- My thanks to romelovesdan for providing me the DVD files used for this project. I've enhanced the broadcast recording of Super Bowl XIII. This copy of the game was in VERY bad shape - lots of noise & compression, very dark picture, and incorrect color that was REALLY washed-out. There was enough there to work with however to accomplish a huge upgrade. I ran the game through Topaz to upscale, denoise, sharpen and double the framerate, then used Da Vinci Resolve to majorly brighten the picture and completely overhaul the color. The end result is far from perfect (very soft focus and not very sharp), but it easily bests any copy of the game you'll find on UA-cam and from the NFL proper. You can see the incredible restoration here - original shots and post-enhancement -- imgbox.com/g/32lbABIWoV

WHAT AN ABSOLUTELY TREMENDOUS UPLOAD. THANK YOU VERY VERY MUCH.
Thank you for this!
Super thankfull for your efforts

One of my favorite channels! Thanks!
I'd just like to take a moment to shame the NFL for making all of this necessary. How could they have let the televised versions of these monumental games almost be lost to history? Dave, you are truly doing the Lord's work.
I think the NFL does not want us to see how good football used to be. Football in the 70 s and 80 s was the best of the sport. They could hit. QBs called their own games. Notice the penalties. Is it that there are more today? No. They let them play back then. It's a shame how watered down today's version is despite the human specimens that play the game
@@rickchyczewski576 Excellent points. Never thought about that aspect of it. Also fewer studio gimmicks, more focused and understated commentary, and far fewer commercials.
I agree with you.. these were great Super Bowls..
This is not a Super Bowl this is a true Hall of Fame game . Between players , coaches and executives 27 future inductees( should be a few more ) .What a game and this presentation is a treasure for anyone who truly enjoys the game . Thank you !
Why thank you very much Eric :)
I couldn't agree with you more.
Yes Super BOWL
This is the real NFL, and one of the best Super Bowls ever.
Incredible restoration, just beautiful! Thank you so much!
24 future HOF’ers just incredible
Still ranks up there with the best of the best in Super Bowl matchups and games. And now we get to watch an enhanced version of this beautiful uniform and talent showdown! Much appreciated!
All the NFL uniforms were awesome back then.
Remember this game very well. It was a great match-up that certainly lived up to its billing. It was also a bittersweet moment in that it was Curt Gowdy's final Super Bowl telecast and final NBC telecast.
This was the first truly legendary and epic Super Bowl.
The first DAL-PIT SB was the first really fun Super Bowl with a lot of big moments: Lynn Swann's catches, Percy Howard, Lambert standing up to Cliff Harris and defending Gerela, which led to the classic "Jack Lambert is a defender of what is right" quote.
It also had a few different nuances compared to a few years later:
Dallas in SB X was a Wild Card and they had a lot of younger guys (The Dirty Dozen from their 1975 draft) and were probably not expected to face Pittsburgh at the Orange Bowl, and aesthetically the Orange Bowl looked a bit out of place with AstroTurf. (I think the other 3 NFC teams were probably seen as having a better shot making it to here since DAL didn't win their division)
This Super Bowl (XIII) had so many things attached:
First SB of the new 16-game season, 2 WC's per conference, 5 playoff teams per conference
First season after rules changes to encourage passing (which Bradshaw and Staubach clearly excelled at)
The number of future Hall of Fame names on both sides (24!)
Both teams were vying to be the first 3x SB winner
Dallas was defending SB champ, so you had 4 of the previous 7 SB winners
The first SB rematch
The Orange Bowl back to natural grass after a few years of turf
Curt Gowdy calling his final NFL game for NBC
The culmination of what I thought was one a landmark NFL season (16 games, extra playoff teams, the Wild Card game, the era of big play passing began)
All in all, a truly super Super Bowl
Switching to grass made it look so much better and 1978 is one of my top 3 seasons
Summeral's team calling it would've been better...and the Cowboys winning.
Pittsburgh beats Minnesota in the 1st super bowl rematch if Drew Pearson doesn't "nudge" that DB for Minnesota on that hail mary
@mongoslade277 if?...
