Making a Viking Tool Chest pt2 -BorntoForge -

- This weeks Episode is part 2 of making a viking style tool chest,
Part 1 the chest. This is made in same construction style as many historical finds from the 9th -12th century, this is not intended to be an exact replica. I am making the chest as a prototype to try out the construction and test the locks and hardware for a oak replica of the mastermyr chest that i hope to make in a few months time.
Part 2 - Forging and fitting the hinges and lock, there was a bit of trial and error in this one, working from photo's and draings of finds made this a little challenging but we got there in the end. I did forget to film the key as i just made a quick dummy one to test the lock and ended up modifying it to use as the finished key. maybe one for another video.
Material :-
-Live edge Cedar boards
-Lock & hinges are steel
Finish:- Linseed Oil, Beeswax
Hope you find it interesting, if you have any ideas for future videos let me know in the comments below.

..The Lock is Fantastic, to say the least. Very Good Job of Fit & Finish...!!
More people need to watch your videos. Too many today are ignorant of what went into making the simplest things that we take for granted today.
"As a sign of favor the Jarl gave him what? Doesn't seem like much."
Uh huh, right.
Nice. Very nice. Thank you.
An heirloom yet to be passed on, nice chest!
very nice, your good.. blacksmith and woodworker !!!!
Really great video, no nonsense, just craftsmanship. I look forward to your future videos.
That is the sweetest chest I have ever seen. I might just need to use some of your ideas to make myself one.
Looks like I have to step up my hinge making skills. That locking mechanism is phenomenal!
Beautiful work
I've watched this video of yours once before. I love it!
Nice, nice, nice!
That is an Awesome tool chest! I really like the color and figure of the wood.
You are a true craftsman!
Wonderful idea , Great Work.
👍👏👏👏👏👏
that lock is a master piece!!!
Amazingly simple yet elegant just straight awesome
That is bloody gorgeous.
Such an understatement :)
I'v got to admit that I can't think of a word that *truly* does it justice.
Beautiful work.
Really good job, probably last a lifetime!
beautiful work thank you
Lovely work. I have the plan for this chest and it's nice to see one made and being made.
awesome build!
Awesome work!
Awesome job
This is hella badass
I recently found your channel, and as a blacksmith and viking reenactor I've really enjoyed this series. I'd love it if you did a voice-over on these videos, explaining a bit about the process. Forge on brother.
No, please don't ruin the great videos with a voiceover!
found your channel............beautiful job
That's awesome. I've made a replica Mastermyr chest just lacking the lock and hasps.
Great work 👏
that guy who does the lock has some skills
holy crap you got an anvil too nice!!
The first 13 seconds and I was a fan. Did you guys see how fast he was hammering? Just from that I'm subscribing to this channel.
Good job.
I particularly like the 'Viking' cordless drill - the truth is that I wouldn't wish to be without mine, or my cordless screwdriver these days! -
In a previous life, I bartered 4 inch cutoff wheels and grinders to Vikings for lutefisk and lefse, ya you betcha
amazing chest bro
neat.
Awesome work! Wish I could hammer as fast as you :-D
I was wanting to make a Treasure chest to. I back out of that real quick. Cheaper just buy the plastic tubs
how to get tinnitus , in 17 minutes!
Beautiful work though, love the design!
Awesome video, as a fellow blacksmith I say Bravo, looks very very nice. But I would have added handles on the sides for easier transport :) Blacksmiths tools quickly become heavy :) Other than that, really awesome product. I love the simplicity yet effectiveness of the locking mechanism
Yeah ok, you got me
I was thinking of making a Viking chest out of Pine as a prototype before messing around with expensive Hardwoods, so making your chest this way make sense. My plan is to sell it off to someone who LARPs or who isn't bothered about softwoods. Make the mistakes{if any } on cheap wood first.
nice
Thank you for showing how the lock worked. All those measurements...I just wasn't seeing it.
Yeah, after he installed it I was wondering how it worked, then I was like ooooooooh :D
Those hinges are made for bigger chests, imho.
By the way, good work, very interesting to see.
Sounds like you have a hydrovane or screw compressor. I get the same whine on my vids. It's relatively easy to turn it down in the editor. Great video, my brother built one similar it last year but I didn't get to see the process.
Many people do not know what a job is behind here.

Then I have the question, who sees this kind of videos ??
Anyway, nice work.
Hey did you hand forge the nails? also great job this kind of stuff makes me want to go into blacksmithing
Awesome work, how ever cant you just tilt the box on its side and it would unlock itself?
Nice box, but that high pitch whistle in the audio at 15:48 killed me. 🤢
What was the guillotine like device that you used to move all that metal?
Hey, just a thought for future videos - the background noise / high pitch whine means I turn audio off. Since you are mixing in music, why not turn the whine down or off?
Other than that, thanks for the video!
Yeah, good point Quin. There were a few points where I had to mute the video.
Quin Leach haha I mute all forging or diy project videos it's just a nicer way to watch them...
didn't know vikings make terrible chests, that locking mechanism takes a long time to lock and unlock
what are the dimensions? would this also serve as a rowing bench on a voyage? are you selling project plans for your video projects?
Robert Goodhope it is believed that these chests were often a Vikings companion, and did indeed function as a bench on the boat as well as on land
Looks like you can undo that lock just by tipping the box on it's side.
no chance , its spring loaded and has a internal catch that needs to be depressed by the pins in the key before it can slide
Greetings !!!!!
Can you make Viking throwing axe ???
it is on the list. trying to find a decent target first though
16:34 No spare key ??
I guess that square you used as a rivet set wasn't yours ;)
ты что холодную заклепку не можешь расклепать ?
EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
DIDNT KNOW THE VIKING HAD BAN SAWS
Yes, , but you could get in a lot of trouble if you were caught using one.
Get rid of the music. No matter what music you play, it will be the wrong music, it dose NOT help your video or your fine workmanship.
It was so expensive just to make AMMO CRATES! Much less a chest. 3 ammo crates for shotgun shell in cases. 410, 20, and 12 ga. they cost me 47 bucks each, with hardwear. to make / The ones i made are AWESOME > I didn't make any more!
