GMBN Tech my chinchilla eats whatever intruders come inside my garage
GMBN Tech how about a guide on what steps to take AFTER it’s stolen? Ie who to contact, sites to look out on etc.
Currently using Legal & General Home Insurance - lost a Specialized Stumpjumper from my Trimetals bike store a few months ago (replaced that with Asgard, highly recomend - Trimetals, not so much.), Legal & General were extremely effective everything was done online sent them photos & proof of purchase (Receipt) bike obviously named as an item on my insurance was 5 years old, purchased for £1500 - insured for £1700 (RRP at the time) forgot how much extra they charged me but it was a pitance something like £10-15 extra a year (yes, year.)... and they agreed to pay the full £1700 despite age etc no arguments.

doddy's lock collection is worth more than my bike lol
Hands up of your feeling super paranoid about your bike being nicked after watching this 😂 🙋🏽♂️🙋🏽♂️🙋🏽♂️
TMBTCHR yep 😂
Yep
yep
@Rusty Kinks I would always tell them to fuck off.
🙋♂️
The 6 dislikes are from bike thieves at home thinking “I would have gotten away with it, if it weren’t for those meddling kids and their Dodd.” 😂🐕
Jess Varey 😂
I’ve only ever had one bike nicked. I was working in the garage fitting something and the guy just walked in, picked it up and just walked off. I never realised until I went looking for my bike. I felt so stupid.
The more deterrents you have the better. Motion lights, fence, locked shed, bikes locked in shed. The more obstacles the better. Also set your strava privacy zones!
Also you scream "I have something really valuable here" what can be contra productive
I recently had my 2018 Norco Sight A3 stolen and lucky enough recovered by police recently. A worthy bunch of tips to note for you all is make your bike as custom as you can with bright coloured parts etc which makes it stand out more. Then take photos of any unique parts you have on your bike. Makes it easier to spot it, if it has been stolen and to identify your bike when it has been recovered. I take regular photos every time I change or put a new part on my bike like a chainguide or new wheels. Keep your receipts for everything you buy for you bike including the bike receipt when you buy a new bike in a safe place for police to show ownership. Also make scanned copies of them on your laptop and on a external storage drive that way you have backup in case your laptop fails.
Congratulations on your recovery, very rare! - can't emphasis the receipt thing enough & make a note the frame number - even if you've given the details to your insurance when initially insuring the bike make sure you keep a record as when you do claim, the insurance company will ask to see the receipt & the frame number. (this is there attempt to get out of paying out)
@SPAZE PARANOIDS !!!! ! No I didn't because local police caught him. Currently waiting for my bike while it sits in an evidence room while we wait for his trial to come up.
Imagine a world where we didnt need this stuff... :(
We truly shouldn't. Somebody took mind right out my garage in broad daylight while I was cooking for my son.
You just imagined what it was like before mass immigration.
@@dtz1000 What a moronic thing to say. Loads of bike thefts in Scotland and it's all by Scottish people.
@@flippy66 Well its kind of different down here in London. There are some places I wouldn't go on my bike in case i get stabbed while riding it. I'm guessing you don't have that problem where you are.
Thanks mass immigration for giving us no go areas where you can get stabbed for your bike.
My Grandfather who lives in a small town in a mountain area once had his bike stolen. He was the type of person who remembers everything. 2 years after his bike was stolen, he saw a similar one while entering a grocery store. He looked at the frame number and instantly recognised as his bike. The bike was not locked up at all so he just took it a drove off. Thankfully, it was just a cheap city bike.
4:26 I'm gonna mark my own house with "vicious dog" and "poor people live here"...problem solved 👌👍
Lol
Thought exactly the same pair!
Property protected by Messrs Smith and Wesson 🤣!
Although I'm 4 years late getting to this channel, the info is timeless.
I have ridden for over 60 years and never yet had my MTB or e-bike stolen.
