That instantly makes them think of something of some, and because its on the fly like that they just put a popular answer not necessarily whats correct. The color helps him narrow down what or where it might be, and its just a list of possibilities from there. He probably does this a few times a night and gets similar answers every time. pick normal looking people, no kids or free spirits with outlandish answers. very cool trick nonetheless.
No, reading people is almost impossible no matter what scam artists want you to believe and magic tricks are made to work every time (when done right of course), so they are just that, tricks. Most likely had a way to peek but of course until you know the trick it seems impossible.
The trick was fooling you into thinking he could cold read randoms. You can see his clever technique, if you watch closely. It's not cold reading. He finds a way to look at the cards. I won't say how or when, but if you know what you're looking for, you'll see it. And it's so damn smooth.
