Or find a VERY bouncy horse. I learn sitting trot on the bounciest horse I have ever ridden. And I must say it makes sitting trot on all the other horses a lot easier in comparison
if you would look at what her legs are doing. (most of the time) her legs arent just flopping around like noodles, they are giving aids. look at her heels and calves, they are making contact with the horse. the horse might be lazy and need constant pressure/reminder to keep pace, we have all ridden that kind of horse at least once in our lives :P. so she's not riding the sitting trot badly, she's probably riding the sitting trot how she needs to.
snowbunnycare It’s giving cues, in dressage you should barely see simple cues like that. They’re also allowing the horses suspension to go through both the seat and the ankle.
These aren't cues and this isn't dressage work. She's a wonderful rider but she needs to learn how to keep her legs still and off the horse when it's doing something correctly. Repeatedly, kicking into your horse's sides like that gets you a lazy horse. Not the other way around. Even if she were, you don't kick a horse to go, you slightly increase the pressure with your foot until the horse complies. Again, I'm not hating or insulting anyone. I'm just saying that it's something she should try and fix.
Its_BlueberryMuffin She was giving cues as well as allowing her heels to take the suspension rather than her body. If you watch ANY dressage rider you’ll see their heels move. Rather i’d be slightly or a lot. It depends on the horse. Some horses give more suspension than others.
Indeed, ouch! :/ With the horses I ride most often with, I usually wait a little while after getting the bridle away from behind the ears. Most horses are smart enough to open their mouth to get rid of the bit, haha
Its kind of weird for me... I am able to do sitting trot without stirrups / on bareback but am unable to do it with stirrups..... Any tips for me? Great video btw
Same!!! I will be just fine without stirrups or bareback but when it comes to with stirrups I bounce, I think its because we use our feet to keep us steady not absorbing the shock. Thats my guess
I hate doing sitting trot. Posting might make you more sore afterwards but it hurts my back a lot to be bouncing so much. And my horse has trouble staying in a trot when I am sitting.
Abbey Grace omg I know this used to happen to me all the time! I finally learned how to sit the trot and I hope it helps you! first off it helped me to ride with longer stirrups so I could wrap my legs around the horse to sort of pull myself into the saddle I guess. then sit up straight so that your back doesn't wiggle around which is what caused mine to hurt, I don't know if its the same for you :) I hope this helps, good luck!
I feel you! It hurt my back for awhile too but eventually it got stronger and I was able to hold my back stronger. I’ve always had cue problems in the trot too, riding stirrup-less helped me quite a bit with that.
abbeymakesthings I'd recommand you a little daily workout routine to stretch your back and strengthen your muscles (abs and back). Maybe also work on the flexibilty around the hips, to follow the horse's gait more easily and better absorb the shock. I've been doing it myself to improve my position and it's done wonders. If your back still hurts, you should probably take an appointment to get it checked - maybe a vertebrae moved and needs to be put back in place. O:
omg they use tight reins and bits whips stalls leg braces tight nose bands and spurs this is just plain animal abuse notice when the reins get pulled away the horse puts his head in a normal confortable position

What the hell are you calling "leg braces"? Surely you are not referring to the fleece lined protective boots. "Animal abuse" occurs when a horse is in the "care" of someone who doesn't even know what basic things such as contact and brushing boots are, not when an accomplished professional flats a horse in properly fitting tack.
Derpachu Sir first of all, the horse's head position doesn't change much when she ties up the reins. Secondly, i'd like you to explain to me why you think this horse is in pain. as far as i can tell, this horse isn't showing any signs of distress.
Seriously..? Like stated~ these equestrians are professionals and know what they're doing. Both the viewers and the people in the video don't need to hear uneducated crap from a kid with a cartoon avatar. Maybe you should learn some about equines and equestrianism before you sprout your 'facts'

Id rather have less videos and then they be filled with something useful and something that you do really well and therefore are qualified to give lesseons in. Like all your amazing jump tips and ideas for engaging the horse. . Jumpers arent usually particularly good at sitting the trot and you prove that presumption very nicely here ;) Heather Moffet from enlightened equitation has good videos up here that will show you why some peoples head bob around. Its because they are stiffening their backs trying to sit still instead of absorbing the movement through the hips. So just telling people to keep their head still does nothing for them or the horse. It will just cause something else to bob around, cus the movement is gonna come out somewhere. It also dulls down the horses back movement, stiffening him, making the trot flatter and less engaged..

