Good stuff. My routine has had to change recently; look out for a video on that soon...

This is a bit off subject. But was thinking of you much of yesterday.
I had given some of my writing to a friend asking him to comment. His response was tough questioning my whole premise. Everything seemed to fall. I was pretty devastated. Then I remembered your video on being resilience. It's tough. I remember you saying you had loads of kickbacks. I'm beginning to see he did me a favour. More work is required. I think it will make my work better in the long run. Writing takes a lot of time to unfold in finding.

My immediate response is who is your friend and what do they know? Are they an editor, for example? Their points may be perfectly valid, and if they have struck a nerve with you, highlighted things you may have been aware of in the back of your mind, then fair enough. But if this person is just someone who reads and they've pulled your book apart, bear in mind that you can't write by committee; that's why I've never taken part in a writers' group. Have one person in mind when you're writing, and write for them and them alone. It might be a partner, for example. You can't second guess what the audience might want. Take The Thursday Murder Club by that bloke off Pointless. It's a book that's doing pretty well and he's doing pretty well as a writer. My wife read it and thought it was tripe. So, your friend may have valid points. But stick to your guns.

Thanks for your reply Kevin. The thing which made this most painful is that I know my friend was right in his criticisms. Once I calmed down and got over myself I realised he made some positive points but the more difficult stuff I knew was true. I thought I had this booklet 'in the can' but I hadn't it needs more work. As you have said before everything takes time there are no short cuts.

Very well put Martin! 🙂👍I would only add to that Kevin Kelly's advice: Don't be the best; be the only one. That takes care of the competition problem. 😉 And as to online connections and relationships, in my humble opinion, positives outweigh the negatives by a good margin. Problems arise when people try to shoehorn pre-existing forms like: meetings, lectures, seminars, courses etc in zoom, MOOCS and so on. It's different. I enjoy our casual exchanges on UA-cam very much, and to hang around a bar to have a chat, at least one of us would have to burn 6 tons of jet fuel, so it's probably better to communicate this way. 😉 Thanks for the inspirational pieces of wisdom and have a very nice day. 🙂👍
