  • My thanks to romelovesdan for providing me the DVD files used for this project. I've enhanced the broadcast recording of Super Bowl XIII. This copy of the game was in VERY bad shape - lots of noise & compression, very dark picture, and incorrect color that was REALLY washed-out. There was enough there to work with however to accomplish a huge upgrade. I ran the game through Topaz to upscale, denoise, sharpen and double the framerate, then used Da Vinci Resolve to majorly brighten the picture and completely overhaul the color. The end result is far from perfect (very soft focus and not very sharp), but it easily bests any copy of the game you'll find on UA-cam and from the NFL proper. You can see the incredible restoration here - original shots and post-enhancement -- imgbox.com/g/32lbABIWoV

I think the NFL does not want us to see how good football used to be. Football in the 70 s and 80 s was the best of the sport. They could hit. QBs called their own games. Notice the penalties. Is it that there are more today? No. They let them play back then. It's a shame how watered down today's version is despite the human specimens that play the game

  • @chrisuncleahmad

This was the first truly legendary and epic Super Bowl.
The first DAL-PIT SB was the first really fun Super Bowl with a lot of big moments: Lynn Swann's catches, Percy Howard, Lambert standing up to Cliff Harris and defending Gerela, which led to the classic "Jack Lambert is a defender of what is right" quote.
It also had a few different nuances compared to a few years later:
Dallas in SB X was a Wild Card and they had a lot of younger guys (The Dirty Dozen from their 1975 draft) and were probably not expected to face Pittsburgh at the Orange Bowl, and aesthetically the Orange Bowl looked a bit out of place with AstroTurf. (I think the other 3 NFC teams were probably seen as having a better shot making it to here since DAL didn't win their division)
This Super Bowl (XIII) had so many things attached:
First SB of the new 16-game season, 2 WC's per conference, 5 playoff teams per conference
First season after rules changes to encourage passing (which Bradshaw and Staubach clearly excelled at)
The number of future Hall of Fame names on both sides (24!)
Both teams were vying to be the first 3x SB winner
Dallas was defending SB champ, so you had 4 of the previous 7 SB winners
    The first SB rematch
The Orange Bowl back to natural grass after a few years of turf
Curt Gowdy calling his final NFL game for NBC
The culmination of what I thought was one a landmark NFL season (16 games, extra playoff teams, the Wild Card game, the era of big play passing began)
All in all, a truly super Super Bowl

What an absolute treat this is! I’m a Steelers fan that was born in 1989, and by that time, Bradshaw, Franco, Swann, Stallworth, and the legendary Steel Curtain were all gone, and Coach Noll retired when I was just two years old. While I’m fortunate enough to have seen my beloved Steelers compete in four Super Bowls, winning two, I missed out on their glory years, when they were the best team in football for an entire decade. So I love watching these old games in their entirety. UA-cam is the closest thing we’ll ever get to a time machine

plus Pittsburgh's first TD should not have counted. Despite what the announcers said, if you look at the replay, he wasn't forced out of bounds upon making the catch and would have no way been able to stay in bounds. But it was a first down play and somewhat reasonable to say they might have gotten a TD anyway but I'd say a FG would be more likely.

    • @kurtmorris454
      @kurtmorris454 5 місяців тому

also Pittsburgh had a big mistake witch benefitted them with a TD. on 3rd and about 5 on Dallas' 8yd Ln, Cowboys made a huge sack only to be nullified because the Steelers had a delay of game, the next play was a TD. Had they snapped the ball on time the play before, they would have had to settle for a FG.

Not sure why they had to get so fancy. They were driving (at the 34 yard line) and would have scored at the very least a Field Goal and maybe would have won the game.

Incredibly, this video took me back in time to my HS years... as a Steelers fan, I never sweated so much by watching this game as a teenager. It was gut wrenching back then.. glad the Super Steelers won.. a Dynasty of the 70's.. 4 SB titles in 6 years, a feat no team has matched, and their best defensive team (1976) didn't make the SB.. it was a fantastic ride to be a Steelers fan during those years. Eternally thankful for uploading this HIGH QUALITY video to revive great memories.. thanks 👍

