do a motor swap one of these days when I have the spare cash.
Edit: I have now swapped the motor, my suspicions were right that rad motors on the 2019 were throttling. My top speed went up to around 31-32MPH after the swap vs 23-25MPH before. No way it's because the new motor is that much more powerful, it's just not being artificially limited. It's kind of annoying of rad to make me have to spend hundreds of dollars to get around their stupid invisible limits.
Great review 👍 I was looking forward to this and you did a great job.......
Thanks Michael, hope the info helped or was at least entertaining.
Thanks for the information. Food for thought.
Nice video, thanks for all of your hard work and testing....you sir are an influencer, because of you I purchased the controller (ordered in May, still waiting to receive), making the purchase for the motor later...maybe.
Great information! Thanks for making these videos!
Thanks! Just what I was looking for! Not a technical guy but feel I could do this!
You could definitely do it. And if you got the money they are great upgrades
Glad to hear that anyone with basic mechanical skills can do what you can. Testing the result of each upgrade is very scientific. Are you an engineer?
Plus your sense of humor makes your channel super entertaining! thanks bro!

The bbshd mid drive lets you go from first gear to 7 great for low end tork and high end speed .i do like your ride it is simple and to the point .nice vid as always.
wow what an eye opener!! Thank you so much sir. This is a great video, with clear information and you did a fantastic job. Everything looks real clean and slick. The tests speak for themselves. How can we test if the battery made a significant change to distance? I have to get mine and upgrade it and come down to NC to race! lol I'm glad you did it yourself, and showed honest results and observations.
Thank you for the kind words. Glad you enjoyed the video. Let me know when you're ready to race!!😁
Great videos.... Have been keeping an eye on this with interest, have a radwagon 4 preordered and with time hoping these upgrades will be available for this bike
thanks Pat. hope the Radwagon works out for you, never seen one of those in person. hopefully your wait is not too long.
Hi from the UK with my 2015 Radrover (circa 1650 miles to date). Best upgrade so far has been to fit hydraulic brake callipers (Zoom). Next is a DC to DC (12v) converter to upgrade the front light and to widen my choice of what to put on. 32mm front forks are on order, the standard fit are very cheap and have had it. Really interested in the 35A controller and will look into this - all very not allowed here... Thanks so much for the reviews!
I subbed after I picked up a rad wagon 3 used off Facebook marketplace with front/back baskets with front/back cooler bags so I can use delivery apps like uber/skip/dash to pay for my bike. With the cost of a 1 bedroom apartment in Vancouver BC Canada exceeding $2600/month Canadian I think an ebike is a great investment. Now to find a way to make it and me more visible at night with el lights
Badass ... I’ve got a 2019 with the same upgrades minus the battery ... dig your videos and BTw you might have the best audio on UA-cam ... so many can’t figure out the audio for good reviews

underrated video, I just got two Rad Rover 6 for myself and my girlfriend and was looking for modding possibilities... this answers all my questions! Thanks! Shame the bolton controller is gone :( but I assume other brands work similar in spec.
I'm pretty sure you have the fastest Rad Rover I've seen 💯👍👍😁
Maybe.. certainly the fastest one I've ever seen
Awesome video!! Planning to upgrade my ecotric fat tire, and I've been catching sales here and there, which definitely cuts costs.
Great job Bro.. Thank you!
As someone with a 2019 rad rover who upgraded the controller and the motor a year apart these results line up with mine. I weigh quite a bit more than the person in the video so my speeds are going to be a little lower than seen here.
So, just the controller upgrade is HUGE. Top speed was 23 MPH which was better than the 20 MPH I was getting at stock but the 2019 rad's have a limiter built directly into the motor so I was still getting throttled here. Not that it mattered because the amount of extra torque and hill climb was nuts. I could now accelerate through hills instead of inching up them while losing speed (lucky to maintain 10MPH before) and getting up to top speed takes half the time. Makes the bike feel so much more powerful even if the default rad motor was capping my top speed.
I installed the new motor this year and my top speed is now 31MPH which tells you how hard the default rad motor was holding back. I don't suspect the default motor is actually that much worse if it was allowed to just do it's thing but whatever, I'm sure rad has it's reasons. Not much else besides top speed changed though. Doesn't feel like I gained any torque, I just have more room to breath before I cap out on speed. It is nice being able to stay with traffic in a city though, there is a noticeable lack of tension on the roads now. Before a lot of cars would ride my ass or make some pretty dangerous passes to get around me. Not as much anymore so maybe consider the motor/controller combo a road safety upgrade if you live in a city.
I'll grab the battery eventually but I don't suspect it will offer much extra and it's super expensive. I'll buy it when my current battery bites the dust but I'm not rushing out to buy for it for performance. There just isn't enough of a difference between 48v/52v to do anything but get me to like 32MPH with my fat ass riding it if it only got the person in this video a couple extra MPH.
TY for shearing.
Love ya videos I watch all of ya videos ! I’m waitin on my ravrover5 to come to nyc , I got so much accessories for it already plus I ordered my controller now I’m goin to order the motor an call it quits 👍🏾

