What Does The High China Investments In The Caribbean Mean?

Поділитися
Вставка
  • Опубліковано 3 лют 2023
  • What do you think of the China-Caribbean relationship and the huge investments China is making in the Caribbean which will lead to huge China's influence in the region?
As the world’s second-largest economy by nominal GDP, totaling around USD18.32 trillion the past year, and the world’s largest economy since 2016 when measured by PPP - Purchasing Power Parity - China is a country that witnessed very rapid economic growth in the past decades. The two main factors explaining such are its rapid productivity growth and large-scale capital investment, financed by substantial domestic savings and foreign investments, too.
In 2022, China accounted for 18.6% of the global economy in terms of PPP. According to IMF - the International Monetary Fund - China is already the world’s largest economy, over 20% larger than the United States economy which used to be considered the top one globally.
Nowadays, China has foreign investments basically in every continent. Its economic superpower is unparalleled and constantly growing.
In the past years, especially in the 2005-2022 period, China has invested billions of USD in the Caribbean. This happened while signing tax and trade deals in several Caribbean countries. Is this to seize the region out of the West’s sphere of influence and bring it under the sway of Beijing?

The Caribbean has a purpose for the West, it has been to build up them and their economy so they can live good. Caribbean people will let in a US company which will pollute just the same way (LOOK at ALCOA in Jamaica for example) and then the U.S. company will bring in the military if the local government dare to shut down or interfere in their operations or profits. (Look at Chiquita Banana's track record in Central America). Or seizing the assets of Venezuela's Citgo in the USA.

Its a shame that people still think that the hunger, poverty, lack of freedom that the cuban people suffer is due to the so called "sanctions" imposed by the USA. Cuba has relations with plenty of countries around the world. The USA sells plenty of food and medicines to Cuba. So what sanctions are you talking about? Its the evil communist system imposed to the cuban people which has caused the disaster they suffer. The inept communist system always make anyone else liable for their failures.

Agree. I grew up among them in Jamaica, went to school and eat with them. They came to Jamaica poor, riding donkeys according to my mother, they were all over the countryside trying to make a living. They were the shop keepers who sold us our groceries. The Chinese have a long history with Jamaica. Jamaica as we know is a large mountainous country, it would be impossible for Jamaica to build the highways that the Chinese are building, Jamaica is 1-3 hours flight from the US however the US has never sought to sit at the table and have honest negotiations with Jamaica. The agenda is always one sided. God has created us and gave us this beautiful world, not for us to control and destroy each other for personal gain, but to help each other up. Because China and Cuba are communist, it doesn’t mean we should condemn and destroy them , it’s their ideology. Almost everything in the US is made in China, why? Why has the government allowed all the manufacturers here in the US to outsource the jobs? Because trade unions proliferated the US allowing the poor to rise to middle class status; better wages, health insurance, vacation , holiday , sick time, pensions and job protections, whereby there must be reasonable cause to dismiss. America must take pages out of the books of China, a country which years ago was under colonial rule but rose above it to become a powerful nation, sit at the table and have dialogue whereby each country presents it’s wishes, the pros and cons are negotiated and mutual agreements are formed. Everyone could work together for common good and not sanctions and alienation. The world is rapidly changing, whereby the so called “Shit house nations “ are rising. I guess nothing remains constant.

Developing nations need infrastructure and investments to progress. The soft loans from China is devoid of political and sovereign conditions unlike the IMF and World Bank. In the aftermath of covid 19 with the western world's economy taking a dive and even a recession on the horizon, Caribbean nations especially need the boost to their economies. The BRI system is a win win situation for all nations involved in the long run as China sees fit to invest their surplus dollars in the BRI member countries infrastructure as opposed to buying US treasuries and bonds which they have done after the 08 financial crash keeping the US and EU economy ticking over. Infrastructure is an essential part of a developing nation, it creates growth and efficiency in the market place. The workers from China has the expertize and experience to ensure that the project is finished on a timely basis and to ensure that the project has been built to international standards. In addition, by managing the projects exclusively they are ensuring that no opportunity of corruption from third parties can materialize. Institutional corruption is a cancer for development and growth for any nation. Local politicians should take an example of china's growth and progress with a single minded approach to the task of a developing and progressive nation.

