Ik this video is old but it’s extremely helpful. I suffered a concussion playing for my club team in the winter and now that I am getting back into my high school season, four months later, I’m not the same as I was before being concussed. So I have been relearning through these middle blocker videos.
+ElevateYourselfNow thanks Coach! I'm currently playing middle blocker but have trouble blocking from middle to either power or off side. any tips on footwork to get from side to the other? and also what to look for when blocking the other player in regards to timing and where I position myself to the hitter? thanks! a video with some drills would be great ;) Thanks man keep up the good work
Hey Coach Doony . Thanks for your efforts . Can you show us some ways to practice our timing when spiking as a middle blocker . since our setter is better at giving high tosses than giving short arced ones .
well done video. I will have to watch this a few dozen times to let it sink in properly. Do you already have a video that shows the proper way to run to your proper start position after blocking. My uncertainty makes me hesitate.
Hi Coach Donny, i really find your videos helpful and easy to understand. Just wondering if is it possible that you can make a video on the technique for a slide attack? Thanks
I just started trying out middle and I'm still a beginner pretty much but man, none of this were things I would have figured out on my own. I kept ending up too in front of the ball (trying for 3 steps) and my angles were wrong along with a bunch of stuff.
Hey Coach , can to the blocking foot work and also tips about the beginner blockers and when a hard spiked ball was hit it use flew up on my court all the way back
Does the distance from where you start your approach depend on your height? The instructor here is not as tall as the professional middles he showed in the clips, and their first step of the three step approach (with the left foot) is always in behind of the 3m line. I am asking because I am a rather tall middle who always finds himself too close to the net when trying this approach.
i think so, a lot of the pro middle blocks start about 1 big step away from the 3m line and they usually end up only like about 2/5 across the attack line before the centre court line.
Donny, recently it has been pointed out to me that I"m goofy footed, that is, I do my approach using the reverse footwork (right, left-right). I'm trying to adjust, but after playing goofy footed for years, I find it very difficult to adjust. Any advice of how to best correct this?
when performing a 1, when do you start the approach? i keep jumping too early or too late and it causes me to either miss the ball when swinging or contacting the ball near my wrist.
I am 17, 6'2/6'3 170lb's. Am I too small for MH? Im playing for my highschool, not club so its not as competitive. would i be better off being an outside hitter? I play MH fairly well but my team seems to struggle with our Outside hitters. we also have a 6'4 MH. Should i consider OH?
Coach I'm a middle hitter but i was an opposite before, so my coach is always yelling at me cuz he says i take to many steps and my timing is off....HELP
Work on it. You don't need a ball a net, or a gym. You are probably getting too far off the net. Try: open, cross, then hop with your weight staying forward.
Lol it happens the same to me hahah. When I play opposite i open just a bit, i don´t take the steps straight nor open too much to the right. So when I play middle I always make my steps straight, perpendicular to the net and the timing is faster as the ball travels a smaller distance (so you have to make the steps earlier). Also speak to your setter, maybe he is setting it way too fast for you, so just ask him/her to set softer, and maybe higher. I'm saying this based on my perspective, this works for me but i'm not a coach so this isn't professional advice.
I have a real problem! I can't manage to make the last step, the left step, and I don't know how to fix this problem that doesn't give me the opportunity to spike at my best, can someone help me out?
I accidentally smacked my setter on the head, he got really mad lol
I laughed so hard!
He should
How?????
As he should be
I elbowed my setter's shoulder so hard haha he got a bruise 😂

Never thought about two step approach. When I'm too late I just jump. But today in my next match I gonna try to do the 2 step approach when needed.

I just started trying out middle and I'm still a beginner pretty much but man, none of this were things I would have figured out on my own. I kept ending up too in front of the ball (trying for 3 steps) and my angles were wrong along with a bunch of stuff.

or learn how to hit with the other hand
Hi! Can you make a video on improving blocking timing? I'm 5'11 but I have NEVER blocked a spike. I'm either too early or late. Thanks!
how is your blocking nowadays
Is a front 1, back 1 and shoot, also called an a, b and c ball respectively?
What if they are setting you 2's? In 2's the ball is set in the same spot as 1's but the ball is set higher. How would you approach the ball?
And it is set a little wider i think.
+Nate A I think you should approach the same, just wait a little bit longer before you start your approach so the ball has time to come down
Can you do the positions of a middle blocker in a 5-1 ,
Can middle blocker hit in the right side??
when performing a 1, when do you start the approach? i keep jumping too early or too late and it causes me to either miss the ball when swinging or contacting the ball near my wrist.
