Pressure washer is great if you're really eager to update all bearings in your bike. It's really efficient in pushing water and dirt beyond every seal... Rag and warm water, maybe a drop of car shampoo. And if you use car wax after washing the bike, you'll be able to just brush off the mud once it's dried. Forget silicon spray!
May I suggest before wiping the water off, Bounce the bike on it wheels will dislodge more water. (and you will see it on the ground) then wipe the rest off with a microfiber cloth.
I use low pressure hose after most rides. Dry with old towel immediately. If not I at least wipe chain down and Squirt lube it and wipe suspension parts. If my parts accumulate grease I take them off and use an old rag to clean them by hand. Dont like using chemicals if they arent necessary. 33 years mtbing. It works for me.
Ive found that spraying the brush or cleaning rag with the degreaser works better and is more accurate than going willy nilly all over your frame work etc Saves money and saves the re-greasing !
Great video, all tips and little tricks were on point. I’m 57 and thru the years I’ve fallen victim to all of the things you’ve warned about in this video. 👍👍
With the bike industry in trouble and needing to make sales, Enduro Bearings would advise to grab that pressure washer and point it full blast straight at those holes in the top of the headset for that oh-so-kool headset cable routing.
Another to do when you are done and you want to dry it off now is to ride it on the street to get any other water in the bike and then just dry it off normally
very recently got myself a battery powered semilow pressure washer to wash the bikes off before it goes in the van or back of the car. bloody brilliant!
There's nothing better than wheeling a properly clean, well lubed and adjusted bike out for a ride. How some folk can wheel out filthy, gritty, noisy bikes to start a ride is beyond me! Anyway, this video - and at last one that is sensible about pressure washers. They are great tools for the job, if you take a little care with them. Bike specific products can be a tad expensive, and I just use car products mostly, oh and GT 85, of course! The smell... 😍 Pound shop car wash and wax is a hundred times better than any washing up liquid. Whilst washing up liquid will clean your bike, it will only leave a superficial shine. It's designed for cleaning hard greasy surfaces, not paint. I must admit to being a fan of Autoglym's ceramic spray for giving the paint a real shine and protection. Very easy and quick to use.
Pressure washers are amazing tools! As for using car products, it's perfectly safe to use as long as there is no TFR (traffic film remover) or other nasty acids that could strip out the grease from your bike. Also if you are using a wash and wax version of car shampoo that could leave a residue on the disc, but other than that they are perfectly safe! 👍 If your brakes aren't squeaky after the ceramic spray and GT85 you need to share your secrets with us! 🤘
Yes I'm wary of disc contamination, so am very careful around them, and use disc brake cleaner on the rotors before the final rinse. GT 85 and the Ceramic spray get sprayed onto a cloth or foam applicator pad to avoid them getting anywhere they shouldn't!
For some stuff, like the cassette, it's so easy to remove them I just take the wheels off, remove the cassette and clean it off the bike. It's also easier to get into areas near the bottom bracket and fork with the wheels removed. I will do an initial spray with the garden hose, then bring the bike into my workshop on the stand, remove the wheels and clean with a hand bottle spray and rags. I don't buy any of these products for cleaning, just a degreaser for the cassette and other drivetrain parts.
I treat most surfaces with automotive sealant (syn wax alternative). I then just don't wash the bike. Even if I put it away wet, the stuck on mud sheds over the course of the next rides. That said, I don't take the bike in any sort of living space. Having ditched the cleaning routine, I notice that I've been able to get full life out of many components that normally would suffer from premature failure or really faded performance. Less mysterious creaks, like from pedal or headset area. Tires seem to work better. Things don't look as faded as soon. Not going to go back to cleaning agents--my next cleaning will likely just be to reapply a higher end coating, like ceramic, which I expect to be needed in a year.
Washing your bike will always contribute to wear as it will always remove grease from areas you can't easily return it to. Such as headsets, pivot hardware and wheel bearings. A gentle brush of dried on mud won't wreck the paint, especially if you've got invis. As the owner of a bike workshop though my opinion is use the pressure washer at the carwash all over the bike and put it away wet... 🤑
I used to use all the products (waste of time and money imo) now my local garage has put in a pressure washer with a powerfoam mode, its the best thing ever. 2 quid 5min and im done, powerfoam then a high pressure rinse (avoiding seals) blasting down the calipers has made my brakes work better and squeal free. I just degrease the chain before i go and give it a dry when i get home and lube the chain with a m4 plus maintenance spray, its mega cos u dont get all that crap clogging up your jockey wheels ect and you know its clearing the water out, penetrating the chain rollers and lubricating them.
It's actually quite small bike fits there only in certain position but it's nice and snug so it holds still. During winter I have to remove my wheels so I won't make scratches all over it with my spike tires.@@deathrodamus9608
This is overthinking it , keep your chain and stanchions clean dont wash your whole bike every ride , a brush is fine if you have invisi frame protection . Bike washing products are bullshit too just use water , preferably a low pressure hose . Ive been riding for seveeal decades. Bike wash stuff is marketing bull.
I have not washed a bike in 20 years except in my shower. No car wáshes nearby and I live in an apartment. In the winter I have to clean the tub everyday.
Tried looking for the ergon saddle shown in this video but can’t find it 🤷🏽♂️ can someone recommend me any sites or places I can have a look please thanks 🙏🏽
I have been pressure washing my bikes for 20 years with not even a single minor issue with it. Just don't be a moron and focus the stream from close range and you will be fine. Takes me 5 minutes to get it completely clean up to the chain. Never will do it another way.
Presoak with dish washing liquid (Dawn is best), then a 3,000 pound pressure washer with the red tip, then drop the bike a dozen times to get the drops off, finally hit with air compressor. I do this once a year, if the bike needs it or not.
Nobody needs a workstand to clean ya bike, just lean it against a wall or turn it upside down on the ground...I've been riding decades and Never used a stand to clean my bikes...Silly info...Ha !!

