Nice wine reviews. I have had the Kirkland Brunello. Here in San Antonio in the last 6-8 months I've noticed a significant reduction in good wine offerings at Costco. Especially in Italians and major Bordeaux estates. Removed one of the long wood racks and doubled the amount of pallet stacked wine. Never seen any Dr Loosen but for several years they had Karl Erbes Ürziger Würzgarten kabinett riesling for $11. Fantastic value and I bought a few cases each year.
Thanks for the good word. I’m surprised the range has been reduced in San Antonio. There are regional buyers and variability by market. Karl Erbes is solid!

Excellent review. I noticed you pronounce very well the foreign wine names unlike the California names in Castilian , example : Paso Robles is pronounce Roe - bless not rubles.
The local pronunciation of "Paso Robles" is mostly PASS-owe, full stop, and has been since at least the beginning of the 20th century. It wouldn't surprise anyone from the Central Coast area, whether Latino or Anglo, that Bob almost never heard "Robles" during his winery visits. (For the record, Bob, the whole string sounds like pass-uh-ROW-blaze - or in the mouth of an Anglo with a little more Spanish and little concern about being thought pretentious, pa-so-ROH-bless.) California schools make note that Castilian is the majority dialect of Spanish spoken in far-off Spain. The Spanish taught in West Coast US schools is, pragmatically, español mexicano - that is, Mexican Spanish.
I know it is a divisive topic but have you ever considered providing a rating on the 100 point scale for the wines that you taste? While certainly quite subjective, it would help me to get a sense of exactly where the wines stack up in your opinion. As always, thanks for the content.
Hi Rob, I’ve thought about this for a long while. I’m conflicted. If I make the change, there is likely no going back. I appreciate that you value my opinion. Perhaps I should take a poll on the topic. 🍷
Thanks for the note. Much appreciated. I’m writing an article for the Somm Journal that will discuss the eco initiatives in Paso. It’s a cutting edge place! I love it too. 🍷
I live in Southern CA and can't remember if I've seen any of these other than the Brunello, which I now will try, thank you. Do you guys have the 2020 pillars of hercules red blend local? It's a fantastic bargain.
The mix will vary be store, but friends in other markets have found some of the others, aside from the Brunello. I’ve not seen Pillars of Hercules in NorCal. Cheers!
Thanks for the video! I rarely get to a Cosco; they don't sell wine in Maryland. I've had a few Austin Hope CSs and found them sweet and maybe spoofilated (like Caymus).
Thanks for taking the tine to comment. As I mentioned in the video, I don't drink much of the big gun Cabs, but for some it's just what they want. Cheers!
Newbie here to wine education, so a few questions: 1 Is the white wine a Kabinett or a Riesling? I've heard of Riesling but not Kabinett? What is the correct term to use? 2. Was the white wine cold when you reviewed it? 3. Is a port a meal wine or a dessert wine or both? I never knew what fortified referred to. Thank you
Thanks for taking time to ask. 1) Riesling is the grape variety. Kabinett is a term that indicates when the fruit was harvested. There are other terms for later harvested fruit as well. 2) Yes, it was chilled in a fridge for about one hour. Too cold reduces the amount of aroma and taste. 3) Port is typically served after a meal. Fortified means neutral grain spirit is added before the yeast converts all of the grape sugar to alcohol. The spike from the neutral grain spirit stops the fermentation while there is still some residual sugar in the wine. The resulting wine has sweetness and the elevated alcohol makes the wine stable.
I like the Dr Loosen riesling. I’m not knowledgable but I do like lighter body wines and Costco by me always keep them in stock. This week, I saw that there were two Dr Loosens, I wasn’t sure if one was dry and the other sweeter?
That Dr Loosen wine is amazing for that price. It's pretty good for any price. And that tawny is good for the price too. But it's not as smooth as it could be.
I was able to get my hands on the brunello recently but I was a bit disappointed... maybe my expectation was too high? It had the classic nose/pallet just as you described, but I thought that the finish was too short and lacked the intensity from a relatively young (still) sangeovese. I also tried a kirkland chianti gran selezione for the first time (which sold for $23 I think?) and thought that it was much better value. Anyhow, love your stuff and thanks for all the knowledge sharing!!
