Last week I played through this again for the first time in MANY years, like since the PS2 era. The villagers kept talking about the Mardan Garyan and then even Xiao's slingshot Steve randomly told me their favorite food was poisonous apples. Since I had one, I said screw it, and went fishing with one in the morning like as soon as I got to Matataki Village. I got one on my first try and didn't have to guess a trap ever again for the remaining 80% of the game. Moral of the story: Always listen to Steve.
Never more than 30 refreshes? My man over 4 reloads of the area I've done 60 and not had a single Mardans, I'm cursed Edit: scratch that, got to 65 and it gave me a Mardan. Ooooooof
if you are able to nab a bandit slingshot for xiao by the second dungeon (I always manage to get them in drans cave) then the witches are the perfect thing to farm
Mardans are easy. They are the only thing that eats poison apples. The barons are a little trickier. Everything eats potato cakes. (I'd even try it). Bring a bunch of mellow bananas, throbbing cherries, and gooey peaches. When you find a fish in the muska lacka pond that won't eat a throbbing cherry OR a poison apple, use the bananas and peaches to catch the other three fish first, that way you don't feed potato cakes to the whole neighborhood. Then you can catch the baron at your own leisure.
Currently trying to plat this game and found this vid, just wanna say your voice is perfect for these tutorial type videos and this really helped a lot! Keep it up :)
So I've been trying to get a SINGLE mardens for about an hour and a half. Switching between various guides and the game. I've reset Oasis about 60 times now with not a single Mardens spawn. This minigame can eat my ENTIRE ass hole through a bendy straw lmao thanks for the guide anyway my man you worked hard on this and I appreciate it. Edit: nevermind, got my first one at 65 lmao damn. edit 2: 2 hours later, i've gotten one marden, one baron, and 2 other fish. nothing else will do anything but nibble its way through my bait. This is the worst damn minigame lmao
I'm really sorry to hear about your luck with getting the marden's / barons! The game's RNG can certainly be quite cruel at times. Worst case I end up just loading up a video to watch on the side to get through the grind of having to get them. Here's hoping your luck improves!
This vid does cover most of the bases but a couple things that weren't mentioned. Barons are not necessarily that large. I caught several under 90cm and they were not the "largest" fish in the spawn. There was bigger fish in the pond with them. A lot of internet rumors claim Barons are "always huge". The only sure fit way to know is by bait testing. Also its probably best to use a peach or bomb nut as your test bait. Minions are worth more in gold than in fishing points. Also, don't place the trees in the muska racka pond. While this will prevent the 100% completion it doesn't affect requests results. You can navigate around better without all those stupid bushes in the way.
Finally got to Musk's LaRacka and first floor had the Oasis! Using the guide, took a while but got a Maryon and then right after that, same pond load, a Baron! That was nice. Just need the witches to cough up some poisonous apples now, which they're not wanting to do even though I'm using my steal attachment on the wooden slingshot to get as many hits in as I can.
Noice Barons can actually reach out nearly to 900 points I've caught one that was 867 points I play dark cloud on Pcsx2 emulator but still love this guide. Keep up the great work Edit: was fishing and caught 2 Mardans in the lake with the same fish
I must be extremely lucky or something 😂😂😂I tried my first cast with potato cake and pulled a Baron Garayan😳 it's my first time trying fishing in this game
This guide is great! I started by doing all the steps, but figured out I can spot a Baron easily. They are so huge the stand out big time. I just enter and exit the fish minigame over and over until I see him. He pops up every 20-25 entries of the minigame. I am saving a lot of time this way since there's no time consuming trying to figure out if it's a Mardan or not. Also, Baron's don't seem to like poison apples. Potato Cakes only and I find the most frustrating part is keeping my potato cakes away from cull fish while trying to catch my baron. Also, I'm playing on an emulator so the load time to enter the minigame is almost instant. Not sure how long it is on console, but I can understand how my method could take longer depending on load times.
I was having such a hard time with this until I watched this video and then my next trip to the oasis I got the fish. Thank you for the video it saved me from pulling out my hair. 😂
!!! You dont need Minons, BTW!!! Ive tested it myself, Throbbing cherries work at separating Dens from Barons. You can just buy Throbbing Cherry at Lana's shop.
okay so. third comment. caught a few barons. the smallest one was 101 cm so that was surprising, and this was in a pool that had a 174 cm den as well. and another time had a Baron and mardan spawn in the same pool. tested both out with mellow bananas (minon are glitched for me on the emulator) and they both refused so that was hella surprising I just wish I had been recording it
and another one. I hope I'm not annoying at this point. just caught a 69cm Baron garayan. and if you think I'm joking cause of the number I screen recorded it.

I have some things about Baron that are interesting. for context I no longer have my ps2 so I play on an emulator. to speed up the process of catching these garayans I would save state in front of the sign post and would load state everytime I didn't get one. and this went on for days not getting any big enough fish to be a Baron. I then thought to myself maybe loading the state was the wrong thing. so I did it the old fashioned way of quitting out and resetting it. within 5 minutes I got a massive fish, wasn't a Baron but it was 140 something in length. the very next reset I got a Baron. I know this is basically the standard way but it surprised me what a difference the resetting had.
You can easily get 65k gold or gilia or whatever the hell its called and just buy all the bait pretty easily. It takes maybe a hour to get 65k which is max money on this game and after that you can continously get more money without glitches or hacks or whatever... simply sell all your shit until you get 5k or so it doesn't matter you can do this with 100 coins. Anyways go to the first dungeon in the game and pick a floor of your choice id recommend a lower floor. Save your game before you go into the dungeon. Now you are going to run around the dungeon and look for the blue circles on the floor id say a good 30% of the time they will double your money once that happens use escape powder save your game and rinse and repeat. Keep 35k at all times never spend it that way you can go back and just double your money again anytime you want. A good thing to do is buy the piles of gold for 1000 and just jam your bank full of them then buy whatever you want whenever you want. Edit: fuck grammar..
They're pretty good, I believe they can build up into one of the final weapons. I'd have to check the weapon build sheet but they are solid. I mostly fish for items to slot into the weapons.
It's unlimited the amount you can get. However, they can be very rare at times, and you can have full in-game days without getting a single bite. Patience is your only friend, unfortunately. Sometimes you're lucky, sometimes, not so much.
For the pal version of this game there is a problem using potato cake as a bait, as it dissapears when selecting it as a bait... so is there any other bait to catch that specific fish? Its my last trophy to get for unlocking platinum trophy... thanks in advance.

Oh, it's real! Just make sure you're fishing in the right spots as shown in the video, and at the correct time of day. Quickest way is those apples, just keep backing out and coming back in an testing the waters with it. Potato cakes are also not a bad option.
This is horseshit -_- Is this exclusively a remake thing? Ive been hunting at dusk and I can’t catch nothing but nigies or whatever the hell theyre called. I reset every time dusk ends and load up so o don’t run out of patato bait. So frustrating your actually better off saving carrots and catching umadarakas at the peanut pond in matataki village it’s less time consuming at you at least get 90-110 easy per catch.

the best thing about mardan is that it is the *only* fish that bites the apple. so it can also be used as a big fish tester.

AND you CAN find Barons in the Waterfall. NOT as often. But early on in the game, they're easier to find. Go at night.

Using the save states in PCSX2 isn’t a reset it puts you right back in that exact moment with the same predetermined odds
