Dwight Frye played Renfield in Dracula with Bela Lugosi and Igor in Frankenstein with Boris Karloff. He scared the heck out of me as a ten year old and still gives me the creeps today. It was destined for Alice to do this song and it's perfect. Alice put on some of the best concerts ever. They were and still are amazing. ADDED: 2024 Came back on this today two years after and you have to check out a live video of this song. It gets very crazy. Lots of mayhem on stage.
I will comment. I saw him in the 70’s. Great show. My bro LOVED him. The day of the concert in Cleveland, he took too many drugs (stupid) and he missed the whole damn concert. A friend and I carried him to the rapid transit. Once he was playing this song, and he was wearing a torn tshirt hanging out his window. His bedroom was plastered with Alice pics. Awwwww. Sadly, Steve died 4 years ago, but I still listen to this and think of happy times. Sang it in karaoke this past summer. ❤️

Welcome to my Nightmare is a great concept album - title track, Cold Ethel, Black Widow are classics. Alice’s whole catalogue is pretty awesome. Hi, the man choking in the street at the end of the song was indeed choking at the hands of our Dwight Fry, absolutely amazing song and you guys diagnosed it so well, look for a live performance of this song in 1979 when Alice was at an all time low as a result of alcohol and drug abuse and to me he was Dwight Fry during this performance 💥

In the documentary, they said when they recorded the part of him shouting he has to get out of here, they covered him with a ton of chairs. He was literally trapped on the floor.
Love it to Death was the very first album I bought with my own money. I was 12 years old. It literally changed my life. I'm 62 now and still a huge fan. BTW a few notes about this song. Legend has it that when they were recording the Gotta Get outta here parts the producer Bob Ezrin had Alice lying on the floor burried under a pile of metal folding chairs in order to give him that feeling of confinement. Also the explosion sound toward the end of the song was made by dropping an alka seltzer into a miked glass or water and then slowing it down to put on the track.

Thanks for reviewing this song. When I was 11 in 1971, my oldest brother brought this album home. Looking at the album cover, gatefold eyes, back cover, my initial thought was, Ok this is weird and freaky. There was nothing like this around at that time. My brother passed away 2 years ago and I now own his album 50 years later. It is now the most important album in my collection. The whole album is excellent!!! Alice still performs this song live to this day with theatrics so if he comes to your area, go and see him live while you can!!!

I got to see Alice Cooper in 1978 on July 4TH. He opened with this song. The stage went totally dark, and a movie began playing with a child's voice, then Alice in the straight jacket being wheeled into what looked like a mental hospital. He escapes from the orderlies and begins running down a hall toward the audience, all onscreen, getting smaller and getting out of the straight jacket as he jumps through the screen, which dropped, and the band was there, with explosions and blacklit spider webs on each side o the main stage. People in black and glowing red spider costumes were crawling up and down the webs for the entire show. But that was the start of his two and a half our show. On of the best shows I've seen.

6 years after he recorded this song Alice would spend time in a Sanitarium for real to Detox from Alcoholism. He had been drinking two cases of beer and a bottle of whiskey a day as well as to function and in order to get up and function he would drink vodka, which in turn would make him vomit blood. At that time there were no drug detox center's so the only place he could go was a mental institution. When he sobered up he wrote the Album "From The Inside" in 1978.
Yes, horrifying experience I’m sure. It’s really interesting how certain aspects of his life ended up paralleling this track. After being dry for a short time he tumbled back into alcoholism in the early 80s and added cocaine. His wife threatened divorce and to take their toddler daughter with her. He was emaciated and almost died of cirrhosis. But he got completely clean, for good this time, and made an amazing physical recovery! Even more amazing is how his personal life and marriage recovered. I imagine those experiences affected the way he views this song when performing it live though.

Was fortunate enough to see Alice and his band in 1971 in a very small and intimate venue, the Brown Theater in my hometown Louisville, KY. The band was just taking off then, first hit album just released (the one you've pictured here), and this song was the grand finale. Finally met him and his wife when he was in Louisville in 2019.
I saw them at the Hollywood bowl in mid 70's and they had this helicopter flying over with "paper underwear" falling on the whole audience. Don't ask me why, but it was funny as heck! Alice also did the "guillotine" deal on stage, where his head came off!

He had this absolutely amazing top-of-the-line Kenwood stereo system. So we spent many hours, hanging out in his room and listening to Alice Cooper. That said, I don’t recall this song at all and can’t see it as one I would have gotten into. Your sensitivity to the subject matter is commendable and heart warming. And your analysis of the lyrics is truly remarkable!!! To me, this song just sounds too weird and that alone would have turned me away from closely listening to the lyrics. Ballet of Dwight Fry is a classic. The images you get listening to the song are off the charts. You can actually feel your mind wondering throughout the song.
The 'killer' album is one of the greatest bass guitar albums you will ever hear. As a matter of fact its in my top ten albums of all time. 'Welcome to my nightmare' is up there also.
You ought to see Alice perform this live, in a straight jacket. It's wild! The constant shifts in this song, the off-key nature of it, the odd rhythms, all express the insanity of it all. Alice is great at imagery, both on the album and on stage. "I...I gotta get OUT OF HERE!"... "Leave me alone, I didn't want to be. Don't touch me!"... This entire song is insanity put down in musical form.
My older brother brought this album home when I was in eighth grade. I found the album cover strange and fascinating, and the music was like nothing I'd ever heard. I was an immediate fan. There was actually a hit am radio song from this album, called I'm Eighteen.
Now that I think of it, you should probably do this whole album over the next few days. Lots of good dark music, but also some lighter stuff, for instance, the song that was beginning when you cut it off. It's called Sun Arise. It's a good followup to Dwight Fry.