Rams beat Steelers in Rams first SB and win.
Gowdy did came back to NBC in 1988
What an absolute treat this is! I’m a Steelers fan that was born in 1989, and by that time, Bradshaw, Franco, Swann, Stallworth, and the legendary Steel Curtain were all gone, and Coach Noll retired when I was just two years old. While I’m fortunate enough to have seen my beloved Steelers compete in four Super Bowls, winning two, I missed out on their glory years, when they were the best team in football for an entire decade. So I love watching these old games in their entirety. UA-cam is the closest thing we’ll ever get to a time machine
REAL football ...REAL players...REAL teams...REAL coaches...REAL announcers...a REAL game...and NOT a TV show...REAL hitting...NO STUPID DANCING...Those were the days!!!
Man you are right on! I HATE the damn dancing done today, they look like fruit cakes...look at me, I'm so great. People forget how tough Bradshaw was. Can you imagine Brady playing back then? He would of never gotten so many records or played for so long. You couldn't have said it better, those were the days!!!
Absofucknlutely,tired of today's players
Yes, those were great days.
For REAL!
well it certainly wasn't about $$$ like it is today.
Still my biggest, "Kick in the Gut" day as a sports fan. So much build up that day....I still get the same feeling every time I watch this one. Even the great opening theme music evokes a rush of emotion. I am transported back to that optimistic youth. Soon, however, my questions are never answered, helplessness kicks in, and there is nothing I can do to change the outcome. So many great men in this game. Always a Super Uniform matchup.
Friend, you take the words right out of my mouth. If only...
More like a "Kick in the Nuts"😂
To this day I say if they just kept running the ball...🤔!
@@ddave7026 Yes.....no need for gimmicks in that first drive.
@@ddave7026 my 9 year old self did not understand why they did not go for it on 4th down after jackie smith dropped the pass. My 50yo self still doesn't have the answer.
I love watching these old games. Therapeutic distraction from life. Thank you for bringing them back to life.
You hit the jackpot on this one. This was the gridiron equivalent of the Thrilla in Manila.
Thank you Dave!
Very sad to hear about Franco Harris death. It seemed very untimely going home. He was a true legend!
Thank you so much for uploading this!!! My mom actually performed in the halftime show! And now I finally get to see that moment.
It was the greatest Super Bowl to date then and still ranks as a top 5 for me. Too bad Jackie Smith is remembered by many for that play. He was a Hall of Famer who defined the big, fast tough end.
Amazing job Dave yet again! Keep ‘em coming!!!
yeah and I don't think his dropped pass would have affected the out come. They would've been down 1 score instead of 2 and with over 2 minutes left, and their TO's, I don't think they kick an onsides kick which they recovered leading to that other TD..
Also, what nobody asks is who made the boneheaded decision to put Randy White and his broken thumb on kickoff. It was his fumble that led to Pittsburgh's final touchdown and the game-winning points.
@@gregford2103Correct. Putting in a guy with a cast on his arm to field a punt is like sending in a guy with a leg in a cast to kick a field goal.
Super Thanks for keeping in the commercials! It makes the broadcast immersion even better ! 💪
When EF Hutton talks--people listen!
Yes, commercials are often very interesting in retrospect, and help better out the game in a historical context.
With 17 Hall of Fame members involved this is the greatest Super Bowl ever. Fitting that it was the last major telecast with Curt Gowdy handling play by play for NBC.
The only thing this game didn't have was the introduction of the Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders. Man, they were smoking hot!!🤩🏈
Watch the previous super bowl Dallas vs Denver in super bowl 12. The Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders were featured in that game bc the game sucked!! Dallas had like 5 turnovers & Denver had more than that. Like 7 or 8
Make bushes great again
The buildup to this SB was amazing. These two teams were battling to be the first to win 3 SBs. And the action in this game was insane. Two great teams delivered.
Not to mention all the future Hall of Famers on both sides of the field.
