Thank you, Bob! Will check these out on my next trip to Trader Joe's. Far from being an expert oenophile, I somehow always luck up with solid pics. I have purchased the Satis Dei several times, and it is often in my rotation. My "staple" wine is the Puerta de Plata Reserva. It is a bottle that I can enjoy and know that I will not end up with a headache the next day 🤣. Wishing you the best in 2024!
Thanks. Bob - love these bargain wine vidoes! So daunting when with all the wines at the various stores so you are doing us all a massive favor! So informative
Great tips, Bob, many thanks! I just found your videos and was able to snag a bottle of the '21 Caretaker Pinot from your review several months ago - what a solid buy. Cheers!
These types of videos are helpful both for wine geeks and casual drinkers alike, as it disproves the tired notion that one has to spend $$$ to find decent or good wines. Cremant often offers incredible value for money, especially at the Reserve Level and a good Chablis for under 20 US$ anywhere in the world is a steal. Being back in Europe now, Aldi and Lidl have a pretty decent selection of wines and trading up we have Tesco and Auchan for a wider selection, albeit slightly higher prices. Cheers, Bob!
Hi Solomon, thank you for the comment. There is plenty of good value if one knows where to look. Im currently in Amsterdam, wine shopping here is quite good. Nice independent stores, grocery store wine is so-so. Cheers. 🍷
Ty. It’s been a while since I’ve been to Trader Joe’s. I tend to forget about them but remember their values well. Specifically a ~$20 chateauneuf I had that easily drank like a $50.
I live in Amador County in the Sierra foothills. Vineyards here, as well as in Lodi, sell a ton of grapes to Napa makers who pass it off for their own. We grow great fruit here and the local vintners make some tremendous wines.
I get to Amador County on a regular basis. Like many regions, the wines have a distinctive style. It’s all about your personal preference. Thanks for commenting. 🍷
I buy most of my wine at Costco, where the selection and values are fantastic. This lets me try expressions that otherwise would be above my usual range. I go to Trader Joe's to fill in the gaps with interesting but less-popular varietals that Costco doesn't carry. My experience with Trader Joe's is more hit or miss, though.
@@bobpaulinskimasterofwineI am a retired Long Islander, living in Jacksonville, Florida. We have an OCEAN of wine here. It is sold almost everywhere that beer is sold, and gallons of it are marked on sale. Even gas stations have wine racks. Most of it, of course, is from the big commercial labels I have no idea who is buying and drinking all of this stuff. My wife and I are far out on the wine-drinking bell curve. When we host dinners and parties, though, wine is not a big mover…
Hi Bob can I suggest when you make these videos if you can also describe the body and tannin (full, medium, low) so that people studying WSET could benefit from that information? Just a suggestion 😊 thanks for the video!
Another great video.. Nice group of wines. Out of curiosity, when you are looking at color, can you tell when a producer is using 'mega purple' ( or any other color enhancer ),or is it difficult to tell visually? I also just read that some producers add extra powered tannin to their wine.?. How prevalent is this?
Thanks, I glad to like it. Sometimes, but not always mega purple can be recognized. If a heavy hand is used, it can be noticeable at the rim of the glass. Powdered tannin is occasionally used but no one will admit it. Mostly linked to cheap wines.
Thank you, Bob, for this helpful video! Agree with the other comment about it's cute that you throw the corks!! Ok, question, what Chard is closest to Rombauer ???
@@jmcerruti6421It’s a unique style well oaked, creamy with a bit of residual sugar. TJ’s carries an option called Butter. It’s a less pricey version, but the style is similar.
Bob, thanks for your reviews. Looks like you may be shopping at the Concord , CA Trader Joes. I tried a T.J. labeled Pinot Noir from Carneros. I was surprised at the $13 price, it seemed very pleasant, although it didn't have a strong P.N. minerality flavor.. Any thoughts?
Hi David, you’re right, I was at the Concord, CA store. I’ve tried the Carneros PN. It’s a solid value, but not one of the better TJs examples in my opinion. It’s a simple, fresh, bright style, lacks nuance.
I tried one bottle Satis Dei and thought wow for $10 not bad at all so I went back and grabbed 6 more bottles, still like it each time I drank it. I still have one bottle now, but somehow I went back and tried to get a few more bottles but then only saw 2020 on shelf so I've not tried the 2020 yet.
Thank you Bob, I really enjoy your video's a lot. Your presentation is top notch, subtle humor (throwing corks behind you after opening a bottle) is fun, and they are really entertaining and informative. The information you give is easy to understand and really valuable to us wine value seekers. The Costco and TJ values are my must go to always since I think a lot of us do our wine purchasing there, but all of your content is really good stuff. I used to love wineking, really miss Peter and Dr. Pat, but you are filling that gap now, so just wanted to say thank you and happy holidays, keep up the great work.
I appreciate the kind words. I’m glad you enjoy my videos and find them useful. In recent months, I’ve worked to improve the video, audio and editing. As for Pat and Peter, they’ve both been long time friends. Jay, aka WineKing, I’ve never met. I’ll keep turning out videos, much more that I plan to do in that space. Best wishes for a wonderful holiday and thanks again for the support. Cheers. 🍷
Phew, the Spanish one's gonna be tough to find, I don't think I've ever seen it. Sounds like a Grenache-Syrah version of an elegant Ribera del Duero. The others I can forget about finding! Cheers Bob, have a nice time in the holidays! I'll be visiting Rias Baixas in a few days, hopefully get my hands on some of those forgotten red grapes in the area!
Great judgement! Now, we in Canada, have to pay numericly $10 canadien more , for same quality. On the other side, I had today a bottle of Žilavka in Bosnia & Herzegovina for $4 US, that compares to $30+ gruener veltiner. That was pure luck. True hunters, still find great value. But the shops do a great job finding real quality value wines too. Have a very nice 2020 Austrian gruner veltliner eiswein in the glass right now….i paid $28 for it. Hi Carl, shopped for wine in NY many times, you can most anything if you know where to look. The GV price at $28 seems cheap! You too, best wishes for a wonderful holiday!
I did the opposite of hunting for value and splurged on a gourmet restaurant with wine pairing yesterday. Two wines stood out as especially good and interesting. One petnat from Catalonia, Clot de les Soleres and one Hungarian dry Furmint by Gilvesy. The Furmint was deceptively close to a Riesling, which is a win, of course.
Interesting. I’m generally not a Pet Nat fan, but I’m open to trying others. Dry Furmint can be amazing. To me, many have a green tea character with outstanding acidity.
Bought a few bottles of TJ Cabernet Franc a couple years ago that was hell delish. Tried to buy a case but they were out. Last vintage wasn't nearly as good. Hopefully remarkable 2023 will shine on those CFs once more!
I don’t recall seeing a TJ CF, but I’ll be on the lockout. In recent years, I’ve been drinking more CF from a variety of places. I like CF from Mendoza. Cheers.
Hard enough to find that quality in Ireland in supermarkets. I was in Nashville for a month last year and it was difficult to find any quality under $30. Maybe they have different taxes there?
