Mike, I got a good one for you. I think my ignition switch is bad. But it's bushhogging time. So, I'm having to jumpstart the tractor. Oh, by the way it won't even jumpstart if the parking brake is not set. It will turn over, but the brake must have something to do with the fuel shut off. We'll get to it when I'm through bushhogging. Oh, I have a New Holland TC40-A
Thanks Mike. I retired from 25 years of police work on a 26 acre rural property with a tractor; and I am not mechanically inclined - I have found these videos so, so helpful. thanks again Jim
Thanks Mike for showing and explaining the safety switches. My uncle was a salemen for Massey Ferguson in Oklahoma and his customers were treated like family no matter how old the tractor was. That connector is a weak point if it can come apart so easy. You think that for the price of a tractor the manufacturer would have at least put a clip assembly to prevent that from happening.
First tractor mod anyone should do. Rewire the ignition straight from the switch to the starter and bypass all the switches. Itll save many hours of time down the road.
BINGO! That is the first thing my dad use to do and now it's the first thing I do to every piece of equipment upon arrival to our property. Safety Sally's can cry their heart out!
Who do i call well unfortunately i have to call myself. I have not had the luxury of being able to afford mechanics. Therefore i learned to become a mechanic should the need arise. I'm 60 now not much i havnt seen around machinery. So more often I'm the one getting called for these things and being an old Boyscout I'm always eager to help out.
Hello Mike, I have a 1970 international 428 with a no start problem, When i turn the key the dash lightes do light but no starter. When i hot wire the starter I dont get the bendix to engage, but i can here the starter wine. Is that a starter issue? how can i test the clutch safety switch. thanks for your help
Excellent Mike! I guess I better find out where all my safety switches are for the time when my tractor won't start. I expect it is one of those "not if but when" things given enough time.
It's a safety switch somewhere, likely the seat switch. Make sure the seat goes down far enough for the operator presence switch to know you're there. If there's something stored behind the seat that might keep it from going down. Good luck!
good work on the diagnostics. i had a field mouse chew some wires on my MF 1429, one of which was the PTO switch. i tried to splice it back but when i went to crank the tractor, i heard a small crack or pop now i get no contact at all. the splice was clean but i did try to start before i had the instrument panel screwed back into place. i changed all of the fuses, replacing the battery. could it be i zapped a relay or something. thanks in advance!
I have a 97 NH 1715 and did a clutch change and hydraulic/steering fluid change and now it won't start and the only safety switch I can find is the clutch pedal switch and tried the jumper and still don't start and has a new battery and starter, when you turn the switch the dash lights come on and the glow plugs work but you get nothing out of the starter and even took the starter off and put the old one back on and nothing, any ideas ?
neighbors NH had the same problem once. i had to use a jumper because the switch was toast. didnt charge her nothing cuz i needed to use the tractor anyways.
Mr Mike I have 1975 new Holland I believe mine don't have the safety switch but mine don't start no noise no nothing it was riding good I was cut grass and it was like brand new then I park for 2 week now came back now it won't start any ideas
Make sure the PTO wasn't left on or that there's something behind the seat that's keeping the operator presence switch from being engaged. You can see all of the safety switches on the tractor by going to New Holland's parts website here and entering your model number: www.mycnhistore.com/us/en/newhollandag. Good luck!
Great tips on the safety switches. I have a Massey GC1710 which wouldn’t start after I turned it off to change a snowblower shear pin. Turned out to be the PTO safety switch which I then temporarily by-passed. Thanks for all your informative videos. Andy. Ontario, Canada.
Hi Mike I have a tc 55 DA EHSS and it again won't start this happened 3 time . I have a good battery and checked all the fuses . The ignition switch when turned on to cold start doesn't light ,just the battery light and the oil pressure light come on . No light when ignition switch in position for cold start. I'm thinking it might be the relay . I have checked the seat switch and it is working . Still working on diagnostic tests of other electrical components ,but so far I am stumped by it working on day and not the next . Thanks for your video .any ideas would help .Tom
A few weeks ago I hopped on my 1980 Ford 7700 and it was a no start. It only has one safety switch on the clutch pedal but I suspected the key switch as I noticed none of the dash lights came on even though I could jump the starter and it fired right up. So I bought a new switch without testing anything and it fixed the problem. Those old Fords were better than any other brand bar none but I guess after 39 years something had to fail 😂
Hi Mike, my Massey 2310 has no power to the system, flashers work but doesn't turn over. I have checked the five fuses I found and all look good. Please help. Thanks, Brad
Good video. On the subject of batteries and terminals: CRC Terminal Protector is a great product. I use it on everything I own which has a battery for electric start--car, truck, tractor, & riding mower. One application lasts for at least 1/2 a year. No battery crud/corrosion, stuck terminals, etc.
