I take no responsibility if you try anything I do.

I can confirm that Resistor R329 has a written value of 15-Ohms, and it also measures as such while on the card.
I have a card with an identical layout from MSI.

Man your videos are awesome. I've got quite a lot of retro cards ( creative gf4400ti, gf4200ti, gf2ti, 9800xt, 9500pro...) that have similar artifacts. Thought the problem would either be gpu core or bad ram chips. Never thought that a single bad resistor could lead to artifacts. Thanks for the videos! Really enjoy them!

cracked and missing resistors are more common then bad ram or GPU.
I would say 90% of times people just knock them off and then you get floating address or data lines on your ram causing random bit flips that gives you the random artifatcting pattern you see on the screen.
But there are GPUs like the 9800 series that run hot and go bad (have not had much luck fixing those), also the Nvidia 6000 series seems to go bad (have a 6600GT with a dying GPU).
But older card tends have missing or damaged resistor causing the problems more then anything else.
Can also be lose legs like on the older V1 and V2 types of cards with QFP style chips causing similar issues.

A very nice card! And finally the "magic finger" gets some attention! I've found several broken connections this way. It is always worth a try.

    •  2 роки тому

Yea gave the magic finger a try again and it worked XD

@ I got a GF2 GTS AGP (ASUS V7700) this week in a box of junk. It posts fine but without VGA signal. With a secondary PCI VGA the card is shown in device manager as GeForce2, but with error 10 "device failed to start". Some components were knocked off lose on the back. I've put them back on. Voltages seem to be ok (there is VDD core, VTT+VDDQ+VREF for RAM). Cap ESR's are good. I can't find anything else that is obvious. I will check for hairline cracks next time. Do you have any further tips for me on what else to check?

Very well done. I love geforce 2 cards. I had in 2001 Creative total annihilator GTS 64mb and was fast

Thank you for the video I am starting to collect gpu's from my era (2004) so the nvidia FX series. Do you go to LAN's? and what games do you play? Cheers

I got to Retro Lans when possible and I usually crew Braindrainlan in Sweden. its a 1999 era Retro LAN party once a year.
I prefer to play Counter Strike.
But I also like to do Co-op games like Quake2.
Sometimes we do 486 lans then its Doom2 and Duke Nukem 3D.
We have game nights on our Discord server so we play old games online with old and new computers between the LAN party's.
I got some of my best 3Dmark2000 scores with a FX5900U., they are underrated cards in my view.

nice fix again, amazing it just a couple of broken resistors. The big cap looked bulged but the small ones it was hard to tell on the video...were they visually bad or did you feel that you should just do them all?

    •  2 роки тому

Small once you wont see if there bad because they usually cant swell, they can leak out the bottom tough.
You have to measured ripple to figure out if there bad usually.
And if they are bad, and most likely are they would cause instability under heavy loads like 3D rendering.
Also the SMD caps was like 1-2€ total for the small 10uf and 22uf so not gonna break the bank so its just easier to replace them then bother with trying to figure out if there still good, (most likely not).

Impressive! What kind of flux did you use for the SMD soldering?

25:40 AGP 1x - is that NV control panel issue or actual mode? May be smt. with chipset driver? Or reinstall forceware?

30 years later and gpus cost 10x more

    •  2 роки тому

      yea XD
Remember when I could by GTX260 for 139-149€ new, SLI for 300€. Gave you the same performance as the dual gpu GTX295.
Things sure got a lot more expensive over the years.

My problem is that a resistor is damaged and its value cannot be identified, it is located before the cathode of the tl431

Regarding the fan, have you considered repairing it? Personally, I use WD-40 (or equivalent) to clean fan's axis and then some synthetic motor oil or lithium grease for lubrication. It always works for me.

    •  2 роки тому

Yes i considered it. I buy ball bearings from a RC store in sweden, on day shipping.
I lube them if there sleeved.
Worth it on custom fans that you cant buy. Or oldschool fans.
But a new one is 3-4€ so not worth it and modern fans are much better.
This card uses a standard 40x10mm.
Can get a Sunon Maglev for 4-5€ usually, similar bearings to a Noctua at 1/3 the price.
So no a new one is inexpensive enough and will last longer and run quieter.
I also like the fact that a new Sunon ha the same looks as the old once from say a 1999 Mac G4, or the Y.S Tech I recently bougth and put in my Dual Athlon Mp looks just like the once you got with the Alpha PAL coolers for your Pentium3 or Athlon back when.
So new with modern bearings but the looks of retro.

@ Yeah, I understand. But I always try to repair rather than replace, just for fun. It is the essence of retro-hardware hobby for me. Also I like to struggle a bit with retro stuff, just like back then.