Thanks for commenting. Sometimes it comes to style preferences. It’s a $20 Brunello, a fraction of the typical broad market price. For me, it’s a solid wine for $20. In terms of what Brunello can be, it’s not one of the best. I’m glad the Chianti was more to your liking. I don’t recall seeing it on my latest Costco visit. I appreciate the good word. Best wishes for the New Year.
Nice video. I usually only buy French or California wines. I hate the glut of New Zealand wines. Kirkland does seem to be a very good brand . We like the French vodka for making limoncello.
Bob are the wines you taste privy to all Costco’s throughout the country? I live in Southest Florida..will I see your choices there as well? Thank you in advance
Hi Christine, Costco has eight regional buyers, therefore the mix of wines will vary by market. I try to focus on wines that get broad distribution. The Kirkland labels will be nationally available, although they will be seasonal.
Do you throw the tea cork over your shoulder for good luck? 😏 So glad to find your channel because I don't have time to take a class! Thank you for sharing your expertise!
I'm glad you found me as well. It didn't bring luck, my latest lottery ticket was not a winner! Haha! Please continue to comment, I look forward to hearing from you again. Cheers!
Couple notes about your video… can we see the bottle as you open it? Or maybe a small insert a thumbnail pic on-screen of the wine you are reviewing so at least we have a visual of the bottle when we go to Costco looking for it. Thanks for your good work!
Bob, I’d happily send you out shopping for me. The Ribero? I’ve had so many bad ones in the last year, i just go to Rioja all the time now. To me it’s plonk with tannins. Now Vega Scililia is a different story. I’m unhappy to say that the Ribero wines seem to have gone the same way as most Australian wines in that they have priced all the top wines in the €100 range and unfortunately the entry and middle range is bereft of any quality.
Rick, let’s go wine shopping! I’m surprised that you’ve had many poor experiences with it. Whenever I’m in Spain, it seems like most everyone is drinking RdD. You’re right about the top end, the prices have stepped up in recent years.
2024 I’m dropping liquor and only drinking wine. Good video, nice energy. Very professional , hopefully other videos are more entertaining and less monotonous . Show some more character , overall for what I searched and your title you delivered.
Hi Bob, I really enjoyed the video. Unfortunately our Costco here in Austin TX doesn’t seem to have these wines. We love the Kirkland Prosecco and find it to be an absolute steal at $8! Do you have any suggestions as to how to spot hidden gems at a Costco outside of CA?
Hi Christine, I’m surprised that you can’t find any. At the very least, the two Kirkland labels see national distribution, although some are limited in terms of volumes. As for suggestions on finding hidden gems, look for the supplier funded promos, these are usually great values. Also, look for wine signs with an asterisk in the upper right corner. These are often lower volume, artisanal wines that will not be around long. I’m glad you liked the video. Cheers!
One time I visited a Costco in LA ( Cerritos). I was shocked that it was all CA wine. I had hoped to see a good spread of all parts of the world, as CA is a serious wine consuming state. These videos in Costcos un CA also confirm that. Clearly, Californians love their CA wine. Reds are "bold," "tasty," "jammy." In Spain, Italy, and France, wines are still made for food.
@@robrussell5329 Regional buyers factor into the equation as well. The better buyers strike a balance from different wine regions, others less so. In NorCal, I generally see a broad mix.
There’s a couple of reasons. First, I taste and write about wines for the Somm Journal and Tasting Panel magazines. I’m rarely sent German wines. Second, many people that I share wines with casually, don’t drink much Riesling. I think that’s a huge miss. I do drink a good amount of Aussie Riesling, love the lemon /lime bone dry style.
I just picked up the Kirkland Russian River 2022 Pinot Noir. Screw cap. I was wondering if you have ever found TCA in a bottle with a screw cap? I am getting a very faint wiff of it for the first time in this wine, maybe I'm picking up on something else. It's only $11.99, but I wish it were just slightly better as it seems a bit sour on the finish. At $12 it's still miles ahead of most in this price range so I'm probably just being greedy, I struggle to find a Pinot under $18-20 that I get pleasure out of.