I remember watching this with my mom dad and younger brother, at my paternal grandparents apartment near Pittsburgh. I was 13 and little bro was 11. These four Steelers Super Bowls made me the Steelers fanatic I am still to this day... so is my dad and brothers. GO STEELERS!
Dave, this is excellent quality as I'm so appreciating these upscaled super clear uploads with the original commercials and broadcast productions like the SB intro intact as it really completes the time machine experience. Definitely thank you for getting so many of these games up in the past few weeks.
This was the second Super Bowl I ever sat down and watched. Still one of the best games ever.
Props to Brodie for saying it would be a high-scoring game.
And these games never looked this good when we watched them live, because we had old cathode ray TVs with little screens. Great to Chromecast them to a big flat screen now.
My third SB.... hard to believe there have been 43 more since!!!
WOW! The quality of this is AMAZING!!
I remember this game. It's the game where I heard my dad use a word I'd never heard before when the Cowboys tight end dropped that pass in the endzone.
Fiddlesticks?
One of the greatest games ever played when football was really football. Thanks for the upload. If Brady was around back then, he would've been killed by either defense.
I have been watching your videos for a few years, and this is my favorite Super Bowl of all time, and haven't seen quality like this since the actual broadcast I watched as a kid. Thank You very much for this upload, sir. We are die-hard Steeler fans so please keep up the great work that you do as it is always appreciated.
Who remembers Curt Gowdy hosting the American sportsman show?
Wow, this is awesome. This is fast becoming one of my favorite subscriptions on UA-cam.
I didn't really watch much of this before I restored it. Am noticing there are occasional pauses in the video. I checked and these were inherent to the original recording unfortunately.
yes I noticed it paused when DD Lewis intercepted Bradshaw in the 2nd quarter. Must have been the source tape.
I loved how Steelers radio's Jack Fleming and Myron Cope crashed the coin toss. Thank you Dave once again spoiling us students of the game.
Always loved this Super Bowl. Everything about it, the two iconic teams, the aesthetics of the game and where it was played (on grass unlike their previous Super Bowl). A battle to prove who truly was the team of the 70s. Stacked legendary lineups and coaching staffs...both teams staking their claim. Gowdy on the mic.
Startling clarity in this restoration.
I wonder what coach landry was thinking on that first drive to run that trick play when the Steelers done nothing to slow down dorsett
Wished Staubach called his own plays.
Like Bradshaw did
Brah! I remember this game like it was last week!
But the commercials, I cant seem to gather it. 😂
Schlitz. Omg I do remember my uncles and friends drinking that. That and Olympia and Primo beer. 😂
I got goose bumps hearing Enberg and Gowdy😁
Agreed my friend
The BEST Super Bowl IMO ... a clash of the titans that has never been matched.
One of the best games in football history. Two top teams at the top of their game.
24 future HOF’ers just unbelievable
Thanks Dave again! You are a restoration MACHINE!
The Mike Wagner tackle of Drew Pearson on the Cowboys last drive was as nasty as the infamous 1976 Turkey Jones pile drive of Terry Bradshaw. Unbelievable that there was no unnecessary roughness penalty.
Steelers got away with so much in those 2 SBs.
Pushing off players after the tackle, kicking them!
And no penalties!!
Welcome to the 1970s NFL. Ron Johnson would have been ejected today, for slugging Dorsett in the 1st half.
@@topJimmyP1984 Yes, see Golden Richards and the 'cheap shot" to break his ribs in SB X.
I did, Mel punched him in the back/ribs well after the play to take him out of the game!@@romelovesdan
Raiders knew how to pay them back. Landry wouldn't let his team fight back.