A large hardware store, farm equipment supplier or big truck-stop will have Grade 70 to 120 hardened chain available that is 22mm diameter.
Do not rely on the clerk as to the Grade. Verify it by reading the specs on the bucket or barrel that the chain will come from.
If you are near commercial shipping docks or barge landings, the riggers may be able to guide you to a supplier.
Depending on your location, it can cost as much as $3 US per link!!
Take 5 minutes and read up online about how to identify chain grade.
The lock will now be the "weak link" in your security.
If you are carrying your bike on a hitch rack, be sure to secure the bike and rack to the vehicle frame. Don't rely on a hitch receiver pin lock alone.
Keep the bike covered at all times when on the hitch/bumper rack.
Put a "WARNING-ALARM" sticker where visible on the back of the tow vehicle and on the bike cover.
Hide an Air Tag or similar device on the bike.
Don't be timid about taking your bike into your hotel room, regardless of how many cameras the staff says there are.
Your battery can cost you $500 or more. Take it to your room if leaving the bike on the rack, day-time or over night while you are away from the vehicle.
At home as a deterrent, I have a large water bowl and heavy collar with chain tether for a dog at both my front and rear entrance doors.
I also have "Security Camera" decals on all ground floor windows and doors. At night when not home, I leave a curtained lighted room visible from the street
with either the radio or TV audio audible from just outside. All approaches to entry are covered by wireless, solar, motion activated LED lights that are out of reach.
Ride far. Ride safely!
Well done. In all my time working in various aspects of security, I don't think anyone has been as conscious about security on the same level as I am.
Well said. I don't think you are getting robbed anytime soon. Please, everyone, pay attention to him, don't ignore it.
Like many other people have said get a cheap bike for doing commutes to work, school, pub etc... I got a bmx for £50 learnt some new skills and tricks at the same time👍
Super useful video, you must have covered pretty much everything there is about bike security. Definitely marking my house with the "danger, get away" tag though.
Excellent. Thanks guys, a thorough insight to safety.
thank you Mr. GMBN for all of that fine and useful info.
Wow. VERY thorough video!
Doddy's a real Belt-and-Suspenders kinda guy when it comes to security--thanks, good vid.
Hey there , I'm a bit late to your channel . But it is great . So much great information. Just watching the locking ya bike up videos . I know you guys know that no lock is fool proof . Locks are for the innocent. So here my point . What you also need to know is that a simple battery drill with a 1/4" drill bit ,will drill out every single Keyser barrel , there all made of brass so they don't corrode, I have lost more keys than I've had breakfasts, all I do is drill out the barrel . Opens every lock I've ever had . Password this info on to the viewers or not . But a pad lock is useless . Love you guys . Thanks
This is truly useful, as I've had my bike stolen 2 months ago which was locked in a town centre I only left it for a couple of minutes, someone else saw it locked aswell it only took them less then 3 minutes in the time they were gone, unfortunately I didn't get it back, I have a new bike now, I have done a couple of the suggestions like insurance, the second I got it and will be looking in to the getting the other one as well.
Another very informative video 👍
This is pertinent information regarding safeguarding valuable property. Also, a chrome grip handled 357 Raging Bull cartridge will outrun potential thieves.
sick vid, keep the coming
Private Strava settings are a good idea. My bikes are insured through pedal cover, really good deal.
excellent tips: THANK YOU!
Absolutely correct about security! I have the same kryptonite chains and two alarms
Great video Doddy. Assetsure are really good for retro ‘collectibles’ if they’re garage queens and not ridden.
The moment he told about the frame number I took some pictures of it with my ID next to it.
SO, when someone steals my bike and it gets found I can prove it's mine.
Much more usefull video than I thought it would be, but individual circumstances differ from one another, some people have VERY limited options of putting any security in for their bikes.
great info , thank you
Thank you Dody for this helpful video !
If you need a big chain lock go to the hardware store and buy the amount of chain that you need and a heavy duty lock.