There is a distinct positive and negative duality to this development. On the one hand, this means obvious development for the Caribbean countries, particularly the sovereign ones that really needed the boost to make their economies grow. After all, we all want to live happily and healthily. On the other hand, we do not want them to become indebted to China in a way that hinders or slows down the Caribbean over a long period of time; or in worst case scenario gets taken over completely by them. However, I think the Caribbean is well educated enough to know the risks of making major deals like this, enough to know what they are getting into, enough that they should be able to use this to stand on their own two feet for the long run. Besides, which other powerful country is gonna come along and help out in a major way? The Caribbean needs to be smart and accept as much help as they realistically need to make their economies blossom, while ensuring that they do not get negatively overcome by powerful international influences; whether it be from China, the United States or elsewhere.

Joining with China in a power move is not wrong. The more nations that join in, the better it is for change. If Europeans don't change their ways they will ultimately find themselves isolated in every way. Jamaica and all developing nations should not only be concerned with what China can help them with but what they can do to break western dominance. Remember where China was just 40 or 50 years ago. In general developing countries don’t have a lot of money or skilled people to build the infrastructure they need (schools, hospitals, roads, bridges, ports, etc). But what they have are resources. So instead of the country trying to build the infrastructure with money or expertise they don’t have and taking heavy loans from IMF and becoming more indebted, China will build the infrastructure in exchange for resources..like a bartering system. In the past these countries may have gotten loans or grants from the west to build these infrastructure but the money disappears either through mismanagement or corruption. This method from China, in managing the project from start to finish ensures the project is delivered and the people get what they need instead of the money being given and then disappearing.

About a decade ago, China ran out of productive infrastructure projects inside of China for their many construction firms (altho' they continued to foolishly build ghost cities and infrastructure to nowhere within China). They had spent the previous three decades building up the useful infrastructure in China. Belt and Road was the solution as now Chinese firms had plenty of productive work outside of China.
Hard to say what China's overall strategy above that would be. It certainly will promote future trade partners. So far, we don't see China doing anything like building military bases or acquiring vast swaths of land in the region.
The US had the opportunity to do projects like these, but never did. The US has always been more interested in building military bases and one sided corporate relationships with the Carribean and Latin America nations.
The end result is that China is building much needed infrastructure in mutually beneficial deals - at the moment. If it stays that way, good-good. It is welcome investment. Unclear if there is a hidden agenda towards global hegemony as, if there is, it hasn't manifested itself yet.

WHEN I HEARD ABOUT THE PORT THAT WAS TO BE DEVELOPED BY CHINA IN JAMAICA - I WAS VERY SCEPTICAL DUE TO MY ABSOLUTE IGNORANCE - WHICH IS DUE TO THE FACT THAT - ALTHOUGH

THAT THE CHINESE MUST HAVE BEEN IN JAMAICA BEFORE I WAS BORN -

Many people thinks China investment in their country is a blessing or good. It's not good as it looks, China is loaning the Gov't soft loans for infrastructure and then smart the government by providing their company to do the work which the loan for and also provide the man power for the project, which means China is getting three bite on the cherry. The country have to pay back the loan, pay interest on the loan and Chinese personnel work on the project and get payed from the loan. So it means China getting back three times from one loan. It's happening presently in the Caribbean and Guyana. In Guyana the Government contracted a Chinese company to build a new super factory in Skeldon in Berbice and the Chinese did a bad job, most of the cane juice was going to the sea, rather than collected to make sugar. Then the Guyana Gov't had to contracted another company to rectify the problem. Another project the Chinese did and done a bad job is the Cheddy Jagan Int'l Airport. When the Chinese finish the project and rain falls inside of the airport buildings were flooded with water several inches. Recently Germany Gov't realized how bully, demanding and controlling the Chinese Gov't is. Many countries don't realize what their getting into