DV, great job and many thanks. So many things went wrong for the Cowboys that night: the reverse fumble, Jackie's drop (RiP), the Barnes' incidental contact on Swann, Hollywood's unnecessary burst through the line after the dead play whistle, the Franco touchdown that followed it when the official blocked Charlie Waters, and Randy White's fumble wearing that cast. Great game.
plus Pittsburgh's first TD should not have counted. Despite what the announcers said, if you look at the replay, he wasn't forced out of bounds upon making the catch and would have no way been able to stay in bounds. But it was a first down play and somewhat reasonable to say they might have gotten a TD anyway but I'd say a FG would be more likely.
also Pittsburgh had a big mistake witch benefitted them with a TD. on 3rd and about 5 on Dallas' 8yd Ln, Cowboys made a huge sack only to be nullified because the Steelers had a delay of game, the next play was a TD. Had they snapped the ball on time the play before, they would have had to settle for a FG.
I looked at an NFL Films angle of the play from the end zone, straight down. It looks to me like he would've come down in bounds with the ball and was forced out.
@@davevolskysbackdoor5673 well I just looked again and although he did get hit, I focused on his knee and it looked like it was not affected by the hit, however , too close to blame the officials, plus obviously there's no instant replay. I was watching it on my DVD which isn't nearly as clear as this video but I still think if you focus on the knee that hits out of bounds, it keeps the same motion throughout.
My first super bowl (on TV). Amazing to see a broadcast this old with such great quality.
Donnie Shell was one of the greatest safeties to play the game. I saw him solo tackle Walter Payton at Soldier's field in 1986--I never saw anyone else do that; man could that Steelers team hit--they absolutely took no prisoners.
What an awesome memory to relive. One of the best Super Bowls ever. I remember watching this as a 13 year old kid, but never saw the halftime show. To be able to see a normal entertaining halftime with no boob shots or crotch grabbing is refreshing. Just simple entertainment in a simpler time back then.
Wow... all the greats, when football was Football... I was 18 and the Steelers are my team. Just the introduction of the players got me all excited... I'm going to get to the game now, and once again, I am 18 years old...
Best Halftime Show Ever! I wasn’t even into sports then. Never thought I’d see this again!! Thank you Dave!!!
Curt Gowdy's last Super Bowl. What a legend!
That TD, Bradshaw to Bleyer, just before the half, reminded me somewhat of "The Catch". This SB has to rank up there as one of the best. Hard-hitting and bad blood between 2 teams loaded with talent, both on the field and on the sidelines. The makings for a classic. Thank you.
24 future HOF’ers
Amazing to watch these old games with such clarity. Thank you
Thank you for your work here, I feel blessed to be able to watch this game.
I watched it as a kid and got to relive it again today! Thanks for posting it!
thank you for putting this came on I was in boot camp in camp pendelton and didnt get to see this game. thanks again.
When I was in basic in San Diego my DIs had the 1990 SB (Jan ‘91) on in the drill instructor’s office - I was caught peeking through the office window curtain - caught a few plays before I paid w about 300 push ups…
Worth it
great story thank you for sharing
Thanks for another great restoration, from a great time in both broadcasting & pro football
Thank you for doing this. High quality memories!
Truly amazing work Dave, thank you! 🏈
Thanks for the hard work, Dave. I watched this live as a kid with my Dad. This was truly special.
The most amazing video on UA-cam. Thank you for the great job in making this video so clear.
Great memories take me back to this time in life!!!
OUR THANKS TO YOU THIS WAS AMAZING SEEING THIS FROM SEATTLE, JUST WATCH AT WORK HERE DOWNTOWN SEATTLE! HIGH FIVE BRUH
1:19, forgot about EF Hutton commercials, everybody listens. Clasdic 😆. Our power was out when this game was on, could only listen to it. Never actually saw much of highlights. Thanks!
That fumble on the opening drive had to hurt if you were a Dallas fan.
Not sure why they had to get so fancy. They were driving (at the 34 yard line) and would have scored at the very least a Field Goal and maybe would have won the game.
Incredibly, this video took me back in time to my HS years... as a Steelers fan, I never sweated so much by watching this game as a teenager. It was gut wrenching back then.. glad the Super Steelers won.. a Dynasty of the 70's.. 4 SB titles in 6 years, a feat no team has matched, and their best defensive team (1976) didn't make the SB.. it was a fantastic ride to be a Steelers fan during those years. Eternally thankful for uploading this HIGH QUALITY video to revive great memories.. thanks 👍
I've been a Steelers fan since 1972 when I was 9. The 1976 team is frequently referred to as the best, with the best defense because of the shutouts.
