I'd have liked to see your process for the through mortises. Also, I love the simple construction. The addition of the nails and hardware makes me wonder about the rope handles instead of something matching the hinges and latch. Again, these are rugged, yet simple...I've been inspired. Thank you.
Thanks a lot! Unfortunatly I don't have any plans, but there are some on the net that have inspirered me, for exemple: www.angelfire.com/wy/svenskildbiter/Viking/vikchest.html Good luck with your work! :D
Excellent. I'm just about to build myself a vardo (gypsy caravan) to travel with next year (and, I'll be living in it over winter) I think I might have a go at making myself one (or more) of these for storage inside :)
jodohead They are about 800 mm long and 400 mm deep at the bottom and a bit smaller at the top because of the taper, say app 300 mm deep. I can't say exactly since they are sold and I don't have a sketch. Hight: 400 mm.
I liked it. As an additional note, there is a longship load of history here, in a simple chest. Would it be worthwhile to show more of the construction craft of the era to give the modern loons an appreciation of viking culture? Skaal!
Anders - have you had any issues of splitting with clinching the nails with the grain? Sorry, didn’t look at the archeological examples to see if they did the same or cross grain. Figure you would have a few years of experience with them at this point.
Skjoldungar I don't have any plans unfortunatly, I've looket at some plans on the web together with pictures of the originals (Oseberg 178 and the Mästermyr chest) and came up with methods that works for me. This one is around 800 mm long and 400 mm deep at the bottom and a little bit smaller at the top because of the tapered shape. Hight: 400 mm. I also make smaller ones like 600 x 300 x 300 mm. Please check my facebook page for more info and pictures: facebook.com/osemyrviking

I did'nt like the nails from the hasp and hinges just bent over inside the chest. Have you considered working out the lid placement before gluing and assembling, then you could shorten the amount of nail protruding inside the chest, and flatten them on the inside - rivet style, for a cleaner finish. then glue and assemble the box. The nails through the lid can be given the same rivet treatment after assembling, as they're easily accessable
Thanks for input, Will S - The solution with bent nails are according to the archeological finds, but with your method you'll get a cleaner inside, I agree :)
Nice looking wood. Being part Icelandic and Norwegian, I'm wondering what makes it a "Viking" chest? The style of nails and hinges appears from that era, plus I suppose that you can sit on it, and transport it. Thanks, yes, interesting to watch. I subscribed to your channel, feel free also to subscribe to ours!
no i get that it reffers to the video length not to the time it took to build its just the wording makes it sound like it reffers to the building time and why even mention the length of the video in the title its shown in the bottom right corner of the thumbnail
Do you really think the Vikings made boxes like this that looked so planed and licked? Never, because they had neither planes nor sandpaper. If you make such a box, then also with the means of that time, only then is it a Viking box. Thank you for your attention and understanding.
Would have been good to watch, but you need a tripod and to remove the background sound. The high-pitched noise created from speeding up the footage was irritating, and the shake from the camera made me feel ill. Maybe have a go at smoothing out the footage. Sorry
Sorry, I won't give you a like... those bended nails were a terrifying sight. I mean... the usual way is to cut them to length and rivet them. And correct me, if I am wrong but... the frame of the chest would not be connected with nails but with pegs.
Glue can be made from lots of things, many of them 100% natural. Hide glue was a staple of woodworking until the last 50 years or so, and some folks still swear by it. I'd say making glue from the fat on an animal hide is pretty decidedly Viking.
Disagree completely. First vid in memory that didn't have awful, grating, distorted rock n roll. Actually felt relaxed while watching carpentry on meth.
Saws, drills and nails did exist during late Iron Age. I don't claim to work with old methods. Google Oseberg 178 and you'll find the chest origin and role model for my chests. All the Best.
Nice project, you might want to invest in a tripod tho
you really think this was filmed without a tripod? lol
what are the dimensions of this? height? width and length at the top? width and length at the bottom?

