      yes, that's why I don't have big scale models. I can crash my small electric planes just fine and only be out a couple hundred. but it's the pride in building, whatever it costs. I can imagine some won;t even fly their build. just display and possibly sell or just keep

    • @ifrit35
      @ifrit35 6 років тому +2

      Well, it doesn't happen very often because most of these big rc airplanes don't fly at all. Obviously because their owner are afraid that something similar will happen to them. I may change my mind over time but I personally don't like really complicated builds like this particular example.

    • @ulrichterhorst3527
      @ulrichterhorst3527 6 років тому +8

      Nope! In Germany your plane has to pass a technical inspection of the german aviation authority if its mass is more than 25kg. Also the model plane airfield must have a special licence for heavy planes like these. There are not so many places, where you are allowed to fly these huge planes. And the laws are becoming more and more strict because of all the childish drone "pilots" who cause many accidents, when they buy a cheap crappy drone and fly without any skills or knowledge and no insurance. Model plane hobbyists, who have a very clean savety record, suffer from the drone development these days.

      It's a shame you feel this way, all I am seeing is a nicely built model, great flight, perfect approach and just a touch too much elevator as he tries to settle it down and unfortunately the engine cuts and yaws the plane badly from the resulting engine's power on a throttle out. There's really no need to be so critical of the effort here, it takes a lot of effort to get a plane like that made and into the air and I certainly appreciate watching them, when it all goes well.

    As a qualified UA-cam pilot I'd say he gunned the remaining port engine (maybe without even realising he'd just lost the other two), plane yawed, starboard wing stalled, goodnight Vienna. Sad he didn't have some height when he lost the other engines. What a beautiful plane that was.

    • @petrsedlak4761
      @petrsedlak4761 Рік тому +2

      The problem was not the engines. Problem was abrupt pull on the elevator when it was completely unnecesary. Then he realised, that plane lost most of its speed and tried to use full throttle which stopped two of three engines because fuel was not willing to go uphill so easily. Lack of experince. Plane was overcontrolled.

    Here's what happened. Pilot didn't like the landing, came down a little too fast, so he decided to abort. He went full throttle to abort, but the middle and right engines stalled. the left engine ramped up and pulled the aircraft hard right, he was in a pickle then. He should have powered down and tried rudder left to correct and ended with a hard landing. Instead, he kept full throttle hoping to get enough airspeed to recover, he probably didn't notice only one engine was going until it was too late, he was doomed. MAYBE he could have gotten more airspeed at half throttle and been able to counter the off center thrust with rudder, but full throttle was just too much.

      Jim sworthow Approach looked OK but for some reason, the pilot wanted to abort the landing and do a go around. Why? Applied power too quickly and two engines quit (flooded with fuel?). Unfortunately, the left outboard motor revved up causing asymmetrical thrust. From then on, the plane was doomed. Asymmetric power, too low. The non-powered side stalled, resulting in almost immediate crash. Probably can be repaired. More powerful motors would help. Or, was it underpowered on purpose to add realism?

      I could, but who knows the ending I would have. I wasn't there so I can't say. I've had a twin engine die during a pass and had to fly her around again with only one engine and that was a maiden flight. Major pucker factor, but after base to final approach, I cut throttle and glided in until I realized I didn't have the speed to clear the bushes at the end of the runway. I wasn't about to apply throttle again educing a horrible yaw so I decided to make it a harsh landing instead. Only skipped a tooth on the starboard landing gear so no harm at all there, but broke a 3 bladed prop. No other harm was done, but I knew the engine was out ahead of time. I don't know what I would have done in this case. Maybe the same??? But I would like to think that I would have noticed sooner and powered off for a hard landing. But who knows? I may have done the same exact thing.???? I fly 3D heli's also so planes are relaxing to me no matter the plane for the most part. I have had to have extremely fast reflexes, but that mostly applies to heli's. May cross over to planes as well, but I'm humble enough to say that I might have ended up just like he did.

