- Morning pages are very popular - and with good reason! But why do we write morning pages? What do we hope to get out of them?

Hi Martin. I'm just starting the third week of Morning Pages; it is becoming a ritual. I'm surprised, unsure I should be, how calming they are. There have been situations during these weeks where I could have blown up at work, but I have been calm, picked the positives, and not let the negativity permeate my feelings. I missed doing them on weekends, and after a disturbed night's sleep last night, I got up early today and wrote because I wanted to write. Later on, I broke through a milestone word count in my novel. In my morning pages, I've also worked out how I want the story to proceed, which was a big bonus. Morning pages are quickly becoming a positive for me.
Great stuff! Carry on!
I love your videos. Your voice is calm, reassuring and confident and I like that very much. I started Morning Pages a little over a month ago and as of this morning, I have filled an entire composition notebook. I started because I've been going through some tough times and I felt that i was simply bumbling through life haphazardly. My life seemed to be spiraling out of control and I wanted to rein it in, find out what I wanted instead of what everyone else told me I wanted. I thought Morning Pages might help me to tap in to my creativity while also allowing me to find myself again...and I wanted that to influence how I stepped out into the world each morning. There are days when I use a fourth page to reflect on what I may have learned after the immediate release of my morning pages onto paper. Other days, I move on with my day without that immediate reflection. But either way, these pages have become a part of my day and something I very much look forward to. I keep a separate notebook for the journaling aspect of writing and other notebooks for writing stories, etc.. I love the process of actually writing the words, the way they flow off my pen onto paper and it fascinates me when the words seem to flow out of the pen before my brain has even realized what I'm going to write. This happens when I'm working on a story...characters take on a life of their own and my pen is simply their vehicle for coming alive! Thank you for your videos. I am so glad I've found your channel! In watching your videos, I feel like I've found someone who understands.
Thank you for taking the time to write such a lovely comment 🙏 Very timely too, as I'm struggling with motivation a little at the moment. I'll publish another video soon, just for you.
Hi Martin. Thanks for this video. Because of you, I'm inspired to try morning pages. I sense that this ritual will help me to get in better touch with myself.
Let me know how you get on! Thanks for watching and taking the time to leave a comment 🙏
Morning pages have been a shocking revelation for me.
I already journal in the evening and get quite a bit out of it.
I get so much more out of the morning pages. And I really wasn't expecting it.
I'm a chronic over-thinker which feeds my anxiety.
And some days my anxiety has anxiety 😂.
Since starting morning pages I've seen a huge improvement in mental health, I feel calmer and more relaxed. I'm able to recognise when I'm overthinking or being anxious and sit with it rather than let it spiral out of control. I now carry a notebook with me to note what is on my mind.
Most of my morning pages make little sense. But the process let's me slow things down and is a bit like emptying the trash can of thoughts.
And if there's something that's been bothering me I usually find the answer in what I write.
I've also had some great ideas come out of it.
Brilliant! This channel was for a while called The Overthinker!
I am trying to get this to be a regular ritual. It is so valuable to hear your experience. My resolve is strengthened.
Soon after starting morning pages a few years ago, I accidentally stumbled into creative opportunities without effort. So, I must resume.
Give it a go and let me know how you get on...

Morning pages help me process emotions, ponder life, and make me aware of how to continue developing my character. I just started doing morning pages. I’ve immediately noticed how they benefit my life.
Great stuff! Keep it up!
Do you read back what you wrote?
@@marieafable7976 I do review them. However I usually discover something about myself or something I’m curious about. I tag it so I can review and carry ideas forward.
Hi. Love your vlogs. You deserve many more views. Feel sure they’ll come. Sorry: not so keen on number of clips underlining what’s just been said. But that’s just me. Content is excellent, so ‘underlining the obvious’ (soz), is forgivable. I’ve found MP transformative too, for somewhere between 5-10 yrs, the cornerstone of establishing the attitude I wanna take into ea day. I prefer to type. Save n copy into my Air Journal (also digital) anything helpful - once or twice week sometimes. The rest (most) is immediately deleted. Sometimes that alone is therapeutic. 👍
Thanks. Glad you like the vids. I will beat your feedback in mind; I'm really just trying to make it a little more interesting than just me talking. Look out for vids on analogue Vs digital methods coming soon!
I totally failed with writing morning pages. It wasnt the time of day that was the problem, it's that there was nothing there, in my head. No subcinscious thoughts. Literally nothing to bring out onto the paper. I couldnt write about dreams because I didnt have any. I couldnt write about what I thought about yesterday because I couldnt remember what I did yesterday. I couldnt think of anythig else to write without consciously thinking (so it was no longer "stream of sonsciousness"). For two weeks I wrote "I have nothing to say" for three pages, I wasted almost a whole notebook, 30-45 minutes a day writing that rubbish and a stinking bad mood for the rest of the day that badly affected my productivity at work. I had to quit before my mental health got too damaged by it.
Is there anything I can do to make morning pages work for me?
I would say morning pages aren't for everyone. Maybe they're just not for you. Perhaps try another form of journaling. Something you enjoy and find relaxing. That could help you more than trying to force something that doesn't work.
"None of it was raw" I can totally relate to that in how I create my artwork. Already public before I even started. Difficult to just let myself loose without the thought that this might be seen by others. I don't have to publish unsuccessful art, but it would feel like a waste of time to create one. And so I censor myself from the very start. Need to get rid of this mindset. Not easy.
You're right, it's not easy. But it is possible. Tell yourself no one cares and no one will see it, and produce what you feel...
What are morning pages? Is that writing first thing in the morning? I used to do that, still do. Not a writer, but I sometimes write 10-20min non stop without ever correcting. Is that it? PD. I have seen a couple of you videos. but I am not sure I have heard an explanation as to what they are. Sorry about that.
Yes, that's pretty much it. They're from Julia Cameron's book The Artist's Way. Check out this video for more: ua-cam.com/video/22vd7lYhqA8/v-deo.html
did it take you a while to actually start writing things that were actually gems or was it something that started showing up early on
In my morning pages? I can't remember. Probably later on, because at first you have to learn how to do it. I'm planning on videos in which I look back at my old notebooks, so maybe we'll find out!
I find that most of the things I write about are very mundane - how I slept, the weather, what I did yesterday - so I just started carrying a little pocket notebook to write down things I think about during the day that want to ponder in the morning.
@@alfredmollitor671 "what I did yesterday" is good...
Do you read back what you wrote?
Rarely, and only on the day if something crops up that I feel is important. There was one such occurrence last week. _Email [person]_ appeared on the page in front of me. So I did. But I don't look back at old pages, other than a very rare glance.
