The Morgan Plus 4 is a Brand New, 70-year-old Sports Car - One Take
Вставка
- Опубліковано 10 тра 2020
- This is the 2019 Morgan Plus 4, which is still sold in 2020 here in the United States. The 2019 model marks the seventieth anniversary of the Plus 4, a brand new, seventy-year old car. Unlike the 911, which has evolved, the Plus 4 has not. It is as close as you can get to buying an authentic car from the 50's but with a semblance of modern reliability, at least in the powertrain. Lightweight, analog, and keeping you at one with the elements, the Plus 4 is one of the most charming, smile inducing experiences you can have in a car, even if it is objectively, absolutely terrible.

that hood camera looks sick
“It’s like some great gatsby shit” that’s exactly why this thing is so damn cool. This is a machine that anyone can appreciate.
I want that quote on a poster
In the UK you get a BMW engine
Alex Roy: You meet all kinds of people in a Morgan; woodworkers, paramedics, accident investigation experts. 😂
Indeed, found it funny with the end clip ad, fight tickets ... in a Morgan... going to slow?
A basic, bare bones classic car from the 1950s, still making till today. I love it!😍
Not really a good car
@@allensaunders449 but an amazing experience to drive.
Totally agree! It’s not about how capable a car is it’s about the experience! Hence the values of true 50s sports cars over modern sports cars
Allen Saunders it’s amazing not good, it’s so fun
Allen Saunders you just don’t know shit
Also, Morgan might be one of the last car companies that truly understand the value of making a sports car centered around the driving experience rather than performance numbers.
Sean Haley Mazda does a pretty solid job with the ND. But they’re slowly adding all kinds of electronic nannies. blind spot monitoring in a tiny car like that lol 🙃
All hand crafted out of Malvern,England.
Imma be 17 in June...bet you never expected someone whos almost 17 to want this
@@NDEEZMiata If you need blind spot monitoring - don't drive a Morgan! ;-)
Morgans are the only cars where I absolute do not give a damn about wha't is on the spec sheet. The 0-62 can be 10 years (not seconds, YEARS) for all I care, but if it makes me feel special... I'll fucking take it!
I would so love one of these. And I would totally rock the leather jacket, the white scarf, the hat, the whole look. We have so many great 55mph roads where I am, this thing would be a blast where a truly fast car is almost boring.
Hate haha
Jay Leno's comment would apply here, "...I like to be able to watch the tach needle sweep across the dial rather than hit the throttle through two gears and go to prison." Not exactly word-for-word but his thought is well taken. In this car, the driver can enjoy the freedom of open air driving on a sunny day, savoring the sounds, sensations, and the scenery. Not the greatest for freeway life but outside of the urban confines, it's very enjoyable.
@@MrGaryGG48 Exactly!
@@MrGaryGG48 This is not the kind of car that you take on the motorway/freeway it is one that you take on the back roads the twistier the better :)
Everyone: 70 years old model?!
Morgan: If it ain't broke don't fix it!
Shouldve applies that logic to the land rover defender too but instead the indians ruined a legend. Probably as payback to be honest ahhaha.
Stefan Cupovic Tata only give money to them. They don’t design the cars in any way.
@@stefanfreestylez Here in the EU very small production car companies can get away without fulfilling a lot of safety and emission standards. Caterhams don't need airbags for instance. The Landrover is not a small production run, so they had to redesign it around modern standards to get it road legal. With some 500 Million people the EU is not a small market ...
@@VolkerHett goddam EU aka fourth reich -_- ruining all the fun stuff in life
@@stefanfreestylez Totally different to free countries like Kuba, where they don't care about cars and environment, isn't it?
Well if its made out of wood, why would it not have leaf springs?
robert woodliff - I see what you did there...
Very good
You got to the root of the problem there...
Wood you kindly explain the stem of your point
"Puts a smile on my face like no other car at any price".
Perfect summary Matt!
Absolutely love the concept of this thing. However a $90k price tag feels like a lot of sacrifice when compared to other driving experiences. This IS nearly impossible to replicate though. Great nuanced review Matt!
Matt: "On one hand, objectively, it's terrible."
Everyone: SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY
Also Matt: "It's got all those sensations you want."
Cool video.
The new Plus Four has 7" more legroom so you can probably drive with shoes next time.
Its feels faster because there is no wind protection, like my S2000. I think i’m doing 150 mph on the freeway with the top down, i look down at the speedo and it says 57 mph, then a Jeep Wrangler passes me but I don’t care. Try and wipe the smile off my face
Sounds like a fun car
This is also the Miata life style, one of the only cars i get passed by in minivans and am grinning ear to ear
3 companies and Morgan is brilliantly accurate.
