    You truly are a GENIUS at making all these (normally obscure/abstract) composition concepts UNDERSTANDABLE, bringing them down-to-earth - to LIFE! Especially your "before/after"s - I honestly think - going forward - I now know what to LOOK FOR when I'm composing a shot (i.e. rather than just guess and/or rely on - ever fallible - instinct to add a prop, move it, etc. That plus... lol, I now have a very kewl new uppity word to toss around at dinner parties: photographic SALIENCE! ;) So thanks for ALL that!

    hi, recently found your site and loving it, so inspiring, I have a question if I may, when you take an image of a cooked meal do you get a chance to eat it?, do you cook for your family and make extra for the shot or is the meal made for the shot, photographed when hot and then more cooked for the family, you are a talented photographer and chef, keep up the good work.

      I can't speak for her obviously but I do food photography as well, though not professionally like her. My pictures are often of leftovers or if it is something small like a cookie or a bowl of fruit, I pull it out fresh. It is really a personal choice but I'm sure as a professional she often does more specialized made for shot food because it most likely looks more fresh and presentable. I usually will eat most of my food after unless it is something that isn't really good after a possible extended shoot. Anyway, hope you have a wonderful day.

    This is so great but... I would love if you could explain this cutting things off when you frame your images.
    When I shoot people, sports, landscape and so on I try my best to not cut off things in my frame.
    For example you do not want to cut off a hand or a foot of a person... am I making sense?
    In food photography you deliberately show half a cup of something, half or just a part of a bottle, greens and what not to some how extend the image outside the frame.
    I’m so green to food photography but I really try to learn from you 👍😃

    Fantastic helpful video, Joanie 🙌🏼 @The Bite Shot
    Two questions:
    1) At 7:46 Do you mean that if you have a bright image you could choose to put the darker spot on where you want your focus? No, that doesn't sound right😜 Could you please explain what you mean when you talk about here at 7:46? Thank you.
    2) I am thinking about buying the book but there are SO many great books you want to get... ☆ So my question - do you think you have covered the key take aways from the book (I'm sure there are lots of other great content, but the main take aways) with your (AWESOME!) January series?
    Thanks so much for this series! Composition is definitely my favorite topic and for my sake you could make 50 more videos all about composition and I'd be eating them 3 times a day😄🙌🏼

    I love the whole series on composition. However, I'm struggling with this burger images at about 7.50 min in. Discussing the lines, I find that the central burger leads my eye directly to the burger in the back. The fries are almost as bright as the bun in front and it challenges my attention. The line leads me out of the image rather than redirecting me back to the central burger. The images are the left I find are so much darker than the right that my eye again is carried over to the weight of the right side of the image. The negative space above the burger feels too empty for me and doesn't keep my eyes on the subject.

  • @dr.westwood
    @dr.westwood 5 років тому

    I couldn't help but notice something about your discussion on framing. When you first mentioned framing and put up the image, I wasn't expecting you to talk about objects creating of the frames. That isn't what I first saw, but when you pointed it out, it become obvious. What I noticed first was something you didn't mention. I couldn't help notice that the framing with a frame (multiple layered frames, really) also contained a frame using light and shadow. The burgers on the board were more brightly lit than everything around it, creating a frame as well. I was expecting that to be what you were going to discuss, and found it interesting that it was omitted. Was it intentional and discussed at length in another video I haven't got to yet? Or did maybe it not apply to this particular discussion? Or maybe I am the only one who noticed it? Either way, these composition videos have been very helpful. I'm just learning about food photography, and these are already giving me ideas to improve my very poor IG food photos. Thank you for doing this.