Then put the chain threw a inner tube to protect your bike.
Seth's bike hacks
I know it’s from Seth’s bike hacks but not a lot of people know about it.
@@Elliott947 true
I would advice against that, as regular chain is not hardened and easier to cut than specific security chains

Much needed video!
You can get some really cool stand alone alarms, they will sound an alarm or send a text, but can be used for a single door, like for a shed.
Like to think my pride & joy is kept as safe & secure as it possibly can be but I still worry 😞
One thing as well is the amount of bikes I see at trail centres left unattended, absolutely crazy. We always make sure someone stands guard if we are nipping in a cafe or something!!
Good advice re: the serial number, didn’t even think of recording that, I’m sure the insurance wouldn’t certainly need it.!!
I’ve just been out and taken a pic of the number 👊👊
I write my name, address, email, phone number, bike make, model and serial number on a water proof piece of paper. Then roll it up and put it inside the left grip or seat post. I do this for all of my bikes.
Great tip about Strava, etc. I hadn't even thought about that.
Great video will definitely be using it to properly get my bike locked up. I recently had my downhill and enduro bike stolen. I'd say the most important thing you can do is register your bike as soon as possible with your insurance. this was vital for me as my enduro bike was only a week old when it was stolen so it goes to show it's not worth being lazy with getting it registered. I would also say motion detection lights are a great addition to have since they will come on whenever you go near them. the last thing I have to say is if it's organised criminals then DO NOT confront them if they're in the process just call the police and wait, as they are likely to be armed especially if you have a dog, and if you catch them they are likely going to come back in a couple weeks and do much worse. I know of people that have caught the criminals on their farms and they've come back and set fire to buildings or things.
I'm lucky enough to never have had any of my families bikes stolen - My house insurance covers all bikes under £2,000 even away from our house but I did need to list my bike (serial number etc). We are covered by Marks & Spencer home insurance (underwritten by AXA I think). Whilst it did put my premium up by about £20 quid a month - I have the confidence that if any or all of our bikes were nicked they would pay out.
It's definitely worth insuring your pride and joy.
Hopefully you will never need to use the insurance but it is worth the peace of mind knowing that you are covered.
Best wishes guys.
Dan
But what if you used the thieves code to mark your house with nothing interesting?🤔
This guy is living in the future 🤯
knowing my luck id end up putting the mark which says loads of cash and jewelry lmao
They aren't going around house to house searching for codes, theyre shared by word of mouth between eachother for later use of the group. I thought of that too though lol
I’d love an episode on the various GPS trackers you can install. I know there’s one that goes inside the bar end and as long as you charge it every now and then I’ve heard it’s great. Thoughts on that?
I have gps on mine and the new x1 lite lok.
Thieves code! Wow learnt something new again 👍👏👏
So helpful
You should do a video on security while away from home, one of my friends bike recently got stolen while locked on a roof rack while camping.. What would you suggest?
Helpful
I stopped using roof racks on my car it’s a big sign outside you’re house saying I bike lives here to thieves.
For a bike lock i'd use a 13mm chain with a Bowley model 543 padlock. The padlock is literally impossible to be picked and the chain is thick enough to withstand an angle grinder long enough
You can also get your rottweilers over night in the shed with the bike or rig a shotgun with a string on the trigger...aiming for the legs so no getaway bike pedal for that intruder.Just thinking out loud I don' t have a shotgun ...but I do have bullies...
Pitbulls also can be a great idea😉
Don’t forget an Arnold shwartzinegger (I don’t care enough to spell his name right) board and put it right inside the shed
You can get a mouse trap to set a shotgun shell, you dont need a gun really.
Lockpickinglawyer said the Oxford Barrier one took longer than most to pick. I was thinking of that for ebikes or more expensive mtb when gtg lunch
Just another tip I recently learned myself.
