A Simple Warded Box Lock And Key Made From Scrap Steel
Вставка
- Опубліковано 28 лют 2022
- My current woodwork project needs a box lock so I decided to make one out of scrap steel. This is a very basic warded lock. It might not be the most secure lock in the world, but it's going to look perfect on my latest build.
The video of the project the lock is made for can be found here.

I love how you often opt for the more labour intensive tools rather than say using a dremel. Genuinely, it looks far more satisfying.
I get the feeling you would _love_ Clickspring on YT
@@BM-yy8db I totally forgot that channel existed. Thanks for the reminder!
Now that was fun! I can't make it cuz I don't have the equipment, oh yes you can!
For the whole 15 mins I was transported back to the 70's to my apprenticeship days in British Steel. All the basic hand tool stuff, striving for perfection to please our trainers! Brilliant video once again Jason - can't wait to see what the lock goes on! 😊
Thanks very much :)

Wish I had a Tig welder, and I would make one for my plane cabinet. Great job!
Making your own hinges was one thing but now you’re just showing off ! 😲 Can’t wait to see what you build to house it, Cheers Jason🍻🍻
Not too long to wait, Dunc. A couple of weeks maybe :)
What a pleasure to see a creator who doesn't throw stuff around just to be cool.

Mesmerising build, waiting patiently to see where it will be fitted............hurry up cause I can't wait 😂
Not long, Jackie :)
@@EpicUpCycling good, thanks 😊
Love old keys and locks, Old keys always have a mystery to them amazing as always.
Just perfect! I like it very much!
With most things these days created by computers and built by robots it’s incredible to watch someone with the skills and knowledge to build something from scratch and create every moving part by hand .thanks for sharing.
Это просто слесарное кунг- фу! браво!
It's just locksmith kung fu! Bravo!
Not too bad for a woodworker. I also make keys from scratch but not out of junk. Then again I am a locksmith for almost 50 years specializing in antique lock repairs.
Watching you work is an adventure, wondering, “So, why is he doing that?”, then having that piece seamlessly flow into the final object. As always, your attention to detail is mind blowing. Look forward to seeing what it ends up on.
That's called a WARDED lock. The piece of metal that fit through the slot on the key is called a WARD. They can be as simple as this one, or very complicated and elaborate. You have the ward on the unlock, but not on the lock. Thanks for the video. Jon
Is there anything this man cannot do?! 😮
J'j'ai reçu une notification pour votre video, j'étais trop content. J'adore ce calme et cet atelier ainsi que vos idées imergeant de ce lieu. Merci pour cette serrure et cette vidéo. Vivement la prochaine 👌😊😊
Thanks :)
Genuine craftsmanship indeed. Amazing work friend 👍🏼👍🏼
Thanks very much, Ian ☺
"But why would you do it by hand when you can just as easily use power tools, or even just buy something outright?"
*shows this video*
It's about the craftsmanship.
VERY cool. Put me down for 2.
Very enjoyable to watch.
Thanks :)
Like the key.
Wood and now iron... Craft-king
Well done. I liked this...
No solo es buen carpintero también buen cerrajero. ✌️👍Feliz año nuevo!!
Awesome!!! I always wondered what’s inside a lock? Now I can see!!!
So recently i fixed an old door lock, probably 1920's or there about. Welded the worn material sculpted it back to shape. Felt really big-in-town about it, now i see this where you made one from scratch. :)) I gotta up my game, making a lock from scratch is on my bucket list.
Learned alot from this , don't think l could do it bet like watching it be done .
super awesome. First I thought .. "ah, not a woodworking video" but it was totally worth the watch!
Gran bel lavoro, davvero c è tanto da imparare, faccio assorbimento dei tuoi video, così da imparare tanto. Grazie davvero 👍👍👍👍😊
unbelievable you are truly a craftsman. i just found your channel and love it
Thanks very much :)
Once again you make something out of junk. You're an inspiration to all of us who do the same. Thanks Jason.
Thanks :)
Excellent work 👍👍👍 . Thanks for sharing
Thanks :)
I hope you can pass over your skills to a son or daughter or maybe a grandchild. So it continues. Very well done.
Thanks Wendy :)
a real masterpiece, something that enriches the mind and the heart.
amazing to watch, such talent x
Very interesting indeed.
Amazing!
So, again I’m amazed at your craftsmanship. Well done. It was so interesting to watch it all come together.
Thanks Deborah :)
Świetna robota! Greatings from Poland.