Lube your chain with sewing machine oil and it will be great.Any other debate about the chain is nonsence. The lighter the chain, the sooner will wear out so dont bang your heads .You tubers present you fancy chemistry in smarter or dumber way for money so you dont wanna listen to that.Use old cotton clothes ,spray bottle with watter, any smaller brushes etc.Dont waste your money cause someone told you to.
Berm peak debunked the claim about it blasting grease out and also that even at almost point blank spraying on the cassette, bottom bracket ect ect doesnt harm the bike at all already 3 years ago. True about the paint but I mean using a pressure washer aint rocket science, just some common sense and you'll be fine.
Do you know of any other mistakes people make when washing their bikes? Are you for or against pressure washers?
Pressure washer is great if you're really eager to update all bearings in your bike. It's really efficient in pushing water and dirt beyond every seal... Rag and warm water, maybe a drop of car shampoo. And if you use car wax after washing the bike, you'll be able to just brush off the mud once it's dried. Forget silicon spray!
As long as you stay back a bit I've never had problems with a car wash sprayer.
Some bike degreasers are hydrocarbon based and also can contaminate brakes with residue. So be careful with your degreasers as well as your lubes.
One mistake is: Not washing the bike for its whole lifetime. Which is what I'm doing right now. I fucking hate washing my bike.
May I suggest before wiping the water off, Bounce the bike on it wheels will dislodge more water. (and you will see it on the ground) then wipe the rest off with a microfiber cloth.
Great tip, or you can use a leaf blower like Blake! 💨🍂

Agreed, use the bottom of a soda bottle, spray degreaser in there and then brush on with paintbrush 👍
I use clean rags wrapped around the discs & calipers when using sprays around the bike to help minimize contamination from overspray

