  • It's been 10 years since MotoMan drove a Morgan Roadster so he spends the July 4th holiday with a brand new from Malvern Link, England 2019 tribute to the 1965 Morgan Plus Four. This one is fitted with A LOT of options as well as the 30 HP bump Club Sport Tune & Exhaust . . . which along with an incredible round of the #OptionsGame, presents an unusually strong personal finance case . . .

You are spot on with your idea for getting a driving license in a Morgan.

I was going to reply but this says it perfectly. I suppose I'm of an age where... I kind of did get my licence in this level of 'technology'. There's a reason too why they used to train pilots in Tiger Moths, long after they were obsolete. If anything the Morgan has gained in appeal, even though the audience has shrunk.

In 1969 spent an hour driving one of these fantastic machines around an RAF airfield in Germany. That one had a Rover V8 engine and 1969 tyres! It was quite a handful. Accelerating hard down the runway required total concentration to stop the rear end from overtaking the front.

I had to laugh listening to the part about everyone should learn to drive in a Morgan. My first car was a 1958 +4 that my parents purchased for $550. I was 15 at the time and it took me a year and a half of weekends to rebuid this amazing car. I learned about cars and how they basically worked from my experience fixing this one up. I remember driving down H-1, going 65mph, and people pulling closer to me, yelling "eh bra, what kine car is dat?". I was the only one that could drive that car, as the clutch had about 1/2" of travel. My parents did enroll me in a driver safety class which was a good thing, but, like you suggest, learning to drive in a Morgan gave me driving skills that have lasted. I've been driving for 50 years, have never caused an accident but avoided many. The experience of bringing that car back to life and the joy of driving it, will forever put a smile on my face...

I got my open-wheeler competition license in a 1958 series 2 4/4, fitted with a Ford 116E motor with Cosworth bits. I really LEARNT to drive Wow. The other day a truck backed into my run around car my first accident since I was 18-now 73! My memories of driving the Mog are precious. I only had one problem with it. It took a while to find out if my girlfriend was in love with me or the car. After 45 years of marriage, I think I won. Thanks for the video from New Zealand.

I did (sort of) learn to drive in a Morgan, so tend to concur. The Morgan in question was a '37 MX4 Super Sports Three Wheeler- hand-throttle, crash-box (you double de-declutch) & hand start. The biggest difference is that you have to think about breaking before everybody else & that they are a little more physical to use. My Dad also had various four wheeled Morgans, of which I have fond memories. They are also fun to drive, if you're after a more visceral driving experience.

I'd love to get your take on the new Morgans - Plus Six and Plus Four. I love that Morgan have gotten over the hump of keeping these going through tougher regulations - some things they had to update or it was game over. The question in my mind is this: with everything gained by the new CX chassis, suspension (which looks to me on paper like having your cake and eating it too), did they lose anything? There's no doubt they gained some things. But, were there any trade offs? I think you'd give a good perspective on this and I'd love to see your take on it.

You are the right Man to preview this car, your humour is brilliant disguising what in reality is mutton dressed as lamb or in American, a pig wearing lipstick! My only ride in a Morgan resulted 20 years ago in 'smiling only' at them but secretly admiring my Malvern neighbours keeping the business ticking along.

One of the best reviews (& I’m a Brit.) of any Plus 4 that I’ve seen. You’re final point about Old School driving is exactly right. And the other side of the coin? Perhaps an eV Roller? Strong forearms for the former and Britannia ruling the waves for the latter. An eV RR being the perfect sailing ship (sorry car) for the future!