The 1976 team started 1-4. They blew a 28-14 fourth quarter lead in Oakland to start the season. They were beat up by the Vikings on a Monday night. The Patriots came into Pittsburgh and won. Finally the Browns beat the Steelers in Cleveland in the infamous Turkey Jones head first slam of Bradshaw.
Aside from the Bengals, the Steelers beat teams with losing records and needed Oakland's help in beating Cincinnati to win the AFC Central.
My point is that the Steelers were not the best team in 1976. The Patriots were. The Patriots beat Oakland 48-17 in the regular season and were screwed by the officials in their playoff game in Oakland. Ray Hamilton was called for roughing the passer on a 4th and 17 incomplete pass. The game would have been over.
New England got revenge 25 years later in the Tuck Bowl.
The best Steelers teams were, in no particular order, 1978, 1975, 2004 and 2005.
Thank you so much. 12:49 12:50
@@penguinsfan251 I don't know, the '75 team had 2 teams in their division that were 11-3 and 10-4 (Cincinnati and Houston I believe) and the Steelers swept them both with their 12-2 season, lost their final game to the 12-2 Rams 10-3 and that's with playing several backup players do to the fact they'd already clinched home field throughout the playoffs. That's pretty impressive to me and they beat my Cowboys in the SB.
@@penguinsfan251 1976 New England Patriots rolled up 296 yards rushing on the Raiders when they beat them 48-17 that season in Foxboro. 296 yards. Ridiculous.
Dave you have done it again!! All I can say is omg! Seeing this game in 1080 is unreal. Love it love it.
The work you do is amazing.
I was 12 back when this was played and football was everything. You loved your team and hated pretty much everybody else.
Incredible time , I’m glad I experienced it as a kid.
Dave.. Once again, words can't describe how awesome this is.. you are.. and all the time you put into these classic game!. We are forever indebted👍
First Super Bowl I ever watched. The best from all the copies i've seen. Thank you very much for your work.
At the time of this game I was on a sub. I knew Franco from Penn State. And we had a gent from Pittsburg. Our XO had been Starbuck's roommate at the academy. The entire week before the game all you heard was how the Cowboys if they won would be the first to win 3. But never a word about the Steelers. When the Steelers went to 35 the XO changed course so we lost radio. Closer to the end the Captain Changed corse back so we heard the end. Since the XO had been bragging on Starback we never let him live it down.
Staubbach
As a life long Cowboys fan this still hurts as much as it did when I watched it live as an 8 year old boy. Roger Staubach was my idol then and I had just gotten a Dallas Cowboys junior helmet Xmas day from the Sears and Roebuck catalog as I had requested. As much as I still admire the man I can objectively say his first half was rather poor with the exception of the Tony Hill TD pass play with an allout blitz by the Steelers. I think he was still thinking about super bowl X and the 7 sacks he endured by the vaunted Steel Curtain defense and was a tad antsy in the pocket. Despite that Dallas still had chances to win but too many ill timed mistakes and bad luck occurred. As a 53 year old man I can respect and admire both teams and the men who played this game. I wonder why Dallas insisted on running the ball with Newhouse on first downs. Shorter quicker passes would have kept moving the chains along with a heavy dose of Dorsett who was giving Pittsburgh fits to contain. Had Dallas won this game they would have been the team of the decade and had gotten more players into both the Cowboys ring of honor and Pro football hall of fame. Charlie Waters deserves to be in the Cowboys ring of honor and has been a great spokesman and ambassador to the Dallas Cowboys appearing in many NFL Network production films. Would be so special to see Dallas win another Super Bowl in my lifetime. So far Ive personally watched 4...one for the thumb now in 2024 to steal the old Steelers mantra.
Sounds like a lot of kids i knew....my big bro was a cowboys fan....me too but i chose the Cardinals to be different...
