  • Today I'm going to begin to build a Viking chest similar to other well known examples, such as the Mästermyr and Oseberg chests. In addition to my interest in swords, castles, and knights (not necessarily in that order), I love stories about Vikings and the art and artifacts they've left behind for us. Even though the actual materials and way that I build it (with modern tools) will obviously differ from their manufacturing methods and tools, hopefully the final result will, as much as possible, be reminiscent of what we see in the extant record.
I'm not an expert woodworker or anything like that, so please bear with me. Hopefully this will be entertaining anyway.

as an amateur wood waster I feel the need to pass on something I've learned about jigsaws. The best use i have found for a jigsaw in fitting joints is holing the plans down in a heavy wind. I'm much better off with a small good quality handsaw. For example the steps in the side and end pieces I find precision much easier. takes a bit longer but I'm always happier with the result.
P.S. I have seem some people make a jigsaw work but I suspect they have made compacts with fell Powers and are not to be trusted

those 2 "failed" attempt boards can still be repurposed as a side table. (win win) 😁😁

Good project--might be more prudent to try difficult joinery on scrap wood first.