But it was Soichiro Honda who said it. The guy who founded Honda.
@@fraserwright9482 Yup - exactly!
Sunglasses... You mean driving googles!!
The Morgan Three Wheeler is among my dream cars. Watching videos of these never gets old. I wish I could own one someday.
The best part about these is to configure it. I went to buy one with my uncle when I was a teenager in 92, the order process took over 2 hours just to go through the endless possibilities. He waited 5 years to have it delivered. Best car I ever drove. It is an occasion at any speed.
I think I could live the rest of my life owning one of these.
"That's a '56 model, right?" Actually it's a 2019.
You'd five so many people aneurysms
Hey, I’ve been keeping one of those Triumph engines running for 25 years. They’re not so bad!!
The audio on this one is impressive. Bravo, Matt!
Watching an American attempt donuts in a Morgan; "Morgans are not intended for ungentlemanly motoring".
ALSO-RAN ! It was made right by the Land Rover factory
The UK had no speed limits from 1st January 1931 until 1934 when they re-introduced a limit in built-up areas (30mph). All other roads remained clear of speed limits until 1965, when the 70mph limit was enforced on motorways (freeways) and 60mph on all other types of road outside of villages, towns and cities. So when the Plus 4 was launched in the 1950s it could lawfully be driven flat-out, but there was (and still is) a Dangerous Driving law which could be used against the driver if the speed was deemed to be excessive. One of the reasons that a speed limit was introduced in the mid-1960s was because Jaguar had an E-Type drive at over 150mph on the M1 motorway.
The 2021 model looks so exciting! 0-60 in 4.9 seconds and it gets up to 150 mph! The chassis is 100% more rigid, it’s got a Bmw turbo 4 cylinder with 255 hp and 296 lb-ft of torque, and it still has a manual gearbox unlike the plus 6!
Thank you so much for a great review. I’m currently stuck in UK lockdown and my Plus 4 hasn’t been out for weeks (feels a lot longer!) . I watched the video with an ever increasing smile on my face and now looking forward more than ever to getting out for some topless action 🤭
I want one of these so bad (have since I was a kid) mabe someday I'll get me one. Props to them for continuing to build them in the way that they do. Even if there are easier and more modern methods, they continue building these cars with the same pride and methods as those before them.
I've been lucky enough to visit the factory/shed /cottage, maybe 15 years ago. Arrived during the morning break and a couple of workers at their stations with their feet up having a snooze. Priceless. one of my motoring highlights. Very fond memories.
When i had just turned 19, the shop i was working at got contracted to restore one from 1966. An original Plus4. My god was that thing a wild ride to drive. Tiny little carriage wheels and a manual gearbox with a tiny little carbureted ford four cylinder. That thing was wiiiiiild to drive
Matt, THANK YOU! This was a very well done review on a very special car. You were speaking exactly how I would describe driving my 1971 Triumph Spitfire, but like you said, with a bit more speed and no break-down pucker factor. A very refreshing review on this back to basics car. Thank you for bringing this to us - long live Morgan!!
I hit the "thumb up" button even before I watched the video.) It's really anty-assisting you to drive, but I guess it does add up to the unique experience.) It's such a rare, very old school and aesthetically pleasing car! I would like to thank you for choosing it and review it for us!!! Big smile on my face after I've finally watched it. Two thumbs up, sir!
I want a Morgan more than many other cars. Maybe some day. This made me smile from start to finish. I love the color of this one. Thank you.
Never has Matt's sartorial aesthetic and the One Take vehicle meshed so well.
He is driving the britishest of British cars, wearing a jacket with a German flag on it. It couldn't clash more if it tried.
superkjell The British Royal family is very much German. Should look into the activities of some of the British Royals during WW2
@@Backroad-Bomber The only British Royal with a spotted record with regards to WW2 was the Duke of Windsor, very much the black sheep of the family. And they're not really German - in as much as the last British Monarch not to be born in Britain was George II who was born in 1683. By that measure America isn't American.
@@Backroad-Bomber Do you mean decorated for bravery for his service in the Royal Navy Prince Phillip, volunteered for service as a driver and mechanic in the Auxiliary Territorial Service, Queen Elizabeth, killed in an air crash on service with the RAF Prince George, Duke of Kent, wounded during the battle of France, Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester? Or maybe just Louis Mountbatten, who ended the war as Supreme Allied Commander of the Southeast Asia Theatre after long and distinguished service in the Royal Navy?
The Sport Wire Wheels are a MUST HAVE option !!!
Thank You! You managed to connect me, to the Morgan which you had become wonderfully connected to. Just a pleasure to "drive" with you & this Morgan. Cheers Mate!...
