Fun fact about the waterfall, the reason it takes 3 minutes for it to open is that’s the amount of time it takes for a cup of instant ramen to cook. It’s a game sanctioned snack break. This is all well and good in Japan where a 3 minute timer is ubiquitous with instant noodles (and is referenced in Undertake with the “instant” noodles that take forever or use and don’t even do much), but is completely lost on a Western audience.

Really awesome seeing a younger dude enjoying my fav game from my childhood. I'm almost 40 now and this game was basically my comfort food of my childhood. In 1994 i had to move from Missouri to Denver and earthbound was my comfort game growing up for years. Great video. I'll prob fire up a new save file on the game tonight. Thanks :)
I've beaten the game around 90 times now and you're not wrong. That Magicant part is an awful slog at the end of the game. Too many battles before a boss thats too hard to solo honestly. You didn't mention it but that's where a counterfeit game bricks. The local grocery store in Columbia Missouri was renting a counterfeit copy so my first run though ended there until i bought my own copy.
Fun fact! You can visit Lier X. Agerate right after Buzz-Buzz's death, and it turns out he's NOT a creep! He's actually just an eccentric signmaker/treasure hunter. And oh boy, he found something REAL interesting this time! In the big ol' cave system he dug out under his house... ...he found a *beautiful gold statue.* Anyway suffer through MOTHER 1 next
@@Sprinklespark08 Even then, Once you get Teleport you can spam it in the overworld to get through things like the swamp and Mt. Itoi plateau easily with far less encounters. PSI Stones are also busted as all hell as long as you don't roll the 1/8th chance of them breaking. Random encounters aren't as annoying on NES and GBA at least because you can run in the overworld unlike the original Famicom version, and cranking the text speed up helps a lot too. That's what's nice about M1/EBB. It gives you the tools to make the game more enjoyable. But yeah, a bit more patience is required for the first game. I wish more people would check it out, it's my favorite of the trilogy. It's the shortest and most replayable too (imo.) Especially if anybody plays on an emulator and uses fast forward because grinding annoys them. Sorry for the rant lol, I just wanted to chime in with my thoughts too.
I’m a pretty similar age to you and have been on UA-cam for about as long as I can remember. This long form style of content is something I am so nostalgic for, diving deep into games with both comedy and a true understanding for the game. Surprisingly, Mother 1 and 3 are emotional games. 2 is more silly that’s for sure, tho its absurdity is just surface level compared to what it’s got under the surface. If you play Mother 3, you will appreciate Lucas hundreds times more than you already do. The Subspace Emissary does him so dirty and he is actually such an awesome and interesting character. Fair warning though, Mother 3 is really emotionally intense and will rip your heart out, spit on it, and grind it into the dirt.

This game is filled with real world references which were a big deal at the time but are largly forgotten. So here is a relevant Real Life Lore Dump: 7:00 - The fight against the cops is a reference to the police beating of Rodney King in 1991. Where a group of cops beat the ever loving hell out of an unarmed man and inspired a series of riots. My how times have changed. 9:10 - This is based on an actual cult in Japan called Aum Shinrikyo that is still active today. They are responsible for a number of terrorist attacks across Japan including a Sarin gas attack that hit the Tokyo subway. The head of Nintendo of America at the time was supposed to be in the subway that morning but he randomly decided to take a taxi that morning. He was in Japan at the time to discus the translation of Earthbound among other things. 12:00 - The Run Away 5 are a reference to the movie The Blues Brothers. They are one of countless refences and straight up ripoffs of music and pop-culture. These references are part of the reason this series is nearly impossible to translate and bring to the US. The only thing keeping it from being sued into oblivion is how relatively unknown the series is.
Oh also I forgot. 42:00 - You're literally aborting a fetus. The cave you enter has a... certain shape... you then walk up some guts to the where Gygas is... and again... a certain shape.... And again... at 43:21 Gygas has a certain shape. You went back in time to where Gygas is most vulnerable and kill him as a fetus.