With the bike industry in trouble and needing to make sales, Enduro Bearings would advise to grab that pressure washer and point it full blast straight at those holes in the top of the headset for that oh-so-kool headset cable routing.
That's one way to sell more bearings! 😂
I use car products. Put some wax on for easy cleaning afterwards. And don’t forget to pre lube the chain every single time after a wash!
I do to, don't see many people talk about it. It's super easy with the spray waxes too.
Battery powered leaf blower for drying off!
Another to do when you are done and you want to dry it off now is to ride it on the street to get any other water in the bike and then just dry it off normally
For drying, I use a leaf blower - works extremely well and you don't have to wash the rags in cold water

I use out of those 1-2 gallon pump sprayers instead of a pressure washer
These are amazing, and portable! You could even upgrade to a portable pressure washer to save your arms 🤘
Got my stand at Lidl for $40 ... 👍👍
Do you know what would stop your drivetrain going rusty if you put the bike away a bit wet? Not cleaning all the grease off it
For some stuff, like the cassette, it's so easy to remove them I just take the wheels off, remove the cassette and clean it off the bike. It's also easier to get into areas near the bottom bracket and fork with the wheels removed.

How many wave washers do you get through?
Very useful info 👍🏼

i also use an air compressor to blow away water from chain, derailleur, callipers. 😊
Great suggestion, don't put it too close though as it can blow the grease out of your bearings!

Karcher OC3 is the best money I’ve spent on bike cleaning. Then wax the chain instead of grease and ceramic coat the bike.
My only washing option is pretty much in my bathroom with bide shower. I found pretty good routine to it though so thats fine.
Your bathroom must be large, to be able to fit a bike in there.
It's actually quite small bike fits there only in certain position but it's nice and snug so it holds still. During winter I have to remove my wheels so I won't make scratches all over it with my spike tires.@@deathrodamus9608
I used to use a stick off the ground to scrape the grease off of my derailleurs lol.
Resourceful!
I coat my bikes in car polish so just using a garden hose gets rid of pretty much all the dirt with no products
You should make cleaner by mixing kitchen soap with water
I keep mine so waxed that if you try to lift it by the top tube your hand will slide forward on it and get pinched in the welds 👍
Loved seeing Pils using a Mony and snow brush, to clean his steed 😂😂😂
Any tips for people that live in flats or apartments? What's the best bet, a petrol station?
Use disc rotor covers or a grime guard to keep degreaser and lube, in fact everything, off your brake discs!
Great suggestion, there are a few brands out there that sell disc brake guards!
This is overthinking it , keep your chain and stanchions clean dont wash your whole bike every ride , a brush is fine if you have invisi frame protection . ^pretty much this. A commute on the wet road cleans the frame.
@@Cous1nJack I’m in California so we don’t have that

Car details products is best way to go
This is nearly identical to the one GCN put out a week or two ago.
But why does Richard look like the tall guy from Home alone?
Man’s gotta make a living
Right so with the brakes, after cleaning it with water, do I just dry it off with a cloth and then leave it? Or do I put something on it?
@@British_Bruv leave the brakes alone
is car cleaner ok to use im new
Products other than peatys are available fenwicks is best ive ever used and ive used a few
So you’re telling me the secret is wet, soap, rinse and don’t get the fancy soap on the fragile bits.
Indeed 😳
Thank you! Someone showed me how to use p17 properly. 😂
Waaay too much work. Worse than having a boat!

This one is branding heavy so people can see what make it is :) It's a standard Ergon SMC Men's though :)

You're supposed to wash em?
They are only bearings, Just wash them and replace when needed.
Don't forget to take your seat post out and tip the bike upsidedown.
Easy fix: completely disassemble your bike once a month, clean it and put it back
Yeah, nah....It works just fine leaning against something. Just turn it around to do the other side and done 🤷 ✔️
Messed up my brakes using a lube spray All of the sudden they just weak. Live and learn I suppose

This is deja vu of how not to wash your bike featured by yours truly. #CrackaMonny
How do I wash my bike when I have only limited access to water? I can't waste 20 Liters of Water just like that.
Windex. No I'm not kidding
Start waxing the chain!! Oil is a dirt magnet!! So almost deagreaser is not needed.
Definitely the best thing is to wax the chain. Much smoother gear changes too.
