- In June 1884, a group of about 680 immigrants from China arrived in Jamaica. The colonial government made all efforts to appease landowners by recruiting Chinese laborers to replace Jamaicans who no longer wanted to work on plantations after emancipation. Years later, the same colonial government made all efforts to restrict Chinese relatives from entering Jamaica to appease store owners who were intimidated by competing with Chinese shop owners.
