I appreciate how open and vulnerable sharing Dr. Nida is in relaying his experiences. His ability to be that honest and have the English to do so is extremely rare for Tibetans. Awesome interview! Thank you!

Why does the professor interrupt and “yessing” every second? That was distracting. But the talk is just fascinating, thank you Dr Nida

It would have been better if the professor didn't keep interrupting, still it was so interesting what dr. Nida talked about.

Come and visit Lakhisarai district of Bihar from where entire Tibetan Buddhisms Indian siddhas hailed from. Tibetan texts are written so well, its easy to identify the places. And in some cases you can meet the decendants of some great siddha's.

Dark retreat is related with Kalachakra tantra practice, for the aim of achieving supreme unchangeable great bliss empty body. In the process of six applications (jordruk) there for signs during the day time and four signs experience during the night time, therefore, this dark retreat is applied.

I always wanted to go into one of those dark floating tanks that were everywhere in the 90's. So cool . . .just you, weightless in blackness. Great way to get over yourself. Im sure the lawyers put the kabosh on those.

Thank you for sharing :). Interesting information I’d have appreciated back in 2020 when I had only experienced a few five and seven day dark retreats and was in preparation for a 93 day kayakalpa dark retreat in India.
Haha due to past karma or what, I’ve very much connected strongly with darkness and since then I’ve had another 89 day kayakalpa last year, a 49 day kayakalpa earlier this year and some smaller several week longs etc over these years.
Though I consider myself very much a novice and definitely not a teacher, after last year’s 89 day I thought to share a few videos about my experiences, insights, best practices, cautions etc. Haha I intended a few videos but it turned into many. Here is that playlist if anyone is interested.
    Much Love ❤😊

Right away, a red flag 🚩 comes to mind.
Darkness for even a couple days can mess up your sleep cycle, serotonin, etc.
What would Tibetan Buddhists and Western Drs say about that?
    And share your thoughts. 👍🏻

That is why you need a teacher and close instructions.

This practice is absolutely crazy, not many people are ready to flourish in surrondings like that. You need a lot of experience with other practices and/or be just hardcore enough to sit in dark and not get freaked out, because it will get very weird and hallucinatory. But it's totally amazing and beneficial for some.

You need a teacher to prepare this retreat, and also a time to integrate the experience after. In Tibet this time for integration use to be 3 months.

hhe's nearly completely deaf even with the hearing aids. . .but he still 'interacts' when he's really just great being solo and doing the talking. The Buddhist doctor works for him at a retreat he has in the Catskills . . .see how this is all flowing now . . . . ."the white guy" is funny -- he's a renowned Tibetologist and best chums with the Dalai Lama. Also Uma Thurman's dad. Just saying people call him a lot of things but
"the white guy" is not usually it. You made me laugh.

@@samechenpo3427 Well, I'm a traditional Catholic, but we're talking about the Rubin, a place dedicated to art of the Himalayas, so I have to wonder why anyone would have a problem with this talk being held here.