Arg the removal of the bridle...... Poor guy's teeth getting banged! Can you do a tip of how to properly remove a bridle without banging your horse's teeth?
her legs keep moving because she has to make the horse keep moving because if you dont use your legs to keep the horse moving it will stop in the sitting trot
No, it will not. If the horse is properly trained, it should continue doing a gait until the rider gives the signal to slow down. It would be much harder and much less classier to keep banging on the horse's sides over and over to keep trotting. You do not know what you're talking about.
uhhhhh, no it's not. Your leg is supposed to be in a fixed position, heels down, and not flopping around. There's a difference between having a relaxed leg that is moving up and down and one that has no control.
Would be twice as effective in teaching if the camera would have focused on what he's talking about instead of him talking. Good vid though. thank you!
Tia+Molly It can be bad too, I rode bareback soo much now I find it hard to stay in a saddle properly because it is sooo different. :) It is great in moderation though!
when i first started riding for real, the riding camp taught me how to saddle up and all, but they didnt give clear instructions. apparently, i have done things right form the start :) Now it's just left to master the gallop on big horses since im too big for ponies :) Your videos have helped me alot! :D
When you are videotaping, can you show the rider when you are talking about the tips? It would make it easier to see if you could do the closeups on the rider as opposed to the speaker. Love all the tips! Thanks.
All dressage riders move their ankles like that at each impulsion, its the way dressage has been taught and ridden. Search any professional dressage video and you'll see it. The horses are taught like that. I have a mare who was taught dressage and i use a constant pressure like a hunter and she doesn't get it. Therefore I have to teach her or use the tapping method. Point is, different disciplines have different techniques.
one thing u didnt mention is u must keep ur pelvis/hips opened and in neutral. if ur pelvis is tilted forward (hips closed) arch in the back then its going to be very hard to follow ur horses movement. great video!
Wow we do those exercises at our riding school!!! You can really get a feel for horse! Cantering without reins is always fun, especially trying to stop the horse from going back to the other horses :P
For people saying that she pulled the bridle out of the horses mouth, that wasnt the case it fell out of the horses mouth.. it tapped its teeth okay... but honestly... stop with the hate... half of you arent even into eventing... its a hard thing to do.. like i rein n barrel race n thats hard... w.e
I actually prefer sitting trot I hate posting. However I have a problem losing my outside stirrup. Honestly I am more comftorable without stirrups and when I do lose one it doesn't mess me up. I can trot canter and jump without them. My outside leg I think is shorter as the stirrup always jiggles out from my foot while the other is perfect. I tried going up a notch in the problem leg but it's to short. It also makes posting miserable as I'm uneven.
Oops should have included my outside leg when I'm going clockwise around the ring. I've been reading people with this problem have one leg with more muscle. i still prefer a sitting trot and even more on a gaited horse
+fernando torrera you need too place a hole between the holes n notch it up there... stirrup lengths are hard to adjust but once you find it you wont look back
I love your videos!!! So often we talk about riding with lightness but most people are so heavy and serious. You must have many happy horses - lightness starts with the person - you are awesome±!!!!