    Avoidable Crash due to a sequence of pilot/safety pilot errors:
    Huge time window: for corrective action:
    From any time before 7:33 ~ 7:44 to fly the aircraft correctly and complete a safe landing.
    A great demonstration of how a model pilot and safety pilot can crash an aircraft through:
    1 - Lack of flight routine preparation
    2 - Lack of flight routine practice
    3 - Lack of coordination/communication between pilot and a properly briefed Safety Pilot
    4 - Lack of basic flying skills including:
    - Staying ahead of the aircraft
    - Controlling the flight path of the aircraft
    - Use of rudder
    - Use of elevator
    - Throttle management during a baulked landing manoeuvre
    6 - Lack of Experience
    - Ability to remain calm
    - Fly the aircraft
    - Follow emergency procedures as briefed before flight
    - Make changes should they become necessary
    Opportunities to avoid the inevitable crash outcome:
    1 - 7:33 Poorly executed approach:
    - Above profile
    - Airspeed high
    Corrective action:
    - Go around
    2 - 7:39 Unstable into the flare:
    - Approach profile
    - Airspeed high
    Corrective action:
    - Go around
    7:40 Application of power during the go around manoeuvre
    During go around
    - Gentle smooth stand the power up to stabilize
    - Pause
    - Then smoothly power up gradually
    Identification of engine failure:
    - Pilot should have recognized this
    - Safety pilot should have stated the failure to the pilot immediately as per pre-flight briefing
    Safety pilot duties
    - Prompting the pilot in the heat of the moment:
    Calmly stating:
    - Get the left rudder in
    - Keep the nose down
    - Fly the aircraft
    - Further flight path guidance as necessary
    3 - 7:40 Application of rudder input up to full deflection to maintain directional control
    If unable to maintain directional control reduce power on remaining left engine
    4 - 7:39 Lower the nose to maintain/increase airspeed
    - Land straight ahead avoiding people and obstacles
    - Power to idle during flare on landing
    - Coordinated rudder input during power reduction reduced to zero at flight idle
    Even as late as 7:44 when the power was reduced momentarily on the left engine
    Application of steps 3 and 4 above would have saved the aircraft.
    Summary:
    The poorly executed approach to land was able to be corrected to complete a stable landing in the remaining landing distance available
    A baulked landing manoeuvre was the correct decision provided sufficient fuel reserves were remaining
    A baulked landing manoeuvre was able to be accomplished until the pilot induced double engine failure occurred
    A landing could have been accomplished after pilot induced double engine failure without loss of control with corrective rudder, throttle and elevator inputs
    A landing could have been accomplished as late as 7:44 when the power was reduced momentarily on the left engine
    A responsible seasoned air show pilot has the discipline to operate safely which includes thorough preparation, and steps to mitigate risk.
    This video is an example where these mandatory requirements were not met.
    Fortunately, no one was injured.
    The builder/owner of the model aircraft will have ample time to reflect on a better selection of a new pilot/safety pilot with the required level of discipline and competence, after the model has been rebuilt.
    A review of the structural design is required where the empennage is attached aft of the wing.
    Clearly there is a weakness that requires improvement during the rebuild process.
    Application of the operational principles and procedures mentioned above will significantly reduce the possibility of a recurrence of the avoidable accident in this video.

    Classic stall/spin. That was horrible!! The pilot seemed very experienced and was doing great "scale flying," which seems so rare in these r/c videos. Wow. R/C Pilot here, I can fly anything. This guy was running the engines too hot at 100% most of the time in flight and ran out of gas early killing two critical engines while on go round, he had the flaps down because he was afraid of stalling it and was trying to be safe, made lots of mistake, no rudder use, flaps down on high speed fly by, banking the wings too much without rudder use, angle of attack was off a lot, his flight path and line of flight was too short for size of model and final mistake was aborting landing because he missed his touchdown zone, tried go round and engines quit due to lack of fuel. I don't think it was his model plane, he was flying it but was not used to it or lacks experience.

