- This is The 1/1/1971 Nebraska vs LSU game. Nebraska was tied in week 2 at USC. 1970 was another one of those seasons with multiple unbeaten teams late in the season so a Cornhusker Climb to #1 was considered unlikely but it wasn't becasue they weren't good enough. LSU was led by Bert Jones and for all purposes this was a home game for The Tigers. In a defensive battle Nebraska had what it took and through a sequence of games during the afternoon it elevated The Cornhuskers to their first of two consecutive national championships. They needed Top Ranked Texas and Second Ranked Ohio State to lose and to their delight, both of those teams suffered double digit losses. I claim no rights.
🔥 - The commercials & pregame content r amazing. Thank u.
They did a prayer before the game and showed it! Wow!
I read once that this was last time cigarette ads were on tv
Cigarette TV ads originally were to cease effective January 1, 1971. However, the ban took effect January 2, 1971 because the networks wanted to be able to sell New Year’s Day bowl commercial time to cigarette companies. The last cigarette ad to air, at least on national TV, occurred later that evening during The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson.
Orange Bowl Stadium: had astroturf, 1970-1976.
Commentators:
Jim Simpson & Al DeRogratis.
2:06:15 Officials miss the Nebraska fumble on their winning drive. No National championship for Nebraska If instant replay existed in 1970.
Upside-down orange at midfield
Too bad Ohio State could only manage 3 points against Stanford in Rose 🌹 Bowl. National Championship denied
The Buckeye's failure offensively in the 1971 and 1976 Rose Bowls baffles me to this day....
Waste of Bert Jones's passing ability (while at LSU). Plus, the 1970 LSU uni's/helmets were not cool looking either. 😂
Hey a game we won!