Couldn't have said it better. A remarkable leader on and off the field, arguably his best years behind him due his Navy service, but yes, objectively, two interceptions in the first half at this level will haunt you. By his own admission, he couldn't believe Smith was so wide open in the end zone he actually pulled the string a little, forcing Smith to drop lower than he may have wanted. That could have been 24-21Cowboys. Given that poor first half, a remarkable lead that might have inspired them to victory. Still, Smith should have caught that. Cowboys actually ran and rushed the ball better than I remembered against that vaunted Steel Curtain defence.
WOW! Great quality.. thanks for sharing!
Going back and rewatching these games, I realize that Bradshaw not only had an accurate arm but that he knew when to put it high where only Swanny and Johnny could get to it. Who knew that Rocky Bleier could also get up there?
He threw a couple INTs.
He had a bad first half including 2 fumbles.
He came thru later with his big time recievers.

This is the first football game i ever watched in its entirety. We were Giant fans, but always pulled for the NFC.
So fun to watch this after watching thousands of hours of football. Dallas had their chances but were outgunned. Overmatched at WR and turned it over way to much. Jackie Smith...
Thank you for posting!! I was telling my youngest about this game today. Cowboys fanatic, now I can handle watching it bc it is great football.
This was the game the anointed me a die hard Steelers fan for life at age 9. 45 years later and we still got one up on ya’ll Cowboys🖤💛😂!
this was the first time I rooted for the Steelers. I was 6. I lived in a tiny Midwestern town in Iowa, so most people were either Steelers or cowboys fans. the Bears🐻 and packers weren't really great at that time. before this game i was a cowboy fan .my mom and some of my uncles were too. a family friend razzed me until I started cheering for the Steelers. my allegiance changed that day. 45 years later im watching this awesome game on UA-cam. thanks for uploading a great memory
Amazing quality. Thanks for producing.
Thank you for this! I’m 50 and a huge football fan and I can’t imagine going through life having not seen this.
I am blown away with how good this looks. Compared to how it looked when we watched it live on tv back then. 👍🏻
I was there, sitting in the east end zone (right side). I was surrounded by both Dallas and Pittsburgh fans. Everyone got along, even the Dallas fans congratulated the Pittsburgh fans at the end. Fun times!
Thanks for this video, enjoying the hell out of the commercials also....seems like yesterday

2:28:10 God bless Jackie Smith. He came in for Billy Joe Dupree to start the 2nd half. This was the beginning of bad luck for the Cowboys in the 3rd Qtr.
So glad I found this channel!
Its crazy how I never thought Rogers helmet was ugly back in '79 but it sure is!
Amazing JOB as always! Thanks Dave Merry Christmas!
Great halftime show!
Dave I can't thank you enough for your work on these games. From a grateful Steeler fan since '74.
I've made some good decisions in life, and some bad ones, like anyone. Picking the Steelers as my team in fourth grade, in Arizona, a state without a team, almost out of the blue, paid off over the decades like few other things in my life. In the 70's, Led Zeppelin and the Steelers both made me dizzy. I know a lot of guys who love their NFL teams because their dad loved them, then spent decades loving a team that lost A LOT. But you just can't help it. It's in your blood. Part of your childhood maybe with your dad, friends, classmates or brothers.
But nothing's perfect. I'm a Pirates fan too.
I've met Bleier and Bradshaw. The names Jack Lambert and Lynn Swann still give me the chills. So do Hines Ward and Ed Reed. And Kenny Stabler. Love for my team but also much respect for those we battled, for we battled many worthy warriors.
Some day I'd like to actually visit Pittsburgh. LOL.
Football was so fun to watch in those days.
Damn good job on this. Worthy of the best Super Bowl ever played
I guess we have someone at KING TV Seattle for preserving the video recording of Superbowl XIII. Pretty much a Hall of Fame game between the Cowboys and The Steelers. Maybe not the highest rated Superbowl ever, but I always thought it was the funnest!
The commercials the best part. Makes you feel like you’re watching it live