You are a true artist.
The chest you made was incredible.
Thanks, Zach! Have a nice weekend! :)
Anders Simonsen Do you sell any Viking related items that you make?
I sell the chests at markets around Scandinavia - Sweden, Norway, Denmark. Please visit my site on facebook - facebook.com/osemyrviking

monkeychicken27 Thanks for your comments and thoughts :) The rope handles were custumors choice. Nice to hear you were inspired :)
I really like it! Thank you for sharing your video with us!
Noice! I want to make one for my viking themed living room now.
do you have plans/dimensions for this? like to make one a bit larger. Please and thanks!
Amazing work man, do you think you can post the plans for this? I might want to recreate something like this in my woods class.
Thanks a lot! Unfortunatly I don't have any plans, but there are some on the net that have inspirered me, for exemple: www.angelfire.com/wy/svenskildbiter/Viking/vikchest.html Good luck with your work! :D
Nice chest :-)
Thanks for sharing!
I didn't care for the high speed squeaks but loved the choice of music. Classy. As is the chest.
Randy Curtis yeah, squeaks can be a bit much. Still a cool video though
Thanks for posting I have been looking for a hand tool chest project other than the standard 6 board chest.
Excellent. I'm just about to build myself a vardo (gypsy caravan) to travel with next year (and, I'll be living in it over winter) I think I might have a go at making myself one (or more) of these for storage inside :)
Now to go on a raid and fill them up!
Fabulous production- both chest and video!
I half expected to see you open the finished chest to reveal Ned Starks head.
(Reading GoT right now.)
Beautiful man... Love it
Just once I'd like to see someone making cool shit without a woodshop and powertools. you know. just the stuff I can use on my apartment patio.
I'm going to make one on my apt. Tiny Balcony this year, once the weather is permitting it!
Excellent craftsmanship! I love anything Old School of historic made of GENUINE wood! Great job!
Could you provide some measurements for this? Specifically, how deep is it at the bottom and top plus, overall height?
Thank you.
jodohead They are about 800 mm long and 400 mm deep at the bottom and a bit smaller at the top because of the taper, say app 300 mm deep. I can't say exactly since they are sold and I don't have a sketch. Hight: 400 mm.
Anders Simonsen That gives me an excellent place to start. Thank you!
Great chest, and great music!
great chest. Where did you get the nails, hasp and hinges?
It's like listening and watching Mr Rodgers Neighborhood Wood Workshop😁
Yes thats exactly how the Vikings did it Im sure of it.
yeah it is, my ancestor left a story how hed whip midgets on a viking bike attached to a belt that ran a saw that made his chest.
I liked it. As an additional note, there is a longship load of history here, in a simple chest. Would it be worthwhile to show more of the construction craft of the era to give the modern loons an appreciation of viking culture? Skaal!
Nice project but I think someone should point out that working that fast could cause Health and Safety issues.
That's awsome
Pretty - and a great tast in music too - thanks!
Great work! Where did you get the nails and hinges from?
Thanks! www.battlemerchant.com
Anders - have you had any issues of splitting with clinching the nails with the grain? Sorry, didn’t look at the archeological examples to see if they did the same or cross grain. Figure you would have a few years of experience with them at this point.
Do you have plans? Measures? Or any other instructions?

Where can I find those nails?
Do you have plans to share possbily? I'd like to make a couple of these for our clan's camp.
Unfortunatly I don't have any plans, but there are some on the net that have inspirered me, for exemple: www.angelfire.com/wy/svenskildbiter/Viking/vikchest.html Good luck with your work! :D
Really nice! Exactly what I'm looking for! Thx
Beautiful chest!
Nice tutorial
Where did you get those nails? They look nice.
I recently made a chest similar to this... did you get the hinges from celticmerchant.com? Yours look very similar to the ones I want to buy.
Adam Whitlach It’s probably the same, but I got them from www.battlemerchant.com
Ya those are the same, and also out of stock there as well. Thanks for the link! Now I have another place to check for restock.
Great video thanks for the entertainment and inspiration...
Nice job
nice work,
Thanks! :)

Nice, but the last time I watched a "how to in four minutes" ended up causing me to work three full days on a simple project. Ha
Nice looking wood. Being part Icelandic and Norwegian, I'm wondering what makes it a "Viking" chest? The style of nails and hinges appears from that era, plus I suppose that you can sit on it, and transport it. Thanks, yes, interesting to watch.