I've seen Alice Cooper Live thirteen times. The last time was two weeks ago in fact. Have scar on the back of my hand where his wife stepped on it for being on the stage! lol
The part where he repeatedly yells "I gotta get out of here ", they actually placed Alice under a stack of folding chairs in the studio to help create a feeling of claustrophobia for the recording.
This is my favorite AC album. It's the darkest of the albums that weren't big stage shows, like Welcome To My Nightmare. The truly dark stuff like this, that go well with early Sabbath, is what I love. So of course I'm gonna nominate something from Billion Dollar Babies. Try "Generation Landslide". It's just very different and cool. Twisted and vibey. And fun lyrics.

Considering Renfield is in an Asylum and put in straight jackets, yes, the song fits. I love the double recorded guitars at the beginning giving them a chime type sound. Also, i love the building groove with the bass as the song keeps leading up to the chorus. Great song!

The band which launched producer Bob Ezrin’s career. Kiss, Pink Floyd, Peter Gabriel and others would get the Ezrin touch….Alice Cooper was pretty much Ezrin’s creative vision. And is to this day. Actually, maybe you should look at a deep-dive on artists who’ve been elevated by the Ezrin touch.

I agree, I’m a major AC fan, since early 70’s. Most rock groups get on stage play their music, but Alice Cooper puts on a theater production!!

Actually BERNIE TAUPIN who wrote all of Elton John's lyrics wrote most of the From the Inside Album.

That said, I don’t recall this song at all and can’t see it as one I would have gotten into. Your sensitivity to the subject matter is commendable and heart warming. And your analysis of the lyrics is truly remarkable!!! To me, this song just sounds too weird and that alone would have turned me away from closely listening to the lyrics.

Ballet of Dwight Fry is a classic. The images you get listening to the song are off the charts. You can actually feel your mind wondering throughout the song.
The 'killer' album is one of the greatest bass guitar albums you will ever hear. As a matter of fact its in my top ten albums of all time. 'Welcome to my nightmare' is up there also.

The constant shifts in this song, the off-key nature of it, the odd rhythms, all express the insanity of it all. Alice is great at imagery, both on the album and on stage. "I...I gotta get OUT OF HERE!"... "Leave me alone, I didn't want to be. Don't touch me!"... This entire song is insanity put down in musical form.

My older brother brought this album home when I was in eighth grade. I found the album cover strange and fascinating, and the music was like nothing I'd ever heard. I was an immediate fan. There was actually a hit am radio song from this album, called I'm Eighteen.
Now that I think of it, you should probably do this whole album over the next few days. Lots of good dark music, but also some lighter stuff, for instance, the song that was beginning when you cut it off. It's called Sun Arise. It's a good followup to Dwight Fry.
Coop is the man. His songs are right up there with some of the greatest music to ever be written and performed. This song rocks hard and He's Back (The Man Behind the Mask) from Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives is another classic Alice Cooper song.

I've seen Alice Cooper Live thirteen times. The last time was two weeks ago in fact. Have scar on the back of my hand where his wife stepped on it for being on the stage! lol
The part where he repeatedly yells "I gotta get out of here ", they actually placed Alice under a stack of folding chairs in the studio to help create a feeling of claustrophobia for the recording.
This is my favorite AC album. It's the darkest of the albums that weren't big stage shows, like Welcome To My Nightmare. The truly dark stuff like this, that go well with early Sabbath, is what I love.
So of course I'm gonna nominate something from Billion Dollar Babies. Try "Generation Landslide". It's just very different and cool. Twisted and vibey. And fun lyrics.
Story has it...in the studio while recording this song they restrained him and placed him under chairs I believe to get the emotional scream response which is quite genuine.My sister brought this album home in the early 70's and this was the first Cooper song I ever heard and was hooked it is now 2021 and I am still just as big of a fan.

Considering Renfield is in an Asylum and put in straight jackets, yes, the song fits. I love the double recorded guitars at the beginning giving them a chime type sound. Also, i love the building groove with the bass as the song keeps leading up to the chorus. Great song!

The band which launched producer Bob Ezrin’s career. Kiss, Pink Floyd, Peter Gabriel and others would get the Ezrin touch….Alice Cooper was pretty much Ezrin’s creative vision. And is to this day. Actually, maybe you should look at a deep-dive on artists who’ve been elevated by the Ezrin touch.