This is the first time I have ever commented on a video. Firstly I agree with you all on your comments about the lunge rein and the girl taking the bridle off, not very good. Secondly her sitting trot is far too stiff she looks very uncomfortable, probably the reason the camera is on him talking. Next, surely the point of being on the lunge is that the person on the ground has control of the horse so the rider can work on his/her position, she has to keep pushing him into trot, what's the point of being on the lunge? Just my opinions :)
Kenny Fraser BECAUSE IF THE HORSE CAN LUNGE UR NT SUPPOSED TO HAVE ONE EXPECIALLY IF THERES A RIDER!!!!!!!! LUNGE WHIPS ARE ACCULTY LESS HELP FULL NOW GET A FREAKEN LIFE
That comment made no "freakin" sense in relation to mine. I was commenting on why to lunge with a rider and why she had to keep pushing. Also, you sound like a goddamned hillbilly because you can't spell or structure sentences properly. Also, you keep commenting on other people's comments just to disagree/ antagonize. Even calling someone else a bully no less. Wow.
countrygirl18 and finally, I'm a professional horse trainer, and a professional riding instructor among many other things ( not an angry 12 year old) who has been working with horses for more years than you've even been alive a few times over. You don't know wtf you're talking about, and people like you (who think that they do) actually being charge of a horse's well being (I doubt that you ever really are) make me cringe.
Got any ideas for a paraplegic who has to do a sitting trot and cannot use their legs for ANYTHING (like gripping)? I have a huge problem with leaning forward as soon as I begin bouncing (as I bounce side to side and where ever my body takes me). I end up holding onto the saddle for support. (I ride with a leader when I trot)... and sometimes a sidewalker or two. I have no confidence whatsoever holding my reins due to the fact I bounce so much.
Wow if you guys take your bridles off like that every time, soon enough your horse's front teeth are going to be knackered! Have some respect for them! I too think her sitting trot is not that brill, loads of leg movement-not very clean...
Please, do yourself a favor and read a dictionary and go to a couple of 3 day eventing shows. Im a hunter and i know more about what dressage is then u will probable ever understand. My barns old manager was a dressage rider i think i know what im talking about so bye. Bish
haha it is favour...I've worked alongside champion lusitano's and their riders and owner. I understand how dressage works, and what the aim of it is, so I understand fine, thanks. Not quite sure why I need to read a dictionary though, it isn't me who's not capitalizing their "I's" and abbreviating "you" or missing apostrophe's...
I don't know how people learn riding in other countries, but in Germany we learn that from the beginning on... I've also learned to walk, trot and canter without stirrups pretty fast. I even think riding without stirrups is better and easier; with stirrups, I always tend to pull up my knees. Without stirrups, my legs stay way better on the horse's body and that's also how I learned to actually sit in the saddle and not always putting weight onto the stirrups to make it easier for me.
The only thing I learned in Germany when I was riding is how to do rollkur and make your horse miserable by showing who is boss and continuously kicking, hitting and yanking on the bit. The things you described I learned them in Hungary
This isn't about the sitting trot, but I have a problem with my cantering. I can get a good seat for a couple of seconds and then I starting bouncing. My legs are really good when it comes to it, but my hips and core don't. How would you do to help you from bouncing so much? ( I also lean too forward)
I have the same issue. it's just building up the muscle to hold yourself in the saddle. Riding without stirrups helps. And also, if your horse has a strung out canter, it can help if you try and help your horse engaged from the hind end, because if he/she is heavy on the forehand, it can be less comfortable :)
your heel helps a lot with that! try cantering without stirrups! its so natural. then try it with the stirrups. the more weight in your heel, the better.
I can imagine our riding instructors saying "You pay to have have lessons from a qualified instructor. If you think you know more by watching youtube vids then find another establishment to ride in". Except I know they wouldn't say that lol!
Love all your vids! :) Wish I lived closer to your barn even in the same state so could train with SchrammEquestrian!!! Can you guys do a video with tips about keeping your leg still especially over fences?
you guys should play starstable it's the best game ever and animal jam so i like starstable better but i play animal jam more and i don't no why hehehe i can't stop saying hehehe lol XD
I wouldn't put the arms behind the back. It is making her back hollow and the chest come out too much and causes her whole back to become rigid. Why not have the arms in the usual position just without holding the reins. That would get people to practice this in the most functional way. I don't agree with the notion of gripping from the lower legs and i don't think you guys do yourself as certainly the rider is not doing it. The legs are pretty fluttery.