My dad had a 1960 Bugeye Sprite that I drove whenever it ran. I want the 2020 "Plus Four" as bad as I have ever wanted any car.
The new interior is rather excessively BMW, though.
Having owned a Morgan Plus 8, and currently a 3 wheeler, I have to say good job with the descriptive review Matt
Nice cars!
NC miata Transmission getting some much needed love
Best Morgan drive video I've seen yet. My favorite all time car. If I win a big lottery, Im buying one of these and a 1934 plus 4, 4 seater and have Morgan Co, make it all originally new (only with a 5 speed tranny and front discs) . The Morgan is the classiest car there has ever been, with the long hood and sweeping fenders. It looks great with the top down or up. Thanks for the fun ride .
This is very similar sounding to driving my Austin Healey Sprite, except with terrible suspension and chassis. The sensations are spot on, you feel like you are going fast everywhere, the sounds are brilliant, the controls have personality, and you feel completely involved in the driving process. I highly recommend any British sports car.
ugh that rider's body positioning was driving me nuts.
Yeah, leaning the bike and trying to keep their torso and head perpendicular to the ground. No wonder they are so slow.
Could be their first ever open road ride, who knows.
@@MangoVisionn did you watch? Matt literally said the guy flew by a few minutes before. Not his first ride, just a noob.
One of the greatest moments of my life was cruising the freeway in Detroit, driving alongside a black Morgan Aero Supersport. Life is complete
I've had my Morgan +4 for 50 years. I paid $2400 for it way back then. It would do 130 mph with the windshield off (small Brooklands screen), and actually feels very stable at that speed. With the windshield on, it would only do 115. Because the engine is so far back, it really digs in and can hold its own against much more powerful cars in a drag race. Not bad in the snow either (Michigan winters). Corners flat as a pancake, too and very nice on a track. There really is nothing else in the whole world quite like it.
Ha, I live about 10 miles from Malvern here in the UK. That Morgan has gone a long way, glad you enjoyed the drive.
you can tell how much fun matt has had just by the looks on his face, and man i really like that morgan and i can't believe how good they made that ford engine sound :)
I love how this car looks
One of my dream cars is a Morgan! I’m partial to the Aero but this would do just fine!
My Aunt always wanted her neighbor’s Yellow “Morgan Woodframe”. She was telling me about it the last time she visited and that it was her dream car. Later the next day we ended up seeing a brand new yellow Morgan Plus4 when I was taking her to the beach. Crazy that they’re in production again
What do you mean "again"? Morgan have been producing these for decades without interruption. Fortunately the waiting list is now only a few months, it used to be a few years.
That hood view!!! Amazing
I know someone who died in a Morgan from what should have been just a ‘fender bender’ when he was T bonded at a junction... keep that in mind along with the lack of ABS, traction control or airbag... treat it as a car with the safety features of a pre 2000’s bike
of course; sorry for your friend but that should really be the kind of thing you can discern simply from looking at it.
Several years ago I owned a Ural sidecar motorcycle, brand new in 2012, but built nearly the same way since the 1940s, with minor refinements over the decades. It was a comparable experience to the Morgan in that the most frequent question I got was "What year is that?" People were blown away that it was modern. It wasn't a replica or a retro design. It was a genuine piece of history, newly built.
As far as 4 cylinders go, that exhaust sounds amazing. Or just good period. Finely tuned and refined sound.
Without question Morgans deliver the biggest smiles while still within the speed limit. But never fail to surprise all when you hit the throttle.
Honestly the car is awesome. But I was kinda enthralled by the notebook you were reading from. Seemed satisfying.
Moleskin
Very much looking forward to your review of the new PlusFour manual!!
That interior is so beautiful
I’ve got a 4 mile commute and I daily an MGB I 100% agree a fantastic way to start and end a work day... much more of a drive... no way 🤣
12:12 "Car Costume". Loved it! Make it a Tshirt
I never got Morgan as a kid, but the older I get the more I appreciate what the company does and stands for.
I freaking LOVE mine (3-wheeler, when it works... which it presently does not). Can't wait until the new Plus Four comes to the US!
The Royal Enfield of cars... Love it.
I had a 52 Plus 4 and the chassis was not wood. Just like the one shown here only the body substructure was wood. Much of the wood needed to be replaced on mine so I became very familiar with it. One of the cars I wish I would have kept.
Can't wait for the Plus 6!!! It's literally on my list of cars to own.
Not metaphorically on your list right? Cause we were all wondering, thanks for clarifying
Those wheels just look fantastic.
Best hood view ever featured.