It’s possible, but rare. TCA can be introduced prior to bottling. My guess is your wine is reductive. Did it develop favorably with aeration? A slight sour note can be from volatile acidity. That would be unlikely, but possible.
The corked note came after being open for a while. I'm now thinking it was probably the glass and the cabinet it was stored in, as I didn't notice it after my first taste 2 days ago. The sour note did diminish after being open. Still not crazy about it. Thanks for responding. They had an interesting Sancerre, maybe I'll grab it next time.
Though there is a huge price gap between South Korea and the US, it is really helpful to watch this video clip to find best wine in Cost co!! Thanks a lot! I will buy Dr. Loosen soon
Sometimes it is wineries selling off excess. Others are making custom wines. Others might be using young vines, not quite up to standard for an estate wine. Every situation is different. With the Kirkland labels, the quality varies, but generally it’s solid. The prices are often low due the volumes and fewer links at the distribution chain.
Hi Cheryl, a best bet is a Chablis. A very good one can be found for usually under $25. If you want to splurge, look for a Premier or Grand Cru. Most will have minimal oak, crisp, fresh, good purity of fruit and completely dry.
and your white paper to show color- more effective if you had shot of you tilting the glass - with the wine at an angle so you can show more of it to get the best idea of the color.
Nice review. I would disagree on the wood being well integrated in the Austin Hope. I find it to be a very prominent and distinct note on the taste. So much so that it is hard for me to get past it to the other characteristics. That said, the last time I tried Austin Hope was a few years back so possibly things have changed. I do think it is a high quality wine but I wish they would dial back the oak. On the other hand, I will be seeking out the Brunello as that is an unheard of price point
Thanks. Austin Hope is not a style that I drink often, but I do think it’s well made. Not for everyone. I hope you call still find the Brunello. I appreciate the comments. Cheers. 🍷
@@bobpaulinskimasterofwine yes, agree that the wine itself is well made, it’s really the oak forward style that I am not a fan of. This is what makes your input as a master of wine so valuable, being able to comment on quality regardless of style. I’m never going to complain about spending money on a wine just because I don’t like the style, so long as the underlying quality justifies the price. I ultimately may not like the wine itself but that is part of the journey that we are on. Keep up the reviews and recommendations as it points me in the right direction when it comes to what bottles to try next.
Years ago I tried a Kirkland Brunello and it was closer to a Rosso de Montalcino at a low price. I will try this one but a small regional that normally sells for $50 to $400 is difficult to believe at that price point.
I understand where you’re coming from. As I said in the video, it’s a solid wine from a good producer, but also from a more classically proportioned vintage. I did a bit more research on the availability, a few sources put it at around 120,000 bottles. Cheers. 🍷
Friendly suggestion You could have the name of each wine on the time line with the white ball on it. This way we can find your suggestion again my the name of the wine. I hsve no idea how to make the video to include this feature, im fact im stll trying to get on utube using my samsung 23S ultra phone, im lost! 😊
Suggestion: When you say you're going to go back to a wine later to see how it develops, perhaps add the return taste to the end of the video, at least if there's a noteworthy difference...
Tell us the Ph of wines in the future, im looking for sweet, low Ph wines. I thing the Ph should be printed on the label as well as the sweetness level, world wide.
Great video, Costco not allowed to sell alcohol here. Love Italian red wine, Sangiovese, Nebbiolo.I moved away from California wines due to the trend of massive amounts of oak in the wines.I believe they have started to move away from doing this hopefully. The Austin Hope Cabernet Sauvignon is $80 here a big wine for sure.
$15 for a Riesling Kabinett from a top producer is absurd value for money when you factor in import costs. Although here in Germany you can even buy his (and other producer's) Große Lage Kabinetts for ~15€. I just bought a Loosen Ürziger Würzgarten and a Molitor Zeltinger Hinmelreich for under 30€ combined. We are so spoiled. I dread the day they explode in popularity.

