- The backi franchise is very, very long, over 1300 chapters, and is slit between 5 parts, with 6TH coming out literally as I was editing this. I caver the first 2 parts in this video, as spoiler free as possible, while breaking down the art in every way. This Manga is amazing, the way Grappler Baki and New Grappler baki / Baki Hanma changes, is epic.

Baki has the most polarizing and unique artstyle sometimes I hate it and wonder wtf I’m looking at 😂 and other times I can’t look away very interesting art

I personally just absolutely love it.
I had no idea the mangaka actually dominated anatomy and proportions perfectly and that he purposely makes the proportions wrong later to make it more interesting to look at.
Gotta master the rules before you break them.

Itagaki's art is absolutely phenomenal.
Hell, I think he even admitted at one point or another that he intentionally plays with the proportions and overexagerates expressions to make the individual panels look more interesting.
He 100% does that yea. You cant make anatomy look correct while hyper realizing it. He is too goated for us.
i genuinly really like the art in the new mangas, no joke the gesture is GREAT and the lines of action are REALLY appealing
Ah and don't forget the legs my friend. When the prison and Chinese tournament started the characters legs were incrediblely long and before that size of characters kept changing. Hanayama is 6'4 yet in early baki the dude look like he was 8 feet tall.
I should have mentioned that in the anatomy section. Even in the Death Row Convicts arc, some characters legs were 2.5 times longer then their torso.
Itagaki had one of my favorite art styles in all of manga. The way he draws characters when they are angry and how he represents how strong a character is by distorting the background. The way he renders the muscularity of characters while also having clear movements and panels

I fucking love Itagaki's art style! Baki looks fucking amazing, the same reason why I love Kengan Ashura and Omega, these two in my opinion have the most original art styles in modern anime where everything is generic, standarized, boring and copy pastes. Thanks Sandro, Daro and Itagaki for making these. While the story is arguably going thru their up and downs.. more downs than ups honestly, the artwork never ceases to amaze me. Murata is cool too.

Personally my favorite artstyle is around the end of the maximum tournament. The physiques were just fucking crazy, and I like the way he drew faces back then.

The thing with the body of modern baki is that theyre actually detail, its exageretad yes but every muscle is there just cranked up to 11
Yup. Its cartoony but grounded...at least as grounded as a demon back can be. But it does look good no matter how you look at it!

Still not over Baki 2018 skipping the entire childhood saga up to the maximum tournament. There’s so much depth in Baki’s character that’s skipped over and thus misunderstood by new fans because of it like the call backs to the Yasha Ape when Baki wanted to fight Pickle but he felt regret because he almost made the mistake of making someone who just wanted to live peacefully fight intensely and maybe even to the death because of his own emotions or the relationship between the two Hanma brothers developing deeply because of their fight and getting to know each other on a deeper level through combat
I don't know why Netflix didn't just license the first two seasons made in 2001.

Yea i didnt look much into that. I just grabed which ever body type Oliver was similar to for the sake of the point. But it is interesting that his build is based off of someone tho.

There first manga series, *"Grappler Baki"* (42 volumes) has been adapted in 2 anime series back-to-back in 2001, each consisting of 24 episodes (basically the very young "kid thug Baki" saga, followed by the "Maximum Tournament" saga), and if you watch the Netflix adaptation of *"New Grappler Baki"* right after, and then the adaptation of "Son of Ogre", then you're not missing anything crucial.
As a bonus, since the 2001 anime was being made when "New Grappler Baki" (31 volumes) was already being released, they added some stuff that wasn't in the manga, like Dorian Kaioh being in Restu's flashbacks, or Biscuit Oliva being in Yujiro's Vietnam flashback...
There is also a 1994 OVA that is pretty good that covers the very beginning of "Grappler Baki", when our protagonist enters an Shinshinkai karate tournament as a white belt and beats Suedo, and then goes on to have a match in the underground arena against Shinogi Koushou.
The events of that OVA are covered in the episodes 17&18 of the first 2001 "Grappler Baki" anime.