I'm riding a really uneven bouncy horse and her trot is the most uncomfortable thing in the entire world. When im trying to transition to canter I cant get my sit. I just bounce around. This is annoying because then I cant transition. Please anyone have any tips it would really help
my friend taught me to relax my lower back and with the other riding things with back straight shoulders square and keep your hands under control i can do it.
I can't say I agree with the bit thing, but the rest of the video was nice! My lesson pony opens her mouth when she feels he bit start to come down, so I don't bump her teeth. But in some cases, she decides that herb it tastes delicious and she never wants to let It go.
She's constantly giving pony club taps. Is it actually nessecary? If the horse actually needed moving forward then she should've just kicked hard and squeezed. x
The way that girl dropped that bridle off her horse made me cringe! Ouch! That lunge line looped in your hand isn't a good example. The camera person needs to show the girl on the horse not you talking. Beautiful horse, beautiful rider.
Okay, I know these guys are professionals (I think) but what was up with him looping the lunge line in his hand? Um, pretty sure that's kind of a general no no... There is a certain way you can wrap lines to keep them off the ground and clean but I didn't see him doing that
I go about once every week and a half and I've only just started riding I wanna learn fast so I can let my "tutors" 32 year old horse rest, However her sixteen years Patch is kind of rambunctious ;-;
Tbh the horse that taught me how to properly sit is a little thoroughbred mare at my riding school, with the worst balance I've ever seen in a horse (she's still a very good girl and one of the funniest horses to ride at my school). Since she tends to be clumsy, the rider has to mind their position to not add a difficulty for her. Plus, having a good position helps her keep a better balance too! Sooo... That's really how I learned how to properly sit. It's still not perfect, but it's much better than before - once you can properly sit on a horse like this mare, you can basically sit on _any horse_ tbh.
I am like a super beginner, I only just started horse riding and I am already doing trotting... I have no idea how to though, the main thing is me trying to shorten my reins... They are always to short or to long... I cant get them perfect... Every time I try to trot the horse goes crazy and bucks... My trainer says its me and my reins... But I still need some good help :(
I'm grateful for how damn patient school horses are every day. I know that I thumped around like a sack of potatoes for about 6 months before I could sit the trot acceptably, it was when my trainer let me use no stirrups. Is anyone else 300% better at sitting the trot with no stirrups? I find it so much easier
Do not pull your toes up when without stirrups. The leg should be so relaxed the foot falls naturally to a comfortable position. A good rider needs to have a neutral leg when not asking for something. Riders who are trained this way have difficulty not inadvertently driving the horse with their legs.
When I was 14 years old, my parents took me to my training for the very first time, well I almost fell of with the trotting but I was on a gentle horse her name was Hope and she has beautiful blue eyes and my trotting was on a western saddle and I was getting to it. But when we went by her mother she wanted to eat haha cutie but when I was trotting I was no moving my butt. Whoops my fult I love that horse.
I found this very frustrating because the camera was following him talking and missing the horse to demonstrate what we need to see. Missing the whole point, really...
This is my first time viewing this channel and I found myself getting annoyed when they removed the stirrups to 'show' us how to sit the trot properly but kept the camera on him and not on the rider and the horse. They did bring the camera to the horse and rider briefly but then went right back to the man. Will watch a few other videos before deciding if I want to remain a subscriber or not. I'm more of a visual learner, so his talking would have been better for me if the camera was on the horse and rider while he talked in the background.
I need to work on this because I always feel like I'm hurting my horse. I feel so bad because he's so patient and I'm this impatient idiot...😂
Sameeeee😂
Same, I ride this super patient schooly a lot and he's a dream but then when I try it with my own (semi-leased) he is over with me in a second xD
I do as well because my horse trot is so loud i cant even sit

would help to have the camera focus on the rider as Dom is speaking rather than just on Dom.
Tip of the day ... when you take your horses bridle off, first make sure you don't take his teeth out with the bit. Appalling.
I"m not too keen on getting my bridle wet where it holds the bit on every day...../
Yeah seriously!! That noise made me cringe! Hold the bridle up and let them know so that they don't get their teeth bumped! Ouch!