Re: Fly Honey - Yeah, there's a reason this game was shipped with the strategy guide. Those who grew up playing it originally knew all the cryptic bullshit. Yes, there's enough in-game info to figure it out, but it definitely takes some thinking.
Earthbound's finale has only one flaw: that it inspired hundreds of other quirky RPGs to shoehorn a "your stats and powers are now useless, use the power of friendship to truly defeat the final boss" moment in the final battle. Earthbound did it right, 90% of all the other games did not.
100% correct in your conclusion. Earthbound does not give a shit about your opinion. It's a weird game and it thrives on its bizarre setting and story elements. In Threed you fight a possessed circus tent for a boss fight, and it's in retrospect that you realize how silly an encounter it was. As AVGN put it, "dude, I'm fighting a tent!"
I think you're way too young to understand what gaming felt like in the 90s. I'm double your age and I can tell you that gaming used to be this weird, fun and unapologetic. The 90s were driven by tongue-in check and toilet humor but also breaking limitations and doing new stuff. The 2020ies are a regression, they don't add anything but "wokeness", which is a toxic left-wing behavior movement and newer blockbuster games also reflect this with political correctness, average looking women and homogenizations left and right. Older games were just meant to be fun, harmless stories told with the heart. The last big game which achieved this was Undertale, which you might know, is a direct homage to Earthbound and how Toby loved the series.

Another correction - there's a guy in Onett at the top of the mountain that originally dug up the statue, you can talk to him in the first chapter and see the statue before it ends up in Happy Happy village. In fact Pokey probably brought it TO Carpainter.
I wouldn't say The Mother series is a "rotting corpse" like F-zero, but more like retired because unlike F-zero where it's never been confirmed or denied that the series is finished. Itoi has made it clear that Mother 3 is the last game in the series and the final conclusion of the main story line. Just like how some book series will just end after the author feels the story has reached it's conclusion.

For me, ness was basicly the "character ive seen but dont wanna use in the real game" especially becuase of all the "pk-fire" clips. then when i played earthbound for the first time my whole team got wiped out by paulas pray during pokeys final fight (slammin track ngl) by making us all cry and sick....just wow.

7:00 - The fight against the cops is a reference to the police beating of Rodney King in 1991. Where a group of cops beat the ever loving hell out of an unarmed man and inspired a series of riots. My how times have changed.
9:10 - This is based on an actual cult in Japan called Aum Shinrikyo that is still active today. They are responsible for a number of terrorist attacks across Japan including a Sarin gas attack that hit the Tokyo subway. The head of Nintendo of America at the time was supposed to be in the subway that morning but he randomly decided to take a taxi that morning. He was in Japan at the time to discus the translation of Earthbound among other things.
12:00 - The Run Away 5 are a reference to the movie The Blues Brothers. They are one of countless refences and straight up ripoffs of music and pop-culture. These references are part of the reason this series is nearly impossible to translate and bring to the US. The only thing keeping it from being sued into oblivion is how relatively unknown the series is.
Oh also I forgot. 42:00 - You're literally aborting a fetus. The cave you enter has a... certain shape... you then walk up some guts to the where Gygas is... and again... a certain shape.... And again... at 43:21 Gygas has a certain shape. You went back in time to where Gygas is most vulnerable and kill him as a fetus.

Earthbound's finale has only one flaw: that it inspired hundreds of other quirky RPGs to shoehorn a "your stats and powers are now useless, use the power of friendship to truly defeat the final boss" moment in the final battle. Earthbound did it right, 90% of all the other games did not.
100% correct in your conclusion. Earthbound does not give a shit about your opinion. It's a weird game and it thrives on its bizarre setting and story elements. In Threed you fight a possessed circus tent for a boss fight, and it's in retrospect that you realize how silly an encounter it was. As AVGN put it, "dude, I'm fighting a tent!"
I think you're way too young to understand what gaming felt like in the 90s. I'm double your age and I can tell you that gaming used to be this weird, fun and unapologetic. The 90s were driven by tongue-in check and toilet humor but also breaking limitations and doing new stuff. The 2020ies are a regression, they don't add anything but "wokeness", which is a toxic left-wing behavior movement and newer blockbuster games also reflect this with political correctness, average looking women and homogenizations left and right. Older games were just meant to be fun, harmless stories told with the heart. The last big game which achieved this was Undertale, which you might know, is a direct homage to Earthbound and how Toby loved the series.

Another correction - there's a guy in Onett at the top of the mountain that originally dug up the statue, you can talk to him in the first chapter and see the statue before it ends up in Happy Happy village. In fact Pokey probably brought it TO Carpainter.
I wouldn't say The Mother series is a "rotting corpse" like F-zero, but more like retired because unlike F-zero where it's never been confirmed or denied that the series is finished. Itoi has made it clear that Mother 3 is the last game in the series and the final conclusion of the main story line. Just like how some book series will just end after the author feels the story has reached it's conclusion.