There are some differences between the manga and the two 2001 animes (that consist of 48 episodes in total, as a reminded), but it's relatively faithful.
As a big Igari Kanji fanboy, I was a bit pissed that his legendary fight against Mount Toba, which is the subject of the very first *Baki Gaiden* (that takes place right after the Maximum Tournament Saga) instead takes place waaaay before that, just before Baki's own fight against Toba.
And in the anime, that legendary battle is instead a squash match in which Igari is easily beaten by Mt Toba, so Kanji doesn't look very threatening when he enters the later tournament...
There are several examples like that, but unless you're a massive Baki nerd, that shouldn't bother you too much.
But hey, right now is a good times to be a Baki nerd.
Between Baki Rahen, and the various excellent Baki Gaiden mangas... we have
-the one focused on Gaia & Sikorsky, I love it! Kind of slice of life instead of serious fights so far, but it's fun.
- the one focusing on my man Chiharu Shiba, who is currently taking on Ron Shobun and Shunsei Kaku from the Chinese Kaioh Tournament... I love Shiba the bosozoku, so that one is a delight!
-the excellent Yuuenchi, that focuses on Orochi Katsumi's long lost older brother, his grudge against death row inmate Ryuukou Yanagi... there are also cameos from a couple characters from *Garouden* , so Itagaki fans should love that one!
- The only one I'm not reading right now, the Retsu Kaioh Isekai... I'll binge it when it's over I guess, I'm just not a fan of the genre.
Idk if you ever read the manga, "History's Strongest Disciple Kenichi" but it would be cool if someone a made like this about it. The art really changed as the series progressed.

I’ve noticed the sketching and line work resembles a blend of eastern traditional paintings and western comic books. The manga even shows the classic depiction of Miyamoto Musashi next to Itagaki’s art style; if you saw it you saw it
I did kinda see the treditional stuff with baki Hanma and the next baki part, especially with the eyes being so sharp, while the eyelashes were super long and smooth
Loved the video dude, i pretty much have the same opinions on Bakis art; Itagakis shading and abnormal body anatomy is unique and honestly refreshing to see an art style like his.
You should do a video on Yoshihiro Togashis art evolution, hes my favorite mangaka ever. His art style changed so many times from 90s up until now. He likes to blend realistic faces in with 90's anime style and sometimes cartoonish too. He uses different mediums like watercolor and such.

TBH with ya, for me, Baki, Bleach and Magi covers are PEAK in all of manga. They are literally dripping with love and drip.

(You can read about animation production on sakugabooru, but I recommend watching Mankoman - all about "who did this scene and that scene". For example Hisashi Mori was the one who draw Katana man appearance in Chainsawman, he is veteran of anime and can draw however the fck he wants without looking at anime stylistic like in Baki:)))

i would say the muscles got more realistic as the author learned more about anatomy despite how much more absurd the bodies may seem. With muscle striations and such I am no anatomy expert just what it seems like

I think different characters look much better in different eras in artstyles. Doppo used to have this serene/effortlessly confident expression that would snap into the madman tiger face. None of which works with the later Baki-Dou era artstyle where it looks like he has botox lips.
Also new Pickle makes me sick to look at.
For a greater artstyle study of Itagaki, his Garouden would be fun to look at. Not as off the walls as Baki but definitely a very clean looking series.
If you look at Baki himself from part 1 and then part 3, there is a big difference. Even Doppo changed if you take into account how he was a bit more goffy previously and how much wrinkles and Muscle he has on his face now.
The Netflix anime didn't skip anything. Those chapters were covered in the old anime
aint no way you can cover over 800 chapters, in like not even 100 episodes (and this is including the original Baki anime too)
@@LeoArmada you can because the pacing in baki manga is infamously slow. The rest of the series, from the convicts saga to the father and son fight was adapted in 78 episodes by netflix, that's 588 or some chapters. The old anime might not have been as faithful as the netflix anime, but I can't name any significant changes off the top of my head.

Eh in all fairness to the Netflix anime skipping to the prisoner arc, the early 2000s anime adaptations cover a lot of what came before the prisoner arc. Could be a rights issue on Netflix not being able to get it.
I've read like 900 chapters, and I still have no idea if I actually like Baki or slightly dislike it.
Shading doesn't make everything better. The available contrast shrinks. Therefore it can be a good idea, at times, to not make everything more 3d in order yo get it to stand out more.
It does actually. Shaiding is inharitly darker, as a resault, less light gets blasted at your eyes, and it stresses them out less. Even if we take that out of the calculation, Shading in everything allows for more depth and texture, 3d feel and clarity on The Forground. You say sheading lowers available contrast, which is complitely wrong, contrast is 2 opposite colours, or close to opposite, interacting with each other, in a way that makes one or the other stand out (at least in this case), so with baki, as we discussed, the lances of light CLEARLY and brilliantly increase the contrast only because there was abbundence of shading. That long line or trail, is a complete CONTRAST to the gray and dark background/forground. You can make the forground more clear by not having a flate tone, which they dont, thats exclusive to backgrounds, and characters always have that CONTRAST of lighting that defies their outline and detail
Baki and jojos have the same effect from their art styles, u either love it or hate it.

Yes, like the Gundum wing (1995) and Devil Man series which ran from 1987 to 1990. Im not too knowledgeable on those topics so I just picked the most iconic images to represent that era. Doesnt quite go 1 to 1 but yea, its simply a representation.

100% and Land Of The Lustrous when it comes to just anime stuff. That series 3D CGI was amazing, not on the same level since this is a series and others were video games, but for the limitations, it looks amazing still