I've been a Steelers fan since 1972 when I was 9. The 1976 team is frequently referred to as the best, with the best defense because of the shutouts.
The 1976 team started 1-4. They blew a 28-14 fourth quarter lead in Oakland to start the season. They were beat up by the Vikings on a Monday night. The Patriots came into Pittsburgh and won. Finally the Browns beat the Steelers in Cleveland in the infamous Turkey Jones head first slam of Bradshaw.
Aside from the Bengals, the Steelers beat teams with losing records and needed Oakland's help in beating Cincinnati to win the AFC Central.
My point is that the Steelers were not the best team in 1976. The Patriots were. The Patriots beat Oakland 48-17 in the regular season and were screwed by the officials in their playoff game in Oakland. Ray Hamilton was called for roughing the passer on a 4th and 17 incomplete pass. The game would have been over.
New England got revenge 25 years later in the Tuck Bowl.
The best Steelers teams were, in no particular order, 1978, 1975, 2004 and 2005.

@@penguinsfan251 I don't know, the '75 team had 2 teams in their division that were 11-3 and 10-4 (Cincinnati and Houston I believe) and the Steelers swept them both with their 12-2 season, lost their final game to the 12-2 Rams 10-3 and that's with playing several backup players do to the fact they'd already clinched home field throughout the playoffs. That's pretty impressive to me and they beat my Cowboys in the SB.

At the time of this game I was on a sub. I knew Franco from Penn State. And we had a gent from Pittsburg. Our XO had been Starbuck's roommate at the academy. The entire week before the game all you heard was how the Cowboys if they won would be the first to win 3. But never a word about the Steelers. When the Steelers went to 35 the XO changed course so we lost radio. Closer to the end the Captain Changed corse back so we heard the end. Since the XO had been bragging on Starback we never let him live it down.

As a life long Cowboys fan this still hurts as much as it did when I watched it live as an 8 year old boy. Roger Staubach was my idol then and I had just gotten a Dallas Cowboys junior helmet Xmas day from the Sears and Roebuck catalog as I had requested. As much as I still admire the man I can objectively say his first half was rather poor with the exception of the Tony Hill TD pass play with an allout blitz by the Steelers. I think he was still thinking about super bowl X and the 7 sacks he endured by the vaunted Steel Curtain defense and was a tad antsy in the pocket. Despite that Dallas still had chances to win but too many ill timed mistakes and bad luck occurred. As a 53 year old man I can respect and admire both teams and the men who played this game. I wonder why Dallas insisted on running the ball with Newhouse on first downs. Shorter quicker passes would have kept moving the chains along with a heavy dose of Dorsett who was giving Pittsburgh fits to contain. Had Dallas won this game they would have been the team of the decade and had gotten more players into both the Cowboys ring of honor and Pro football hall of fame. Charlie Waters deserves to be in the Cowboys ring of honor and has been a great spokesman and ambassador to the Dallas Cowboys appearing in many NFL Network production films. Would be so special to see Dallas win another Super Bowl in my lifetime. So far Ive personally watched 4...one for the thumb now in 2024 to steal the old Steelers mantra.

Couldn't have said it better. A remarkable leader on and off the field, arguably his best years behind him due his Navy service, but yes, objectively, two interceptions in the first half at this level will haunt you. By his own admission, he couldn't believe Smith was so wide open in the end zone he actually pulled the string a little, forcing Smith to drop lower than he may have wanted. That could have been 24-21Cowboys. Given that poor first half, a remarkable lead that might have inspired them to victory. Still, Smith should have caught that. Cowboys actually ran and rushed the ball better than I remembered against that vaunted Steel Curtain defence.

Dave I can't thank you enough for your work on these games. From a grateful Steeler fan since '74.
I've made some good decisions in life, and some bad ones, like anyone. Picking the Steelers as my team in fourth grade, in Arizona, a state without a team, almost out of the blue, paid off over the decades like few other things in my life. In the 70's, Led Zeppelin and the Steelers both made me dizzy. I know a lot of guys who love their NFL teams because their dad loved them, then spent decades loving a team that lost A LOT. But you just can't help it. It's in your blood. Part of your childhood maybe with your dad, friends, classmates or brothers.
But nothing's perfect. I'm a Pirates fan too.
I've met Bleier and Bradshaw. The names Jack Lambert and Lynn Swann still give me the chills. So do Hines Ward and Ed Reed. And Kenny Stabler. Love for my team but also much respect for those we battled, for we battled many worthy warriors.
Some day I'd like to actually visit Pittsburgh. LOL.