$50 for a jammy wine? How Californian... But not for me. I just paid $48 at Costco for Chateau Dauzac, Margaux. Won't even open one for six more years :)
It hadn’t occurred to me, but there is a similarity. A few years ago when I routinely traveled to China, I recall seeing Benfolds. The label was identical to Penfolds, except for one letter.
This is subjective, but for me, I’m a fan of Vinous. Suckling tends to give higher scores than most. With any reviewer, the score is just one piece, the commentary is needed as well. Unfortunately, in a retail setting, it’s often all about the score only. I hope this helps.
Sorry but if a person is a fan of Brunello or if he wants to discover this type of wine I would advise him to stay away from that bottle. I don't think Barbi is still involved in this project but I have tasted it and this is just a decent Sangiovese and has none of the characteristics of Brunello, thin, light and without character, yet I read that the grapes should come from the southern part of Montalcino??😵 At that price I would add a few bucks and opt for a good Rosso di Montalcino. I don't think anyone can expect to drink a good Brunello and pay 20 dollars a bottle for it.
Thank you for commenting. I didn’t say it was a great Brunello, but it is a good entry point for the wine type. Yes, a Rosso di Montalcino from a top source would be a good alternative. Cheers! 🍷

Much appreciated! I didn’t buy the Ice Wine on this trip, but I’ve had it previously. Vidal is interesting being a hybrid grape variety. I recall it being very good. Merry Christmas! 🍷
Excellent review. I noticed you pronounce very well the foreign wine names unlike the California names in Castilian , example : Paso Robles is pronounce Roe - bless not rubles.
Thank you for commenting. Much appreciated. 🍷
(For the record, Bob, the whole string sounds like pass-uh-ROW-blaze - or in the mouth of an Anglo with a little more Spanish and little concern about being thought pretentious, pa-so-ROH-bless.)
California schools make note that Castilian is the majority dialect of Spanish spoken in far-off Spain. The Spanish taught in West Coast US schools is, pragmatically, español mexicano - that is, Mexican Spanish.
@@ArchaicAnglist Thank you for the comment.
Thanks for this video. Love Paso Robles❤
Cheers!
Picked up 2 of the Tawny Ports while visiting Georgia this week. Wish our Texas Costcos sold Port.
Texas has some unusual laws pertaining to selling wines above certain alcohol levels. Two nights ago, I had some of the Tawny. Very good. Cheers. 🍷
Newbie here to wine education, so a few questions:
1 Is the white wine a Kabinett or a Riesling?
I hope that answers your questions.
Thanks for the advice - a suggestion can you focus can on label a bit longer !!!
Yes, you’re right about the label. Will do! Thanks. 🍷
I like the Dr Loosen riesling. I’m not knowledgable but I do like lighter body wines and Costco by me always keep them in stock. This week, I saw that there were two Dr Loosens, I wasn’t sure if one was dry and the other sweeter?
I only saw one wine from Dr Loosen. Do you happen to recall what the other option is?
That Dr Loosen wine is amazing for that price. It's pretty good for any price. And that tawny is good for the price too. But it's not as smooth as it could be.
Thanks for commenting. It’s good they keep a wide a variety and change things up often. Cheers.
I like uppercut from Costco at 7.99 , plus there k Malbec is excellent 6.99. Thanks for the tips.
In a previous video, I mentioned the Malbec. I agree, it’s a solid value. 🍷
Nice video. I usually only buy French or California wines. I hate the glut of New Zealand wines. Kirkland does seem to be a very good brand . We like the French vodka for making limoncello.
Thank you. Costco changes up the assortment often enough, always plenty of new wines. They do a great job with CA and France. Limoncello! 👍
Great content. Do you got some tips about total wine bargains ?
Thank you. I have a video coming on Trader Joe’s. TW will happen early 2024. Cheers. 🍷
I had the 2009 of the Ribera Del Duero and it was fantastic.
Good to know. The one I tasted was rock solid, I went back for more.