I knew of a woman whose tractor would not work( it quit in the field) and would not start back up, she couldn't figure it out that it was out of fuel !!!!!
Mike, I washed my tractor today and now when I put the key in and turn it to the glow plug cycle the tractor starts and the start keeps in gaging and spinning. When I pull the key out its wet what is the best thing to use to try and dry out the ignition switch
Thanks, Mike, for another very helpful video. You convinced me to take another look at my safety switches; ending a three week hiatus in my tractor operations … we’ll, almost. It cranks now, but I simply can’t figure out why the same (electrical?) issues keep occurring on my 2004 New Holland TC40DA; completely shutting down my: - FEL mounted brush cutter/root grapple (third function valve) functions, - Hi / Lo Range selectors (joystick & fender mount switches); - Instrument panel gauges (tach, battery light, etc., ALL go haywire!) - blowing fuses (#s 5 & sometimes #7) I know these all share some common electrical sources, but this craziness has been ongoing (off and on; mostly “off”, as in “not working”, for almost two years. I would really appreciate it if you have any information about this issue.
That's one of those that may take forever to find and could just be a dead short somewhere. I'd get a multimeter and check every wire from back to front and the owner's manual has a decent wiring diagram in it. Good luck!
Please do a video on how to jump the starter main and signal terminal. It’s a good start to diagnosing and in a pinch you can do it to just get it somewhere to work on it.
Had the same thing happen to me this week. Turned out to be a blown fuse. I just hope there isn't something else wrong that causes this fuse to blow again... and again.
Good video Mike. Our church has a New Holland TC29D. The PTO has gotten progressively worse about disengaging under load. It actually jumps out too frequently to use with bush hog anymore. That's its primary use. It's a 2003 model with about 1100 hours. Do you think there are any adjustments outside the diff? Or, are we going to have to go inside?
Wayne, I should know but don't know, but I'd bet the service manager at your local New Holland dealership could probably tell you. If not, shoot me an e-mail at mike@asktractormike.com and I'll try to find out from my contacts.
Hi Mike! I just subscribed to your videos. They are most informative! I have a similar problem with my JD. It starts ok but when I turn on the pto to run my new Woodmax chipper, the engine quits. As soon as I remain sitted the chipper runs great. I have it in neutral. I’m thinking of bypassing the seat safety switch but what else could I do? My JD is a 3203 using a new Woodmax 800M chipper. Thanks! Well, after talking to my local John Deere dealer about my problem, I ended up adding a switch to bypass the safety switch under the seat. Problem solved. Thanks anyway.
Great video . You just saved Jim a bundle of money . If he had called the dealer they would have sent someone out to have a look and charged a good dollar for it and you might have lost the use of the tractor for a few days . Not only that if the dealer operated like some of these garages do the mechanic could say you need this and that and then plugged that wire in . This is the perfect kind of video that many people need to see . Thanks.
Hey Mike, Thank you for all of your videos. It's been 40 plus years since I was running a farm tractor on my dad's old place. Now that I am retired and I have five acres with a 9N and a new Kioti 21 HP tractor I am realizing how much that I have forgotten. again thank you very much. P.S. I have to go back and like all of your videos that I have been watching.
@@TractorMike I hope to join you and others on UA-cam. I wish that I had been video taping everything that I've been doing the last year. Getting the 9N's gas tank fixed, adding the Pat-s Easy Change to it, and other things. I'm heading back up to Idaho tomorrow and will be installing an over run clutch and rotary cutter slip clutch on the 9N and Brush Hog thanks to your safety advice.
I need help!!! Was using my Kubota b2301 Saturday. Was using the backhoe and went to reposition the tractor and it stalled out . Has plenty of fuel and will still idle on low or high just when I give gas it stalls out . Any help would be hugely appreciated
My wire was unplugged just like his. Not only did this video fix my tractor it made me laugh and get ready for the unknown adventure I was heading into. The adventure only took 10 minutes, a nice surprise. THANKS TO BOTH OF YOU.
Thanks for this video. I serviced and washed my tractor yesterday. Ran it for probably an hour after that. Went out this morning to get started and nothing. All the dash lights came on but it wouldn’t do anything. Im guessing that i got a safety switch wet. Checked the switches, all good. I came in and searched youtube for tractor safety switches and found this video. Here is where i feel like an idiot. I didn’t have the shuttle shifter in neutral. Never crossed my mind to check it. Im glad you mentioned that to your buddy. I was ready to call the dealer as my tractor is only a year old. Thanks👍👍👍👍👍👍
Too damn much safety crap on these newer tractors !!!!!

Says to grease the battery terminals in the kubota manual. Manuals and videos are great for newbies like me.
OSHA and the EPA makes them stuff more crap in them than Granny's Thanksgiving turkey.
Good catch Mike. Great video
Great job, Tractor Mechanic Mike!!

Old JD made in 60',s I think its 1010 Gas ! Will not start! New battery- new plugs !
Loved it Mike. I can't believe how dirty his tractor was.
Great troubleshooting video Mike and nice job helping out your buddy.. Thanks.
Great video, but you should use a fused jumper wire.
Why won’t my Kubota 2650 won’t start

thanks for trouble shooting for no starting tractor