The driver training idea sounds good. I didn't know they have to be assembled in the US when bought there.
That makes them a lot more expensive than in my native Germany. It also means that resale values would drop sharply if this crazy legislation were changed in the US and your business case would be blown out of the water.
I love Morgans a lot, I really do. I even went to visif the factory as a student many years ago, before they were smart enough to charge hefty entrance fees.
However, I often see Morgans for sale with low mileages - and almost no miles per previous user.
So I assume many follow their cravings, buy one and then realize how rarely they ever can drive them.
    To really enjoy a Morgan,
weather must be fine and moderate,
the distance should be long enough to justify the fiddling with the top but not long enough to strss you out.
No leg of the trip must involve serious luggage or more than 2 persons
And the trip shouldn't take you to any part of the town where the locals might steal accessories worth a Ford Fiesta just by screwing them off the body.
So I'll probably keep loving Morgans from a distance.

I think that learning to drive in a totally manual vehicle is SPOT ON. Good luck trying to keep most from crashing one of the $$$$$ Morgan 'trainers' when they're learning the clutch with that FAST gdi 4cyl. An old Beetle (36- or 40 hp) is a little better learning place b/c 1st, 2nd and esp Rev, are low gears and the weaker flat 4's MAKE you learn how to gradually engage the clutch to keep from stalling them. The VW would be a lot less lost cash when the 'errors' happen. Let's do it though. Required to learn AND take driving test in a fully manual car.
Possible 2nd benefit: less 'appliance' owners. Might actually have more new drivers think a car can be an adventureous or FUN way to get to work, the store, etc.
I like this idea because, this might be one of the fastest ways to stem the 'Crossover mania' that is already making getting a DRIVING CAR harder and harder.
Mazda, the maker of the Morgans tranny would sell more cars too. Enough babble. I agree. Let's find the car-a-holic legislators we need to make this get to LAW!!

I don't care how much it costs. I'd consider selling a family member to own one. In the late sixties when dinosaurs roamed the highways I attended college with a young woman whose father was a major figure in the CIA in Vietnam having been stationed there off and on since the 1950's. He owned a 1964 Morgan Plus4 that he passed on to his son a year or so before while he was overseas saving us all from the Commie menace. And when my friend's brother went into the Air Force for a few weeks before being mysteriously transferred to the "State Department" Nancy got the car. I drove it on a number of occasions and as I recall it the experience was exactly as demonstrated in the video. Nothing else I've ever driven was quite like it.
How did I know the family history? Well, the young woman in question returned to college one autumn after spending her summer working at the "Company." Later, on a trip to Germany I happened across a book in a bookstore window in East Berlin entitled "Who's who in the CIA." There was her dad. :) I lost track of Nancy after college but my memories of her are sweet, especially when combined with the memories of that Morgan .

We're going to feature some classics . . . But seriously, how many of you want to see a car as old as the Bentley. Need to be very realistic here . . . The investment we make in these episodes is the same, whether it is a new Porsche or an old Bentley and if you look at the views of our last two episodes, the market is telling us not to shoot these types of things. Would love for that not to be the case. If any of you REALLY want to see the Bentley, comment here AND hit us up via socials - Twitter and Instagram (both @MotoManTV). If we see enough real interest on BOTH platforms, then we would consider shooting it. The owner is a good friend and has offered the car. And yes, it's very real.

    NB
Most Auto importers do not now include Manual cars in their model range. They have automatic transmission CVT rubber band driven boxes that are at best hopeless as auto transmissions and typically costly to repair outside of Warranty. I have a VW DSG. It died at 42,000 Kim. A friends died at 17,000 klms. VW’s DSG is totally unreliable. Of the rest, Mercedes is now has the only Auto box you can trust to actually last. That means most households do not have a manual car for young drivers to learn off. You have to want to drive manual and have someone in the family support you to actually learn. Most parents can’t drive manuals themselves. hence, they will not buy a car for their child they can’t drive or understand. When you try to explain the differences, you get a blank response, why should they learn a manual when all the cars are autos. It also means you need to pay a driving school for lessons. If you don’t have the money, then you do not learn to drive a Manual car. So much so that 1 on 4 now get their drivers licence on a manual. The level of driving skill is taking a worrisome turn for the worse in Australia. I agree with your comment. Sadly fewer in my country will actually understand why.
Is it the same in the USA? Is there an appreciation for the stick shift?