    First, even though this is an old YT post, I feel bad for the pilot and creator of such a fine model RC plane. The detail was fantastic and in flight one would have a hard time differing it from a real plane against the clouds.
    The crash was tragic and while folks have argued back and forth about how it could have been save if he had done this or done that, as a pilot he was there, in the moment and having to make instantaneous flight corrections and do so from at hird person, not first person viewpoint.
    here is what I observed and I'll start by saying this should be a training film on VMC, stalls, and decision making, especially since no humans were hurt in the process (just a few egos). While the landing started on a good profile, it looks like the plane hit some ground effect for it flatted and slightly climbed for a moment. It looks like the pilot inputted down elevators, but now past the effect, that had the plane descending at an angle that may have caused a nose wheel hit so the pilot correct strongly with up elevator, but added right rudder, pulling it towards the crowd. At the moment he still had three engines, but for what ever reason, as the plane started the climb and turn it lost the right engine first, the middle next in the climb. That tells me he may have been so low on fuel that the two stopped running.
    By this point the die was cast, because one engine was not going to save this plane and had he leveled out and dropped the nose he was point right at the cars. Instead he tried to pull the nose up which caused the plane to stall and when it did, it stalled right into the dead engine on the right. One lesson learned, you can't do a missed approach in a Junkers 52 with two engines, one outboard dead.
    Accidents happened from a series of small events leading to the big event. If fuel killed the two engines, then if he had even 10 more seconds he may have been able to save it. If the plane had not veered to the right he might have saved it by being able to go straight ahead. Had he forced the landing it is possible the plane would have pitch poled and still broken up, but once he lost two engines the end was out of his control.
    I do hope he can repair the damage and once again have her flying. It is better to learn these lessons in a way that does test death directly. My hats off to his abilities to build and fly a plane, despite the outcome. What I would love is if the builders of these giant models put cams in the plane to spice up the video, 5 minutes of exterior view, plane flying does get a little old.

    • @walter2990
      @walter2990 5 років тому +2

      I believe that the guy controlling the aircraft may have realized that the landing was out of control, and then chose to kill the engines, so that he could reduce the possibility of prop induced injuries. He was only able to kill the right, then the center engine before it crashed.
      So glad that nobody was injured!
      Kudos to the pilot.

    • @bucc5062
      @bucc5062 5 років тому +2

      @@walter2990 Okay...possible, but step through the sequence. You will see the right engine stop. that slews the aircraft more to the right even as the center prop still rotates. two or three secs later the center prop does stop and the left is still in full throttle. At this point he had the worst combination...dead engine on the outboard right wing, full power on the left outboard and no power from the center. The right turn shifted the gas away from the right engine causing it to fail. The middle failed next for a similar reason and the left continued, because fuel was still pushed into the intake. I'm not blaming the pilot per se, this is RC flying and bad things happen, but both RC and real pilots can learn from moments like this...don't fly to almost empty tanks, don't bank towards populations and when in VMC, don't stall the plane.

    Engines make some nice noises and generate lightweight power but multi engine projects are a lot safer with electric motors.
    This beautiful model was flying way over scale speed and was a bit on the heavy side. The JU-52 wing has a lot of taper so a tip stall was expected when yanked up at low power. Electric power wouldn't have fixed this problem. When things get crazy low to the ground, close the throttles and try to level out. This could have easily snapped the other direction after recovering from the first snap. The floating ailerons are a bit of an unknown in slipping stalls. Powering out of trouble ups the risk factor dramatically.

    Definitly a pilots error: In case of asymmetric thrust: Nose down, gain speed no full power to prevent yaw force. In case of engine failure in final: Idle and land suitable on glide, do not go around with less than half the thrust available. In case one engine speeds up: Idle and crank. In case of lost contol of one engine: Controlled crash into ground (runway alignment). You are not a hero to posess expensive ACFT, you are a hero to land the cheapest one well in the most desastrous condition.

      Exactly. He aborted the landing tried to recover with a turning climb then stalled the wing. Understandable under the circumstances but he would have been better off leaving the throttle off and lowering the nose to land at a lower speed. The whole issue was caused by trying to land at too high a speed. But I think he aborted the landing because he had already lost alignment with the runway and did not have the airspeed to get it back.

And even if: After attempted go around and spontanious engine failure: Idle: Nose down AND land within 30 degrees. • @ibcoull
      @ibcoull 4 роки тому +1

      I disagree. As a former pilot, I’ve always thought that RC controls looked dangerously hyperactive. In this case one can see that a moment before touchdown, the elevators basically snap fully up, and I’m guessing that an equally abrupt throttle advancement occurred. The resulting partial engine failure, and its unsustainable angle of attack, combined with engine out yaw, combine for a classic multi-engine stall/spin accident. A lot of less than perfect flying technique is offset by the relatively high power to weight ratios enjoyed by the RC model pilot, in this instance I think more realistic (slower) control responses might have resulted in a better outcome.

    The sound of the Moki engines was exquisite. Beautiful aircraft and beautiful flyer. Such a sad ending.

    Schade dass 2von3 Motoren nicht bis zum Ende drehten. Tut mir im Herzen weh.

      Based on the title, I was expecting multiple crashes. But that was a pretty spectacular one, so it will do. :-)

    What a tragic end to a beautiful aircraft. I hope these guys reconstruct it. Good luck.