Tia+Molly Okay, She should ride bareback every once in a while, it would help her seat. :)
It would! Bareback and stirrup-less work is amazing, it works wonders!
Thanks.
Bouncing around up there like a sack of potato’s
Me 😂😂
All dressage riders move their ankles like that at each impulsion, its the way dressage has been taught and ridden. Search any professional dressage video and you'll see it. The horses are taught like that. I have a mare who was taught dressage and i use a constant pressure like a hunter and she doesn't get it. Therefore I have to teach her or use the tapping method. Point is, different disciplines have different techniques.
I pretend like in glued to the saddle, and presto, sitting trot :)
Yeah uh nah I am not doing the exercises I have a crazy 5 year old mare who has only been broken in for 2 years.
one thing u didnt mention is u must keep ur pelvis/hips opened and in neutral. if ur pelvis is tilted forward (hips closed) arch in the back then its going to be very hard to follow ur horses movement. great video!
whipping off the bridle like that so rough and quick was not nice. the bit clanked against the horses teeth. should be gently.
i fr gotta learn this cus i look so stupid in the horse riding clip since everyone looks so elegant and i look like a damn spring 😭
I can imagine my trainer now yelling at us that our legs are so bad and having us do 10 mins of stirrup-less sitting trots. Yowch.
Wow we do those exercises at our riding school!!! You can really get a feel for horse! Cantering without reins is always fun, especially trying to stop the horse from going back to the other horses :P
For people saying that she pulled the bridle out of the horses mouth, that wasnt the case it fell out of the horses mouth.. it tapped its teeth okay... but honestly... stop with the hate... half of you arent even into eventing... its a hard thing to do.. like i rein n barrel race n thats hard... w.e
I felt we didn’t need the man in camera, but we wanted to watch the movement of the lady. And If it is slow motion, it would be much better.
the one reason i don't move up is becausae i can't SIT THE TROT
I actually have horse lessons and my teacher literally sent this to me
* I feel like a failure
That intro was so funny I had no choice but to watch! I do need help with sitting the trot.
+fernando torrera you shouldn't always have the same outsideleg. It should change all the time
Oops should have included my outside leg when I'm going clockwise around the ring. I've been reading people with this problem have one leg with more muscle. i still prefer a sitting trot and even more on a gaited horse
+fernando torrera you need too place a hole between the holes n notch it up there... stirrup lengths are hard to adjust but once you find it you wont look back
Same!! Its so much easier without stirrups!!!
Love these videos but at 4:28 the holding of that lunge line... grrrrr
Interesting. I have a hard time with my sitting trot WITH my irons. I wish somebody could explain that.
Maybe your stirrups are too short or too long
I love your videos!!! So often we talk about riding with lightness but most people are so heavy and serious. You must have many happy horses - lightness starts with the person - you are awesome±!!!!
my sister has a horse i might get one:D BUT um i might not D: oh no!!!!
Uh oh Pony Club would frown upon the loops with your lounge line! ;)
Just my opinions :)
teaching riders to balance without hanging onto poor horses face. He also didn't have a longe whip.
Wow.
Proper punctuation also helps to add weight to your opinion. Not that I would even bother at this point if I were you.
countrygirl18 and finally, I'm a professional horse trainer, and a professional riding instructor among many other things ( not an angry 12 year old) who has been working with horses for more years than you've even been alive a few times over. You don't know wtf you're talking about, and people like you (who think that they do) actually being charge of a horse's well being (I doubt that you ever really are) make me cringe.
May I ask for a request on how to balance on a bareback trot?
Its not an eq class its dressage they are judging how fluid the horse moves not what the riders leg looks like
No, they're telling you how to improve your sitting trot-so actually, yes, they kind of are...
Uhm its youtube not english class thankyou very much lol i dont need to fight with a low life
My but keeps smacking the saddle lauding and I'm doing it but it's loud is it normal?