👍 Sehr gut und schön, danke
What such a Wonderful!
A craftsman of the ancients, mastering different arts and materials. Also, if you need something for your project, you manage and create it, but without underestimating the detail, the model and the finish.
My most sincere and affectionate applause.
You are a phenomenon.
Thank you for letting us enjoy these amazing videos. A hug.
Thanks very much :)
Jason, That was Epic Dude 😁 TFS, GB :)
Thanks Graeme :)
Totally amazing 🤩
Amazing 👏 🙀
I do believe this is the first time I’ve seen you use a ball peen hammer that doesn’t have tape on the handle 😊. Darlington, South Carolina
I have nothing to say really, but I appreciate your content, and wish to help with the yt-algorithms.
Thanks Marius :)
Desire/Necessity + Skill + Materials + Tools = Really cool stuff. Can't wait to see what it goes in to. Nice work.
Thanks Doug :)
I love that you can make awesome things with simple tools. Fun to watch!
Un artista, enhorabuena por su gran trabajo, un saludo desde España
Thanks :)
Excellent video.
Thanks :)
Another fantastic demonstration of craftsmanship. Wood,metal......what material next!
Thank. I might have to give stone a go :)
Brilliant. FYI, if you put the rod in your drill press, lower it into a vice, clamp and then switch out for a bit you'll get a centre drill location. Nicked that of pask makes.
A good idea :)
@@EpicUpCycling not my idea actually, and probably teaching you to suck eggs lol. Keep up the great work.
I'm excited for the door build that lock will be going into :)
You are amazing Sir, thank you
Thanks Norm :)
Muchísimas gracias por enseñar algo que podemos hacer todos, y felicidades tus videos son excelentes en todos los sentidos
Millones de felicitaciones
Thanks :)
I for one can"t wait to see where this lock and key end up!! Always a pleasure to watch your videos -- thank you!
Thanks Regina. Full build coming soon :)
Interesting! Thumbs up, and thanks for posting.
That is so cool, I can’t wait to see what piece of furniture this is finished to.
*Yesterday I even wondered when the "master handyman" would insert something new*
*Today there was a lot of closing my eyes and the end result is interesting...*
*what will this lock fit ?*
*hymmm promises to be strikingly...*
* I am waiting patiently for the sequel* 😁
*Best wishes* goodvibes
FIRST CLASS !!!!!! Many thanks
This would definitely stump The Lockpicking Lawyer! Great work though.
Nicely done sir.
Thanks Michael :)
Awesome idea.
Thanks :)
Great bit of locksmithing Mate, have a nice day !!!.
Thanks Brian :)
Another interesting video. Can't wait to see where it will be used, but know it will be yet another masterpiece!
Can't wait to see the entire project!
This is very fascinating. There are lots of videos on old locks, how they work, and how to pick them. I've looked and I don't think there are any other videos on UA-cam about how make these old locks. Well, there's one about how to make an ancient wooden one found in Syria. Yeah, they're not terribly secure, but they are fun to play with and create.
Да вы мастер не только по дереву,но и по металлу!классная работа
Thanks :)
Different again Jason. I'm so used to you up cycling wood with the odd metal work accessory, and here you are doing just metal work. Amazing stuff. And ditto Dutch below. More often than not you take the hand tool option rather than power tools, which makes it all the more impressive.
Thanks Peter :)
Gran y meticuloso trabajo
Man, you never cease to amaze. I love seeing how old stuff was made inside, would be really interesting to dissect and figure out what methods were originally used instead of welding - I'd guess lots of holes and peened pins.
Yes, I think most of the ones I've seen look riveted, or peened.
Fascinating as usual, even though there were no pallets involved. But I have a strong suspicion that a bigger project is coming soon, which will incorporate the lock. Looking forward to that. With great impatience, I might add.
Yes, it's for a bigger project coming soon :)
As always, amazing job. If this is going to be part of your next project, I can't wait to see it!
Thanks Jason. Yes, it's for the next project. Video coming soon :)
I always find your videos both entertaining and informative. Also it makes me try to train my brain to look at what I think is scrap or garbage and still be able to use it. I often throw something out only to regret it a few months later.
Very nice lock. it got me wondering if it could be made without the welder using peening, rivets, tabs, and slots
I'm sure it could. A lot of the older ones I've seen were made like that.
They still make them with slots, tabs, rivets & peening. Once you have the tooling and jigs it is faster and cheaper than welding for series production. There appears to be a lot of tools in th background that would have made at least some of the processes quicker and/or easier, such as the hydraulic press for bending and the belt sander/linisher for edge finishing and shaping some of the larger parts. Why use a hand held drill when you have a drill press and vice which would be more accurate? And no backers for some of the through holes?
No idea how u got around heat distortion but finished product... right on. :)
Just no end of "Epic" for what you set your sites on and achieve with scraps...because you can! Simply outstanding to build this with relatively all hand tools and keep it vintage looking and functional. Built a few keys in my day but you've set a new standard now, Loved it! Thanks Jason, can't wait to see what it goes into!
Thanks PJ. Hoping to have the full build video done soon :)
Wow, I really enjoyed watching this come together.
Un verdadero placer verte trabajar, eres un artista, gracias por compartir tus habilidades con nosotros.
Un abrazo desde Barcelona.
Thanks Ricard :)
Great, the burglars can't get in!!
Niek.
The lock is beautiful. I can’t wait to see where you put it. I’m really enjoying this channel.
Thanks Kathy.
The lock is used in this video.

Epic as always. can't wait to see what it locks
A pleasure to watch as always!!!
excellent
Awesome! Can't wait to see the next project.
I watched the whole video but still failed to see what purpose the spring served?
Also will you do a video showing tou installing and using this lock?
The spring is there to keep a small amount of tension on the bar, just enough to stop it sliding on its own. The next video is the project the lock is for :)
I have been following your work since the beginning. This one is different but still very nice job. Looking forward for your next project.
Thanks :)
I've watched several of your videos and it brings me to a wonderful place, remembering the hours I used to watch my Poppy wood work. I do have a question for you, after watching hours of your videos. Do you make your own wood biscuits? I was not sure, I haven't seen you do that in any of your videos that I have watched.
I have made them out of thin plywood before but I also use pre-made ones.
Amazing craftsmanship! Love watching your videos. You put a new meaning to the saying "One man's trash is another man's treasure." All the best and God bless sir.
Thanks :)