I bought my first car a few months ago, 1 of the main things it needed to have was a towing hook so I could put on a bike rack. Now it just so happens that the car I ended up buying has blinded rear windows. I also got lucky and when I put the rear seats down I can fit 1 of my bikes in the trunk if I take off a wheel or 2. With the blinded windows and doubling down on the cargo cover it's very tricky to spot my bike in my car. Not impossible to see I have a bike in my car but you would pretty much have to be looking for something in the car anyway, damn near impossible to casually walk by and see I have a bike in my trunk that's more expensive than the car it's in.
TLDR: Keep your bike in your car and not on a rack (if possible) and + points for cargo covers and blinded windows!
Hello to all
Another weak spot is the hinges .
If they're exposed to the outside used stainless steel coach bolts 👍
Hi Doddy, any chance you guys could review security marking systems such as Datatag etc at some point?
I'm looking for some good chian to lock my gravel bike which is also my city commuter. Found some nice motorbike locks with alarms from Kovix that can be also used for bicycles. They got chains and u-locks, I think I will go with chain kovix kcl8-120. But maybe anyone know some other good brands with alarm or some lock to phone notification system?
Need to screw a scaffold plank or something similar to that back wall Doddy, forks are making a right mess of it.
All good tips, esp strava and trailforks, turn off those gps traces near your property
In my experience specialist bike insurers insist that garages are either attached to your house or within the boundary of your house. My garage is 16metres from my boundary with a public pathway inbetween. Although it is visible from my house I cannot get insurance. Any advice or suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks.
Sound advice. Listen up to Doddy you guys!
Bikmo is the best insurance! It's here in germany and austria. i think in the uk too
Aside from delaying tactics, you need a LOUD alarm armed in the place the bikes are kept, it will make it a lot less likely they will spend 10-15 mins messing with your lock with the alarm going off. They can be bought from china from $30.
i am going to a resort for the first time in two weeks..(northstar tahoe). do you lock your bike up while eating lunch or visiting the bike shop ect?
#ASKGMBNTECH
How well work GPS Trackers on/in the Bike?
why are there no good tracking devices that can be placed in or on the bike?
I've seen one in the USA but its aimed at car owners its called XY, if the shape was changed it would if in the bike???
may be theres a bit of money to be had fixing this issue? Cheers doddy
can you do a video on bike anti theft trackers nice video as usual
I bought my bike from halfords and was surprised they didnt offer any insurance plans
I have Simpli Safe security service But I also have my bike attached to a 65 lb bench press with a 20 lb chain and pad lock. Better be fast, super strong or able to outrun my attack Kitty! It's only an REI DRT 2.1 but it's my baby!
Nice jewellery at the end of the vid, just like MR T
there is also veloeye security QR tag and app
Where do you guys put your lock after unlocking your bike? I wrap it on my seat tube, any other better suggestions
Great topic. Thieves suck😡
LOL my garage has the loudest bloody door ever mate 😂 and we can feel it thruought the house
Fogging machines are a great way to reduce premiums if you’re storing your bike in a garage or shed. Also stay clear of the ropes for anything valuable, used a gold rated one to lock my motorbike helmet to my motorbike and the thief was only on camera for 45 seconds including entering the carpark breaking the lock and leaving.
How about covering the ebike also in case parked too long?
Nice content as always but watching this on my TV and the workshop camera is swaying slightly and a bit distracting.
Strava privacy zones! We had a couple of bikes nicked, pretty sure it was because of people seeing where we live on Strava.
What bike hanger do you use Doddy?
I'm planning on getting a 2019 full stache 8 soon and Ive had literally every single one of my bikes I've ever had stolen. luckily none of the bikes have been worth over 1000 dollars but a full stache 8 is worth many times the amount of any bike I've ever owned and it's a very good looking, beefy bike so it'll be a jackpot for a thief. I'm so worried about having it stolen...
In Singapore, our houses are high-rise and we have front doors with metal gates in front of them, so how securely do we need to keep our bikes?