No
This helped me a lot! Thanks for the tips :-)
Same
The only thing I learned in Germany when I was riding is how to do rollkur and make your horse miserable by showing who is boss and continuously kicking, hitting and yanking on the bit. The things you described I learned them in Hungary
To up the challenge "How to improve your Sitting Trot on a shetland pony before the canter"
I'm only speaking from an instructors POV.
......like a sack of potatoes 😂😂😂😂😂😂
Love all your vids! :) Wish I lived closer to your barn even in the same state so could train with SchrammEquestrian!!! Can you guys do a video with tips about keeping your leg still especially over fences?
you guys should play starstable it's the best game ever and animal jam so i like starstable better but i play animal jam more and i don't no why hehehe i can't stop saying hehehe lol XD
i play starstable
Growler AJ yes thank you
also if you follow your horse's movement with your hip and let your hips loose it helps a little.
Haha this is so funny she is actually pretty bad at doing sitting trot
She has a good seat though, its mainly her leg
she needs to keep her feet still
I wouldn't put the arms behind the back. The legs are pretty fluttery.
great quality and quite adorable!
and that horse. stunning!
I'm riding a really uneven bouncy horse and her trot is the most uncomfortable thing in the entire world. When im trying to transition to canter I cant get my sit. I just bounce around. This is annoying because then I cant transition. Please anyone have any tips it would really help
which horse breed is the horse
Beautiful horse! whats its name??
Sunny AJ
and i would really like it if you would just get to the point
my friend taught me to relax my lower back and with the other riding things with back straight shoulders square and keep your hands under control i can do it.
Such... A.... Skinny.... Neck
I can't say I agree with the bit thing, but the rest of the video was nice! My lesson pony opens her mouth when she feels he bit start to come down, so I don't bump her teeth. But in some cases, she decides that herb it tastes delicious and she never wants to let It go.
First bit was hilarious hehe
Can you demonstrate on a friesian with a bouncy trot? I feel like mine is impossible to sit.
Why do I find standing in my stirrups so hard?? 😂 I must be so unfit haha
Are you stirrups too long? I have this problem because I'm too short and the highest hole on the stirrups is still too low XD
+Nikki B. I find it much easier now, as they were too long! Thank you XD
I love your intro some day I want to be able to ride like you gyes
I'm 9 and it's very hard for me but luckily my mule has a smooth trot😆😊😁🐴🐴
Do you ride a donkey?
male?
+David G. its a mule guys not a donkey xD. Mule=Mix of horse and donkey
Dude, you're holding the longe (sorry i dont know if its the word in english haha) wrong....
There is a certain way you can wrap lines to keep them off the ground and clean but I didn't see him doing that
I go about once every week and a half and I've only just started riding I wanna learn fast so I can let my "tutors" 32 year old horse rest, However her sixteen years Patch is kind of rambunctious ;-;
I'm in Cochranville so I started like, freaking out...having a complete brain blank, who is he??!!.,
I am like a super beginner, I only just started horse riding and I am already doing trotting...
God dammit I know the song to the Intro and I cant remember the name of it. Its bugging me
Do not pull your toes up when without stirrups. The leg should be so relaxed the foot falls naturally to a comfortable position. A good rider needs to have a neutral leg when not asking for something. Riders who are trained this way have difficulty not inadvertently driving the horse with their legs.
Nice video, just PLEASE correct the way you are holding the lunge line, -the potential crushing of your left hand is not pretty.
My horse has the BOUNCEST trot i've ever seen. So HARD to sit unless she slows it down to like an western equitation trot... is that normal?
Hhhahahahahah that what m looking for, to prevent hip and back injuries me and horse
Missing the whole point, really...
my old trainer used to make me do lunge line lessons with no stirrups or reins for months at a time, it was torture but it helped so much
Can you do one like this only with galloping? I am having a hard time with that.....
Please make one it would be so helpful!!!
This was great and I liked it except when the bridle dropped out onto the horses teeth in the bit washing tip part = YOWCHY!!
You can also improve sitting trot by riding bareback. After awhile you just learn to go with the horse or you fall off.
