Weirdly enough, I don’t think it could be a Sonic reference, despite Dr. Eggman/Robotnik existing back then. He was primarily referred to as Robotnik, though he was supposedly given the name Eggman in Japan, rather than it being an American localization thing. Just saying, “Eggman” sounds pretty Western/English. Or both Sonic and Earthbound took inspiration from The Beatles at roughly the same time.

There is no song in the _EarthBound_ soundtrack called "But Somethin', Will Ya". That's a fan title someone came up with when creating titles for the SPC rip of the game's soundtrack. The same piece of music was called "Humoresque of a Little Dog" on one of the albums that came after the release of the first _Mother_ game. That is the correct title or at least closer to the title for the song within _EarthBound._
I feel like so long as the colloquial name is as recognizable as the correct name it isn’t super offensive. You do hear the song in the shops, and the made up title is to the vibe of that setting.
Loving the resurgence of EarthBound stuff lately, perhaps in celebration of Mother 2's 30th anniversary. It's still one of my favorite games of all time. So crazy that I keep hearing about new stuff from this game that I've never discovered before! Bless you, Iwata.
Awesome video! One thing though, I think the reason the early screenshots look wider is because they were stretched to 4:3, while your gameplay uses 8:7, which is the AR of the SNES when using square pixels (5:59 is a good example).
0:27 That might be due to how a LOT of late 80s/early 90s games (most prominently, arcade games and early Mega Drive/SNES games) always went for a desaturated look. Games like Ghouls n Ghosts (arcade), Haunted Castle, Final Fantasy 4, Phantasy Star 2, Super Mario World, etc
I like to think that the coffee and tea scenes in this game are examples of what a "video drug" is. Just the trippy moving backgrounds and trippy music along with some relaxing/thoughtful messaging.
22:44 I’m surprised no one has ever made this connection, but the term “video drug” has been used by developers to refer to the backgrounds in the game. Perhaps this is a vestigial debug tool that was dummied out?
I'm not sure if anyone else mentioned it, but the character named Shige-chan is more than likely a reference to Shigesato Itoi himself. He worked as a miner for a while doing excavations and the sprite even looks a bit like him.
A lot of Prototype localization stuff is leftover on the Player's Guide. Like for example PSI Rockin' being called Drill and Power and Talah Rama being Tarah Rama by mistake.
Fascinating info here! I really wish some of those scrapped ideas could have made it into the final game, and I'm very curious as to what Fiverent would have been like. I must assume that most of the scrapped content was do to cartridge limitations. If the game was ever remade, I'd love to see it be more like the original vision of the game with that stuff finally included.
35:57 I just thought of something. Ness had his hands inside his pant pockets all along, but was misinterpreted as having them held in front of him, giving birth to his weird pose seen in official artwork and rendes like in Brawl. No wonder the pose feels so weird when recreated. It's bc Ness is not posing; he just has his hands in his pockets
34:16 A RADIO TOWER? LOBSTER WITH A PISTOL???? UFO STARMAN??? WE WERE SO ROBBED (on a serious note, wish we could see sprite redemption of those enemies)
I imagine the devs called George "Shige-Chan" because the desert mine part of the game is based on a real-life event in which Shigesato Itoi participated in a televised expedition to mine for buried gold.
I just realized the Prototype version of the Tenda villagers almost look identical to what the Bunny Statues were made into, just adjusted to fit the theming more. Same black body and beady eyes.
Video relaxant may be a reference to nitrates or "poppers" which people would inhale for a rush. When they were banned and classified as a drug companies still sold them under the name "videohead cleaner" because one of its uses was for cleaning your VCRs tape reader when it became dirty.
When you're going over the names around 28 minutes in, most of the women are named after Twin Peaks characters. Lucy, Donna, Catherine, Audrey, and Josie. Because the letters L and R when translating Japanese are weird, I'm gonna go out on a limb & say Sherry was supposed to be Shelly, another Twin Peaks character
@37:56 Does anyone else think that "Twin Pigs Village" is supposed to be a reference to Twin Peaks? The names sound similar and according to WikiBound, they meet a detective there who is trying to solve a mystery about the town. Kinda cool if true!
22:52 apparently, "viceo drugs" is a Japanese term referring to the act of spacing out while staring at automatically generated visualisations from early software media players.
First edit: the first mother game I played was mother 3 and I didn't know anything about the the series and I thought this game was about raising two twins and then I was flabbergasted dumbfounded when hinawa passed away and then after I finished the game I titled it as my favorite game forever
The PSI powers levels are Greek letters. So a is Alpha, b is beta, y is Gamma, E is Sigma, etc. My guess about the Giygas Debug menu trick is it was a place holder for the infamous save file deletion copy protection method before finalizing that. For the Ness's Mom sitting sprite, they might have planned for her to be sitting at the table. I think there is a rethemed version of Strong in Summers called the Overzealous Cop. I am guessing the lizard could be a member of the Tenda tribe. Outside of the dinos in Lost Underworld, those are probably the only NPCs that look like lizards.
Was actually using UA-cam's "A/B testing" feature that lets you run 3 at the same time! You must've seen one of the other two. It's set on this one now. :)
I think it makes a lot more sense to suggest that Everdred was going to die and be seen as a ghost, than to suggest that he was going to be a playable character, when there is nothing else to suggest that he was ever going to be playable.
I'm so mad they cut the "Weakest Man Of Twoson" his entire interaction is so funny