CitizenCycle yeah thy have a lot for Food delivery but thy plain in all black an the old big big square battery... nyc now getting up on the radpower bikes we have a few on the streets already ..
1st I want to compliment you for all the good information in this and all of your videos.
One thing people should consider with a EBike is total weight. Your Bike even with the battery removed could cause some issues.
This is very important when you are putting your bike on a car rack or a repair stand. First you will need to lift your Ebike onto them. Also they have a max weight limit that you should not exceed.
I believe my car rack is limited to 75 pounds per bike and it is a heavy duty Ebike specific car rack. Regular car bike racks are limited to 50 pounds or less. Yesterday at my local bike shop I saw an Ebike one that was limited to 60 pounds (do not think it would handle a Rad Rover).
My repair rack is limited to 80 pounds and again this is a repair stand I specify purchased to handle my ebikes, regular (home) bike repair stands handle no more than 50 pounds.
You should remove the battery and anything that can reduce the weight, but be aware that weight can be an issue when transporting and repairing an Ebike. So be aware of the weight.
Wow I never knew bike carriers were so weak. most e-bikes weigh over 60 pounds. I have a truck so not an issue for me but good information thanks!!
Awesome!!! Thanks for sharing... 👍
Great video!
Great video.... Thanks for making it!
Glad you liked it!
Badass!!! waiting to get a rad rover. Eastcoast hope i can before winter. When they are in stock.
seems Rad an others have long wait times at the moment. my father just waited 4-6 weeks for his from Lectric, should arrive tuesday. if you know what you want, you better order!!
Best Rad Rover post upgrade testing on the internet. Thanks for your time and efforts!! So, who has a used Rad Rover for sale?
Thank you so much. I really appreciate that comment!
i do, 2019, 400 mi, never dumped, really cant ride it anymore, two knee reps, hip reps, back has to be fuzed, ill look back here in couple days.glou. mass.
Great video, thank you
That thumbnail though 🤣👍👍
i was laughing as i uploaded, i wanted the cheesiest photoshop fail look that i could get, how can you not click that hahahahah!
Excellent! Excellent! Excellent! Costing it out was the best thing as you are spot on as to then how to proceed. I’ve put in that amount and haven’t ripped the bike apart yet. Won’t till I get the Juiced Hyper Scorpion. Whalen all is done the RadMini will be my mule and the Hyper my cruse show bike! As to your hub being warm try dialing controller back to 30amps? Save the motor! And interesting as to 48v and 52v batteries delivering about the same. This makes me feel positive about my Juiced Hyper buy as it’s a 1000w motor with 52v battery. The 1000w motor better able to absorb the current sent to it. To I bought Grins technology battery satiater to insure good compatibility with BMS.
Love the video! Did you have to adjust any particular controller settings after replacing the motor and battery?
Great video
Great videos ... thank you.
Outstanding. Great job on this. For the performance 5lbs is nothing.