I would like to have a security light in my shed but can't run electric to it .Any ideas 💡 guys .Please help , I live on a main street and before I buy a bike I'd like the security in first .
It's shame the "authorities" are likely to do nothing about it
Set up a decoy bike bike that the thief can take w some effort
#askGMBNtech im looking for a short travel trail smasher and happened upon the DMR Bolt frame, it can be 26" or adapted to run 27.5 (ideal) the single pivot design moves around the BB so it can be a Single speed without needing a chain tensioner - which id like to facilitate. cant find many reviews online and wondered if you have experience with this kind of frame / suspension set design. Thanks lads, Keep up the great work
Could you tell me the link for the thieve's code? I don't see it. Thanks!!!!
My stumpjumper got stolen and it was carried away with the lock still on it 😭😭
I’m in a rented house and can’t really put in a proper ground anchor. Shed Shackle to the rescue!! £50 and basically reinforces your shed wall to allow you to chain the bike to it.
Get a U-lock that is at least 18mm thick like the Kryptonite fahgettaboudit, this lock cannot be removed with a bolt cutter, but the other most important thing is an alarm that can text you when the bike is disturbed so that you can get to it before anything happens, time is the most critical
factor!
I had a bike stolen in the centre of Cardiff, it was a lovely sunny day with hundreds of people walking past as it was outside St David's shopping centre, in my ignorance I used a cheep cable lock, there was a guy sat on the bench looking at me and I felt a little uncomfortable but thought..... Well there's loads of people and it's locked so I'm sure it'll be fine.... 11 minutes later I came out to fine a space where my bike was 🥺 cctv from St David's showing it was the guy watching me on the bench (never heard a peep from the police) 🤬
My homeowners policy protects my bikes against theft (- deductible), but State Farm (USA) does offer a personal property policy that is comprehensive. The premiums are 10% of the value, however. If you have an entry-level to mid-range bike and your primary concern is theft, it may not be worth the additional premium for the comprehensive property. If however, you have 1 or more professional-grade or e-bikes and you take part in higher-risk riding or are riding in traffic (I know that there are several people that own both road and trail bikes), then the comprehensive policy makes more sense.
Loud alarm for starters then beef the door locks and hinges to top quality the bigger the chain and lock the better use at least 3 chains and locks.however the problem now is the theives have a tool called a cordless grinder and all you can do is try to slow them down the locks are no issue anymore to them because of the grinder .bigger locks and chains will slow them down and a theif don't want to spend ages trying to get your bikes
I’m a firm believer in Code of Hammurabi, eye for an eye. So you’d figure that if they steal your bike and get caught, you get to take their own bike. But back then, if you saw someone walking around with new hand, they were caught stealing. They used to cut your hand off. Yikes.
Hey I feel like going on an impromptu ride. Locks and keys and jangling and hahahaha an hour later I'm tired ; )
check out Almax for a decent chain and lock, not cheap but excellent.
I use TD property insurance.
Motorbike insurance approved ground anchor, chain with lock to same standard and CCTV with hard drive in house and online backup. Also if your garage is separated from the house the police might even choose not to attend, if it's part of your house they must attend(UK from experience).
Also rebadge your bike as a Raleigh Grifter. :-)
keep it in the appartment and if it's not in the appartment keep an eye on it all the time.
I put barbed wire wrapped around my handle bar and seat and nails on my pedals, good luck!
I left a brand new trek Roscoe 7 outside my house in my garden for half a hour last week and it was gone ...... I now have a nukeproof scout that lives in the house
One suggestion - with locks you are buying time. The local thieves here will cut through absolutely anything. We use multiple chains and U-locks.
I believe you can use microchips to put on your bike parts. They will be used to keep track of your bike.
Just checked the price to insure my new ebike, more expensive than the family car 🤣
Today was my 2000$ trek marlin, which I just bought got stolen!!! But after an hour I found it, hide in the bushes like 500 meters away.
Iam useing hangman system 1