The design is based on archaeological finds from the Viking period...www.angelfire.com/wy/svenskildbiter/Viking/vikchest.html here is a similar one
Nice one!
Thanks! :)
Where did you get the fast drying glue? 6 second glue-up? Hahaha....
Seriously though, that thing looks great. Super nice job, man. Solid work!
Paul Meyette My dark secret :) Thanks a lot :)
Music from Red Letter Media "Half In The Bag" movie reviews, FTW! LOL
All that work to make a beautiful chest. Then use stringy twine rope?
That camera work made me motion sick. I've never been motion sick before...
Slow your playback speed,
What does osemyr mean?
Vihor Vetrov It's a combination of the Oseberg and Mästermyr chest finds.
So did vikings use glue as well?
Yes, animal glue. But I cheat :)
I suppose the slanted sides made them stronger
Indeed = only 4,5 minute :)
ah man.. do all these makers shop at the same place for their background music?? my youtube is on permanent mute
You couldn't keep the camera still?
Old Man from Scene Twenty Four Nope :)
Hej. Går det att komma i kontakt med dig på något sätt..
Hej! Ja då, besök gärna min webbsida www.osemyr.se. Där finns kontaktuppgifter. /Anders
welcome it's chef john . . . :)
I like the video, but a tripod is a must fore sped up or time lapse.
nice build I think, I couldn't watch all of it I got seasick
Bit small to stash English maidens in though
Name your price
where did you find the hinges hasps ?
Philip Davis www.battlemerchant.com/
if you speed up the video the 'in four minutes' is kinda nonesense i mean if i speed up the process i can build a sky scraper in 4 minutes....
no i get that it reffers to the video length not to the time it took to build its just the wording makes it sound like it reffers to the building time and why even mention the length of the video in the title its shown in the bottom right corner of the thumbnail
I honestly thought it would bee building a chest in 4 minutes. It kinda seems lile clickbait to me
raver377 you're nonsense
j. saavedra ... i highly doubt that...i can speak nonsense i can be nonsensical but i cant be nonsense....
its literary impossible :D
I'd be pist off
If he panted it
..nice job

ANDERS SIMONSEN. thanks brother.
i didn't know that Vikings had these kind of tools man xD
Life is full of surprises :D
How to make a chest in 4 minutes, 3 and half years later............
the shaky cam at high speed almost made me vomit
illo loco que mareo, no se muve ná la cámara ni ná
where did you find the medieval hardware for the box.
www.battlemerchant.com
invest in a tripod ... except that . thank you
If you're going to hold your audience, you're just going to have to work faster!
Would have been good to watch, but you need a tripod and to remove the background sound. The high-pitched noise created from speeding up the footage was irritating, and the shake from the camera made me feel ill. Maybe have a go at smoothing out the footage. Sorry
Thanks for input: I sure will invest in a tripod, that's a promise, and I'll do my best for better sound next time :)
Why so fast and no measurements die video our eyes so fast is it
Sorry, I won't give you a like... those bended nails were a terrifying sight. I mean... the usual way is to cut them to length and rivet them.
And correct me, if I am wrong but... the frame of the chest would not be connected with nails but with pegs.
The Vikings would really have had problems without their routers and epoxy glue wouldn't they?
does the camera man have parkinsons or something?
Ni que fuera de carton lo haces en 4 minutos....
Lola hand saws the planks but uses power tools To do the routing..wtf!!
TIL vikings used glue
Jackie Black
There is alternatives to glue in nature that they used fool
Glue can be made from lots of things, many of them 100% natural. Hide glue was a staple of woodworking until the last 50 years or so, and some folks still swear by it. I'd say making glue from the fat on an animal hide is pretty decidedly Viking.
Sorry I can't watch this... The combination of high speed movie and an unsteady camera position is making me seasick...
Nice job but crap music.
Disagree completely. First vid in memory that didn't have awful, grating, distorted rock n roll. Actually felt relaxed while watching carpentry on meth.
Maby one day he will learn to use a die grinder on thoughts inside nails
Click bait much?
yo fail 4 sec to long
So this looked interesting but (a) speeding up the video doesn't mean that it only took 4 minutes and (b) the camera action made me feel sick.
Yeah nobody cares.
Woodglut is a solid company with solid woodworking plans.
It's a speed up
You made it more like "In 4 HOURS"
i hoped for traditional methods.. -1
Vikings didn't invent or have a saw. They used wooden dowels as fasteners. What makes you saw this is a Viking chest, (besides clickbait)?

Kinda dumb, all movement and not one measurement showed and stupid music.
Really nice! Exactly what I'm looking for! Thx