Been hearing about it on the podcast, now I gotta watch
A beautiful machine. Absolutely stunning color. Thanks.
that "donut" cracked me up
Cheers Matt, great video. There's something very charming about a niche product that nails its brief as thoroughly as Morgan does. They aren't cheap, to make or to buy, but on the flip side they do hold their value very well. I'd take a lower end Caterham over this though, less class, more fast. Keep well. :)
Awesome car, I love modernised old-school cars, I live pretty close to the Morgan factory
I literally saw this exact car on the 405 back in November hahaha. I have an exact pic of this car driving next to me, the owner waved to me after I gave him a thumbs up
Love the color! It would look good with black spoked wheels too.
Love the style of these cars, I had no idea such crasftsmanship goes into those Morgan’s !
steven miner yoooo!😂😂😂
They are hand built, body panels crafted the old way, wood frame crafted using jigs, proper old school stuff. But they are also modern, a lot of the interior parts are 3D printed.
I've driven a Out going plus4 and the new plus six. And they are world's apart the new CX platform is world changing for the company. The new car is actually sporting in today standards where the old car isnt. The old car can take you on a picnic Or a day trip along the southern coast. The new one can shine on a track day, it's so much better. Whether it's so much more Morgan well that's for you to decide.
I own a Morgan Roadster 3.7 V6 - you have perfectly captured the Morgan experience in this review “the perfect amount of bad to make it AMAZING!” Warmest regards from London (p.s. please please don’t inject disinfectant) 🏆🤣🏆
6:10 is the parking lot for strawberry peak. did that hike a few months ago :)
I think it's great although 90k is kinda insane, I do think some semi-sticky tires would make this fun.. and a very visceral experience. Keep up the great work you do and stay safe tst.. love the ticket fighting site need to use them more often!!!
It's hand made, not on a production line. by skilled workers who are paid well. Your basically buying the equivalent of a high end supercar. But without the high end price tag. And trust me you get more attention in a Morgan than anyone ever could in a lambo.
Matt I really like your bronze Bell & Ross watch!!!
loaner from Crown and Caliber. It seemed appropriate to wear a watch meant to remind you of bronze diving helmets in a car designed when those were actually being used.
I don't know what it's like today, but i remember 20ish years ago there was a 9 year waiting list for a Morgan.
Those are so cool. I checked one out at Angeles Crest, they are just beautiful.
Ohhhhhhhh man you wait.... The new Plus 6 with the B58 is incredible! And that... That will spin the rear at a drop of a hat... incredible car!
All those things Matt didn't like, are the ones that make it appeal more to me. Forget any of the extras, skip both roofs for the clip down cover with cut out for the driver, you don't need a radio - they weigh too much and don't sound as nice as a nearly open exhaust, cut down the mass as much as possible, and enjoy the raw experience.
Got to be one of the best sounding 4’s around! Lovely thing, crazy expensive here in Oz, but a genuine icon. Just a shame that the crumple zone extends from the front bumper to the rear...
It does sound great - melodious and soulful.
Well done Matt. Enjoyed that. You have to try a 3 Wheeler.
Malvern in the UK is a great place with so much history. The touch screen was invented at the former RSRE Malvern just down the road from Morgan Motors, sadly this place is undergoing demolition as I type this.
What year they invented the t-screen?
"Better than a Supermoto" Wow, high praise. But at 70k... I'm not the market. That'll service my SM for life and beyond.
I do love the view out the cockpit of the bonnet though. Same with the Aero 8's.
"it's objectively terrible" and yet I still want one more than I want air in my lungs.
Car costume comment was quite deep. Thank you for that. Cheers.
Have always loved these. This is a great review. Would love to see Doug DeMuro evaluate it's quirks and features!
Perfect 5th vehicle! I relate. Kinda.
I have 6 vehicles but their combined values probably don’t add up to $90K. It is nice to have choice tho 😊
Top notch review!
It's almost irrelevant but Malvern is pronounced Mol-vun. I was born and grew up not far from there and it is indeed a beautiful place. Great review. Special car for sure. Thanks!
Have always wanted to visit the Morgan factory
I’ve spent weeks looking at 50s sports cars and the appeal is growing. Maybe this is a solution for a useable version
Great one take
very good review...exactly what the car was meant for.
I didn’t get it but now after watching this, I do. I enjoyed the costume analogy.
I live only a few miles from Malvern, so I am a bit biased. Even here they are quite pricey compared to my own Golf GTI and other normal/common cars. If you factor in depreciation, then organs start making much more sense, since the depreciation is very low. They have to be a second vehicle, like a powerful bike or a camper, is a second vehicle. Seen in those terms, it makes decent financial sense, not daft.
Organs? .... d*** autocorrect.
Beautiful car!
Matt,
Fantastic review.