I liked the description of the label of the second wine: window dressing term 😂
I thought about calling it, bling-bling.

Couple notes about your video… can we see the bottle as you open it? Or maybe a small insert a thumbnail pic on-screen of the wine you are reviewing so at least we have a visual of the bottle when we go to Costco looking for it. Thanks for your good work!
Thanks for commenting. I’ll make note to show the bottle clearly. Much appreciated!

Thank you for the good word.
I saw the $20 Brunello about 3 weeks ago and enjoyed it very much for that price! Went back this weekend to buy a case and it was gone. :(
I’m glad you enjoyed it. Wines like that tend to disappear quickly. 🍷
Cheers!
Thanks so much for the info!@@bobpaulinskimasterofwine
Hello - on the Riesling- you mentioned liking Kabinett Riesling a lot but don’t drink them much anymore .. wondering why that is ?
@@briand2614 Yes, the glass can be the cause! Hopefully, mystery solved.
Though there is a huge price gap between South Korea and the US, it is really helpful to watch this video clip to find best wine in Cost co!! Thanks a lot! I will buy Dr. Loosen soon
Thank you for the comment, another Costco video is coming soon.
@@bobpaulinskimasterofwine I am looking forward to watching the new one!
Im gonna buy Kirkland Brunello di Montalcino soon! In Korea, we call it BDM. Is it right??
How many different Kirkland wines are there?
Counting the year round and seasonal wines combined, it must be around 100.
I used to think that the wines sold in the market were leftovers from the wineries, and that only the good wines were available at the wineries.
Could you recommend a dry Chardonnay? French thanks
You're right! I typically show the wine color more clearly. Note to self, show the wine color more clearly, every time! Cheers!
the Salice Salentino segment you did - that really showed it well. Love those wines !
Hi Bob great video. Do you have any thoughts on the Kirkland champagne for 20 dollars?
Thanks. I've had the Kirkland Champagne many times over the years. I don't feel the current offering is as good as it was previously.
I'm glad this was asked and answered. I'll probably go with Aldi's instead. Thanks.

Hi Bob, was the Cahors a Special Discount Pallet, or in the regular section? Seems like a crazy price.
Hi. Pallet stack.
@@doublewides Thank you for the kind words. Tasting broadly is a good plan. Best way to discover new wines. 🍷
@@doublewides Well put, it is all about the journey. And with wine, there’s always something new to extend the journey further.
Cheers. 🍷
Thank I’m on my way!👍🏼🎄

You could have the name of each wine on the time line with the white ball on it.

You’re right. I’ll add it as needed. Thanks.
Who's picking up all those corks, lol. I've had the Tawny from Costco and love it.

Tell us the Ph of wines in the future, im looking for sweet, low Ph wines. I thing the Ph should be printed on the label as well as the sweetness level, world wide.
The vast majority of wine is between a pH of 3.0 to 3.9.
does anyone happen to know the costco's product code for the Cahors? I wanted to call them up to see if they have some in stock somewhere
Just checked my notes. No longer have code number on file. It’s been a couple of months since that video was released. I hope you can still find it.
I’m glad you enjoyed the video. The Brunello in the video was very good. Too bad your Costco cannot sell wine. Austin Hope is not for the shy! Cheers!
Nice
Thanks!
It is a good value, no doubt about it. Thankfully, there are plenty of good wines to go around. Cheers!

Question: Which wine reviewers commonly appearing on labels do you believe are best? Eg, it's my impression that james suckling is probably the worst.
Cheers! 🍷
